The chromosphere in internetwork regions of the quiet Sun was regarded as a static and homogeneous layer for a long time. Thanks to advances in observations and numerical modelling, the wave nature of these atmospheric regions received increasing attention during the last decade. Recent three-dimensional radiation magnetohydrodynamic simulations with CO5BOLD feature the chromosphere of internetwork regions as a dynamic and intermittent phenomenon. It is a direct product of interacting waves that form a mesh-like pattern of hot shock fronts and cool post-shock regions. The waves are excited self-consistently at the top of the convection zone. In the middle chromosphere above an average height of 1000 km, plasma beta gets larger than one and magnetic fields become more important. The model chromosphere exhibits a magnetic field that is much more homogeneous than in the layers below and evolves much faster. That includes fast propagating (MHD) waves. Further improvements of the simulations like time-dependent hydrogen ionisation are currently in progress. This class of models is capable of explaining apparently contradicting diagnostics such as carbon monoxide and UV emission at the same time.

We review our recent work on the formation and evolution of disks within triaxial dark matter (DM) halos by means of numerical simulations, including star formation and feedback from stellar evolution. The growing disks are strongly influenced by shapes of DM halos and modify them in turn. Disk parameters are in a broad agreement with those in the local universe. Gas-rich stellar bars grow in tandem with the disk and facilitate the angular momentum redistribution in the system and radial gas inflow. Nested bars appear to form as a by-product. Interactions between various non-axisymmetric components—bars, disks and halos lead to decay of bars or washing out of ellipticity in the inner halo.

I review the progress in research on intracluster planetary nebulae over the last five years. Hundreds more intracluster planetary nebulae have been detected in the nearby Virgo and Fornax galaxy clusters, searches of several galaxy groups have been made, and intracluster planetary candidates have been detected in the distant Coma cluster. The first theoretical studies of intracluster planetaries have also been completed, studying their utility as tracers of the intracluster light as a whole, and also as individual objects.

From the results to date, it appears that intracluster planetaries are common in galaxy clusters (10-20% of the total amount of starlight), but thus far, none have been detected in galaxy groups, a result which currently is not well understood. Limited spectroscopic follow-up of intracluster planetaries in Virgo indicate that they have a complex velocity structure, in agreement with numerical models of intracluster light. Hydrodynamic simulations of individual intracluster planetaries predict that their morphology is significantly altered by their intracluster environment, but their emission-line properties appear to be unaffected.

Based on photospheric vector magnetograms obtained at Huairou Observing Station and BBSO, we studied the evolution of magnetic nonpotentiality and energy transport in NOAA AR 10720. Daily changes of vector magnetic field was analyzed. Shear angle, helicity and free energy density which were deduced from the data were examined.

A New EFR on January 13 brought in magnetic nonpotentiality strong shear angle, free energy and complexity(multiple neutral line and opposite sign helicity) which touched off AR activity, support the idea that upper atmospheres critical state may be made by continues changes on the photosphere.

Multiwavelengths studies of massive star formation regions in the LMC and SMC reveal that a second generation of stars is being formed in dense molecular clouds located in the surroundings of the massive clusters. These dense molecular clouds have survived the action of massive star UV radiation fields and winds and they appear as compact dense H2 knots in regions of weak CO emission. Alternatively, we have found that large molecular clouds, probably remnants of the parental giant molecular clouds where the first generation of stars were formed, are suffering the interaction of the winds and UV radiation field in their surfaces in the direction of the central massive cluster or massive stars. These molecular regions show 1.2 mm continuum emission form cold dust and they show embedded IR sources as determined from deep ground base JHKs imaging. The distribution of young IR sources as determined from their Mid IR colors obtained by SPITZER concentrate in the maxima of CO and dust emission. IR spectroscopy of the embedded sources with high IR excess confirm their nature as massive young stellar objects (MYSO's). Our results are suggestive of contagious star formation where triggering and induced star formation could be taking place.

The first multiple-aperture interferometric study of a binary system, in which the power of combining interferometric and spectroscopic data was demonstrated, was made from the Southern Hemisphere. The observations of α Vir with the Narrabri Stellar Intensity Interferometer (NSII) were combined with spectroscopic and photometric data to yield the mass, radius and luminosity of the primary as well as an accurate distance to the system. The NSII also revealed a number of stars, previously thought to be single, to be binary systems. Several of these systems have subsequently been shown to be spectroscopic binaries.

The Sydney University Stellar Interferometer (SUSI) and the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) are the two current Southern Hemisphere multiple aperture interferometers. SUSI is being used to determine interferometric orbits for some of the binary systems discovered with the NSII including β Cen and λ Sco and, in combination with spectroscopy, to determine accurate masses for early-type stars and accurate dynamical parallaxes for the systems.

The VLTI has operated with three beam-combining instruments, namely VINCI, MIDI and AMBER. The few observations of binary systems that have been made so far are summarised and, while in general they are of a preliminary nature, they demonstrate the potential of the VLTI for binary star studies.

One double-lined spectroscopic binary that has been observed with all three Southern Hemisphere instruments is γ2 Vel, which has the brightest Wolf-Rayet star in the sky as its secondary. The observations and preliminary results for the masses of the O-type primary and WC8 secondary and for the distance to the system are summarised.

The dynamical evolution of 2⋅105 hypothetical Oort cloud comets by the action of planetary, galactic and stellar perturbations during 2⋅109 years is studied numerically. The evolution of comet orbits from the outer (104 AU <a<5⋅104 AU, a is semimajor axes) and the inner Oort cloud (5⋅103 AU <a<104 AU) to near-Earth space is investigated separately. The distribution of the perihelion (q) passage frequency in the planetary region is obtained calculating the numbers of comets in every interval of Δ q per year. The flux of long-period (LP) comets (orbital periods P>200 yr) with perihelion distances q<1.5 AU brighter than visual absolute magnitude H10=7 is ∼ 1.5 comets per year, and ∼18 comets with H10<10.9. The ratio of all LP comets with q<1.5 AU to ‘new’ comets is ∼5. The frequency of passages of LP comets from the inner Oort cloud through region q<1.5 AU is ∼3.5⋅10−13 yr−1, that is roughly one order of magnitude less than frequency of passages of LP comets from the outer cloud (∼5.28⋅10−12 yr−1). We show that the flux of ‘new’ comets with 15<q<31 AU is higher than with q<15 AU, by a factor ∼1.7 for comets from the outer Oort cloud and, by a factor ∼7 for comets from the inner cloud. The perihelia of comets from the outer cloud previously passed through the planetary region are predominated in the Saturn-Uranus region. The majority of inner cloud comets come in the outer solar system (q>15 AU), and a small fraction (∼0.01) of them can reach orbits with q<1.5 AU. The frequency of transfer of comets from the inner cloud (a<104 AU) to the outer Oort cloud (a>104 AU), from where they are injected to the region q<1.5 AU, is ∼6⋅10−14 yr−1.

In the School of Science of the Universidad de Los Andes (ULA), in Mérida, Venezuela, a very successful event focused on elementary and high school students, was founded in 2000. The name of this event is “Encounter with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology” (hereinafter “Encounters with Science”), and it integrates these disciplines, as well as Astronomy. Its main purpose is that young minds can become familiar with the methods of science inquiry and reasoning, and can understand the concepts and processes of the sciences through thoroughly prepared experiences.

“Encounters with Science” has grown each year in an exponential way. As a matter of fact, in its sixth edition (2005), the number of elementary and high school students coming from all over the country, has reached the outstanding number of approximately nine thousand. Among all the experiences that the students could be engaged in, were many involving Astronomy. These experiences were prepared by professors, together with graduate and undergraduate students, who are pursuing their degrees in all branches of science, including Astronomy. Although there is this incredible team of faculties and graduate and undergraduate students working together; the target is the students of the high and elementary schools. We certainly focus on the engaging and encouraging of students to experience scientific work at first hand.

This flourishing program is continuing to grow and to become strong. It has matured in the sense that now our professors have prepared an excellent didactic material that can, together with the hour/class teaching, prepare high school and elementary school students for a better understanding of science; particularly, helping in this way for a better education in Astronomy.

The main event of the Encounters lasts five days in the School of Science of ULA, but subsidiary events are spread all over the year and around the country through trips that our faculty members undertake with our students. Thereby, they reach places where students perhaps cannot attend the main event during its celebration. As a successful program, it can be interesting to see if other countries can adopt this method to recruit or to trigger the interest of students to pursue their studies in the Sciences.

In this talk, I describe methods for direct distance estimation to Planetary Nebulae (PNe). I review the foremost of these methods, the Expansion Parallax Distance, and present some recent results from this technique. In addition, I will discuss the major contributions to the systematic and random distance errors resulting from the method (including ionization front motions and deviations from spherical target morphologies), and show preliminary evidence quantifying these effects.

The SIM (Planet Quest) mission is a space-based long-baseline stellar interferometer designed for ultra-precise astrometry. This paper describes how SIM can be used for double star research. There are several regimes of operation. For binary stars separated by more than 1″.5, SIM treats these as distinct objects. Double stars less than ∼10 milliarcsec in separation are seen as a single object and SIM measures the photocenter of the composite object. Between 10 mas and 1″.15, SIM is able to see the double star as two distinct objects, but because photons from both stars are detected there is the possibility of increased noise and measurement bias. This paper describes how double stars are observed with SIM and what information can be derived.

In this proceeding we present the procedure that we have adopted to obtain a dataset of Padova94 tracks (Bressan et al. (1993), Fagotto et al. (1994), Fagotto et al. (1994)) interpolated in metallicity. The procedure requires special care to avoid spurious features in the resulting grid, thus we have subdivided tracks in evolutionary phases, we have chosen the suitable interpolation method and the transition masses. Finally, we have compared our interpolated dataset with a similar models, Girardi et al. (2000), obtaining a general good agreement.

The Triangulum Spiral Galaxy Messier 33 offers unique insights into the building of a galactic disk. We identify spectacular arcs of intermediate age (0.6 Gyr − 2 Gyr) stars in the low-metallicity outer disk. The northern arc spans ~120 degrees in azimuth and up to 5 arcmin in width. The arcs are located 2-3 disk scale lengths from the galaxy centre (where 1 disk scale length is equivalent to 0.1 degrees in the V-band) and lie precisely where there is a warp in the HI profile of M33. Warps and infall are inextricably linked (Binney, 1992). We present spectroscopy of candidate stars in the outer northern arc, secured using the Keck I telescope in Hawaii. The target stars have estimated visual magnitudes as faint as V~ 25m. Absorption bands of CN are seen in all spectra reported in this review talk, confirming their carbon star status. Also presented are PAH emissivity radial profiles generated from IRAC observations of M33 using the Spitzer Space Telescope. A dramatic change of phase in the m = 2 Fourier component is detected at the domain of the arcs. M33 serves as an excellent example how the disks of spiral galaxies in our Universe are built: as dynamically open systems, growing from the inward, outward.

Older ideas on acceleration are linked to current ideas to identify both the major successes in the field, and long-standing problems and difficulties that remain unresolved.

Understanding interstellar dust evolution is a major challenge underlying the interpretation of Spitzer observations of interstellar clouds, star forming regions and galaxies. I illustrate on-going work along two directions. I outline the potential impact of interstellar turbulence on the abundance of small dust particles in the diffuse interstellar medium and translucent sections of molecular clouds. I present results from an analysis of ISO and Spitzer observations of the central part of 30 Doradus, looking for dust evolution related to the radiative and dynamical impact of the R136 super star cluster on its parent molecular cloud.

Low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) offer us an unique opportunity to study the formation processes of compact objects. Secondary stars orbiting around either a black hole or a neutron star could have captured a significant amount of the ejected matter in the supernova explosions that most likely originated the compact objects. The detailed chemical analysis of these companions can provide valuable information on the parameters involved in the supernova explosion such us the mass cut, the amount of fall-back matter, possible mixing processes, and the energy and the symmetry of the explosion. In addition, this analysis can help us to find out the birth place of the binary system. We have measured element abundances of secondary stars in the LMXBs A0620–00, Cen X-4, XTE J1118+480 and Nova Sco 94. We find solar or above solar metalicity for all these systems, what appears to be independent on their locations with respect to the Galactic plane. A comparison of the observed abundances with yields from different supernova explosion together with the kinematic properties of these systems suggest a supernova origin for the compact objects in all of them except for A0620–00, for which a direct collapse cannot be discarded.

Kinematic solar dynamo models (KSDM) that use a solar like differential rotation profile usually fail to reproduce the latitudinal distribution of the toroidal magnetic fields. Usually, it is assumed that it is the larger radial shear present in the solar tachocline at higher latitudes that is the responsible for such results. We here consider variations in the shape and thickness of the tachocline and find that a better distribution of the toroidal fields is obtained when the thickness of the tachocline is $d_1=0.02R_{\odot}$, a smaller value than that conventionally used.

Classical theories of turbulence do not describe accurately inertial range scaling laws in turbulent convection and notably fail to model the shape of the turbulent spectrum of solar photospheric convection. To understand these discrepancies, a detailed study of scale-by-scale budgets in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection is presented, with particular emphasis placed on anisotropy and inhomogeneity. A generalized Kolmogorov equation applying to convection is derived and its various terms are computed using numerical simulations of turbulent Boussinesq convection. The analysis of the isotropic part of the equation shows that the third-order velocity structure function is significantly affected by buoyancy forcing and large-scale inhomogeneities. Anisotropic contributions to this equation are also shown to be comparable to their isotropic counterpart at moderate to large scales. Implications of these results for convection in the solar photosphere, mesogranulation and supergranulation are discussed.

We present a progress report on a program to improve the orbits of known spectroscopic binaries that are potential targets for ground-based optical interferometers, such as the CHARA array and PTI. The combination of such observations results in three-dimensional orbits that produce very accurate masses (uncertainties of less than 0.5%) as well as orbital parallaxes that are generally more precise than those from Hipparcos. After additional analyses determine other basic parameters of the stars, the components can be compared with theoretical evolutionary tracks. We are currently using three observatories to obtain high-resolution, red-wavelength spectra of 44 systems. Results from four years of observation are highlighted. Interferometric observations of some systems are in progress.

We discuss bulges in the Hubble sequence, based on the analysis of deep near-IR images for a sample of 216 nearby galaxies. Using a 2D multicomponent decomposition code, we find that the average bulge-to-total (B/T) flux ratio is less than 0.25 across all morphological types. Even 50% of the early-type galaxies (S0-S0/a) are found to have nuclear bars, inner disks or nuclear rings inside the bulge. Also, the shape parameter of the bulge is on average ≤2 for all Hubble types. Our results are consistent with the picture in which bulges even in many early-type galaxies were formed by secular evolutionary processes. We find two galaxies that might be stripped spirals, belonging to the so far empty S0c morphological class introduced by van den Bergh (1979).

Supermassive black holes are nowadays believed to reside in most local galaxies. Observations have revealed us vast information on the population of local and distant black holes, but the detailed physical properties of these dark massive objects are still to be proven. Accretion of gas and black hole mergers play a fundamental role in determining the two parameters defining a black hole: mass and spin. We briefly review here the basic properties of the population of supermassive black holes, focusing on the still mysterious formation of the first massive black holes, and their evolution from early times to now.
