A series of visual–acoustic surveys were carried out in the Mediterranean Sea between 2003 and 2007 from RV ‘Song of the Whale’. Almost 21,000 km of trackline were surveyed between the longitudes of 14°W and 36°E with an emphasis on regions with low survey effort. Survey tracklines were designed to provide even coverage probability with random start points. Ten cetacean species were positively identified (sperm whale, fin whale, Cuvier's beaked whale, false killer whale, long-finned pilot whale, Risso's dolphin, common bottlenose dolphin, rough-toothed dolphin, striped dolphin and short-beaked common dolphin). Several of these species, plus sei whale and harbour porpoise, were also encountered in the Atlantic contiguous area (the entrance waters of the Mediterranean between the Iberian Peninsula and north-west Morocco). These surveys expand and clarify the known distributions of cetaceans within the Mediterranean basin. New species documented from Libyan waters include sperm whale, striped dolphin and rough-toothed dolphin. False killer whales and rough-toothed dolphins were documented for the first time off Cyprus. Live harbour porpoises were seen for the first time on Morocco's Atlantic seaboard. It is suggested that the status of rough-toothed dolphins in the Mediterranean be revised from visitor to regular species. Substantial new information on encounter rates is now available for the planning of a basin-wide systematic survey of cetaceans within the Mediterranean Sea and contiguous Atlantic waters.

The hydroid assemblage of the Siladen Island coral reef (North Sulawesi, Indonesia) is made up of 107 species belonging to 51 genera and 28 families. The study of their spatial distribution has identified three different zones which are well-characterized: (1) the reef flat, where hydroids are mainly represented by cryptic species living in the shady crevices of the corals, epibiontic on sponges or sea grasses; (2) the edge of the reef characterized by hydroids growing mainly on the shady side of the corals, with the exception of the tufts of the large colonies of the stinging zooxanthellate Aglaophenia cupressina; and (3) the vertical reef, where hydroids reach their maximum diversity and abundance and are often involved in symbiotic relationships.

The number of hydroid species shows a seasonal trend with a summer minimum (July–September) and a winter maximum (November–February). The strong correlation between these variations and the abundance of rainfall suggests that food availability, strictly related to the seasonal amount of rain, represents the main abiotic factor triggering the hydroid species richness and the abundance of this tropical assemblage.

Seventy-two holdfast samples of the kelp Laminaria hyperborea (Gunn.) Fosl., from fifteen approximately equidistant sites along the North-East coast of Britain, from St Abbs in Berwickshire to Flamborough Head, have been taken during the course of one spring-tide period. The nematode fauna of these samples (20,744 specimens of 61 species) has been examined and the data are presented in such a way as to facilitate comparison with previous work. The fauna in the North Sea is dominated by large enoploid species. Enoplus communis Bastian, Anticoma acuminata (Eberth), Thoracostoma coronatum (Eberth), Phanoderma albidum Bastian and Pontonema vulgaris (Bastian) are regularly abundant. The minor contribution of the family Monohysteridae indicates that silt is of little importance to the nematode fauna in exposed localities. The holdfast-dwelling nematodes are generally epigrowth feeders or omnivores, the latter exploiting the sediment-feeding niche apparently unavailable to specialized deposit feeders. Species with short body setae, body length above 1·5 mm, having smooth cuticles and possessing some visual mechanism are dominant. It is upheld that algal structure per se is of primary importance in determining the different nematode communities found to exist in algae of different growth forms, and to account for the similarity shown between the faunas inhabiting similar algal growth forms from widely separate geographical areas and differing levels on the shore. It is suggested that habitat-component generic keys might facilitate investigation of unknown regions.

Worms were allowed to burrow in sand in the laboratory. The general form of their burrows resembled that found in the field. Their behaviour was studied by continuously recording the water movements through the burrows for periods up to 3 weeks.

Whenever the worms were feeding from a gradually subsiding cone and piling up castings, as they do in the field, a characteristic cyclical pattern was traced. This was marked by conspicuous diphasic excursions at intervals of about 40 min. Defaecation occurs at the summit of the first phase. By comparison with records got from worms in glass tubes (Wells, 1949), it is inferred that the first phase consists of tailward locomotion to the sand surface, and the second to headward irrigation accompanied by gentle creeping back to the feeding point. The whole cycle is identical with the intermittent irrigation cycle shown in glass tubes.

Contradictory evidence has led to contrasting hypotheses as regards the origin in Actinia equina. L. of the juvenile anemones which may be found being brooded within adults. We have found, in a North Yorkshire population, a very low proportion of males, but these, as well as individuals lacking gonads, often contained young. All young resembled in colour the adults from which they were obtained. Adults maintained in isolation so as to prevent fertilization continued to produce young. Also ova apparently undergoing cell division were found within female gonads. By contrast, small fragments of anemone, although adopting the appearance of larvae, when cultured, do not develop into juveniles. We conclude that within the population studied reproduction is most probably by parthenogenesis.

Seasonal variations in the gonad index and the biochemical composition of gonad and gut tissue of the sea urchin, Paracentrotus lividus (Echinodermata: Echinoidea) were determined. Samples were collected from Lorbé (Galicia, north-western Spain) between November 1994 and October 1995. The gametogenic cycle of the sea urchin was annual, with a long, single spawning period from May to August 1995. Most of the biochemical components in gonad showed clear seasonal variation, which was related to the gonad cycle. The main component was protein, which ranged between 36 and 60% of the dry weight, with maximum levels coinciding with the minimum levels of glycogen. Gonad glycogen therefore seemed to be the energy source employed for protein synthesis during gametogenesis. Seasonal variation in total lipids in the gonad was less evident; the main lipidic component was triacylglycerol (around 10% of the dry weight), whereas total cholesterol accounted for less than 1%. The gut does not seem to act as a storage tissue in P. lividus and seasonal variation in biochemical components may be a consequence of fluctuations in the availability of food.

The polychaete family Polynoidae (scale-worms) is well-represented at deep sea hydrothermal vents. Most species are free-living in a wide range of habitats: from high-temperature hydrothermal `chimney' walls to diffuse venting areas. Conversely, species of the genus Branchipolynoe live inside the mantle cavity of vent and seep mytilids. Specimens, morphologically close to Branchipolynoe seepensis, have been reported from all the known vent areas on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), with varying infestation rates (0–6 individuals per host). Reproductive tract, gametogenesis and population structures were examined for specimens from the Lucky Strike vent field (MAR) in order to test whether this species displays dwarf males, protandric hermaphroditism or differential mortality between males and females. Observations of histological sections reveal the presence of fully developed ovaries in females which originate ventrally in segments 7–9 and of an unusual genital tract in which both sperm and mature oocytes are stored. Oogenesis is intraovarian and quasi-continuous. The vitellogenic oocytes are only free in the coelom at their terminal growing stage and are then transferred into an ovisac through spermathecae. The species displays an external sexual dimorphism in the number of genital papillae and the shape of the pygidial appendages. Sex ratios showed significant deviations from a 1:1 expected ratio, in favour of females. The modal decompositions of size–frequency histograms show the occurrence of three modes in females and only two modes in males, indicating discrete breeding periods. The two first modes were not significantly different between males and females. These results indicate that B. seepensis forms heterosexual pairs and uses internal fertilization to reproduce during discrete spawning periods. Differential mortality between males and females is likely to shape size-histograms as observed by preventing males from reaching the female proportions. Such an observation could be a result of either cannibalism on larger males, small sizes facilitating the male escape, or natural predation when males move from one bivalve to another to breed.

Incidence of epibiosis has been studied in the deep-water portunid crab Bathynectes piperitus in the Benguela upwelling region. The serpulid polychaete Spirorbis cf. patagonicus, the hydroid Stegopoma plicatile and the stalked cirripede Poecilasma kaempferi were the commonest epizoitic species. Analysis revealed some biological and ecological features of the host population: the species does not have a terminal moult; both sexes show different moulting patterns; sexual maturity occurs at around 35 mm carapace length; there is asynchronous moulting among different sub-populations in different geographical areas; burying behaviour appears to be not very widespread.

The combined effects of cadmium (Cd) and temperature on the physiology (oxygen consumption rate (MO2)) and biochemistry (glycogen, metallothionein (MT) and Cd concentrations) of fasted dogwhelks Nucella lapillus were investigated using two Cd concentrations (<0.01 or 500 μg l−1) and two water temperatures (5 or 10°C). After 20 days of exposure, the MO2 of dogwhelks of various sizes (12—32 mm in shell length) were measured individually. Dogwhelks exposed to Cd exhibited significantly lower MO2 at 10°C but not at 5°C when compared with controls at the same temperature. Inhibition of MO2 by Cd increased with increasing water temperature and decreasing animal size. Cadmium exposure caused significant reductions in glycogen concentrations in foot muscle and digestive gland at both temperatures. Cadmium-exposed dogwhelks showed significantly higher MT concentrations in the Leiblein gland at 10°C but not at 5°C, indicating that MT synthesis is temperature dependent and temperature is an important factor affecting toxicity of Cd in N. lapillus. Activity of dogwhelks and oxygen carrying capacity of the haemolymph, were significantly reduced as a result of Cd-exposure at 10°C. In addition, mucus secretion and necrotic cells were observed on the gill surface of Cd-exposed individuals. Therefore, reduction in MO2 may be directly linked to Cd-induced mucus production, structural damage to gills and reduction in oxygen carrying capacity of haemocyanin. However, metabolic depression, including low MO2 and activity, in Cd-exposed N. lapillus may be a strategy to: (i) minimize the uptake and toxicity of Cd; and (ii) minimize energy expenditure to spare energy reserves for detoxification (e.g. MT synthesis) and maintenance (e.g. repair of cellular damage). The results are discussed with reference to the use of MT and glycogen as biomarkers for metal exposure and toxicity in marine molluscs.

A comparative study of the following luminous copepods was undertaken: Metridia lucens, M. longa, M. princeps, Pleuromamma robusta, P. xiphias, Heterorhabdus norvegicus, H. robustus, Heterostylites longicornis, Lucicutia grandis, Hemirhabdus grimaldii, Disseta palumboi, Euaugaptilus magnus and Centraugaptilus horridus. Flashes produced by electrical stimulation (a.c. or condenser shocks) and mechanical stimulation were recorded photoelectrically. Flashes lasted from 2 to 37 sec. Latencies of some species (Metridiidae), following electrical stimulation, were very short, 7–9 msec. Intensities ranged from 0·02 × 10–5 to 14·4 × 10–5μW/s cm2 of receptor surface at 15 cm distance (0.0045 × 10–2 to 3·24 × 10–2μW/Cm2 at 1 cm) (10–20°C). Luminous glands of Metridiidae, Lucicutiidae and Augaptilidae are autofluorescent; the location of the luminous glands in these families and in Heterorhabdidae is described. Two kinds of glandular cells (types 1 and 2) occur in the luminescent areas. The cells are large saccular structures containing granular or homogeneous material, and are distinguished by staining peculiarities. Cell types 1 and 2 open through common pores, and may be the source of luminous reactants. Some measurements of luminescence in other pelagic animals are presented, for comparison with copepods, viz. Aequorea macrodactyla, Aeginura grimaldii (Hydromedusae), Periphylla periphylla (Scyphomedusa), Meganyctiphanes norvegica and Acanthephyra pelagica (Crustacea), Myctophum punctatum (Teleostei). Our present knowledge regarding luminescence among copepods is reviewed.

Kelps, fucoids and other large brown seaweeds are common and important features of temperate coastal zones. The British Isles is a centre for seaweed diversity in the NE Atlantic, but, despite numerous surveys, an incomplete picture of the distribution remains. Survey data and herbarium specimens were used to examine the environmental preference of 15 species of large brown seaweeds, covering the orders Laminariales (kelps), Fucales (wracks) and one species of Tilopteridales. Habitat suitability models were developed to estimate broad-scale distribution and area of habitat created by these species around the British Isles. Topographic parameters were important factors limiting distributions. Generally, temperature did not appear to be a limiting factor, probably because the British Isles lies in the centre of the NE Atlantic distribution for most species, and not at climatic tolerance limits. However, for the recent migrant Laminaria ochroleuca, temperature was found to be important for the model, thus range expansion could continue northwards provided dispersal is possible. In contrast, the widespread Alaria esculenta showed a negative association with warmer summer temperatures. The total potential habitat around the British and Irish coastline is more than 19,000 km2 for kelps and 11,000 km2 for wracks, which represents a significant habitat area similar in scale to British broadleaf forest. We conclude that large brown algal species need to be managed and conserved in a manner that reflects their scale and importance.

A total of 13 boring species of spionid polychaetes were extracted from 28 different calcareous substrata (i.e. mollusc shells, coralline algae and barnacle tests) from Japan. The spionids were: seven Polydora spp.: Polydora brevipalpa, P. websteri, P. curiosa, P. uncinata, P. aura, P. glycymerica, Polydora sp; five Dipolydora spp.: Dipolydora concharum, D. bidentata, D. alborectalis, D. giardi, D. armata; and one Carazziella sp.: Carazziella reishi. All of them inhabited self-excavated burrows in living and/or migratory calcareous substrata and they were never found from soft sediments. Burrow structures were species-specific. The Polydora species basically excavated simple U-shaped burrows, while the Dipolydora species excavated more varied, distinct burrows. The boring activity seemed species-specific among polydorids. This study attempts to summarize and discuss the biological characteristics of these boring species inhabiting Japan. In addition, P. curiosa, P. glycymerica, Polydora sp., D. giardi and C. reishi are new to Japan.

Vegetative annual cycle and primary production were described in the sea grass Posidonia oceanica in competition with two Ulvophycea, Caulerpa taxifolia (Cap Martin, France) and Caulerpa racemosa (Antignano, Italy). Sampling was performed at three stations exhibiting increasing levels of interaction with Caulerpa. Significant differences were observed as a function of the Caulerpa species, season and level of interaction. For each interaction, the different parameters have some seasonal variations. Any effects of the two Caulerpa species has been detected on the seasonal variability of our parameters. For all seasons, with increasing levels of interaction, the P. oceanica adult and intermediate leaf lengths, leaf index and mean age of the leaves always decrease whereas percentage of leaves having lost their apices, epiphyte biomass per unit surface area, mean number of leaves produced per shoot and per year always increase. Conversely, mean number of leaves per shoot or below-ground tissue production do not seem to be affected by Caulerpa. Finally, primary production of P. oceanica, by an increased turnover of the foliar tissues, was greater in the case of high interaction.

In a series of experiments to investigate feeding and excretion in bivalves, Mya arenaria, Venus striatula, Ostrea edulis and Cuspidaria cuspidata were fed with suspensions of Phaeodactylum labelled with 32P. Although there is considerable variation in the filtering rates, specimens of O. edulis were found to have an average rate of 6·6 ml./h/mg dry body tissue. This figure is more than six times greater than that recorded for M. arenaria and V. striatula. No filtration was recorded in the carnivore C. cuspidata.

The data presented here demonstrate that the sea cucumber Cucumaria frondosa secretes a biologically active mucus that helps maintain gametogenic synchrony among conspecifics. Either a whole mature individual or a sample of its freshly collected mucus was able to initiate gametogenesis in conspecifics that were in the gametogenic recovery stage when other environmental conditions, including daylength, were maintained constant. Similar results were obtained when the mucus was kept in seawater for less than 3 h prior to its use, whereas after 6 h in seawater, the mucus had lost its inducing properties. Laboratory experiments showed that the mucus was produced in lesser amount during late summer and autumn; the production rapidly increased in early January to reach a peak a few months before the June spawning, in 1992 and 1993. The increment of mucus production was concurrent with the initiation of gametogenesis. Synthesis of mucus was maximal in individuals having attained gametogenic maturity and minimum in individuals with less developed gonads. At first relatively stable in seawater, the mucus gradually lost its integrity within a period of 3–5 h, suggesting that the mucus may be carried over long distances by currents, thus allowing a transfer of information before its complete degradation. This phenomenon was observed in the field where streams of mucus could be followed by SCUBA divers as far as 20–30 m away from the secreting animal. The data presented here are the first evidence of the important role played by mucus secretion during the gametogenic processes of an echinoderm.

Eight marine oligotrichous ciliates including one new genus, two new combinations, and five new species collected from the Yellow Sea, north-eastern China, are morphologically and biometrically investigated based on observations of living specimens and permanent preparations after protargol impregnation: Strombidium tintinnodes; Novistrombidium testaceum gen. nov., comb. nov. (formerly Strombidium testaceum); Tontonia turbinata sp. nov.; Pelagostrobilidium simile sp. nov.; Rimostrombidium orientale sp. nov.; Strombidinopsis elongata sp. nov.; Strombidinopsis elegans sp. nov., and Strombidinopsis minima comb. nov. (formerly Strobilidium minimum). Four junior synonyms are considered: Strombidium oculatum; S. obliquum; S. hadai and Strombidinopsis cheshiri. A comparison with other known members within Strombidiidae resulted in the establishment of a new genus, Novistrombidium gen. nov. It is similar to Strombidium but characterized by the conspicuously opened girdle kinety with a large gap on its ventral side, through which the ventral kinety extends.

A mid-shore colonial algal turf community is described. Samples were analysed to determine if species composition, invertebrate epiphyte density, algal mat biomass, and the amount of sediment trapped among algal thalli differed with respect to substratum slope and wave height.

Colonial algal turf was approximately 1–3 cm in height and predominantly composed of a mixture of four species of eurythermal red algae, including Gelidium crinale (Turner) Lamouroux (Rhodophyceae: Gelidiales), Centroceras clavulatum (C. Agardh) Montagne, Polysiphonia denudata (Dillwyn) Kuetzing, and Bryocladia cuspidata (J. Agardh) De Toni (Rhodophyceae: Ceramiales). More delicate algae and algal epiphytes were found at stations with lower mean wave height, while non-epiphytic coralline algae were found only at stations with higher mean wave height. Algal mat mass was significantly greater on horizontal slopes than on vertical slopes, but did not differ with respect to wave-height levels. Algal mats trapped significantly more sediment on horizontal slopes with lower mean wave height.

Densities of the three most abundant invertebrate epiphytes appeared to be related to sediment deposition. Like sedimentation patterns, disparities in population densities on different substratum slopes increased with lower mean wave height. The highest densities of the amphipods Elasmopus rapax Costa and Hyale frequens Haswell (Crustacea: Peracarida) occurred on horizontal slopes at stations with significantly lower mean wave height. The highest densities of the tree oyster Isognomon bicolor C.B. Adams (Mollusca: Pterioida) were on vertical slopes at stations with significantly lower mean wave height. Barnacle epiphytes occurred in higher densities at stations receiving greater mean wave height, while dominant species of other crustaceans and molluscs had higher densities at stations with significantly lower mean wave height.

Dispersion of Lepeophtheirus salmonis Kreyer 1838 (Crustacea: Caligidae) larvae from a single cage and also from a farm system was investigated in Ardmore Bay, west coast of Ireland. Surface plankton tows were taken from within a cage and also at various distances from the farm. Highest densities of larvae (maximum, 66·1 m−3) were consistently recorded within the cage. Less than 10% of the larval density recorded inside the cage was found outside at any one time, indicating a high retention of larvae within the cage throughout the sampling period. This was due to a reduction of water movement inside the cage caused by the physical barrier of the net which was fouled during the sampling period. Highest densities of larvae were consistently found in samples taken at 10 m (maximum, 4·8 m−3) from the last cage on the farm in comparison to those taken further away from it (maximum, at 1 km; 0·4 m−3). Regression analysis of the data from each of the sampling dates showed a significant inverse relationship (P=0·001) between distance and larval numbers. The models produced suggest that few louse larvae would have been recovered in samples (i.e. 100 m plankton surface tows) taken more than 2 km from the last cage on the farm. Although the ratio of copepodids to nauplii increased with distance from the farm, the densities of the copepodids did not increase.

The natural feeding of the two most abundant ommastrephid squid (Cephalopoda: Ommastrephidae) in Galician waters was studied and compared. A sample of 334 stomach contents of Todaropsis eblanae (34–222 mm ML) and 267 stomach contents of Illex coindetii (50–379 mm ML) caught by commercial trawlers was examined. A total of 21 (T. eblanae) and 23 (I. coindetii) different prey items, belonging to three zoological groups (Teleostei, Crustacea and Cephalopoda), were taken by these cephalopods. However, 43% of the T. eblanae diet comprised only one fish species, Micromesistius poutassou. The diet of these squid species was significantly influenced by the geographical area (both species), size (T. eblanae) and maturation (I. coindetii). Feeding rate of both species decreased with size, but the percentage of stomachs with food remains increased in maturing and mature females. Weight of prey captured was dependent on available prey sizes and, in small individuals, maximum prey weight was very close to the squid weight. Both squid species are mainly neritic nekto-benthic predators, but I. coindetii seems to have a broader and more pelagic diet.

In the sea, heterotrophic bacteria and other micro-organisms oxidize dissolved organic material. This process is important to the seasonal biological cycle of matter there because it is responsible for the return of an appreciable fraction of the inorganic nutrients (Andrews & Williams, 1971). It is also important in the process whereby the sea purifies itself of added dissolved organic pollutants: domestic and industrial wastes and spillages. These two processes, especially the latter, pose important and unanswered questions. One in particular is the behaviour of these heterotrophic populations when subjected to sudden increases in the concentration of an organic substrate. This will occur to some degree under natural conditions in sea water during or after a phytoplankton bloom and will occur to a considerable degree when pollutants are run into the sea.
