Most stars form in crowded stellar environments. Such star forming regions typically dissolve within ten million years, while others remain bound as stellar groupings for hundreds of millions to billions of years, and then become the open clusters or globular clusters that are present in our Milky Way galaxy today. A large fraction of stars in the Galaxy hosts planetary companions. To understand the origin and dynamical evolution of such exoplanet systems, it is necessary to carefully study the effect of their environments. Here, we combine theoretical estimates with state-of-the-art numerical simulations of evolving planetary systems similar to our own solar system in different star cluster environments. We combine the planetary system evolution code, and the star cluster evolution code, integrated in the multi-physics environment. With our study we can constrain the effect of external perturbations of different environments on the planets and debris structures of a wide variety of planetary systems, which may play a key role for the habitability of exoplanets in the Universe.

We discuss a meta-analysis of the association of abundance variations in globular cluster stars with the present-day stellar mass and metallicity of globular clusters. Using data for 42 globular clusters that are well-sampled from either or both of prior literature studies and the APOGEE survey, we confirm prior findings that increasing aluminum abundance variations in globular clusters are positively correlated with increasing present-day stellar mass or decreasing metallicity. We also demonstrate that the ratio of aluminum abundance variations to either nitrogen abundance variations or sodium abundance variations is itself positively correlated with decreasing metallicity and increasing stellar mass of globular clusters. This suggests that there were at least two non-supernovae chemical polluters that were active in the early universe.

One of the largest surprises from the LIGO results regarding the first gravitational wave detection (GW 150914) was the fact the black holes (BHs) were “heavy”, of order 30 - 40 Mȯ. The most promising explanation for this obesity is that the BH-BH merger occurred at low metallicity (Z): when the iron (Fe) contents is lower this is expected to result in weaker mass loss during the Wolf-Rayet (WR) phase. We therefore critically evaluate the claims for the reasons of heavy BHs as a function of Z in the literature. Furthermore, weaker stellar winds might lead to more rapid stellar rotation, allowing WR and BH progenitor evolution in a chemically homogeneous manner. However, there is as yet no empirical evidence for more rapid rotation amongst WR stars in the low Z environment of the Magellanic Clouds. Due to the intrinsic challenge of determining WR rotation rates from emission lines, the most promising avenue to constrain rotation-rate distributions amongst various WR subgroups is through the utilisation of their emission lines in polarised light. We thus provide an overview of linear spectro-polarimetry observations of both single and binary WRs in the Galaxy, as well as the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, at 50% and 20% of solar Z, respectively. Initial results suggest that the route of chemically homogeneous evolution (CHE) through stellar rotation is challenging, whilst the alternative of a post-LBV or common envelope evolution is more likely.

This research was prompted by the discovery of 35 new or candidate symbiotic stars during a targeted search in the Local Group of Galaxies. A catalogue of a further 200 or so such objects has now been compiled. Many of them could be identified with counterparts in the POINT-AGAPE Catalogue. However, information in the Catalogue is limited to position, brightness and possible period, and light-curves are not available. The poster presented an example of a light-curve of a symbiotic star retrieved from original Point-Agape Catalogue data.

We have searched optical u′g′r′i′z′ imaging of 22 deg2 centred on the nearby giant elliptical galaxy NGC 5128 for new dwarf galaxies in the Centaurus A group. We report 45 promising new candidates, which are broadly consistent with the properties of nearby dwarf spheroidal galaxies and extend the size-luminosity relation toward fainter total luminosities and smaller sizes for known dwarf galaxies outside the Local Group (LG). Altogether, these new results show NGC 5128 to be the host of a large reservoir of low-mass dwarf galaxies that is at least as rich as that of the LG and is ripe for detailed follow-up observations.

Dwarf irregular galaxies are places of ongoing star-formation in the low-redshift Universe. Low metallicity dwarfs were originally thought to be the youngest galaxies in the local Universe, however, there is now evidence that they consist of matter which has previously undergone evolution and is enriched by star-formation. Here we present a sample of seven nearby metal-poor dwarf galaxies with a young stellar populations selected from the SDSS which we study using integral field unit (IFU) data from the VIMOS instrument, covering the spectral range between the He II 4686 line and the [SII] 6718/6733 Å doublet. We present property maps across the galaxies and compare different galaxies and different HII regions within the same galaxy. We find that the properties within one galaxy are not uniform and they also differ between different galaxies concerning star-formation, kinematics and metallicity and morphology. The observed differences across individual galaxies together with disturbed kinematics and morphologies can be interpreted as possible signs of recent interactions and/or mergers. Additionally, we present a comparison of different metallicity calibrations and search for systematic differences obtained using different methods.

The discovery via gravitational waves of binary black hole systems with total masses greater than 60Mʘ has raised interesting questions for stellar evolution theory. Among the most promising formation channels for these systems is one involving a common envelope binary containing a low metallicity, core helium burning star with mass ⁓30 – 40Mʘ and a black hole with mass ⁓30 – 40Mʘ. For this channel to be viable, the common envelope binary must eject more than half the giant star’s mass and reduce its orbital separation by as much as a factor of 80. We discuss issues faced in numerically simulating the common envelope evolution of such systems and present a 3D AMR simulation of the dynamical inspiral of a low-metallicity red supergiant with a massive black hole companion.

Astronomy has an enviable wealth of historical observations. Some verge on the archaeological, and display rare events such as novæ and supernovæ; others range up to 100 or more years in age, and bear unique information about events that will never repeat in detail. Yet most astronomers today know little of those resources and the scientific potential which they harbour, so rather infrequent use is made today of those historical data. The problem is that historical data were perforce obtained in analogue formats, and because of those formats the data too tend to be regarded as hailing from a culture whose scientific significance is passé. But the medium is not the message! Astronomy’s archives of photographic observations constitute an irreplaceable resource. The change in technology from analogue to electronic recording in the late 20th Century was abrupt, and it left most of today’s astronomers unable to handle and use photographic data, and led to a general skepticism of the value of photographic observations for present-day studies of variability in the cosmos. But that is precisely what older data can do; in particular, the older the data the more reliable the base-line against which one can measure new trends, refine orbital parameters, discern period modulations, etc.

We present a new approach to understanding star-to-star helium abundance variations within globular clusters. We begin with detailed radiation hydrodynamics simulations of cluster formation within giant molecular clouds, and investigate the conditions under which multiple populations could be created. Chemical enrichment occurs dynamically as the cluster is assembled. We test two extreme mechanisms for injection of enriched gas within the clusters, and find that realistic multiple populations can be formed in both mechanisms. The stochastic cluster formation histories are dictated by the inherent randomness of the timing and location of the formation of small clusters, which rapidly merge to build up the larger cluster, in combination with continual accretion of gas from the cloud. These cluster formation histories naturally produce a diversity of abundance patterns across the massive cluster population. We conclude that multiple populations are a natural outcome of the typical mode of star cluster formation.

We investigate dynamics of slender magnetic flux tubes (MFT) in the accretion disks of young stars. Simulations show that MFT rise from the disk and can accelerate to 20-30 km/s causing periodic outflows. Magnetic field of the disk counteracts the buoyancy, and the MFT oscillate near the disk’s surface with periods of 10-100 days. We demonstrate that rising and oscillating MFT can cause the IR-variability of the accretion disks of young stars.

AGB stars are important contributors of processed matter to the ISM. However, the physical and chemical mechanisms involved in its ejection are still poorly known. This process is expected to have remarkable effects in the innermost envelope, where the dust grains are formed, the gas is accelerated, the chemistry is active, and the radiative excitation becomes important. A good tracer of this region in C-rich stars is SiS, an abundant refractory molecule that can display maser lines, very sensitive to changes in the physical conditions. We present high angular resolution interferometer observations (HPBW ≳0.″.25) of the v = 0 J = 14 – 13 and 15 – 14 SiS maser lines towards the archetypal AGB star IRC+10216, carried out with CARMA and ALMA to explore the inner 1” region around the central star. We also present an ambitious monitoring of these lines along one single pulsation period carried out with the IRAM 30 m telescope.

KIC 4851217 is a short period eclipsing binary (P = 2.47 days) in the field of the Kepler K1 mission. As well as variability caused by the eclipses, low-amplitude pulsations are also present in the data. A frequency analysis of the residual light-curve revealed δ Sct pulsations in the frequency range from 15–21 d−1 with amplitudes up to 3.5 mmag. Strong linear coupling (fi = fp + kforb) to orbital frequency was found, indicating tidally locked modes. From an analysis of 5 selected groups of frequencies we identified a radial mode on the secondary component, 3 dipole modes (l = |m| = 1), one of them present on the secondary component, and a quadrupole mode (l = |m| = 2), also located on the secondary component.

Once the age and metallicity are fixed, the colour distribution of horizontal branch stars in a globular cluster depends on few parameters: the helium abundance of the population and the mass lost during the pre-HB stages. These parameters are usually derived from the HB itself, hence they are degenerate. Breaking this degeneracy and understanding their role is a tricky and challenging problem that no study has solved yet. Combining the information obtained from the chromosome maps and the analysis of multi-band photometry with state of the art stellar evolution models, we can obtain a solid estimate of Y for the various stellar populations in a GC. We will then have, for the first time, the possibility to break the parameters’ degeneracy on the HB, understand the role of the mass loss, and lay the foundation to build another piece of the multiple populations mosaic.

The large-scale magnetic field in the accretion disks of young stars is investigated. Main features of our magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) model of the accretion disks and typical simulation results are presented. We discuss the role of MHD effects, ionization structure, magnetic field geometry and strength of the accretion disks.

Accurate (< 10%) distances of Galactic star clusters allow a precise estimation of the physical parameters of any physically associated Planetary Nebula (PN) and also that of its central star (CSPN) and its progenitor. The progenitor’s mass can be related to the PN’s chemical characteristics and, furthermore, provides additional data for the widely used white dwarf (WD) initial-to-final mass relation (IFMR) that is crucial for tracing the development of both carbon and nitrogen in entire galaxies. To date, there is only one PN (PHR1315- 6555) confirmed to be physically associated with a Galactic open cluster (ESO 96 -SC04) that has a turn-off mass ∼2Mʘ. Our deep HST photometry was used for the search of the CSPN of this currently unique PN. In this work, we present our results.

Our poster presented a new analysis of the transit-time variations displayed by the extrasolar planet Kepler-410Ab. We assumed that the observed changes in the transit times are caused by the gravitational influence of another body in the system. To determine the mass of that perturbing body, we considered the light-time effect and an analytical approximation of the perturbation model. The solutions resulting from both methods gave comparable results, with an orbital period of 970 days and a slightly eccentric orbit for the third body. We proposed two possible models of a perturbing body orbiting a common barycentre with Kepler-410A: a single star with mass of at least 0.906 M⊙, or a binary star with a total component mass of at least 2.15 M⊙.

Using an evolutionary population synthesis code, we modeled the universal, featureless X-ray luminosity function of high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) in star-forming galaxies. We put constraints on the natal kicks, super-Eddington accretion factor, as well as common envelope prescriptions usually adopted (i.e., the αCE formalism and the γ algorithm), and presented the detailed properties of HMXBs under different models, which may be investigated further by future high-resolution X-ray and optical observations.

Several problems contribute to difficulties in interpreting transient celestial phenomena as described in Chinese records. Frameworks are an overarching problem. Tianwen, the modern Chinese term for astronomy, in pre-modern times included meteorological phenonemena and was concerned with omenology. Manuscripts that include star charts and comets but also meteorological phenomena and omen reading texts were routinely reframed in modern scholarship to appear as if they included only astronomical content. The scope of pre-modern tianwen, however, was broader than its modern sense. Pre-modern celestial phenomena had political and religious significance. Apparent ambiguity arises from the presence of both meteorological and astronomical phenomena in a single category and from features of the classical Chinese language. Accounting for these problems is essential for research into transient phenomena using historical archives.
