Since 2013, we are performing with the Nancay Radio Telescope (NRT) a monitoring program of > 100 Galactic disk OH/IR stars, having bright 1612-MHz OH maser emission. The variations of the maser emission are used to probe the underlying stellar variability. We wish to understand how the large-amplitude variations are lost during the AGB – post-AGB transition. The fading out of pulsations with steadily declining amplitudes seems to be a viable process.

The six LIGO detections of merging black holes (BHs) allowed to infer slow spin values for the two pre-merging BHs. The three cases where the spins of the BHs can be determined in high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) show that those BHs have high spin values. We discuss here scenarios explaining these differences in spin properties in these two classes of object.

This poster presented results from the Large Magellanic Cloud Near-Infrared Synoptic Survey (LMCNISS) for classical and Type II Cepheid variables that were identified in the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-III) catalogue. Multi-wavelength time-series data for classical Cepheid variables are used to study light-curve structures as a function of period and wavelength. We exploited a sample of ∼1400 classical and ∼80 Type II Cepheid variables to derive Period–Wesenheit relations that combine both optical and near-infrared data. The new Period–Luminosity and Wesenheit relations were used to estimate distances to several Local-Group galaxies (using classical Cepheids) and to Galactic globular clusters (using Type II Cepheids). By appealing to a statistical framework, we found that fundamental-mode classical Cepheid Period–Luminosity relations are non-linear around 10–18 days at optical and near-IR wavelengths. We also suggested that a non-linear relation provides a better constraint on the Cepheid Period–Luminosity relation in Type Ia Supernovæ host galaxies, though it has a negligible effect on the systematic uncertainties affecting the local measurement of the Hubble constant.

Using spatially resolved spectroscopy from the SDSS-IV Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey, we identify 69 dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies in the nearby Universe fainter than Mr = −19 (MB = −18), selected independently of morphology and environment. The majority exhibit coherent rotation in their stellar kinematics, consistent with an origin as morphologically transformed disk galaxies. Six galaxies in this dE sample appear to host Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) that are likely preventing current star formation through maintenance mode feedback. The ionised gas component of these dEs is typically kinematically offset from the stellar component, suggesting the gas is either recently accreted or outflowing. We therefore demonstrate the potential of IFU spectroscopy for understanding the physical properties of dwarf galaxies in detail.

The Earth is dramatically carbon poor comparing to the interstellar medium and the proto-sun. The carbon to silicon ratios in inner solar system objects show a correlation with heliocentric distance, which suggests that the destruction of carbon grains has occurred before planet formation. To examine this hypothesis, we perform model calculations using a chemical reaction network under the physical conditions typical of protoplanetary disks. Our results show that, when carbonaceous grains are destroyed and converted into the gas phase and the gas becomes carbon-rich, the abundances of carbon-bearing species such as HCN and carbon-chain molecules, increase dramatically near the midplane, while oxygen-bearing species such as H2O and CO2 are depleted. The carbon to silicon ratios obtained by our model calculations qualitatively reproduce the observed gradient with disk radius, but there are some quantitative discrepancies from the observed values of the solar system objects. We adopted the model of a disk around a Herbig Ae star and performed line radiative transfer calculations to examine the effect of carbon grain destruction through observations with ALMA. The results indicate that HCN, H13 CN and c-C3 H2 may be good tracers of this process.

We study the minor mergers of galaxies using simulations. For this we use GADGET2 code. We present results of simulations of minor mergers of disc galaxies of mass ratio 1:10. These simulations consist of collisionless as well as hydrodynamical runs including a gaseous component in the galactic disc of primary galaxy. Our goal is to establish the characteristics of discs obtained after the merger.We observe that the primary galaxy discs are not destroyed after the merger. We take different initial conditions for the primary galaxy varying the gas percentage in disc from 0–40 percentage and study the thickness of the disc after the merger. We generally observe that the thickness of the disc increases after the merger for any gas percentage. We also observe that as the gas percentage increases in the disc of initial primary galaxy, the increase in the thickness keeps decreasing.

We have improved the treatment of dust opacity from the small-particle limit approximation to size-dependent which leads to models with smaller grains, lower dust-to-gas ratios, but about the same mass-loss rates and outflow velocities. The K-magnitudes get brighter, whereas the V-magnitudes can be either brighter or dimmer depending on the wind properties.

We report the detection of the Zeeman effect in the 44 GHz Class I methanol maser line toward the star forming region DR21W. The 44 GHz methanol masers in this source occur in a ∼3” linear structure that runs from northwest to southeast, with the two dominant components at each end, and several weaker maser components in between. Toward a 93 Jy maser in the dominant northwestern component, we find a significant Zeeman detection of −23.4 ± 3.2 Hz. If we use the recently published result of Lankhaar et al. (2018) that the F=5-4 hyperfine transition is responsible for the 44 GHz methanol maser line, then their value of z = −0.92 Hz mG−1 yields a line-of-sight magnetic field of Blos =25.4 ± 3.5 mG. If Class I methanol masers are pumped in high density regions with n∼107–8 cm−3, then magnetic fields in these maser regions should be a few to several tens of mG. Therefore, our result in DR21W is certainly consistent with the expected values.

Using the above noted splitting factor in past Zeeman effect detections in Class I methanol masers reported by Sarma & Momjian (2011) and Momjian & Sarma (2017) in the star forming regions OMC-2 and DR21(OH) result in Blos values of 20.0 ± 1.2 mG and 58.2 ± 2.9 mG, respectively. These are also consistent with the expected values.

Spectroscopy and photometry have revealed existence, complexity and properties of the multiple stellar populations (mPOPs) hosted in Galactic globular clusters. However, the conundrum of the formation and evolution of mPOPs is far from being completely exploited: the available pieces of information seem not enough to shed light on these topics. Astrometry, and in particular high-precision proper motions, can provide us the sought-after answers about how mPOPs formed and have evolved in these ancient stellar systems. In the following, I present a brief overview of the observational results on the internal kinematics of the mPOPs in some GCs thanks to Hubble Space Telescope high-precision proper motions.

Barium (Ba) stars form via mass-transfer in binary systems, and can subsequently interact with their white dwarf companion in a second stage of binary interaction. We used observations of main-sequence Ba systems as input for our evolutionary models, and try to reproduce the orbits of the Ba giants. We show that to explain short and sometimes eccentric orbits, additional interaction mechanisms are needed along the RGB.

We have searched for a sign of the past dynamical disturbance events on NGC 1068, an archetypical Type-2 Seyfert galaxy, using deep and wide optical imaging data by the Subaru telescope. The data taken by Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) as well as the archived data by Suprime-Cam reveal several faint outer structures of the galaxy, most of which were never reported before. We discover three large (re = 3 -5.5 kpc), extremely diffuse objects (UDOs) within 45 kpc from the center of NGC 1068. We suggest that two of these UDOs are actually a part of a large loop-like structure surrounding NGC 1068. Such an extremely faint loop or stream is the direct evidence for a past minor merger event. The third UDO has a distorted morphology, suggesting that it is under the influence of strong tidal field. Furthermore, we have identified another ultra-diffuse but compact (μ0,r > 25 mag arcsec-2, re ~ 0.8kpc) dwarf galaxy within ~140 kpc from NGC 1068. We speculate that this ultra-diffuse dwarf could be the object related to the ancient tidal disruption event (tidal dwarf) during the early mass assembly period of NGC 1068. We also detect an asymmetric outer one-arm structure emanated from the western edge of the outermost disk of NGC 1068 together with a ripple-like structure at the opposite side. These structures are also expected to arise in a late phase (up to several billion years ago) of a minor merger, according to numerical simulations. Our findings are consistent with the idea that the AGN activity in NGC 1068 is caused by a past minor merger.

We introduce the Galaxy IFU Spectroscopy Tool (GIST), a convenient, all-in-one and multi-purpose tool for the analysis and visualisation of already reduced (integral-field) spectroscopic data. In particular, the pipeline performs all steps from read-in and preparation of data to its scientific analysis and visualisation in publication-quality plots. The code measures stellar kinematics and non-parametric star formation histories using the pPXF routine (Cappellari & Emsellem 2004; Cappellari 2017), performs an emission-line analysis with the GandALF procedure (Sarzi et al. 2006; Falcón-Barroso et al. 2006), and determines absorption line-strength indices and their corresponding single stellar population equivalent population properties (Kuntschner et al.2006; Martín-Navarro et al. 2018). The dedicated visualisation routine Mapviewer facilitates the access of all data products in a sophisticated graphical user interface with fully interactive plots.

The first detection of gravitational waves from a merging double neutron star (DNS) binary implies a much higher rate of DNS coalescences in the local Universe than typically estimated on theoretical grounds. The recent study by Chruslinska et al. (2018) shows that apart from being particularly sensitive to the common envelope treatment, DNS merger rates appear rather robust against variations of several factors probed in their study (e.g. conservativeness of the mass transfer, angular momentum loss, and natal kicks), unless extreme assumptions are made. Confrontation with the improving observational limits may allow to rule out some of the extreme models. To correctly compare model predictions with observational limits one has to account for the other factors that affect the rates. One of those factors relates to the assumed history of star formation and chemical evolution of the Universe and its impact on the final results needs to be better constrained.

The origin of the chemical anomalies in star clusters is still an open question, although much effort has been employed both from a theoretical and observational point of view. The exploration of the dependence of such multiple stellar populations based on certain cluster properties (e.g. mass, age, metallicity) has represented a compelling line of investigation so far. Here I report an overview of the results obtained from our latest surveys aimed at characterising the phenomenon of chemical variations in star clusters that are much younger with respect to the ancient globular clusters. The fundamental question we are asking is whether these abundance patterns are only restricted to the old massive clusters; and if not, is there a difference between young and old objects?

Massive stars ( ${\rm{M}} > \,8{M_ \odot }$ ) often form in parsec-scale molecular clumps that collapse and fragment, leading to the birth of a cluster of stellar objects. The role of magnetic fields during the formation of massive dense cores is still not clear. The steady improvement in sensitivity of (sub)millimeter interferometers over the past decade enabled observations of dust polarization of large samples of massive star formation regions. We carried out a polarimetric survey with the Submillimeter Array of 14 massive star forming clumps in continuum emission at a wavelength of 0.89 mm. This unprecedentedly large sample of massive star forming regions observed by a submillimeter interferometer before the advent of ALMA revealed compelling evidence of strong magnetic influence on the gas dynamics from 1 pc to 0.1 pc scales. We found that the magnetic fields in dense cores tend to be either parallel or perpendicular to the mean magnetic fields in their parental molecular clumps. Furthermore, the main axis of protostellar outflows does not appear to be aligned with the mean magnetic fields in the dense core where outflows are launched. These findings suggest that from 1 pc to 0.1 pc scales, magnetic fields are dynamically important in the collapse of clumps and the formation of dense cores. From the dense core scale to the accretion disk scale of ∼102 au, however, gravity and angular momentum appear to be more dominant relative to the magnetic field.

This poster presented results from a detailed analysis of observed and theoretical light-curves of classical Cepheid variables in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds. The theoretical light-curves were based on non-linear convective hydrodynamical pulsation models; the observational data were taken from ongoing wide-field variability surveys. The variation which we found in theoretical and observed light-curve parameters as a function of period, wavelength and metallicity was used to constrain the input physics to the pulsation models, such as the mass–luminosity relations obeyed by Cepheid variables. We also accounted for the variation in the convective efficiency as entered into the stellar pulsation models and its impact on the theoretical amplitudes and Period-Luminosity relations for Cepheid variables.

Obliquity (axial tilt) and its variability could play an important role in the climate and habitability of a planet. We explore the spin-axis dynamics of two specific habitable zone exoplanets, Kepler-62f and Kepler-186f, using numerical and analytical techniques. Based on our current understanding of their orbital architecture, we find that, in contrast with the typical conditions in the Solar System, Kepler-62f and 186f should have low obliquity variations except in fine-tuned conditions. Extra undetected planetary companions and/or the existence of a satellite could either stabilize or destabilize obliquities at a variety of values.

HIFI instrument onboard the Herschel satellite provided an unprecedented number of detections of rotational transitions of ammonia in circumstellar envelopes of evolved stars including massive red supergiants, Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB), and post-AGB stars. The chemistry of ammonia formation in the circumstellar envelopes of evolved stars is poorly understood. The mechanisms proposed for its formation are processes behind the shock front, photochemistry in the inner part of the clumpy envelope, and formation on dust grains. We present results of the non-local thermodynamical equilibrium (non-LTE) radiative transfer modeling of ammonia transitions, mainly of the ground-state rotational one NH3 JK = 10 – 00 at 572.5 GHz, in selected AGB stars, aiming at the quantitative estimation of the NH3 abundance. The model of ammonia includes IR radiative pumping via v2 = 1 vibrational band at 10 μm.

We give an overview of Focus Meeting 5 on the new field of Terra-Astronomy.

The existence intermediate mass black holes (IMBH, MBH ≲ 106M⊙) at the centers low-mass galaxies with stellar masses between (1–10)×10M⊙ are key to constraining the origin of black hole (BH) seeds and understanding the physics deriving the co-evolution of central BHs and their host galaxies. However, finding and weighing IMBH is challenging. Here, we present the first observational evidence for such IMBHs at the centers of the five nearest early-type galaxies (D < 3.5 Mpc, ETGs) revealed by adaptive optics kinematics from Gemini and VLT and high-resolution HST spectroscopy. We find that all five galaxies appear to host IMBHs with four of the five having masses below 1 million M⊙ and the lowest mass BH being only ∼7,000 M⊙. This work provides a first glimpse of the demographics of IMBHs in this galaxy mass range and at velocity dispersions < 70 km/s, and thus provides an important extension to the bulge mass and galaxy dispersion scaling relations. The ubiquity of central BHs in these galaxies provides a unique constraint on BH seed formation scenarios, favoring a formation mechanism that produces an abundance of low-mass seed BHs.
