The recycling of matter between the interstellar medium (ISM) and stars are key evolutionary drivers of a galaxy's baryonic matter. The Spitzer wavelengths provide a sensitive probe of circumstellar and interstellar dust and hence, allow us to study the physical processes of the ISM, the formation of new stars and the injection of mass by evolved stars and their relationships on the galaxy-wide scale of the LMC. Due to its proximity, favorable viewing angle, multi-wavelength information, and measured tidal interactions with the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), the LMC is uniquely suited for surveying the agents of a galaxy's evolution (SAGE), the ISM and stars. The SAGE-LMC project is measuring these key transition points in the life cycle of baryonic matter in the LMC. Here we present a connective view of the preliminary quantities estimated from SAGE-LMC for the total mass of the ISM, the galaxy wide star formation rate and the current stellar mass loss return. For context, we compare these numbers to the LMC's stellar mass.

We observed an area of 10 deg2 of the Large Magellanic Cloud using the Infrared Camera on board AKARI. The observations were carried out using five imaging filters (3, 7, 11, 15, and 24 μm) and a dispersion prism (2 − 5 μm, λ/Δλ ~ 20) equipped in the IRC. The 11 and 15 μm data, which are unique to AKARI IRC, allow us to construct color-magnitude diagrams that are useful to identify stars with circumstellar dust. We found a new sequence in the color-magnitude diagram, which is attributed to red giants with luminosity fainter than that of the tip of the first red giant branch. We suggest that this sequence is likely to be related to the broad emission feature of aluminium oxide at 11.5 μm.

Detailed 4.8 and 8.64 GHz radio images of the entire Large and Small Magellanic Clouds with half-power beamwidths of 35″ at 4.8 GHz and 22″ at 8.64 GHz have been obtained using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. Full polarimetric observations were made. Several thousand mosaic positions were used to cover an area of 6° on a side for the LMC and 4.5° for the SMC. These images have sufficient spatial resolution (~ 8 and 5 pc, respectively) and sensitivity (3σ of 1.5 mJy beam−1) to identify most of the individual supernova remnants and H ii regions and also, in combination with available data from the Parkes 64-m telescope, the structure of the smooth emission in these galaxies. We have recently revised the early data analysis (Dickel et al. 2005) by increasing the CLEAN cutoff limit to recover more intermediate-spacing data and thus present more accurate brightnesses for extended sources. In addition, limited data using the sixth antenna at 4.5 – 6 km baselines are available to distinguish bright point sources (< 3″ and 2″, respectively) and to help estimate sizes of individual sources smaller than the resolution of the full survey. The resulting database will be valuable for statistical studies and comparisons with X-ray, optical, and infrared surveys of the LMC with similar resolution.

In the study of stars, the high energy domain occupies a place of choice, since it is the only one able to directly probe the most violent phenomena: indeed, young pre-main sequence objects, hot massive stars, or X-ray binaries are best revealed in X-rays. However, previously available X-ray observatories often provided only crude information on individual objects in the Magellanic Clouds. The advent of the highly efficient X-ray facilities XMM-Newton and Chandra has now dramatically increased the sensitivity and the spatial resolution available to X-ray astronomers, thus enabling a fairly easy determination of the properties of individual sources in the LMC.

The third phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-III) has been conducted since 2001 and regularly monitors the brightness of about 200 million stars. The OGLE-III fields cover both Magellanic Clouds and a large area in the Galactic bulge and disk. Here we describe the first parts of the OGLE-III Catalog of Variable Stars which is being prepared on the basis of these data. We present the principles of the catalog and methods used to select variable stars. We expect that the whole catalog will contain at least one million variable stars of all types. The catalog includes the list of variable sources along with their basic parameters, high precision multi-epoch I and V-band photometry and accurate astrometry. All objects are classified and cross-identified with previously published catalogs. We also carry out a preliminary statistical analysis of these huge samples of variable stars.

Our discovery and analysis of 452 new planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has tripled the number of known LMC PNe, providing a powerful new resource for probing the kinematics of the LMC as well as contributing fresh insight into the PN luminosity function (PNLF) which we now extend to over 10 magnitudes in [O iii] and Hα. These discoveries have resulted from a new, deep (R ≡ 22), high resolution Hα map of the central 25 deg2 of the LMC, achieved by a process of multi-exposure median co-addition of a dozen 2-hour exposures. The resulting map is at least 1 magnitude deeper than the best wide-field narrow-band LMC images currently available and has proven a major resource for the discovery of emission objects of all kinds. As a result, the near complete sample of the PN population in the central 25 deg2 of the LMC has permitted truly meaningful quantitative determinations of the PNLF, distribution, abundances and kinematics. We briefly describe the importance of these PN discoveries, the additional spectroscopic confirmation of >2,000 compact emission sources, flux calibration, the newly derived electron temperatures and electron densities.

We present an analysis of the spatial distribution of various stellar populations within the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. We use optically selected stellar samples with mean ages between ~9 and ~1000 Myr, and existing stellar cluster catalogues to investigate how stellar structures form and evolve within the LMC/SMC. We use two statistical techniques to study the evolution of structure within these galaxies, the Q-parameter and the two-point correlation function (TPCF). In both galaxies we find the stars are born with a high degree of substructure (i.e. are highly fractal) and that the stellar distribution approaches that of the “background” population on timescales similar to the crossing times of the galaxy (~ 80 Myr & ~ 150 Myr for the SMC/LMC respectively). By comparing our observations to simple models of structural evolution we find that “popping star clusters” do not significantly influence structural evolution in these galaxies. Instead we argue that general galactic dynamics are the main drivers, and that substructure will be erased in approximately the crossing time, regardless of spatial scale, from small clusters to whole galaxies. This can explain why many young Galactic clusters have high degrees of substructure, while others are smooth and centrally concentrated. We conclude with a general discussion on cluster “infant mortality”, in an attempt to clarify the time/spatial scales involved.

We describe an ongoing, large-scale, photometric and spectroscopic survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) periphery. This survey uses Washington M, T2 + DDO51 photometry to identify distant LMC red giant branch (RGB) star candidates; multi-object spectroscopy is used to confirm the stellar surface gravities of these RGB stars and their association with the LMC (e.g., through radial velocities). The survey now encompasses hundreds of fields ranging from the LMC center with full azimuthal coverage around the LMC and out to 23° from the LMC center. We have confirmed the existence of RGB stars with (the unusual) Magellanic velocities out to the radial limit of this survey coverage. From data in a subsample of these fields, we show that this extended population of stars makes up a diffuse structure enveloping the LMC with a two-dimensional distribution resembling a classical halo with a shallow de Vaucouleurs profile and a broad metallicity spread around a typical mean value of [Fe/H] ~ −1.0.

A sample of 33 eclipsing binaries observed in a field of the SMC with FLAMES@VLT is presented. The radial velocity curves obtained, together with existing OGLE light curves, allowed the determination of all stellar and orbital parameters of these binary systems. The mean distance modulus of the observed part of the SMC is 19.05 mag, based on the 26 most reliable systems. Assuming an average error of 0.1 mag on the distance modulus to an individual system, and a gaussian distribution of the distance moduli, we obtain a 2-σ depth of 0.36 mag or 10.6 kpc. Some results on the kinematics of the binary stars and of the H ii gas are also given.

We used the red clump stars from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE II) survey and the Magellanic Cloud Photometric Survey (MCPS), to estimate the line-of-sight depth. The observed dispersion in the magnitude and colour distribution of red clump stars is used to estimate the line-of-sight depth, after correcting for the contribution due to other effects. This dispersion due to depth, has a range from minimum dispersion that can be estimated, to 0.46 mag (a depth of 500 pc to 10.44 kpc), in the LMC. In the case of the SMC, the dispersion ranges from minimum dispersion to 0.35 magnitude (a depth of 665 pc to 9.53 kpc). The thickness profile of the LMC bar indicates that it is flared. The average depth in the bar region is 4.0 ± 1.4 kpc. The halo of the LMC (using RR Lyrae stars) is found to have larger depth compared to the disk/bar, which supports the presence of an inner halo for the LMC. The large depth estimated for the LMC bar and the disk suggests that the LMC might have had minor mergers. In the case of the SMC, the bar depth (4.90 ± 1.23 kpc) and the disk depth (4.23 ± 1.48 kpc) are found to be within the standard deviations. We find evidence for an increase in depth near the optical center (up to 9 kpc). On the other hand, the estimated depth for the halo (RR Lyrae stars) and disk (RC stars) for the bar region of the SMC is found to be similar. Thus, increased depth and enhanced stellar as well as H i density near the optical center suggests that the SMC may have a bulge.

More than 50 years have elapsed since the first studies of star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. The wealth of data accumulated since then has not only revealed a large cluster system, but also a diversified one, filling loci in the age, mass and chemical abundance parameter space which are complementary to Galactic clusters. Catalogs and photometric samples currently available cover most of the cluster mass range. The expectations of relatively long cluster disruption timescales in the Clouds have been confirmed, allowing reliable assessments of the cluster initial mass function and of the cluster formation rate in the Clouds. Due to their proximity to the Galaxy, Magellanic clusters are also well resolved into stars. Analysis of colour—magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of clusters with different ages, masses and metallicities are useful tools to test dynamical effects such as mass loss due to stellar evolution, two-body relaxation, stellar evaporation, cluster interactions and tidal effects. The existence of massive and young Magellanic clusters has provided insight into the physics of cluster formation. The magnitudes and colours of different stellar types are confronted with stellar evolutionary tracks, thus constraining processes such as convective overshooting, stellar mass-loss, rotation and pre main-sequence evolution. Finally, the Magellanic cluster system may contribute with nearby and well studied counterparts of recently proposed types of extragalactic clusters, such as Faint Fuzzies and Diffuse Star Clusters.

We review our understanding of the kinematics of the LMC and the SMC, and their orbit around the Milky Way. The line-of-sight velocity fields of both the LMC and SMC have been mapped with high accuracy using thousands of discrete traces, as well as H i gas. The LMC is a rotating disk for which the viewing angles have been well established using various methods. The disk is elliptical in its disk plane. The disk thickness varies depending on the tracer population, with V/σ ranging from ~2–10 from the oldest to the youngest population. For the SMC, the old stellar population resides in a spheroidal distribution with considerable line-of-sight depth and low V/σ. Young stars and H i gas reside in a more irregular rotating disk. Mass estimates based on the kinematics indicate that each Cloud is embedded in a dark halo. Proper motion measurements with HST show that both galaxies move significantly more rapidly around the Milky Way than previously believed. This indicates that for a canonical 1012 M⊙ Milky Way the Clouds are only passing by us for the first time. Although a higher Milky Way mass yields a bound orbit, this orbit is still very different from what has been previously assumed in models of the Magellanic Stream. Hence, much of our understanding of the history of the Magellanic System and the formation of the Magellanic Stream may need to be revised. The accuracy of the proper motion data is insufficient to say whether or not the LMC and SMC are bound to each other, but bound orbits do exist within the proper motion error ellipse.

In HST Cycles 11 and 13 we obtained two epochs of ACS/HRC data for fields in the Magellanic Clouds centered on background quasars. We used these data to determine the proper motions of the LMC and SMC to better than 5% and 15% respectively. The results had a number of unexpected implications for the Milky Way-LMC-SMC system. The implied three-dimensional velocities were larger than previously believed and close to the escape velocity in a standard 1012 M⊙ Milky Way dark halo, implying that the Clouds may be on their first passage. Also, the relative velocity between the LMC and SMC was larger than expected, leaving open the possibility that the Clouds may not be bound to each other. To further verify and refine our results we requested an additional epoch of data in Cycle 16 which is being executed with WFPC2/PC due to the failure of ACS. We present the results of an ongoing analysis of these WFPC2 data which indicate good consistency with the two-epoch results.

The HST proper motion (PM) measurements of the Clouds have severe implications for their interaction history with the Milky Way (MW) and with each other. The Clouds are likely on their first passage about the MW and the SMC's orbit about the LMC is better described as quasi-periodic rather than circular. Binary L/SMC orbits that satisfy observational constraints on their mutual interaction history (e.g., the formation of the Magellanic Bridge during a collision between the Clouds ~300 Myr ago) can be located within 1σ of the mean PMs. However, these binary orbits are not co-located with the Magellanic Stream (MS) when projected on the plane of the sky and the line-of-sight velocity gradient along the LMC's orbit is significantly steeper than that along the MS. These combined results ultimately rule out a purely tidal origin for the MS: tides are ineffective without multiple pericentric passages and can neither decrease the velocity gradient nor explain the offset stream in a polar orbit configuration. Alternatively, ram pressure stripping of an extended gaseous disk may naturally explain the deviation. The offset also suggests that observations of the little-explored region between RA 21h and 23h are crucial for characterizing the full extent of the MS.

I discuss the following five selected topics on formation and evolution of the LMC and the SMC based on fully self-consistent chemodynamical simulations of the Magellanic Clouds (MCs): (1) formation of bifurcated gaseous structures and young stars in the Magellanic bridge (MB), (2) formation of the Magellanic stream (MS) due to the tidal interaction between the LMC, the SMC, and the Galaxy within the last 2 Gyrs, (3) origin of the observed kinematical differences between H i gas and stars in the SMC, (4) formation of stellar structures dependent on their ages and metallicities in the LMC, and (5) a new common halo model explaining both the latest HST ACS observations on the proper motions of the LMC and the SMC and the presence of the MS in the Galactic halo. I focus exclusively on the latest developments in numerical simulations on formation and evolution of the Magellanic system.

I use high resolution N-body/SPH simulations to model the new proper motion of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) within the Milky Way (MW) halo and investigate the effects of gravitational and hydrodynamical forces on the formation of the Magellanic Stream (MS). Both the LMC and the MW are fully self consistent galaxy models embedded in extended cuspy ΛCDM dark matter halos. I find that ram-pressure from a low density ionized halo is sufficient to remove a large amount of gas from the LMC's disk forming a trailing Stream that extends more than 120 degrees from the Cloud. Tidal forces elongate the satellite's disk but do not affect its vertical structure. No stars become unbound showing that tidal stripping is almost effectless.

We present evidence that the accretion of warm gas onto the Galaxy today is at least as important as cold gas accretion. For more than a decade, the source of the bright Hα emission (up to 750 mR†) along the Magellanic Stream has remained a mystery. We present a hydrodynamical model that explains the known properties of the Hα emission and provides new insights on the lifetime of the Stream clouds. The upstream clouds are gradually disrupted due to their interaction with the hot halo gas. The clouds that follow plough into gas ablated from the upstream clouds, leading to shock ionisation at the leading edges of the downstream clouds. Since the following clouds also experience ablation, and weaker Hα (100–200 mR) is quite extensive, a disruptive cascade must be operating along much of the Stream. In order to light up much of the Stream as observed, it must have a small angle of attack (≈ 20°) to the halo, and this may already find support in new H i observations. Another prediction is that the Balmer ratio (Hα/Hβ) will be substantially enhanced due to the slow shock; this will soon be tested by upcoming WHAM observations in Chile. We find that the clouds are evolving on timescales of 100–200 Myr, such that the Stream must be replenished by the Magellanic Clouds at a fairly constant rate (≳ 0.1 M⊙ yr−1). The ablated material falls onto the Galaxy as a warm drizzle; diffuse ionized gas at 104 K is an important constituent of galactic accretion. The observed Hα emission provides a new constraint on the rate of disruption of the Stream and, consequently, the infall rate of metal-poor gas onto the Galaxy. When the ionized component of the infalling gas is accounted for, the rate of gas accretion is ≳ 0.4 M⊙ yr−1, roughly twice the rate deduced from H i observations alone.

As a part of the ongoing H i survey by the consortium for Galactic studies with the Arecibo L-band Feed Array (GALFA-HI), we have recently imaged the tip of the MS and found several long filamentary structures. This demonstrates that the northern portion of the MS, which has been interacting with the Galactic halo for a long time, is more extended than previously thought and in the form of highly organized H i structures. The observed filaments, and especially the kinematic dichotomy of H i clouds observed for the first time, agree with predictions by the Connors, Kawata & Gibson (2006) tidal model. However, specific time-stamps in the history of the Magellanic System are required to explain these phenomena. The 20-degree long filaments are accompanied by a large population of small H i clouds. We investigate the observed properties of these clouds and explore various instabilities that affect a warm tail of gas trailing through the Galactic halo. Interestingly, if the observed H i structure is mainly due to thermal instability, then the tip of the MS is at a distance of ~70 kpc.

The Magellanic Clouds are important templates for studying the role interstellar dust plays as actor and tracer of galaxy evolution. Due to their proximity, the Large and Small Magellanic clouds are uniquely suited to put detailed Galactic dust studies in a global context. With a metal abundance lower than that of the Sun, the Magellanic Clouds also permit to characterize interstellar matter composition and structure as a function of metallicity. The presentation of spectacular results from the AKARI and Spitzer surveys was one of the highlights of this Magellanic Clouds meeting. This paper puts these results in context. I discuss UV extinction and IR emission signatures of carbon and silicate dust. I present diverse evidence of dust processing in the ISM. I illustrate the correlation between the mm emission of dust, and gas column density using Milky Way surveys. I conclude with three main results. Dust in the SMC is not carbon poor. The composition of interstellar dust reflects its processing in interstellar space and thereby depends on local conditions and its past history. In the Magellanic Clouds, far-IR and sub-mm observations are indicating that there may be significantly more cold interstellar matter, cold H i and H2 gas, than estimated from H i and CO observations.
