A novel Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) based ‘Turn-ON’ biosensor has been developed using fluorescent ZnO/APTMS-FITC (ZFA) nanoflakes as sensing probe. In this biosensor, Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) is used for the detection of L-lactate, a diagnostic marker for abnormal physiological conditions like muscular dystrophy, myocardial infraction, abnormal tissue formation and tissue damage. Lactate Dehydrogeanse (LDH) catalyses the conversion of L-Lactate to L-Pyruvate, in presence of β-NAD reducing to β-NADH. We tried to explore this mechanism with FRET based system for highly sensitive detection of L-Lactate. The fluorescence of these nanoflakes can be reversibly quenched in the presence of β-NAD.

Size control of copper fine particles is highly important for their application for conductive materials. In this study, easy size tuning of the copper fine particles coated by n-hexylamine was achieved via controlling the ratio of n-hexylamine and the precursor CuO. The obtained particles were stable and had a hydrophobic surface. TG-DTA measurement revealed the formation of thin layer of n-hexylamine on the particles.

In this study, silver, zinc and copper nanoparticles, AgNPs, ZnNPs and CuNPs, were tested on photodegradation using phenol as a model contaminant. The nanoparticles were phytosynthesized from an aqueous extract of Eichhornia crassipes leaves, and were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, EDS (Dispersive Energy X-ray Spectroscopy), SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy), and TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy). The AgNPs, ZnNPs and CuNPs showed a characteristic plasmon determined by UV-Vis; in the case of the EDS analyses Ag, Zn and Cu were detected as the main components. The detected composition by TEM corresponded to a metallic oxide for the three nanoparticles. Finally, for the photocatalytic performance on the phenol degradation under UV radiation, they showed about 50%, 52% and 34% with a 10 mg/L phenol solution that was achieved within 200 min using AgNPs, ZnNPs and CuNPs, respectively.

Aqueous auto-dispersing polyurethane dispersions (PUDs) have recently been reported to form nanoparticulate dispersions at up to 25% by weight. Their incorporation of an ionic-liquid (IL) monomer, 1-hydroxyundecyl-3-methyl imidazolium bromide (HOC11C1ImBr) as a chain-terminating group appears to account for their auto-dispersing ability, and these PUD nanoparticles bear similarity to IL-based nanolatexes that have provided thermodynamically stable aqueous dispersions of nanocarbons. We demonstrate that these HOC11C1ImBr-based PUDs stabilize aqueous graphene dispersions at 1% by weight graphene in ultrasonicated top-down liquid phase exfoliation. Their formation quantitatively follows an analytical model of exfoliation kinetics of layered materials and a stretched exponential kinetic model. Such dispersions are ideally formulated for making nanocomposites composed of similar or compatible PUDs and other condensation polymers.

Chainmail fabrics manufactured by selective laser sintering 3D printing have been magnetically functionalized to create a lightweight, 4D printed, actuating fabric. The post-processing method involves submerging the porous prints in commercial ferrofluid (oil-based magnetic liquid), followed by drying under heat. The actuation of the chainmail has been simulated using a rigid multi-body physics engine, and qualitatively matches experiment. Such magnetically actuating fabrics have potential to make thin, lightweight and comfortable wearable assistive devices.

In this work, the evaluation of the growth of cracks in specimens of square cross section requested by symmetrical cyclic torsion moments was performed. The specimens were manufactured from AISI 1015. A pre-crack was machined on one side to induce the crack growth. The crack length with the increase in the number of cycles was measured by means of penetrating liquids method. By means of the Finite Element Method, the stress – strain state of the specimens was simulated. The displacements in the crack tip were determined to apply the technique of the Crack Tip Opening Displacements to calculate the Stress Intensity Factor. The calculated Stress Intensity Factor was related to the dimensions of the specimen and the size of the crack to propose an equation for the shape function.

An old procedure used to carry out a graphical derivation of curves, which is based on the optical properties of plane mirrors, has been adapted for the measurement of the contact angle (θ) formed between a liquid drop and a flat solid substrate in wettability experiments carried out by the so-called “sessile drop” method. The method was tested for mercury on soda-lime glass at room temperature in air as well as for Cusil (Ag-28wt.%Cu) and Incusil-ABA (Ag-27wt.%Cu-12wt.%In-2wt.%Ti) brazing alloys on pressureless-sintered silicon carbide (PLS-SiC) at 850 °C, under a vacuum of 10-4/10-5 Torr. The proposed method is fast, simple and accurate enough from high (∼140°) to relatively low (∼10°) contact angles. Although the proposed method has been tested for metal-ceramic systems, it is of general application, so that it would be useful for any liquid-solid system. The method is applicable for any temperature, pressure and atmospheric experimental conditions employed, as well as for any chemical composition of liquid and solid. It is also useful for both low and high contact angles, as well as for reactive and non-reactive systems, as long as a photograph of a liquid drop resting on a flat solid surface is available for the studied system.

The microstructure homogeneity and variability in mechanical properties of 316L stainless steel components fabricated using selective laser melting (SLM) have been investigated. The crack free, 99.9% dense samples were made starting from SS316L alloy powder, and the melt pool morphology was analysed using optical and scanning electron microscopy. Extremely fast cooling rates after laser melting/solidification process, accompanied by slow diffusion of alloying elements, produced characteristic microstructures with colonies of cellular substructure inside grains, grown along the direction of the principal thermal gradient during laser scanning. In some areas of the microstructure, a significant number of precipitates were observed inside grains and at grain boundaries. Micro hardness measurements along the build direction revealed slight but gradual increase in hardness along the sample height. Uniaxial tensile tests of as manufactured samples showed the effect of un-melted areas causing scatter in room-temperature mechanical properties of samples extracted from the same SLM build. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) varied from 458MPa to 509MPa along with a variation in uniform elongation from 3.3% to 14.4%. The UTS of a sample exposed to the Cl- rich corrosion environment at 46oC temperature revealed a similar strength as of the original sample, indicating good corrosion resistance of SLM samples under those corrosion conditions.

Molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) is one of the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) materials which has attracted attention due to its various interesting properties. MoS2 is very promising for electronic and optoelectronic devices due to its indirect band gap (∼1.2 eV) for few layer and direct band gap (∼1.8 eV) for monolayer MoS2. In MoS2 based Schottky devices, Schottky barrier height depends on the thickness of MoS2 because of its tunable electronic properties. Here, we have used DC sputtering technique to fabricate metal-semiconductor junction of MoS2 with platinum (Pt) metal contacts. In this work, MoS2 thin film (∼10 nm) was deposited on p-Silicon (111) using DC sputtering technique at optimized parameters. Schottky metallization of Pt metal (contact area ∼ 0.785x10-2 cm2) was also done using DC sputtering. Current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of the Pt/MoS2 Schottky junction have been investigated in the temperature range 80-350K. Forward I-V characteristics of Pt/MoS2 junction are analysed to calculate different Schottky parameters. Schottky barrier height increases and ideality factor decreases on increasing the temperature from 80-350K. The I-V-T measurements suggest the presence of local inhomogeneities at the Pt/MoS2 junction. Schottky barrier inhomogeneities occur in case of rough interface. In such cases, the Schottky barrier height does not remain constant and vary locally. Current transport through the Schottky junction is a thermally activated process. As temperature increases, more and more electrons overcome the spatially inhomogeneous barrier height. As a result, the ideality factor becomes close to unity and apparent barrier height increases due to increase in temperature.

Embolic beads for transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) should possess radiopacity and biodegradability at the same time, to be visualized in a body under fluoroscopy and CT scanning to avoid complicating disease. In this study, we fabricated radiopaque and biodegradable beads composed of Lipiodol (LPD) (ethiodized oil) and polycaprolactone (PCL), a biocompatible and biodegradable polymer. LPD/PCL beads were first fabricated with a home-made microfluidic device. By changing the flow-rate ratio in the microfluidic device, the mean diameter of LPD/PCL beads could be well controlled. The radiopacity was evaluated by the fluoroscopic imaging and the CT number measurements. Furthermore, the biodegradability was evaluated by collecting the weight loss data of LPD/PCL immersed in lipase/PBS solution and PBS. The results showed that LPD/PCL beads obtained in this study had sufficient radiopacity and biodegradability, which would be an alternative embolic agent for TACE.

Hybrid organic-inorganic semiconducting interfaces have attracted attention in photodiodes and field-effect transistors (FETs) due to the realization of intrinsic p-n junctions and their mechanical flexibility. With the difficulty of developing high-mobility n-type organic semiconductors due to the necessity of low LUMO levels and ambient environment stability, solution processable inorganic materials are an excellent alternative. ZnO is an intrinsic n-type semiconductor which is non-toxic and sol-gel processable, creating avenues for film patterning and fully solution processed devices. We report the improvement of electron mobilities in ZnO FETs through simple UV-Ozone processing which reduces lattice defects within the film and at the SiO2/ZnO interface. Treated ZnO films yield electron mobilities close to 10-2 cm2/Vs and on/off current ratios of 104 while non-treated films have mobilities on the order of 10-5 cm2/Vs and an order of magnitude lower on/off current ratios. Treated films also yield improved photoresponsivity and detectivity in hybrid ZnO-organic photodetectors.

Thermal conductivity of a nickel-coated tri-wall carbon nanotube was studied using molecular dynamics where both the phonon and electron contributions were considered. Simulations predicted a significant effect of the metal coating on the thermal conductivity, i.e. 50% decrease for 1.2 nm of Ni coating. However, the decreasing rate of the thermal conductivity is minuscule for the metal thicker than 1.6 nm. The smaller thermal conductivity of the metal coating, phonon scattering at the interface, and less impacted heat transfer on the inner tubes of the carbon nanotube rationalized the observed trends.

In this study, non-cadmium-based quantum dots were synthesized and used as catalysts for the photochemical reduction of bicarbonate to value-added formic acid. Three types of quantum dots (CuS, CuInS2, and CuInS2/ZnS) were chosen because of they feature environmentally benign properties, possess wide optical absorption, and exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity. All three photocatalysts exhibited excellent efficiency in the photo-reduction of bicarbonate to formic acid, with CuInS2/ZnS showing the highest photon to formate conversion efficiency of 6.07 ± 0.07%. We attribute these exceptional results to their smaller bandgap leading to enhanced visible light absorption and the application of an appropriate hole scavenger that prolongs photo-generated charge carrier separation. To the best of our knowledge, the application of quantum dots in photocatalysis is still quite limited; this report describes the highest apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) to date.

Sparsely distributed and self-organized gold-nanocones are fabricated by broad argon ion beam sputtering on the gold surface with grazing incident angle. The rotation of the sample with respect to the vertical axis has found to influence the morphology of the obtained nanostructures. Ion beam irradiation of the sample leads to formation of nanoripples when the sample is held stationary, otherwise nanocones are formed if the sample is rotated during irradiation. A hybrid gold-nanocone/graphene/gold-nanohole based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor is proposed and shown to exhibit an enhancement factor of 109 via finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations.

The energy density of electrodeposition reactions makes them attractive for energy storage. Although its scientific inquiries nearly date back to the inception of electrochemistry, its behavior at microscopic dimensions (relevant to battery application) is mysteriously uncontrollable. We examine experimental reports of singular spatiotemporal evolutions with a hope to identify universality in deposition patterns. We conclude that a macroscopic mass transport instability cannot account for various growth morphologies and alludes to poorly understood materials interplay at smaller scales. We summarize representative characteristics of electrodeposition to encourage mechanistic investigations.

Disordered iron oxide thin-films synthesized from grain-oriented iron foils were grown on both glass and Si (100) n-type substrates by vacuum evaporation followed by thermal oxidation at low temperatures. Defects such as vacancies formation has been studied using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Raman Spectroscopy. The kinetic of oxidation as a function of surface parameters was investigated by AFM studies. The vibrational modes (bands) connected with the vacancies formation and magnetic ordering into the iron oxide structure were validated by Raman spectroscopy. Space-charge effects can be influenced by discontinuous growth of iron oxide and correlated with their structure parameters. Finally, the disordered iron oxide will be useful for the next generation of adaptive oxide devices.
