We prove that every finitely-generated right-angled Artin group embeds into some Brin–Thompson group nV. It follows that any virtually special group can be embedded into some nV, a class that includes surface groups, all finitely-generated Coxeter groups, and many one-ended hyperbolic groups.

For each of the groups G = O(2), SU(2), U(2), we compute the integral and $\mathbb{F}_2$-cohomology rings of BcomG (the classifying space for commutativity of G), the action of the Steenrod algebra on the mod 2 cohomology, the homotopy type of EcomG (the homotopy fiber of the inclusion BcomG → BG), and some low-dimensional homotopy groups of BcomG.

A multiset consists of elements, but the notion of a multiset is distinguished from that of a set by carrying information of how many times each element occurs in a given multiset. In this work we will investigate the notion of iterative multisets, where multisets are iteratively built up from other multisets, in the context Martin–Löf Type Theory, in the presence of Voevodsky’s Univalence Axiom.

In his 1978 paper, “the type theoretic interpretation of constructive set theory” Aczel introduced a model of constructive set theory in type theory, using a W-type quantifying over a universe, and an inductively defined equivalence relation on it. Our investigation takes this W-type and instead considers the identity type on it, which can be computed from the univalence axiom. Our thesis is that this gives a model of multisets. In order to demonstrate this, we adapt axioms of constructive set theory to multisets, and show that they hold for our model.

In this we exploit the arithmeticity criterion of Oh and Benoist–Miquel to exhibit an origami in the principal stratum of the moduli space of translation surfaces of genus three whose Kontsevich–Zorich monodromy is not thin in the sense of Sarnak.

The symmetric group on a set acts transitively on the set of its subsets of a fixed size. We define homomorphisms between the corresponding permutation modules, defined over a field of characteristic two, which generalize the boundary maps from simplicial homology. The main results determine when these chain complexes are exact and when they are split exact. As a corollary we obtain a new explicit construction of the basic spin modules for the symmetric group.

We study generating functions of ordinary and plane partitions coloured by the action of a finite subgroup of the corresponding special linear group. After reviewing known results for the case of ordinary partitions, we formulate a conjecture concerning a basic factorisation property of the generating function of coloured plane partitions that can be thought of as an orbifold analogue of a conjecture of Maulik et al., now a theorem, in three-dimensional Donaldson–Thomas theory. We study natural quantisations of the generating functions arising from geometry, discuss a quantised version of our conjecture, and prove a positivity result for the quantised coloured plane partition function under a geometric assumption.

Let X be a monoid scheme. We will show that the stalk at any point of X defines a point of the topos of quasi-coherent sheaves over X. As it turns out, every topos point of is of this form if X satisfies some finiteness conditions. In particular, it suffices for M/M× to be finitely generated when X is affine, where M× is the group of invertible elements.

This allows us to prove that two quasi-projective monoid schemes X and Y are isomorphic if and only if and are equivalent.

The finiteness conditions are essential, as one can already conclude by the work of A. Connes and C. Consani [3]. We will study the topos points of free commutative monoids and show that already for ℕ∞, there are ‘hidden’ points. That is to say, there are topos points which are not coming from prime ideals. This observation reveals that there might be a more interesting ‘geometry of monoids’.

We study C1-robustly transitive and nonhyperbolic diffeomorphisms having a partially hyperbolic splitting with one-dimensional central bundle whose strong un-/stable foliations are both minimal. In dimension 3, an important class of examples of such systems is given by those with a simple closed periodic curve tangent to the central bundle. We prove that there is a C1-open and dense subset of such diffeomorphisms such that every nonhyperbolic ergodic measure (i.e. with zero central exponent) can be approximated in the weak* topology and in entropy by measures supported in basic sets with positive (negative) central Lyapunov exponent. Our method also allows to show how entropy changes across measures with central Lyapunov exponent close to zero. We also prove that any nonhyperbolic ergodic measure is in the intersection of the convex hulls of the measures with positive central exponent and with negative central exponent.

We take an elementary and systematic approach to the problem of extending the Tutte polynomial to the setting of embedded graphs. Four notions of embedded graphs arise naturally when considering deletion and contraction operations on graphs on surfaces. We give a description of each class in terms of coloured ribbon graphs. We then identify a universal deletion-contraction invariant (i.e., a ‘Tutte polynomial’) for each class. We relate these to graph polynomials in the literature, including the Bollobás–Riordan, Krushkal and Las Vergnas polynomials, and give state-sum formulations, duality relations, deleton-contraction relations, and quasi-tree expansions for each of them.

We consider random walks on the mapping class group that have finite first moment with respect to the word metric, whose support generates a non-elementary subgroup and contains a pseudo-Anosov map whose invariant Teichmüller geodesic is in the principal stratum of quadratic differentials. We show that a Teichmüller geodesic typical with respect to the harmonic measure for such random walks, is recurrent to the thick part of the principal stratum. As a consequence, the vertical foliation of such a random Teichmüller geodesic has no saddle connections.

We study the average error term in the usual approximation to the number of y-friable integers congruent to a modulo q, where a ≠ 0 is a fixed integer. We show that in the range exp{(log log x)5/3+ɛ} ⩽ y ⩽ x and on average over q ⩽ x/M with M → ∞ of moderate size, this average error term is asymptotic to −|a| Ψ(x/|a|, y)/2x. Previous results of this sort were obtained by the second author for reasonably dense sequences, however the sequence of y-friable integers studied in the current paper is thin, and required the use of different techniques, which are specific to friable integers.

Given a positive integer n let ω (n) denote the number of distinct prime factors of n, and let a be fixed positive integer. Extending work of Kubilius, we develop a bivariate probabilistic model to study the joint distribution of the deterministic vectors (ω(n), ω(n + a)), with n ≤ x as x → ∞, where n and n + a belong to a subset of ℕ with suitable properties. We thus establish a quantitative version of a bivariate analogue of the Erdős–Kac theorem on proper subsets of ℕ.

We give three applications of this result. First, if y = x0(1) is not too small then we prove (in a quantitative way) that the y-truncated Möbius function μy has small binary autocorrelations. This gives a new proof of a result due to Daboussi and Sarkőzy. Second, if μ(n; u) :=e(uω(n)), where u ∈ ℝ then we show that μ(.; u) also has small binary autocorrelations whenever u = o(1) and $u\sqrt {\mathop {\log }\nolimits_2 x} \to \infty$, as x → ∞. These can be viewed as partial results in the direction of a conjecture of Chowla on binary correlations of the Möbius function.

Our final application is related to a problem of Erdős and Mirsky on the number of consecutive integers less than x with the same number of divisors. If $y = x^{{1 \over \beta }}$, where β = β(x) satisfies certain mild growth conditions, we prove a lower bound for the number of consecutive integers n ≤ x that have the same number of y-smooth divisors. Our bound matches the order of magnitude of the one conjectured for the original Erdős-Mirsky problem.

We discuss the generalizations of the concept of Chebyshev’s bias from two perspectives. First, we give a general framework for the study of prime number races and Chebyshev’s bias attached to general L-functions satisfying natural analytic hypotheses. This extends the cases previously considered by several authors and involving, among others, Dirichlet L-functions and Hasse–Weil L-functions of elliptic curves over Q. This also applies to new Chebyshev’s bias phenomena that were beyond the reach of the previously known cases. In addition, we weaken the required hypotheses such as GRH or linear independence properties of zeros of L-functions. In particular, we establish the existence of the logarithmic density of the set $ \{x \ge 2:\sum\nolimits_{p \le x} {\lambda _f}(p) \ge 0\}$ for coefficients (λf(p)) of general L-functions conditionally on a much weaker hypothesis than was previously known.

Let ℳ be a semifinite von Neumann algebra with a faithful semifinite normal trace τ. Assume that E(0, ∞) is an M-embedded fully symmetric function space having order continuous norm and is not a superset of the set of all bounded vanishing functions on (0, ∞). In this paper, we prove that the corresponding operator space E(ℳ, τ) is also M-embedded. It extends earlier results by Werner [48, Proposition 4∙1] from the particular case of symmetric ideals of bounded operators on a separable Hilbert space to the case of symmetric spaces (consisting of possibly unbounded operators) on an arbitrary semifinite von Neumann algebra. Several applications are given, e.g., the derivation problem for noncommutative Lorentz spaces ℒp,1(ℳ, τ), 1 < p < ∞, has a positive answer.

We establish the general form of a geometric comparison principle for n-fold convolutions of certain singular measures in ℝd which holds for arbitrary n and d. This translates into a pointwise inequality between the convolutions of projection measure on the paraboloid and a perturbation thereof, and we use it to establish a new sharp Fourier extension inequality on a general convex perturbation of a parabola. Further applications of the comparison principle to sharp Fourier restriction theory are discussed in the companion paper [3].

We define a metric filtration of the Gordian graph by an infinite family of 1-dense subgraphs. The nth subgraph of this family is generated by all knots whose fundamental groups surject to a symmetric group with parameter at least n, where all meridians are mapped to transpositions. Incidentally, we verify the Meridional Rank Conjecture for a family of knots with unknotting number one yet arbitrarily high bridge number.

Our main point of focus is the set of closed geodesics on hyperbolic surfaces. For any fixed integer k, we are interested in the set of all closed geodesics with at least k (but possibly more) self-intersections. Among these, we consider those of minimal length and investigate their self-intersection numbers. We prove that their intersection numbers are upper bounded by a universal linear function in k (which holds for any hyperbolic surface). Moreover, in the presence of cusps, we get bounds which imply that the self-intersection numbers behave asymptotically like k for growing k.

The conjecture of Brown, Erdős and Sós from 1973 states that, for any k ≥ 3, if a 3-uniform hypergraph H with n vertices does not contain a set of k +3 vertices spanning at least k edges then it has o(n2) edges. The case k = 3 of this conjecture is the celebrated (6, 3)-theorem of Ruzsa and Szemerédi which implies Roth’s theorem on 3-term arithmetic progressions in dense sets of integers. Solymosi observed that, in order to prove the conjecture, one can assume that H consists of triples (a, b, ab) of some finite quasigroup Γ. Since this problem remains open for all k ≥ 4, he further proposed to study triple systems coming from finite groups. In this case he proved that the conjecture holds also for k = 4. Here we completely resolve the Brown–Erdős–Sós conjecture for all finite groups and values of k. Moreover, we prove that the hypergraphs coming from groups contain sets of size $\Theta (\sqrt k )$ which span k edges. This is best possible and goes far beyond the conjecture.

This paper is concerned with support theorems of the X-ray transform on non-compact manifolds with conjugate points. In particular, we prove that all simply connected 2-step nilpotent Lie groups have a support theorem. Important ingredients of the proof are the concept of plane covers and a support theorem for simple manifolds by Krishnan. We also provide examples of non-homogeneous 3-dimensional simply connected manifolds with conjugate points which have support theorems.

We show that provided that n is a power of two, any nD measures in ℝn can be bisected by an arrangement of D hyperplanes.
