For X a subset of a group G, the smallest normal subgroup of G which contains X is called the normal closure of X and is denoted by ngp (X; G) or simply by ngp (X) if there is no possibility of ambiguity. By a surface group we mean the fundamental group of a compact surface. We are interested in determining when a normal subgroup of a surface group contains a simple loop – the homotopy class of an embedding of S1 in the surface, or more generally, a power of a simple loop. This is significant to the study of 3-manifolds since a Heegaard splitting of a 3-manifold is reducible (cf. [2]) if and only if the kernel of the corresponding splitting homomorphism contains a simple loop. We give an answer in the case that the normal subgroup is the normal closure ngp (α) of a single element α: if ngp (α) contains a (power of a) simple loop β then α is homotopic to a (power of a) simple loop and β±1 is homotopic either to (a power of) α or to the commutator [α, γ] of a with some simple loop γ meeting a transversely in a single point. This implies that if a is not homotopic to a power of a simple loop, then the quotient map π1(S) → π1(S)/ngp (α) does not factor through a group with more than one end. In the process we show that π1(S)/ngp (α) is locally indicable if and only if α is not a proper power and that α always lifts to a simple loop in the covering space Sα of S corresponding to ngp (α). We also obtain some estimates on the minimal number of double points in certain homotopy classes of loops.

We define the homotopy skein module of an arbitrary orientable 3-manifold M. This module is similar to the ordinary skein module defined by the second author but is more appropriate when considering oriented links in M up to link homotopy rather than isotopy. We compute the homotopy skein module of M = F × I for any orientable surface F and show that it is free. In the case where M = F × I the homotopy skein module may be given an algebra structure and we show that as an algebra it is isomorphic to the universal enveloping algebra of the Goldman–Wolpert Lie algebra of F. We show, also in this case, that the homotopy skein module is a quantization of the symmetric tensor algebra associated to the Goldman–Wolpert Lie algebra.

The main aim of this paper is to study the role of the assumptions in the following

Theorem 0. Every ideal I of codimension 1 in an F-lattice X is closed†.

For X a Banach lattice this result appears in [11], ii.5·3, corollary 3. The proof carries over to the case where X is an. F-lattice, i.e. a topological linear lattice the topology of which is metrizable and complete, with the help of a result due to Klee ([10], theorem v.5·5; see also [3], theorem 16·6). We first note that the assumption of metric completeness is essential (Example 2). We then extend Theorem 0 to the case of ideals of finite codimension (Theorem 1), and show that non-closed ideals exist whenever X is infinite-dimensional (Corollary 2). Our main result commenting on Theorem 0 is, however, the existence of dense sublattices of arbitrary codimension between 1 and in every infinite-dimensional F-lattice (Theorem 6).

This paper is intended to make explicit some aspects of the interactions which have recently come to light between the theory of classical knots and links, the theory of monoidal categories, Hopf-algebra theory, quantum integrable systems, the theory of exactly solvable models in statistical mechanics, and quantum field theories. The main results herein show an intimate relation between representations of certain monoidal categories arising from the study of new knot invariants or from physical considerations and quantum groups (that is, Hopf algebras). In particular categories of modules and comodules over Hopf algebras would seem to be much more fundamental examples of monoidal categories than might at first be apparent. This fundamental role of Hopf algebras in monoidal categories theory is also manifest in the Tannaka duality theory of Deligne and Mime [8a], although the relationship of that result and the present work is less clear than might be hoped.

There exist naturally occurring enzymes (topoisomerases and recombinases), which, in order to mediate the vital life processes of replication, transcription, and recombination, manipulate cellular DNA in topologically interesting and non-trivial ways [24, 30]. These enzyme actions include promoting the coiling up (supercoiling) of DNA molecules, passing one strand of DNA through another via a transient enzyme-bridged break in one of the strands (a move performed by topoisomerase), and breaking a pair of strands and recombining them to different ends (a move performed by recombinase). An interesting development for topology has been the emergence of a new experimental protocol, the topological approach to enzymology [30], which directly exploits knot theory in an effort to understand enzyme action. In this protocol, one reacts artificial circular DNA substrate with purified enzyme in vitro (in the laboratory); the enzyme acts on the circular DNA, causing changes in both the euclidean geometry (supercoiling) of the molecules and in the topology (knotting and linking) of the molecules. These enzyme-caused changes are experimental observables, using gel electrophoresis to fractionate the reaction products, and rec A enhanced electron microscopy [15] to visualize directly and to determine unambiguously the DNA knots and links which result as products of an enzyme reaction. This experimental technique calls for the building of knot-theoretic models for enzyme action, in which one wishes mathematically to extract information about enzyme mechanism from the observed changes in the DNA molecules.

This article deals with several related questions in harmonic analysis which are well understood for non-degenerate curves in ℝn, but poorly understood in the degenerate case. These questions invariably involve a positive ‘reference’ measure on the curve. In the non-degenerate case the choice of measure is not particularly critical and it is usually taken to be the Euclidean arclength measure. Since the questions considered here are invariant under the group of affine motions (of determinant 1), the correct choice of reference measure is the affine arclength measure. We refer the reader to Guggenheimer [8] for information on affine geometry. When the curve has degeneracies, the choice of measure becomes critical and it is the affine arclength measure which yields the most powerful results. From the Euclidean point of view the affine arclength measure has correspondingly little mass near the degeneracies and thus compensates automatically for the poor behaviour there. This principle should also be valid for general submanifolds of ℝn but alas the affine geometry of submanifolds is itself not well understood in general.

Let us denote the group of based homotopy classes of seif-homotopy equivalences of a space X by E(X). We consider E0(X), the subgroup of E(X) consisting of elements which induce the identity map on homology. Dror and Zabrodsky have shown that E0(X) and the subgroup E#(X) consisting of elements inducing the identity on homotopy are both nilpotent groups for finite-dimensional nilpotent spaces, or finite-dimensional spaces respectively ([4], theorem D, theorem A). The theory of localization for nilpotent groups has been developed by several authors (see [8]). The aim of this paper is to prove the following theorem. The corresponding result for E#(X) is obtained in [9], theorem 0·1.

Let F be a closed connected and non-orientable surface smoothly embedded in the 4-sphere S4 with normal Euler number e(F) = 0. We note that if e(F) = 0, then the non-orientable genus n is even (ef. [7]) and the tubular neighbourhood N(F) of F in S4 which is a D2-bundle over F has a trivial I-subbundle. Let τ be a trivial I-subbundle of N(F) and let τ* = F × I ⊂ N(F) be its orthogonal I-subbundle which is twisted. Then is a closed connected genus n – 1 orientable surface smoothly embedded in S4 and doubly covers F. We call this surface a doubled surface of F in S4 (associated with τ). If a trivial I-subbundle τ is given, then we see that the knot type of F* ⊂ S4 is uniquely determined.

For 0 < α < 1, let for 0 ≤ x < 1, where is the sequence of Rademacher functions. We give a class of fα so that their graphs have Hausdorff dimension 2 − α. The result is closely related to the corresponding unsolved question for the Weierstrass functions.

Let K be a field with char if K≠2 and let Ks denote the separable closure of K and GK the Galois group of the extension Ks/K. In the paper [3] we obtained a lower bound for the Hausdorff dimension of certain sets of singular n-tuples in ℝn. In this paper we will obtain an upper bound for the dimension of these sets. These two bounds are not sharp enough to yield the exact dimension of all the sets considered but they do yield the dimension of the set of ‘highly singular’ (in a sense to be made precise below) n-tuples.

Let X and Y be Banach spaces. Then Kw*(X*, Y) denotes the Banach space of compact and weak*-weakly continuous linear operators from X* into Y, endowed with the usual operator norm. Let us write E⊃l∞ to indicate that a Banach space E contains an isomorphic copy of l∞. The purpose of this note is to prove the following

Theorem. Kw*(X*, Y) ⊃ l∞if and only if either X ⊃ l∞or Y ⊃ l∞.

We prove that any periodic orbit O of a C1 orientation-preserving embedding f of the 2-disc D2 is linked with a fixed point P in the sense that the corresponding periodic orbits {Φt(O)}t ≥ 0 and {Φt(P)}t ≥ 0 of any torus flow Φt suspending f are linked as knots in S3.

In recent years, the Stone-Čech compactification of certain semigroups (e.g. discrete semigroups) has been an interesting semigroup compactification (i.e. a compact right semitopological semigroup which contains a dense continuous homomorphic image of the given semigroup) to study, because an Arens-type product can be introduced. If G is a non-compact and non-discrete locally compact abelian group, then it is not possible to introduce such a product into the Stone-Čech compactification βG of G (see [1]). However, let UC(G) be the Banach algebra of bounded uniformly continuous complex functions on G, and let UG be the spectrum of UC(G) with the Gelfand topology. If f∈ UC(G), then the functions f and fy defined on G by

are also in UC(G).

We consider a 2-dimensional square lattice which is partitioned into a periodic array of rectangular cells, on which a nearest neighbour random walk with symmetric increments is defined whose transition probabilities only depend on the relative position within a cell. On the basis of a determinantal identity proved in this paper, we obtain a result for finite Markov chains which shows that the diffusion constants for the random walk are monotonic functions of the individual transition probabilities. We point out the similarity of this monotonicity property to Rayleigh's Monotonicity Law for electric networks or, equivalently, reversible random walks.

We give some characterizations of the class of character-pure locally compact abelian groups. As an application we supplement a result of Venkataraman characterizing the class of locally compact abelian groups which are topologically pure in their Bohr compactifications. We also study the class of locally compact abelian groups which are pure closed in their Bohr compactifications.

Orthogonality is defined for all elements in a JB-algebra and Topping's results on annihilators in JW-algebras are generalized to the context of JB- and JBW-algebras. A pair (a, b) of elements in a JB-algebra A is said to be orthogonal provided that a2 ∘ b equals zero. It is shown that this relation is symmetric. The annihilator S⊥ of a subset S of A is defined to be the set of elements a in A such that, for all elements s in S, the pair (s, a) is orthogonal. It is shown that the annihilators are closed quadratic ideals and, if A is a JBW-algebra, a subset I of A is a w*-closed quadratic ideal if and only if I coincides with its biannihilator I⊥⊥. Moreover, in a JBW-algebra A the formation of the annihilator of a w*-closed quadratic ideal is an orthocomplementation on the complete lattice of w*-closed quadratic ideals which makes it into a complete orthomodular lattice. Further results establish a connection between ideals, central idempotents and annihilators in JBW-algebras.

The class of Toeplitz operators has attracted the attention of several mathematicians and plays an important part in operator theory and related fields. Here we have a special interest in connection with the theory of shift operators, Toeplitz operators, and Hardy classes of vector and operator valued functions as in [12].

In this paper, we develop an abstract formulation of a problem which arises in the investigation of the number of limit cycles of systems of the form

where p and q are homogeneous polynomials. This is part of the much wider study of Hilbert's sixteenth problem, in which information is sought about the number of limit cycles of systems of the form

where P and Q are polynomials, and their possible configurations.

A three-dimensional constitutive equation governing the flow of an isotropic rigid/perfectly plastic granular material is presented. The equation relates the strain-rate tensor to the Cauchy stress tensor and to the co-rotational rate of the Cauchy stress. It contains scalar functions of the scalar invariants involving the stress, stress-rate and strain-rate tensors together with parameters which characterize the material. The model generalizes the double-shearing model and its relationship to existing theories is demonstrated.
