We perform six N-body simulations reproducing the interaction between the Milky Way and its satellite galaxies, in order to address the deposit of satellite debris in the Galactic environment. We find that most of the baryons survive inside their host satellites and that most of the baryonic debris ends up in the inner regions of the Milky Way, in contrast to the more uniform distribution of dark matter debris. We also look at the debris Inertia tensor in the inner regions of the Milky Way and find a lower minor-to-major axis ratio for baryons than dark matter. We plan to explore the phase-space distribution of the debris ending in the Galactic disk and bulge. We also plan further simulations including gas dynamics to study the impact of gas on the process.

In the framework of this project, the K2 RR Lyrae Survey, we proposed to observe thousands of RR Lyrae stars along the Ecliptic in Kepler’s K2 Mission. The high photometric precision and the 80-to-90-day continuous coverage enabled us to investigate in unprecedented detail the light variations of these variable stars which can trace galactic structure. The survey enabled us to conduct a thorough statistical study of RR Lyrae pulsation dynamics, including both old and more recently discovered dynamical phenomena such as resonances, non-radial modes, period doubling and the Blazhko effect. This talk described the K2 RR Lyrae Survey, and discussed the prospects of combining our endeavour with Gaia, LSST and other surveys in the context of studies of Galactic archeology.

Using Python 3, astropy and astrometry.net, we have developed a pipeline to obtain photometric light curves of asteroids automatically queried by the SkyBoT database from sequential FITS images. The pipeline provides: pre-reduction of data, astrometry, standard differential photometry and light curves by auto-selecting multiple comparison stars (maximum user-defined) from NOMAD catalog via VizieR. The code is an open source, free and hosted on GitHub with the GNU GPL v3 license.

Since a great number of star stream and substructures near M31/M33 have been discovered in Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey (PAndAS) and variations of star stream density may trace the dark matter sub-halos, it is good opportunity to study the dark matter sub-halos with the star streams. Further it has been proved that dozens of halo star clusters have the relations with the star stream. As Prime Focus Spectroscopy (PFS) of the 8.2-m Subaru telescope have the powerful ability (I ∼ 22.3 mag) to observe ∼ 2400 objects at a time, it can be used to observe the giant star streams, faint halo star clusters and dwarf galaxies, which provides excellent opportunity to investigate the sub-halos of M31. In addition, we are involved with the Local Volume Mapper (LVM) of SDSS-V program, which may also provide more informations for the star clusters of the Local Group, especially for M31. Finally since we have done series of work with Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST), we will continue the spectroscopic observations for more star clusters and giant stars of M31/M33.

We review the mineralogy of circumstellar dust grains around AGB stars as investigated through infrared spectroscopic studies. The expanding envelopes of AGB stars are chemically fresh because of the strong binding force of CO molecules. O-rich dust grains (silicates and oxides) form in O-rich envelopes and C-rich dust grains (amorphous carbon and SiC) form in C-rich envelopes. Amorphous silicate grains can be crystallized by annealing processes in various environments of AGB stars. We also discuss dust mineralogy for objects that have undergone chemical transition processes.

Although the stellar halo accounts for just ∼1% of the total stellar mass of the Milky Way, the kinematics of halo stars can tell us a lot about the origins and evolution of our Galaxy. It has been shown that the high transverse velocity stars in Gaia DR2 reveal a double sequence in the Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram, indicating a duality in the local halo within 1 kpc. We fit these stars by updating the popular Besançon/Galaxia model, incorporating the latest observational results for the stellar halo. We are able to obtain a good match to the Gaia data and provide new constraints on the properties of the disc and halo. In particular, we show that the thick disc contribution to this high velocity tail is small, but not negligible, and likely has an influence on the red sequence of the HR diagram.

M87, in the Virgo cluster, allows us to study the interaction of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) with its hot gaseous atmosphere. Deep Chandra observations reveal a nearly circular shock front with a Mach number of 1.2 and a radius of 13 kpc which is driven by a central cavity inflated by an SMBH outburst began 12 million years ago. An outburst with an energy of a ~5×57 ergs and a duration of ~2 Myrs provides a good match to all the constraints. For an outburst repetition rate of about 12 Myrs (the outburst age), the outburst energy is sufficient to balance the radiative cooling of the gas. The outburst duration in M87 argues for a “gentle” (long duration) outburst that does not generate strong shocks and where much of the outburst energy is deposited in the cavities that then transfer energy to the surrounding gas as they buoyantly rise.

VLT instruments and ALMA have revolutionized in the past five years our view and understanding of how disks turn into planetary systems. They provide exquisite insights into non-axisymmetric structures likely closely related to ongoing planet formation processes. The following cannot be a complete review of the physical and chemical properties of disks; instead I focus on a few selected aspects. I will review our current understanding of the physical properties (e.g. solid and gas mass content, snow and ice lines) and chemical composition of planet forming disks at ages of 1-few Myr, especially in the context of the planetary systems that are forming inside them. I will highlight recent advances achieved by means of consistent multi-wavelength studies of gas AND dust in protoplanetary disks.

Cir X-1 is a young X-ray binary exhibiting X-ray flux changes of four orders of magnitude over several decades. It has been observed many times since the launch of the Chandra X-ray Observatory with high energy transmission grating spectrometer and each time the source gave us a vastly different look. At its very lowest X-ray flux we found a single 1.7 keV blackbody spectrum with an emission radius of 0.5 km. Since the neutron star in Cir X-1 is only few thousand years old we identify this as emission from an accretion column since at this youth the neutron star is assumed to be highly magnetized. At an X-ray flux of 1.8×10−11 erg cm−2 s−1 this implies a moderate magnetic field of a few times of 1011 G. The photoionized X-ray emission line properties at this low flux are consistent with B5-type companion wind. We suggest that Cir X-1 is a very young Be-star binary.

We have compiled historical observations, spanning ∼100 years, for a dozen of the best-studied LBVs in the Local Group. We described how we prepared structure functions for their light-curves and calculated two parameters (the structure function slope and the characteristic time-scale) to describe the behaviour of the LBVs. The sensitivity of those parameters to the variability behaviour of the stars was tested with a number of photometric data sets. The slope of the structure function may anticorrelate with the time-scale. These types of variable stellar objects are crucial to studies of stellar variability and the final stages of stellar evolution.

The dramatic transformation of the spherical outflows of AGB stars into the extreme aspherical geometries seen during the planetary nebula (PN) phase is widely believed to be linked to binarity and is likely driven by the associated production of fast jets and central disks/torii. We first briefly summarize results from the imaging surveys of large samples of young PNe and pre-PNe with HST which show that almost all objects have bipolar, multipolar and elliptical morphologies, with widespread presence of point-symmetric structure. We describe a relatively new technique of using UV photometic observations of large AGB star samples to search for binarity and associated accretion activity, and follow-up studies using UV spectroscopy and X-ray observations. We present results from studies of individual objects in transition to the PN phase, highlighting observational techniques being used to determine jet properties that can constrain the accretion modes that power these jets.

We report on the detection of long-term X-ray periodicity from the Be/X-ray binary pulsar X Persei. Based on over 23 years of X-ray data observed using RXTE/ASM, Swift/BAT and MAXI/GSC, we confirmed that X Persei exhibits quasi-periodic X-ray flares with a period of ∼7 years. The recurrence timescale corresponds to approximately 10 times its binary orbital period of 250 days. Spectral and hardness ratio changes were not detected along with long-term periodic activity. If we interpret the observed 7 year periodicity of X-ray band flux as a superorbital modulation, then this would be the first observation among the Be/X-ray binaries.

NGC 1275 has been known as a ppint-like X-ray source with a continuum and a Fe-K line. Unlike radio and GeV/TeV gamma-ray emissions, origin of X-ray emission is not yet understood; is it a jet emission like blazars or an accretion corona emission like Seyfert galaxies. X-ray emission is important to determine the SED of jet emission to constrain jet parameters and also understand the relation between accretion and jet. Here we report a recent X-ray probing of NGC 1275 nuclear region with Hitomi/SXS, Swift/XRT, and Suzaku/XIS. Hitomi/SXS gave the first opportunity to measure a Fe-K line of AGNs with several eV resolution. The line center is consistent with the neutral iron emission, and the width is constrained to be 500-1600 km/s (FWHM). This ruled out the origin of broad line region and inner accretion disk. A low-covering-fraction molecular torus or a rotating molecular disk around pc scales, illuminated by accretion corona emission, is suggested as a possible origin. For the continuum emission, Suzaku/XIS monitor observations revealed that the X-ray flux has gradually increased as the GeV gamma-ray flux. Swift/XRT showed a several-days flux increase, associated with the GeV gamma-ray flare. These results on the continuum emission suggests a contribution of jet emission to the X-ray emission. Based on the combined results of Fe-K line and continuum, we discuss some scenarios for X-ray emitting region.

3D global radiation MHD simulations of gas and dust in protoplanetary disks allow us to understand the dynamical and thermal evolution of protoplanetary disks. At the same time, recent observations in the mm-dust emission by the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) allow us to resolve structures at scales of the disk scale height.

From our recent simulation results by Flock et al. (2015) and Flock et al. (2017) we are able to directly compare for the first time detailed observational constraints from high-resolution observations by ALMA with the gas and dust dynamics obtain in 3D state-of-art simulations of protoplanetary disks. Especially measurements of the dust scale height obtained from the disk around the young system HL Tau allow us to compare for different gas disk instability models. Further we use Monte Carlo radiation transfer models of the dusty disk to compare our results of the dust scale height in 3D radiation HD and MHD simulations. Our findings are that magnetized models fit perfectly the observational constraints, showing a strongly settled disk, while hydrodynamical turbulence leads to a dust uplifting which is larger than expected. These results open a new window to compare future multi-wavelength observations to simulations.

The Milky Way’s (MW) satellite population is a powerful probe of warm dark matter (WDM) models as the abundance of small substructures is very sensitive to the properties of the WDM particle. However, only a partial census of the MW’s complement of satellite galaxies exists because surveys of the MW’s close environs are incomplete both in depth and in sky coverage. We present a new Bayesian analysis that combines the sample of satellites recently discovered by the Dark Energy Survey (DES) with those found in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to estimate the total satellite galaxy luminosity function down to Mv = 0. We find that there should be at least $124_{ - 27}^{ + 40}$ (68% CL, statistical error) satellites as bright or brighter than Mv = 0 within 300 kpc of the Sun, with only a weak dependence on MW halo mass. When it comes online the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope should detect approximately half of this population. We also show that WDM models infer the same number of satellites as in ΛCDM, which will allow us to rule out those models that produce insufficient substructure to be viable.

Nuclear star clusters (NSCs) are found in at least 70% of all galaxies, but their formation path is still unclear. In the most common scenarios, NSCs form in-situ from the galaxy’s central gas reservoir, through merging of globular clusters (GCs), or through a combination of the two. As the scenarios pose different expectations for angular momentum and stellar population properties of the NSC in comparison to the host galaxy and the GC system, it is necessary to characterise the stellar light, NSC, and GCs simultaneously. Wide-field observations with modern integral field units such as the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) allow to perform such studies. However, at large distances, NSCs usually are not resolved in MUSE observations. The particularly large NSC (Reff ∼ 66 pc) of the early-type galaxy FCC 47 at distance of ∼20 Mpc is an exception and is therefore an ideal laboratory to constrain NSC formation of external galaxies.

The unprecedented amount and accuracy of kinematic data from the second release of the Gaia mission have started revolutionizing our understanding of the dynamics of the Milky Way disk. The detailed stellar velocity field in the Galactic disk should allow us to constrain with unprecedented precision the parameters of the non-axisymmetric modes of the disk. We present here the status of our current modelling efforts in this area, and their implication on the dynamics of the Galactic bar in particular.

The Hubble Source Catalog (HSC) combines lists of sources detected on images obtained with the WFPC2, ACS and WFC3 instruments aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and now available in the Hubble Legacy Archive. The catalogue contains time-domain information for about two million of its sources detected using the same instrument and filter on at least five HST visits. The Hubble Catalog of Variables (HCV) aims to identify HSC sources showing significant brightness variations. A magnitude-dependent threshold in the median absolute deviation of photometric measurements (an outlier-resistant measure of light-curve scatter) is adopted as the variability detection statistic. It is supplemented with a cut in χred2 that removes sources with large photometric errors. A pre-processing procedure involving bad image identification, outlier rejection and computation of local magnitude zero-point corrections is applied to the HSC light-curves before computing the variability detection statistics. About 52 000 HSC sources have been identified as candidate variables, among which 7,800 show variability in more than one filter. Visual inspection suggests that ∼70% of the candidates detected in multiple filters are true variables, while the remaining ∼30% are sources with aperture photometry corrupted by blending, imaging artefacts or image processing anomalies. The candidate variables have AB magnitudes in the range 15–27m, with a median of 22m. Among them are the stars in our own and nearby galaxies, and active galactic nuclei.

We present our results from a mid-infrared interferometric survey targeted at the planet-forming region in the circumstellar disks around low- and intermediate-mass young stars. Our sample consists of 82 objects, including T Tauri stars, Herbig Ae stars, and young eruptive stars. Our main results are: 1) Disks around T Tauri stars are similar to those around Herbig Ae stars, but are relatively more extended once we account for stellar luminosity. 2) From the distribution of the sizes of the mid-infrared emitting region we find that inner dusty disk holes may be present in roughly half of the sample. 3) Our analysis of the silicate spectral feature reveals that the dust in the inner ~1 au region of disks is generally more processed than that in the outer regions. 4) The dust in the disks of T Tauri stars typically show weaker silicate emission in the N band spectrum, compared to Herbig Ae stars, which may indicate a general difference in the disk structure.
