A study has been made of the seasonal and other variations in the contents of fat, water and total solids (other than fat) of the flesh of herring. The herring studied were mainly from Scottish and Shetland waters.

Various races of herring, differing anatomically and with different spawning seasons, are considered separately.For each, the observed changes in chemical composition are considered in relation to the season of the year and the feeding and spawning cycles of the fish.

During May and June there is a rapid rise in the fat content of herring (demonstrated for some races and inferred for the rest). This is correlated with a period of intensive feeding. After the attainment of maximal values in July there is a fall to minimal values in April. The rapidity of the fall depends on the spawning season, a relatively high fat content being maintained until spawning takes place. During spawning there is a rapid fall in the fat content, due, in part at least, to cessation of feeding.

The study of diurnal vertical movements of macro-plankton (Russell, 1925) showed that many organisms, including amphipods migrated to the surface of the sea at night. Since this work there have been several papers reporting vertical movements in intertidal waters. Elmhirst (1931), demonstrated that certain species of amphipod swam in the surf zone during the night and that they showed seasonal variations in numbers, with a spring maximum. Subsequently, Watkin (1939, 1941) distinguished between those in-faunal species performing nocturnal vertical migrations into the surf and tidal immigrants carried in from sub-littoral habitats by the tide.

Length–weight relationships were estimated for 18 Red Sea immigrant fish species from the eastern Mediterranean coasts of Turkey. The values of the exponent b in the length–weight regression (W= aLb) ranged between 2·482 and 3·355. The median value was 3·018 and 50% of the values ranged between 2·835 and 3·121.

The effects of deep-sea bottom longlining on fish communities and the benthic ecosystem, as well as the interactions between fishing and seabirds, were studied based on data collected from a joint collaboration between the Spanish Institute of Oceanography and a longliner, carried out on the Hatton Bank area (north-east Atlantic) in 2008. A total of 38 longline sets were distributed mainly along the rugged bottom of the rocky outcrop at depths ranging from 750 to 1500 m. Deep-water sharks and lotids were predominant in the catches contributing respectively 80.4% and 13.1% in terms of weight. Deep-water sharks were predominant in the discards. By-catch of cold-water corals and small glass sponges occurred along the western flank of the Hatton Bank, while large hexactinellids were found along the eastern flank. Longlines fished the adult fraction of vulnerable deep-water sharks and lotids. High catches per unit effort values for these species were obtained in coral areas. A combination of seabird-scaring streamer lines and other measures of preventing seabird by-catch were used. Only one fulmar was captured and it survived. Data on distribution of marine litter and derelict deep-sea gillnets are also presented.

Cuvier's beaked whale is a poorly-known species. It has been considered common since 1980 in the Pelagos Sanctuary (north-western Mediterranean Sea), but it has hardly been studied, chiefly due to difficulties in sighting. Stranding data indicates that the beaked whale is present all along the Ligurian coast. As with any deep-diving odontocete, Cuvier's beaked whale feeds mostly on deep-sea squid, but also on some fish and a small number of crustaceans. As a consequence, it is thought to be found mainly in waters deeper than 1000 m, where the sea bed has a particular slope. The aim of this work is to analyse a large quantity of sightings in order to define the favoured habitat of the beaked whale. Topographic features such as depth, depth gradient and bathymetric anomaly were analysed due to their direct influence on the prey of Cuvier's beaked whales. Data were registered between Genova and Imperia, from 2000 to 2006. Two hundred and forty-seven sightings were recorded, a total of 532 whales. The mean herd size observed was 2.3±1.5 (range=1–11). For 40 sightings, the group composition was divided into maturity categories, using results obtained by photo-identification. Seventeen groups consisted of purely immature animals, and 4 groups consisted of only mature animals. The 19 mixed herds were composed mainly of 4.0±2.2 individuals (range=2–8) and consisted of 58% mature individuals. The 17 immature groups consisted of 2.1±0.9 individuals. Mature animals were usually found alone. Forty-eight per cent of beaked whales were seen where the depth was between 756 and 1389 m but the encounter rate was higher between depths of 1389 and 2021 m. The sightings were more frequent (34%) where the sea floor slope was between 31 and 51 m/km but the encounter rate was higher where the sea floor slope was between 11 and 31 m/km. The encounter rate for Cuvier's beaked whales was higher where the depth anomaly was positive with values between 342 and 586 m.

A series of nine plankton cruises was completed by the research ships ‘Sir Lancelot’ and ‘Platessa’ in the spring of 1954 to study the ecology of a patch of Calanus finmarchicus (Gunner.) off the north-east coast of England. This paper will deal with the problems encountered in identifying such a patch over the period from 19 March to 4 June 1954.

1. Ciliary currents concerned with rejection of sediment from the mantle cavity of pectinibranch Prosobranchia consist of A, currents carrying heavier particles to the inhalent opening; B, currents carrying medium particles across the floor of the mantle cavity; C, currents carrying fine particles over and between the gill filaments for later consolidation by the mucus from the hypobranchial gland. Material in currents B and C is rejected from the exhalent opening.

2. The feeding currents in ciliary feeding Prosobranchia represent modifications of these rejection currents.

3. In Vermetus novae-hollandiae currents B and C only are modified, material being passed to the mouth region, where it is mixed with mucus from the large pedal gland, by way of a food groove.

4. In Crepidula fornicata and other Calyptraeidae all currents are modified for feeding and there is an endostyle for mucus secretion.

A study of tributyltin (TBT) uptake, tissue distribution and breakdown in dog-whelks, Nucella lapillus, was carried out using 14C-labelled tributyltin chloride. The compound was introduced into animals by exposure to sea-water, from a diet of labelled mussels and by injection. Measurements of 14C were made on tissue extracts containing total 14C, TBT+DBT and TBT. Organs examined included digestive gland, kidney, mantle, foot, viscera, gonads and blood. Absorption of dissolved TBT occurred primarily via tissues associated with the mantle: autoradiographic evidence showed that of these the ctenidium (gill) and osphradium were probably most important. Of non-reproductive tissues, mantle displayed least evidence of TBT degradation whereas kidney and digestive gland contained lower proportions of 14C as TBT (~60%) than other tissues. By virtue of its more rapid response, initially at least, the kidney had a primary role in degrading dissolved TBT that reached the blood. Dog-whelks feeding on labelled Mytilus edulis absorbed organotins very efficiently via the digestive gland, which then played a major role in TBT breakdown. However, the capacity for degradation is not sufficient to prevent, TBT concentration factors of the order of 100,000 (dry tissue/water) being attained in N. lapillus. Autoradiography revealed surprisingly high grain-counts in nerves, which may be significant in view of evidence in the literature that neurohormones are intermediaries in the chain linking TBT with imposex.

The invasive kelp Undaria pinnatifida was observed for the first time in the Nuevo Gulf (Patagonia, Argentina) in December 1992. At the present time, with the exception of sandy bottoms, the coasts of the Nuevo Gulf are almost entirely colonized. From October 1997 to February 2000, the characteristics of this population, i.e. the relationships between morphological features and seawater temperature, the seasonality in sporophyll development and the proportions of different reproductive stages during its life cycle, were analysed. The observations confirmed that the maximal mean densities of sporophytes (149.1 plants m−2) occurred in winter while the mean tallest sporophytes (88.5 cm) and the mean highest biomass (16501 g m−2) were registered in spring and at the beginning of the summer. Coexisting juvenile and mature sporophytes were found. Sporophylls showed also seasonal characteristics, with maximal width in summer. Manipulative experiments conducted for testing the recruitment pattern of Undaria pinnatifida confirmed that the presence of juvenile individuals was uninterrupted. Thus, in this paper, we denote that U. pinnatifida has a constant recruitment, together with high reproductive rates, which are some of the characteristics of an introduced species, which explains why they became a highly invasive species or ‘pest species’, with negative environmental and economic effects.

Being sessile filter feeders, sponges may be disadvantaged by sediments in many ways, e.g. through clogging and burial. However, in order to correctly recognize negative effects of sediments in the field, natural relationships of sponge taxa adapted to a life with sediments need to be understood. The present publication reviews available literature and provides observations on natural and beneficial interactions of sponges with sediments, distinguishing several strategies: (1) Saving energy through sediment incorporation, reducing or replacing spicule production commonly occurs in keratose, verongimorph, tethyid and poecilosclerid sponges, which often received scientific names referring to sediments. (2) Forming sediment crusts externally or embedded in surface tissues reinforces outer layers, provides shade, and for external crusts camouflage and shelter from spongivory and desiccation. External crusts often occur in the tethyids and axinellids, while surface armour is most common in keratose sponges. (3) Anchoring in soft sediments provides a selective advantage for space colonization. This is mainly achieved in the hexactinellid, polymastiid and spirophorine sponges by using spicules (predominantly in deeper water), commonly in endopsammic sponges by rootlets, basal agglutination and basal incorporation of particles, and in various groups by attachment to buried materials (shallow water). (4) Living at least partially embedded in sediments (psammobiosis) appears to be best developed in Oceanapia spp. and bioeroding sponges, generates shelter from various external conditions and reduces the risk of spongivory. Typical morphological characters of sediment-adapted sponges are thus sediment skeletons and surface crusts (reinforcement), stalks and fistules (elevation above sediments), spicule tufts and root-systems (anchoring).

An earlier time-series of the annual mean latitude of the north wall of the Gulf Stream is updated to give a series of values from 1966 to 1990. The trend is similar to those seen in plankton from the Continuous Plankton Recorder Survey around the British Isles. This connection may reflect the displacement of storm tracks across the North Atlantic.

Changes in blood glucose levels in teleosts have been reviewed by a number of workers. Epple (1969) considered the regulation of glucose by the insulin of the fish pancreatic islet tissue, Nakano & Tomlinson (1967) examined the regulation of glucose by the catecholamines, Black, Robertson & Parker (1961) considered glucose in carbohydrate metabolism of teleost muscle, while knowledge of regulation of blood glucose in Chondrichthyans has recently been extended and reviewed by Patent (1968, 1970). The investigation of blood glucose levels and their control mechanisms dealt with in this paper forms part of a broader study of the changes that occur when fish are caught from the wild and placed in aquaria (Wardle, 1968, 1971, and unpublished). In this study, capture is considered as a stimulus imposed on the wild fish, which initiates a series of physiological changes that can be measured as the fish adapts to the aquarium.

The analysis shows that the diatom community resides mainly in the top 2 mm of the mud and when in bright light the community moves less than 1 mm towards the surface of the estuarine mud, although the colour of the mud changes noticeably.

The fine mud supports more diatoms than the coarse mud, and the community in fine mud is nearer to the mud surface, but this is probably caused by the more rapid extinction of light in fine mud than in the coarse mud, while also large spaces between the coarse mud particles may offer less protection from the effect of tidal scour than in fine mud, this giving contributory explanation for the less abundant community in coarse mud.

The retina of larval herring (Clupea harengus L.) contains only cones, with rods recruited progressively from about eight weeks onwards. The molecular species composition of phospholipids from the eyes of herring of different ages was determined to find whether the appearance of di-docosahexaenoyl molecular species (di22:6n-3) of phospholipids, which are characteristic of rod outer segment membranes in higher vertebrates, coincided with the appearance of rods. In the eyes of larval herring (cone-only retina) di22:6n-3 molecular species comprised 25.9% of phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), 22.9% of phosphatidylserine (PS) and 4.2% of phosphatidylcholine (PC). In the eyes of adult herring (rod:cone ratio of about 20:1) the proportion of di22:6n-3 molecular species had increased to 49.5%, 39.0% and 16.8% in PE, PS and PC, respectively. Juvenile herring had intermediate values of di22:6n-3 phospholipids. The results confirm the hypothesis that the amounts of di22:6n-3 molecular species of phospholipids in retina increase during development as rods appear, and also show that cones contain smaller amounts of these unique lipids. Three other molecular species containing docosahexaenoic acid, 16:0/22:6n-3, 18:1/22:6n-3 and 18:0/22:6n-3 were also major components of eye phospholipids, emphasizing the important role of 22:6n-3 in vision.

The velum of Lacuna vincta (Montagu) and Nassarius incrassatus (Ström) is retracted into the shell by 2 dorsal and 2 ventral groups of muscles, bilaterally arranged, which are components of the larval retractor muscle. Each dorsal group passes forward from its area of origin on the shell to the dorsal part of the head where some fibres insert and adjacent ones enter the velar fold. The velum is bilobed in Lacuna and the muscles radiate through the dorsal half of the lobe to insert on the anterior and posterior surfaces and ciliated edge, whereas Nassarius has 4 long velar lobes, 2 dorsal and 2 ventral, and the muscles form a median bundle from which fibres radiate to similar insertions. Each ventral group of muscles passes through the nerve ring lateral to the developing radular sac in Lacuna and to the developing proboscis in Nassarius, and muscles accompanying them insert on the sac and proboscis wall. Anterior to the ring some muscles insert on the lips and the buccal wall posterior to the oral sphincter and alongside attachments of muscles from the foot. The majority pass to the mentum, a median protuberance of the lower lip with non-vibratile cilia, where right and left ventral cephalic retractors and muscles from the foot converge. The pedal muscles attach here and from this area muscles radiate to multiple insertions on the head and ventral half of the velum. This arrangement of the ventral muscles allows the increased angle of mobility required by the ventral areas of the velum in swimming and feeding and the intimate contact between velum and foot.

Our knowledge of the export of solids and solutes by streams from different types of catchments has lagged behind that of water yield despite the fact that it is important in the prediction of erosion and landform development as well as the prediction of water quality. To remedy this shortcoming there has developed an increasing interest in export of various substances by small catchments. Gregory & Walling (1974) have described this trend as well as our growing awareness of the need to concern ourselves with the variation of fluvial processes as a function of landform, geology and land use. But because few studies of this sort have been completed in Great Britain, Gregory & Walling stressed the need to understand the controls on sediment and solute production, particularly in a variety of different landforms and geological formations.

Cyanophage abundance has been shown to fluctuate over long timescales and with depth, but little is known about how it varies over short timescales. Previous short-term studies have relied on counting total virus numbers and therefore the phages which infect cyanobacteria cannot be distinguished from the total count.

In this study, an isolation-based approach was used to determine cyanophage abundance from water samples collected over a depth profile for a 24 h period from the Indian Ocean. Samples were used to infect Synechococcus sp. WH7803 and the number of plaque forming units (pfu) at each time point and depth were counted. At 10 m phage numbers were similar for most time-points, but there was a distinct peak in abundance at 0100 hours. Phage numbers were lower at 25 m and 50 m and did not show such strong temporal variation. No phages were found below this depth. Therefore, we conclude that only the abundance of phages in surface waters showed a clear temporal pattern over a short timescale. Fifty phages from a range of depths and time points were isolated and purified. The molecular diversity of these phages was estimated using a section of the phage-encoded psbD gene and the results from a phylogenetic analysis do not suggest that phages from the deeper waters form a distinct subgroup.

This article is a comparison and a synthesis of laboratory and field studies focused on the influence of larval and early juvenile behaviour on the recruitment mechanisms of sole in the northern part of the Bay of Biscay. Laboratory studies concerned the individual behaviour of larvae and juveniles, in particular, changes in swimming activity controlled by endogenous factors and also reactions to light, current, pressure and feeding conditions. Experiments were performed in different types of tanks fitted with special devices to vary light, pressure and current. Specific methods using visual observations and an infra-red converter as well as actographic techniques with infra-red barriers were utilized. The relative contribution of endogenous and external factors on swimming activity and orientation vary during ontogenesis. Field studies concern a time series of fine-scale vertical distribution of larval stages. Endogenous rhythms and light seem to play an important role in the control of diel vertical migration from early larval stages, whereas semi-diurnal and tidal behaviour could develop mainly after metamorphosis. A simulation is used for the study of the interactions between individual behaviour and tidal currents. Based on laboratory and field observations we propose and discuss a hypothesis of transport and migration. In the Bay of Biscay, such a hypothesis involves diffusion processes enhanced by active behaviour.

Weight–length relationships of some of the most abundant bivalve species from the Algarve coast (southern Portugal) captured during several exploratory fishing surveys carried out during 2000 on a soft bottom in the subtidal zone down to 25 m depth are reported. For this study a total of 7429 individuals were sampled, belonging to 25 bivalve species in nine families. The most represented families were Mactridae and Veneridae with six species, immediately followed by the families Cardiidae (five species) and Donacidae (three species). The results revealed that most species presented isometric (11 species) or positive allometric relationships (11 species), while only a small minority of species displayed negative growth (three species).

The strength of the North Atlantic Current (NAC) (based on sea-surface elevation slopes derived from altimeter data) is correlated with westerly winds (based on North Atlantic Oscillation [NAO] Index data over a nine year period [1992–2002] with 108 monthly values). The data time window includes the major change in climate forcing over the last 100 years (1995 to 1996). It is shown that the NAO Index can be used for early warning of system failure for the NAC. The correlation response or early warning time scale for western Europe and south England is six months. The decay scale for the NAC and Subtropical Gyre circulation is estimated as three years. Longer period altimeter elevation/circulation changes are discussed. The sea-surface temperature (SST) response of the North Sea to negative and positive NAO conditions is examined. The overall temperature response for the central North Sea to NAO index forcing, reflecting wind induced inflow, shelf circulation and local climate forcing, is ∼5 months. In years with strong North Atlantic winter wind induced inflow, under marked NAO positive conditions, mean temperatures (∼10.5°C) are about 1°C warmer than under negative conditions. In 1996 under extreme negative winter NAO conditions, the North Sea circulation stopped, conditions near the Dogger Bank became more continentally influenced and the winter (March) temperature fell to 3.1°C whereas in 1995 under NAO positive winter conditions the minimum temperature was 6.4°C (February). Seasonal advance of North Atlantic and North Sea temperature is derived in relation to temperature change. Temperature change and monthly NAO Index are discussed with respect to phytoplankton blooms, chlorophyll-a measurements, ocean colour data and the anomalous north-eastern Atlantic 2002 spring/summer bloom SeaWiFS chlorophyll concentrations.
