Blue sharks (Prionace glauca) and oilfish (Ruvettus pretiosus) are frequently caught incidentally in the swordfish surface drifting longline fishery of the eastern Mediterranean Sea. An information theoretic generalized additive model approach, modelling separately: (1) the probability of making a catch; and (2) the positive catch rates, suggested the presence of intra-annual variations in their abundance and revealed interesting associations with some environmental features. Blue sharks were more frequently encountered during late summer in cool water masses. However, the likelihood of making a larger catch peaked in warmer waters through late spring in the vicinity of land. Occurrences of blue sharks were more frequent to the south-west (Ionian Sea), while positive catch rates were higher in the eastern-most regions (Levantine). Oilfish occurrences, as well as catch rates, were always above average to the east. Intra-annual variation was analogous to that of blue sharks. The species showed a preference for cooler water bodies and its distribution was strongly dictated by the lunar cycle. Annual time series showed a decreasing trend of blue sharks abundance. Catch rates for both species depended on fishing gear configuration. Deeper settings (>20 m), more resilient lines and use of fish attractant light-sticks increased the probability of capturing a fish.

Although the harbour seal (Phoca vitulina vitulina) is relatively common in coastal waters of the Republic of Ireland, it remains largely unstudied. Issues including potential interactions with coastal fisheries and the occurrence of phocine distemper virus outbreaks in 1988 and 2002 have highlighted the need to increase our knowledge of the ecology of these animals. The diet of harbour seals was investigated using a combination of approaches: hard-part analysis of scat contents and fatty-acid analysis. A total of 102 scat and 13 blubber samples were collected from two locations in Ireland and were analysed following standard methodologies. Results from scat analysis indicate that the seals are opportunistic, generalist feeders, and probably consume prey in relation to its availability. Eighteen prey species were identified, with sandeels (Ammodytidae spp.) constituting 55% of the prey items by number. Biomass of prey was reconstructed using otolith-length regression equations, with and without the application of digestion correction factors and sole (Solea solea) (16.1%), sandeels (15.2%), and Trisopterus species (12.4%) were found to be the most important species by weight. Rarefraction curves were used to determine prey species diversity on a sample site basis and we used accumulation curves to ascertain whether sampling was sufficient on a site basis. Sixty-four fatty acids were isolated from the blubber and analysis of the fatty-acid profiles revealed the possible influence of season, seal weight and sex on the seals' long-term diet. Some of the prey species recorded in the diet overlap with commercially and recreationally caught fish species in Ireland; however, there was little overlap with marketed size-ranges.

This paper develops models of the initial impact of marine aggregate extraction on a benthic assemblage. We predict the effect of dredging on species numbers and abundance assuming spatial randomness of individuals. We extend the model to allow for spatial clustering of individuals using a Matern process. Data from a controlled field experiment are used to develop a framework for estimating species reduction. This involves modelling the spatial pattern of individuals before dredging using a Matern process, the impact of dredging at an individual level, and the probability that a species is not seen in a post-dredging survey. The framework was used to estimate that, of the 41 species that were seen in a pre-dredging survey but not in a post-dredging survey, between 0 and 14 were eliminated (with 95% likelihood) rather than escaped detection. The most likely number eliminated was 4.

Ecological information on the polychaete community may improve habitat descriptions and distribution models of commercially important species that are polychaete-feeders. This study reports on the first new observations in nearly three decades on the polychaete assemblages in the south-eastern Bering Sea. This information was used in an exploratory assessment of the association between polychaete assemblages and environmental variables that define the benthic habitat. The spatial association between polychaete assemblages and groundfish predators was also explored for insight into whether prey assemblages influence predator distribution. Canonical correspondence analysis indicates that surficial sediment is the most important factor in organizing polychaete assemblages, over other common environmental variables such as depth and temperature. Co-correspondence analysis of the distributions of groundfish species and polychaete families does not indicate that predators are associated with specific prey families. Families that are most frequent in stomach contents of some of the fish in the analysis, mainly Maldanidae and Nephtyidae, are widely distributed across the Bering Sea shelf in diverse sediment types, as are the principal polychaete-feeders in the eastern Bering Sea such as Alaska plaice (Pleuronectes quadrituberculatus) and northern rock sole (Lepidopsetta polyxystra).

Age and growth of the clam Chamelea gallina from dredged, non-dredged and closed areas of the Turkish Black Sea coast were estimated. Von Bertalanffy growth curves were fitted for each sampling site; asymptotic length (L∞) values ranged between 25.995 and 28.883 mm and the growth coefficient (K) from 0.164 to 0.217 per year. Results indicate growth rates were significantly reduced in the far eastern commercial populations compared with those in western populations. According to our results presented here it can be concluded that C. gallina at closed area does not grow as fast as non-dredged stock and this is because of the shortness of closure season. Nevertheless we suggest that fallowing is the major precaution for the recovery of C. gallina stocks in the Black Sea.

Three new species belonging to the family Resomiidae (Siphonophora: Physonectae) are described from material mainly collected by ROVs in the vicinity of Monterey Bay, California, USA, with some additional submersible-collected specimens from The Bahamas. Although these species, Resomia ornicephala, R. persica, and R. dunni, show some differences from those previously described, particularly in the shape of the nectophores, they have all been placed in the genus Resomia. They retain the basic characteristic of having two forms of tentilla on the same tentacle, the more proximal form, with a spirally coiled cnidoband, becoming reconfigured into the more distal form, usually with a zigzagged cnidoband, although in one of the new species the zigzagging of the cnidoband is less well-defined.

Dynamics of Synechococcus (Syn), Prochlorococcus (Pro) and picoeukaryotes (Euk) was studied at 92 stations in the Pearl River Estuary and adjacent shelf waters in the winter of 2006 using flow cytometry. The average cell abundance of photosynthetic picoplankon (Pico) was 104 cells/ml. Picoeukaryotes was the dominant group in the inner estuary where Pro was absent. Synechococcus was dominant in the coastal and open waters. The proportion of Pro was higher in the open than in the coastal waters. The change of Pico community structure from the inner estuary to the open waters is related to the changes in hydrochemical dynamics. The vertical variations in the abundance and community composition of Pico were not significant. The abundances of Pro and Syn were positively correlated with temperature, salinity and pH, whereas they were negatively correlated with dissolved oxygen (DO), suspended sediment concentrations (SSC) and nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus and silicon) concentrations. But the correlations between %Euk (as of total pico) and these environmental factors were opposite to those between the abundance of prokaryotic cells (Pro and Syn) and the environmental factors. %Euk had significant negative correlations with temperature, salinity and pH, and positive correlations with DO, SSC and nutrients. There were differences in the niches between prokaryotic cells and picoeukaryotes. Prochlorococcus and Syn were dominant in the warm waters with high salinity, low SSC and low nutrient concentrations, while %Euk was higher in the cold waters with low salinity, high SSC and high nutrient concentrations. Results of principal component analysis and regression analysis indicated that the relationship between the abundances of Pico and the environmental factors was a compound function (y = b0(b1)x), and that between the abundances of Pro, Syn or %Euk and the environmental factors was a linear function.

Several Synalpheus species have been reported as hosts of bopyrid parasites; however, the impact of infestation on egg production is still unknown. Therefore, the present work studied reproductive aspects and the effect of parasitism on fecundity of the alpheid shrimp Synalpheus yano from Bocas del Toro, Caribbean coast of Panama. Un-infested females (N = 84) ranging from 3.7 to 9.6 mm carapace length, produced between 5 and 246 eggs (average: 98±64.6), and egg number increased significantly with female size. The eggs were relatively large (0.6–1.3 mm in diameter), but within the range of other Synalpheus species, and egg size did not differ significantly between un-infested and infested females. Despite these large eggs, the morphological characteristics of hatching larvae indicate a planktotrophic development. During the incubation period, the egg volume increased from 0.100 to 0.218 mm3, representing an overall increase of 118%. A total of 18 females (16% of all ovigerous individuals) were infested, and the occurrence of parasitic infestation was more pronounced in larger females. Infested females ranging from 4.6 to 9.4 mm carapace length, produced between 22 and 166 eggs (average: 81±44.4). Egg-bearing females infested by parasitic bopyrids carried on average 41% fewer eggs than similar-sized females without parasites. The co-occurrence of parasites and developing eggs, however, indicates that the bopyrid parasite does not necessarily castrate its host. Therefore, we encourage more comparative intraspecific studies on egg production in infested and un-infested females to assess the impact of infestation on fecundity in caridean shrimp.

Errina aspera is the only species belonging to the family Stylasteridae known from the Mediterranean Sea. The distribution of this species includes the Messina Strait, the Gibraltar Strait and the Atlantic coast of Morocco. In spite of the taxonomic and biogeographical importance of this species, no studies were conducted on its population structure in the Messina Strait. Here we report a study carried out with the aid of a ROV on a horizontal transect 350 m long at a depth comprised between 83 and 105 m where an extremely dense population of this stylasterid (101.4 ± 13.3 m−2) was recorded. The main components of the benthic community other than E. aspera are the coralline alga Lithothamnion philippii and the white zoanthid Epizoanthus sp. The colonies of E. aspera have a height ranging between 1.2 and 18.8 cm (4.1 ± 0.1 cm on average); they generally show a bi-dimensional, fan shaped morphology, but three-dimensional, brush-like specimens are also observed. The size–frequency distribution of the colony height is unimodal with a mode in the classes of 3–5 cm and a long tail of rare large colonies suggesting that the current may act as a limiting factor for the colony growth. The association with the gastropod ovulid Pedicularia sicula is confirmed.

The aim of this work is to describe the skeletal morphology of the early stages of the colonies of Stylaster sp., settled on artificial panels placed along a coral reef in the Bunaken Marine Park (North Sulawesi, Indonesia). The youngest observed stage deriving from the planula settlement is represented by a well developed primary cyclosystem symmetrically budding two secondary cyclosystems in a very early phase of growth. Successively each cyclosystem starts its vertical growth producing new cyclosystems sympodially arranged. At the same time the basal disc of the first cyclosystem enlarges producing a flattened crust from which new colonies arise. Vertical and encrusting forms are considered different modalities to face the problem of space competition in marine benthic organisms. The colonies of Stylaster sp. grow using both strategies resulting in the asexual reproduction of several colonies from a single settled planula. The new cyclosystems originate as small volcano-like elevations having the centre filled with calcium carbonate. Gradually this calcareous matrix dissolves starting from its perimetric zone and leads to the formation of the gastrostyle and the ring palisade. It is plausible that the cells composing the stolon nets deeply pervading the calcareous structure are responsible for this skeletal plasticity.

Hemigrapsus crenulatus is an abundant and frequent decapod crustacean inhabiting estuarine environments, where it must tolerate large shifts in salinity. The present study evaluates the effect of salinity (5, 13, 21 and 30 psu) on the adult physiological processes related to the energy balance. The growth potential (SFG) and the respired oxygen:excreted nitrogen ratio were used as indices of stress. Ingestion, excretion and respiration rates showed a significant dependence on salinity, being higher at low salinities. The assimilation efficiency remained constant along the studied salinity gradient. The assimilation and ingestion rates were inversely related with the salinity. Given this scenario, the growth potential remained constant within the studied salinity gradient, as did the oxygen:nitrogen ratio. The results suggest that the increased energy losses at low salinity due to respiration and excretion are compensated by an increment in the ingestion rate, contributing to the success of H. crenulatus in dynamic habitats such as estuaries.

In 1998, in coincidence with high sea surface temperatures, Maldivian reef corals were severely affected by mass mortality following bleaching. Tabular Acropora corals, formerly abundant in shallow water, were nearly exterminated. Recovery started soon, and in 2004 Maldivian reefs appeared rich in tabular Acropora colonies again, especially at some sites. This study aimed at determining the degree of spatial variability of tabular Acropora abundance and size among reef typologies (ocean versus lagoon reefs) and depth zones (4–6, 10–12 and 16–18 m) 6 years after the mass mortality event. A total of 192 tabular Acropora colonies (Ø > 16 cm) were counted and measured in six sites. Their abundance differed between reef typologies and according to depth zones, with the highest values in deep lagoon reefs. Colony mean size differed only among depth zones, the largest colonies (up to 105 cm) being found in shallow reefs. Assuming a radial extension rate of 10 cm · yr−1, colonies larger than 65 cm can be interpreted as the survivors of the mass mortality of 1998; conversely, they may represent the result of enhanced growth rates in uncrowded situations as those characterizing the coral reefs of the Maldives in 2004.

Sandy bottoms, with local patches of rocks, dominate the southern Baltic Sea coast. These rock patches create three-dimensional habitats with additional niches that can support diverse assemblages of organisms. In this study we investigated macrofaunal assemblages associated with the boulder field in the brackish Gulf of Gdansk. Of the 30 recorded taxa three animal species (Mytilus trossulus, Balanus improvisus and Electra crustulenta) together with five species of algae were directly attached to rocks. These engineering organisms provided habitats for a further 22 taxa. Among the fauna directly associated with rocks, barnacles (76%) were the most abundant while among indirectly associated biota, oligochaetes were the dominant group (45%). Rock size and algal biomass explained most variance in macrofaunal structure of the assemblages investigated. There were statistical differences in assemblage structure between two separate localities within the rocky patch, despite environmental homogeneity (salinity, water temperature and structure of sea bottom). These differences in assemblage structure were mostly due to differences in dominance of particular species rather than in species composition. Our results show that rocky patches in an otherwise soft sediment habitat provide additional living space for macrofauna leading to an increase in local biodiversity and organismal abundance.

North Atlantic humpback whales migrate from breeding grounds to high latitude feeding areas to where individuals display large scale site fidelity. In Godthaabsfjord (Greenland), humpback whales are present from early spring to late autumn. To test for small scale site fidelity and occurrence, identification-photographs were collected from May to September 2007 and 2008 and compared with an older catalogue. We found high small scale site fidelity where 40% of the whales present in 2007 were resighted in 2008. The average resight rate from 1992 to 2008 was 30.2%. Individuals did not remain in the fjord the entire season and the time spent in the fjord was highly variable amongst individuals varying between 7–60% of the time from May to September. Individual humpback whales in the presence and absence of boats were tracked with a land-based theodolite to test for effects of whale watching on whale behaviour. Whale watch vessels were shown to significantly increase whale swimming speed, to shorten long dives and diminish the ratio between surfacings and long dives. It is concluded that the same foraging whales use this fjord system year after year, calling for regulation of whale watching and for consideration when discussing reopening the whaling of humpback whales in West Greenland.

Foraging activity of roving herbivorous reef fish (RHs) from families Acanthuridae (surgeonfish; three species) and Scaridae (parrotfish; five species), and its relationship to resource availability and interference competition, was studied in the largest South Atlantic Reef complex (Abrolhos Bank, eastern Brazil). Observations were undertaken at four sites differing in resource availability and competitors' abundance (i.e. RHs and territorial herbivores from genus Stegastes). Turf algae (TA) were selected by most species in most sites, while other food items were generally avoided. Surgeonfish had higher feeding rates than parrotfish, the former grazing more frequently on fleshy algae (FA) and the latter on crustose calcareous algae (CCA). Both surgeonfish and parrotfish interacted agonistically most frequently with damselfish, followed by confamilial interactions. Despite these consistent patterns, feeding rates, food selection and frequency of agonistic interactions differed significantly between sites for most species. Bite rates on CCA and FA were disproportionally higher in sites where such items were more available, leading to significant spatial variation in grazing selectivity (i.e. positive rather than negative selection of CCA and ‘lower avoidance’ of FA). Although agonistic interactions were more frequent at sites where herbivorous fish (both roving and territorial) were most abundant, there was no clear relationship between interference competition and foraging patterns. These results indicate that the scarcity of other food may induce RHs to consume the dominant resources. They also support the hypotheses that RHs are unable to clear large tracts of reef surface of FA once these have proliferated, and that territorial herbivores do not limit the access of RHs to particular resources.

The main objective of this study was to describe the reproductive cycle of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus on the Cantabrian coast (north of Spain), and assess its relationship with environmental factors. To achieve this, samples were taken monthly from three localities during 17 months in two different habitats. At least 15 individuals from each location and habitat were collected during each sampling occasion and used for assessments of gonad index and histological sections. The water temperature and the chlorophyll concentration were also measured. The breeding season of P. lividus in Cantabria started in March and continued until September with one or two main spawning periods per year (depending on year and population), the first one in the beginning of spring and the second one in the summer. The most important differences in the gonad cycle were observed among localities, and the smallest among habitats. Temperature, photoperiod and nutritive stage are important factors controlling the gonad cycle. The beginning of spawning in the Cantabrian populations coincides with the spring phytoplankton bloom and the rise in temperature, which may act as environmental triggers.

Precopulatory mate guarding behaviour of the skeleton shrimp Caprella penantis is described. Moreover, the effects of body size, ownership and sex-ratio on mate guarding were examined experimentally in the laboratory. In the field population, the operational sex-ratio was male-biased. Guarding pairs, which were collected from the field, continued guarding for an average of 350 minutes in the laboratory, indicating that the normal guarding duration is approximately 10 hours. In this species, two guarding types were found: Type O and Type I-like. In Type O guarding, the male would fold the female into a horseshoe shape, whilst the male held the female parallel to him in Type I-like guarding. In the laboratory experiments, male body size was the most important factor affecting competition for a receptive female; ownership was the secondary factor. Guarding duration was prolonged when the sex-ratio was male-biased. Thus, the precopulatory mate guarding behaviour of C. penantis is influenced by several factors, such as body size, ownership and sex-ratio.

Amiantis umbonella is distributed throughout the coast of the northern Persian Gulf. This study of 893 clams provides data on reproduction, growth and production for the period April 2007 to March 2008 from two transects along the Bandar Abbas coast. Histological preparations showed six stages of gametogenic development: resting stage (Stage 0), early active (Stage I), late active (Stage II), ripe (Stage III), partially spawned (Stage IV) and spent (Stage V). The specimens were gonochoric and showed synchronized spawning. The reproductive cycle commenced in September and finished in March with one major spawning event in January which correlated with lower sea temperature. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters for the sample were asymptotic length (L∞) = 58–62 mm, growth constant (k) = 0.28–0.29 yr−1 and length zero (t0) = –0.48 –0.47. The mean annual clam abundance, mean biomass and production were 10 individuals. m−2, 5.7 g shell free dry weight (SFDW) m−2 and 0.495 g SFDW m−2 yr−1, respectively.

In order to understand how marine ecosystems function, it is essential to study the trophic interactions among the community members, particularly from poorly known regions. In this study, the feeding ecology and diet of conger eels, Conger conger, an abundant fish species with commercial interest, was examined in the north-east Atlantic, off Algarve (southern Portugal) between May 2005 and August 2006. The diet was characterized by species composition, size and mass of prey. Conger eels are opportunistic feeders, cannibalistic, feeding on benthopelagic/pelagic prey (67% by mass and 71% by number) but also benthic prey (32% by mass and 29% by number). Fish (67.8±4.7% in mass) are the main prey of conger eels, followed by cephalopods (16.5±3.8%) and crustaceans (15.6±3.7%). The most numerous (identifiable) fish consumed were Capros aper, occurring in 90% of the stomach samples that contained food and representing 1.4% in mass, and Scomber japonicus, the most important fish in mass (21.1%), which occurred in 4.2% of the stomach samples that contained food. The present study shows that octopodids can play a more important role in the diet of conger eels than previously thought. Of the species preyed upon by conger eels, six species (21% of the total prey taxa) are caught commercially (Trachurus trachurus, Scomber japonicus, Micromesistius poutassou, Helicolenus dactylopterus and Conger conger) by local fisheries. As discards by local trawl and longline fisheries do not correspond with the diet of C. conger, it is likely that most prey of C. conger in rocky areas were caught actively in that study region.

Knowledge about harbour porpoise and bottlenose dolphin occurrence in Cardigan Bay Special Area of Conservation (SAC), Wales, is limited to daylight hours during summer, when conditions are suitable for traditional visual surveys. T-PODs are autonomous instruments programmed to log time-cues of species-specific echolocation signals for long periods of time. Here we investigated bottlenose dolphin and harbour porpoise habitat use and partitioning by deploying ten calibrated T-PODs in Cardigan Bay SAC for one year. The T-PODs detected both species all year round with a peak of detections in April–October for dolphins and in October–March for porpoise, revealing a previously unknown importance of the place to harbour porpoise during winter. Though the two species are sympatric, simultaneous detections of both species were rare and indication of temporal habitat partitioning between the two species in some parts of the SAC was observed. The one location where simultaneous detections were not as rare was close to the stretch of shoreline where stranding of porpoises killed by dolphins are most common, suggesting that the observed spatiotemporal overlap leads to inter-specific interactions, in some cases fatal for the porpoise.
