The present paper is a continuation of last year's work on the Euphausiidæ in the neighbourhood of Plymouth (Lebour, 1924), in which the early larval stages were described of Nyctiphanes Couchii, Meganyctiphanes norvegica and, less fully, those of Thysanoessa inermis and T. neglecta. These two last-named forms are reserved for a detailed description in another paper, only Nyctiphanes and Meganyctiphanes being dealt with here. The first paper described these as far as the last Calyptopis stages, and it was shown that they were much alike although perfectly distinct, especially as regards colour. The nauplii and metanauplii were easily distinguishable. The whole of the remaining life-history of Nyctiphanes Couchii has now been elucidated and also that of Meganyctiphanes norvegica, with the exception of a few late larval stages. The absence of these, however, does not materially affect our knowledge of its life-history.

The new species Halosphaera parkeae (Prasinophyceae) is described from material collected in the western English Channel. The microscopical structure of the outer wall of the non-motile phase is described and two types of punctation are demonstrated. A general account of the cytology of the mature non-motile phase and of the motile cell is given. Electron micrographs of the scales of the motile cell are compared with those of other species of the genus where known. Buoyancy, size and reproduction are discussed and a number of new taxonomic characters emphasized. The occurence in the same areas of a second type very similar but smaller in size is recorded and the authors have named this form Halosphaera parkeae forma minuta.

This investigation of the diet of 801 corkwing wrasse (Crenilabrus melops: Teleostei; Labridae) from Galway Bay and a sample of 51 corkwings from Dinard has shown that this species is primarily a carnivorous feeder, taking a varied diet with molluscs and crustaceans predominating. A gradual, size-related dietary shift was apparent, crustacean food being favoured by the younger, smaller fish and molluscan food by older, larger fish. A decrease in niche breadth indicated an increase in dietary specialization with increasing length. Little seasonal variation was observed in the consumption of the major food categories. Feeding intensity, however, was influenced by the sea-water temperature. Non-feeding fish were recorded only between November and March in Galway Bay, and approximately two-thirds of the population examined in February had empty guts. Feeding intensity of males was significantly lower than that of females during the breeding season.

Recruitment of the limpet Patella ulyssiponensis was investigated in relation to the presence of living crustose coralline algae (CCA) in rocky-shore habitats. Juvenile limpets (≤10 mm maximum shell length) were counted in CCA-present and CCA-absent habitats, on three shores in SW Portugal during summer 2007 and winter 2009. Furthermore, the settling response of laboratory-reared larvae of P. ulyssiponensis to CCA-covered substratum, and bare-rock, was examined. Across the intertidal zone, we found a clear association between the distribution and abundance of juveniles and the presence of CCA. Although the presence of CCA was not an absolute requisite for juvenile occurrence, null juvenile densities were mostly recorded in CCA-absent areas. The highest juvenile densities (maximum of 64 individuals in 15 × 15 cm) were consistently found in CCA-dominated habitats, namely steep wave-exposed areas at low-shore and rock-pools. The hypothesis of CCA-enhanced settlement was not supported, as settlement intensities of laboratory-reared larvae were similar between chips of rock encrusted by CCA and chips of bare-rock. From the overall number of settlers onto CCA-encrusted rock chips, 51% were found in tiny pits lacking CCA. This was the first study of the settlement patterns of larvae of the genus Patella using naturally occurring rocky substrata. These results are preliminary and should be confirmed with choice-experiments and improved monitoring of the position of settlers. We suggest that CCA plays a role in the recruitment of P. ulyssiponensis, potentially promoting survivorship of early benthic stages, but possibly not enhancing settlement.

Of the more than 800 Recent species of Anomalodesmata only 16 have been studied alive. The Septibranchia, comprising a number of carnivorous bivalve superfamilies, are no exception to this generalization and, until recently, no living member of this group has been studied since the 1980s. Collected from the shallow, shelf seabed off Brazil, Cardiomya cleryana is one of only a few species to have its morphology described in recent years and the first ever anomalodesmatan to be filmed alive. Important anatomical features such as a greatly extensible foot to secure itself in the sediment with a single byssal thread, exhalant siphon inter-tentacular projections and micro-papillae on the surface of the siphonal tentacles are described. Observations on the species’ behaviour have revealed a lifestyle hitherto not recorded for any septibranch, indeed any anomalodesmatan. The anchoring mechanism of C. cleryana using an extraordinarily long byssal thread is described for the first time. The life position of C. cleryana is at 45° to the sediment-water interface whereas other cuspidariids have been considered to orient themselves vertically. An anatomical comparison between Cardiomya and Bathyneaera has revealed close affinities. This study thus provides new insights into the morphology and behaviour of the Cuspidariidae.

Arcachon Bay was the last important shell culture area of the French Atlantic coast without a stock assessment of the accidentally introduced Crepidula fornicata (Gastropoda). Following a stratified sampling strategy, 205 stations were sampled with a dredge. The total biomass of C. fornicata was estimated at 155 tn (confidence limits: 72 tn) scattered on 2·4 km2, i.e. about 5% of the infralittoral area. This biomass is very low compared to other exploited shellfish sites. Amongst mean environmental parameters (such as bathymetry, temperature, salinity, sediment grain-size, anthropic activity), the major keyfactors differentiating Arcachon Bay from other French sites were searched to explain the differences in C. fornicata colonization pattern. It seems that the low biomass of C. fornicata, 30 y after its occurrence was first recorded in the bay, could be correlated to: (1) the scarcity of subtidal muddy sediments which are suitable for C. fornicata settlement; (2) the presence of large Zostera spp. beds on both intertidal and subtidal areas; and (3) the absence of bottom trawl fishing.  Growth, production and productivity (P/B) ratios were compared between five stations characterized by different hydrological and sediment parameters. Growth and productivity (0·3 y−1) were not affected by mean biomass suggesting a lack of population regulation by intraspecific competition.

Underwater television observations were made of mobile macrofauna inhabiting two parts of a sublittoral reef on the west coast of Scotland for 48 h periods in spring, summer, autumn and winter. Continuous occurrence profiles (mean hourly frequency of occurrence, %) were detailed for 12 species of fish (Chirolophis ascanii, Conger conger, Ctenolabrus rupestris, Lepadogaster candollei, Myoxocephalus scorpius, Pholis gunnellus, Pollachius pollachius, Raniceps raninus, Phrynorhombus regius, Zeugopterus punctatus, Thorogobius ephippiatus and Trisopterus minutus), ten crustacean species (Cancer pagurus, Carcinus maenas, Galathea strigosa, Homarus gammarus, Inachus spp., Munida rugosa, Necora puber, Brachyuran sp., Caridean sp. and Pagurid sp.) and four echinoderm species (Antedon bifida, Asterias rubens, Hemicia oculata and Solaster endeca). Rhythmic patterns of diel activity and/or occurrence were identified for several species. Chirolophis ascanii, Ctenolabrus rupestris, L. candollei, Myoxocephalus scorpius, Pholis gunnellus, Pollachius pollachius, Thorogobius ephippiatus, Trisopterus minutus and Munida rugosa were predominantly diurnal, but Ctenolabrus rupestris, Myoxocephalus scorpius and Trisopterus minutus also showed some evidence of crepuscular activity. Raniceps raninus activity was predominantly nocturnal but became continuous in summer. In other species (the topknots Phrynorhombus regius and Z. punctatus and the crustaceans Cancer pagurus and Homarus gammarus) identifiable occurrence patterns changed with season or site. The greatest number of fish species occurred in winter with Myoxocephalus scorpius, Pollachius pollachius and topknots (Phrynorhombus regius and Z. punctatus) showing greater occurrence/activity during spring and winter. Co-occurrence analysis was used to identify species interactions or avoidances.

The coastline of the Korean Peninsula is influenced by three major oceanographic ecoregions, including the estuarine Yellow Sea ecoregion on the west coast, the warmer and saline East China Sea ecoregion on the south coast, and the cold East Sea ecoregion on the east coast. The influence of these marine ecoregions on the distribution of intertidal barnacles has not been extensively studied. The present study examines the biogeography of thoracican barnacles from intertidal and shallow subtidal zones, along the coasts of Korea. Twenty-one species in seven families were identified, including three species of coral-associated barnacles. Species composition varied significantly in the three marine ecoregions. Multivariate analysis showed barnacle assemblages were significant among the three ecoregions, although there are large overlaps of clusters between the Yellow Sea and East China Sea ecoregions. The estuarine species, Fistulobalanus albicostatus, occurred mainly in the Yellow Sea ecoregion; warm-water species, Tetraclita japonica, and sponge inhabiting barnacles Euacasta dofleini were observed in the East China Sea ecoregion; and cold-water species, Balanus rostratus and Perforatus perforatus, were found in the East Sea ecoregion. Four invasive barnacle species were recorded and the European barnacle Perforatus perforatus expanded its range northward from its recorded distribution nine years earlier. The cold-water species, Chthamalus dalli and Semibalanus cariosus, previously recorded in the East Sea ecoregion, were absent in the present survey. A trend of increasing seawater temperatures in Korean waters may have a significant impact on the distribution of cold-water species and enhance the northward invasion of P. perforatus.

Oceanographical processes, such as upwelling, induce variations in nutrient availability in marine ecosystems, and evidence indicates that nutrient input can strongly influence the physiological activities, structure, and dynamics of marine communities. Intertidal organisms have long been considered ideal study units in which to quantify the relationship of physical variations and differential energy allocations in specimens that undergo environmental variations, such as observed with nutrient availability. In habitats with differential nutrient input (upwelling versus non-upwelling), both food availability (algae abundance) and seasonal gonadal and foot weight variations were determined in the keyhole limpet Fissurella crassa. Gonadal weight is used as a measure of reproduction allocation whereas foot weight is an indirect indicator of energy allocation towards survival. RNA:DNA ratio in limpets was used as an indicator of biosynthetic capability. Our results indicate that, in general, algae abundance, muscular foot weight, and gonadal weight were higher in upwelling sites during all seasons studied. The same result was found for RNA:DNA ratios. Energetic allocation in animals that inhabit intertidal upwelling habitats supported a constant allocation towards reproduction and soft tissues. In contrast, animals that inhabit non-upwelling habitats showed important energetic restrictions associated with higher water temperature and lower food availability. Our results clearly show that in the keyhole limpet F. crassa food availability is a more important determinant of an individual's condition than a physical variation such as environment temperature.

Total fat, carotenoids, and vitamin A were determined physicochemically in sixty-nine species and fifteen generic groups of pelagic marine copepods.

Vitamin A was definitely present in Euchirella curticauda and Gaetanus kruppi and possibly so in Gaetanus pileatus and in a sample of Gaetanus spp. No vitamin A activity for vitamin A-depleted rats was found in fractions from a lipid extract of 1854 g of Calanus finmarchicus.

The significance of these findings is considered in relation to the high vitamin A reserves in many fish preying upon pelagic copepods.

Nothing is known of the eggs and larvæ of Turritella communis and, except for the young shells which have already metamorphosed, those of Aporrhais pes-pelicani are also unknown. The following descriptions are therefore new, both molluscs having been kept in plunger-jars until they laid their eggs.

The relative contributions of the eye, pigmentation (melanophores), and gut contents to the lateral body areas of herring larvae, Clupea harengus L., were measured using a combination of photography and computer image analysis. There was a power relationship between body area and body length (exponent 2.62) which was similar to that of the eye area (exponent 2.57) whereas the pigmented area increased at a greater rate (exponent 4.41). The area of the full gut relative to body length increased at an intermediate rate (exponent 3.04). Melanophores dilated under the effects of anaesthetic, increasing the projected pigment area of herring larvae by an average of 94% after 10 minutes of anaesthesia. These results are discussed in relation to the vulnerability of herring larvae to visual predation.

During our studies of the reproductive cycles in limpets (family Acmaeidae) we have been confronted by the lack of a method to determine sex without killing the animals. Previous studies have relied upon dissection or histological sectioning to determine sex. This note describes a technique which allows the determination of sex in patellacean limpets without killing the animal.

The tools needed are a syringe (1 cc) with a hypodermic needle (we have found that a 26 gauge, 16 mm needle works well with specimens larger than 10 mm in length), and a glass microscope slide. After removing the limpet from the substratum the shell is held with the aperture down. As the animal extends its foot downward it exposes and stretches the sides of the body wall. When the posterior portion of the body wall is fully exposed the needle is inserted approximately one third of the way up the body wall towards the shell attachment muscle. The orientation of the needle should be in line with the plane of the aperture. Penetration of the gonad can be felt by a ‘breaking through’ or sudden decrease in resistance to the progress of the needle. Care should be taken to avoid penetrating further than necessary because other organs can be easily damaged. Drawing the sample requires more force and time (approximately 10 s) than one would expect. When withdrawing the needle constant tension on the syringe plunger is necessary to keep the sample in the needle. The contents of the needle are then emptied on to the glass slide.

1. Artificial fertilisations of Notomastus latericeus Sars were made and the larvæ reared.

2. The two-day old trochosphere is provided with a large central mass of yolk. It has a broad prototroch, a telotroch, a neurotroch and an apical tuft. It swims rapidly.

3. Development consists in the appearance of trunk segments; The most anterior of these is the achætous peristomium. Those following acquire neuro- and notopodial chætæ.

4. At an age of about ten days the cilia are gradually lost. The larva then has about five chætigerous segments, the first three bearing bristles, the last two hooded hooks.

5. The young worms lived for some twelve days after metamorphosis and by that time had seven clætigerous segments. Only a little of the yolk still remained. The worms possessed a protrusible introvert and were feeding on diatoms.

6. The larva apart from its strong prototroch and rapidity of swimming does not exhibit any special structural adaptations to pelagic life, such as are found in some other Polychæte larvæ. In comparison with Capitella it has fewer segments when it metamorphoses.

The ophiuroid, Ophiocomina nigra, displays a colour variation ranging from black to yellow-orange. The pigment responsible for the dark colours has been studied histochemically and by means of chemical techniques applied to extracts. The solubility, oxidation-reduction, fluorescence and other chemical properties of this pigment indicate that it is a true melanin. The visible colour of die melanin depends upon its oxidation state in the integument. Fully oxidized pigment is dark brown; partially reduced pigment is fawn coloured.

Males of the onychoteuthid squid Moroteuthis ingens implant spermatophores directly into a variety of internal and external tissues of the female, based on the examination of 14 individuals collected south of Tasmania, Australia. Furthermore, the capture of a pair of mating individuals suggests that ‘jaw locking’ reminiscent of cichlid fish may be a behaviour associated with courtship and mating.

Samples of twelve broods of oyster larvae were subjected to a standard laboratory rearing technique while other samples were assayed for glycogen. The glycogen reserves of the larvae at liberation lay between 13·4 and 15·4% of the dry organic matter. No correlation was observed between the glycogen reserve and either the size of the larvae at liberation or the yield of spat in the rearing experiments

Series of sequences of SEM micrographs are presented to elucidate species-specific shell features in larval and post-larval stages of four Ostreidae (Bivalvia) species (Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg), C. virginica (Gmelin), Ostrea edulis L., and O. equestris Say). The diagnostic characters, including hinge structure, shell shape, and the dimensions of the prodissoconch, are identified and summarized in a key at both generic and species levels. In larval Crassostrea the skewed, backwards-pointed umboned shells with two hinge teeth on each side of the provinculum are significantly different from the round, dorsally-directed umboned shell with fewer, remarkably asymmetric teeth of larval Ostrea.In C. gigas the dimensions of the provinculum are longer and narrower (56x10 µrn) than those of C. virginica (50x14 µm); the lengths of prodissoconch I and the provinculum are greater in O. edulis (168 µm and 86 µm, respectively) than in O. equestris (120 µm and 74 µm, respectively). The present study suggests that precise quantitative measurements are needed for differentiation of the studied congeneric oyster species.

Phosphorus in plankton has been determined by digestion with sulphuric acid and perhydrol followed by colorimetric determination.

Nitrogen has been readily determined by the micro-Kjeldahl method of Parnas and Wagner.

Re-examination of the original and subsequent data from Secchi disc studies leads to a revised constant in the light attenuation formula applicable to general field-work.

In theory, the depth at which a Secchi disc disappears from an observer's sight, Ds, is inversely proportional to the sum of attenuation coefficients for diffuse and collimated photopic light (Tyler, 1968). By definition, photopic light is measured by a sensor with the same spectral response curve as the normal human eye. In practice, the usefulness of the theoretical equation is restricted. More commonly, a simple empirically derived formula is used to estimate the attenuation coefficient for diffuse downwelling light, k, directly from Ds. Poole & Atkins (1929), in their pioneering work on light penetration in the sea, derived the relationship k × Ds – 17 for water in the English Channel. This formula is used extensively by workers who are unable to measure k directly and it is given regularly in oceanography and marine biology texts. More recently, a number of investigators have proposed alternative equations relating k to Ds in different regional seas (Table 1). However, Idso & Gilbert (1974) have fitted data of some of these authors, together with measurements of their own, to the original Poole and Atkins formula with good correlation. They suggest that k × Ds = 1.7 is a universal approximation for all natural waters. In view of the continuing importance of the Secchi disc as a measure of underwater light for primary production calculations and other studies, a universal formula is certainly desirable. However, re-examination of the Poole & Atkins measurements has revealed an error in the method of calculation of k.
