We show how to use Jantzen’s sum formula for Weyl modules to prove semisimplicity criteria for endomorphism algebras of $\mathbf{U}_{q}$-tilting modules (for any field $\mathbb{K}$ and any parameter $q\in \mathbb{K}-\{0,-1\}$). As an application, we recover the semisimplicity criteria for the Hecke algebras of types $\mathbf{A}$ and $\mathbf{B}$, the walled Brauer algebras and the Brauer algebras from our more general approach.

In this paper we prove several random fixed point theorems for multifunctions with a stochastic domain. Then those techniques are used to establish the existence of solutions for random differential inclusions. A useful tool in this process is a stochastic version of the Tietze extension theorems that we prove. Finally we present a stochastic version of the Riesz representation theorem for Hilbert spaces.

In this paper a certain group with the third-Engel condition, that is a member of the variety defined by1 will be presented. Reasons for which its properties may be of interest are advanced in the present section.

The concept of integrals of fractional order of a function f, defined by if Reα > 0, can be extended to generalised functions in the framework of the theory of convolution of distributions. The resulting theory [2, Chap. I §5.5] is very satisfactory for many purposes but there are circumstances in which it is not suitable. Such circumstances arise in particular if it is necessary to multiply, before or after integratrion, by non-integral powers of the variable. Pointwise multiplication by fractional powers of the independent variable does not make sense in the theory of distributions.

Let P denote the set of prime numbers, and let P(n) denote the largest prime factor of an integer n > 1. We show that, for every real number , there exists a constant c(η) > 1 such that for every integer a ≠ 0, the set has relative asymptotic density one in the set of all prime numbers. Moreover, in the range , one can take c(η) = 1+ε for any fixed ε > 0. In particular, our results imply that for every real number 0.486 ≤ b.thetav; ≤ 0.531, the relation P(q − a) ≍ qθ holds for infinitely many primes q. We use this result to derive a lower bound on the number of distinct prime divisor of the value of the Carmichael function taken on a product of shifted primes. Finally, we study iterates of the map q ↦ P(q - a) for a > 0, and show that for infinitely many primes q, this map can be iterated at least (log logq)1+o(1) times before it terminates.

A pair of symmetric dual multiobjective fractional programming problems is formulated and appropriate duality theorems are established.

If G is the special orthogonal group O+(V) of a quadratic space V over a finite field of characteristic p, and r is a positive integer, we determine the abelian p-subgroups of largest order in G whose fixed subspaces in V have dimension at least r. In particular, we determine the abelian subgroups of largest order in a Sylow p-subgroup of G, extending some results obtained with different methods by Barry (1979).

We prove that factor groups of cartesian powers of finite non-abelian simple groups cannot be countably infinite. Thisis not our main result, but it had been our original aim. The proof is based on a similar fact concerning σ-complete Boolean algebras, and on a representation of certain subcartesian powers of a group in its group ring over a Boolean ring. This representation, to which we give the name “Boolean power”, will be our central theme, and we begin with it.

We give a complete picture of the interaction between the Koszul and Ringel dualities for graded standardly stratified algebras (in the sense of Cline, Parshall and Scott) admitting linear tilting (co)resolutions of standard and proper costandard modules. We single out a certain class of graded standardly stratified algebras, imposing the condition that standard filtrations of projective modules are finite, and develop a tilting theory for such algebras. Under the assumption on existence of linear tilting (co)resolutions we show that algebras from this class are Koszul, that both the Ringel and Koszul duals belong to the same class, and that these two dualities on this class commute.

This paper reports on a facility of the ANU NQ program for computation of nilpotent groups that satisfy an Engel-n identity. The relevant details of the algorithm are presented together with results on Engel-n groups for moderate values of n.

The paper is concerned with the determination of the degree of convergence of a sequence of linear operators connected with the Fourier series of a function of class Lp (p > 1) to that function and some inverse results in relating the convergence to the classes of functions. In certain cases one can obtain the saturation results too. In all cases Lp norm is used.

This paper continues the investigation of semigroup constructions motivated by applications in data mining. We give a complete description of the error-correcting capabilities of a large family of clusterers based on Rees matrix semigroups well known in semigroup theory. This result strengthens and complements previous formulas recently obtained in the literature. Examples show that our theorems do not generalize to other classes of semigroups.

If G is the unitary group U(V) or the symplectic group Sp(V) of a vector space V over a finite field of characteristic p, and r is a positive integer, we determine the abelian p-subgroups of largest order in G whose fixed subspaces in V have dimension at least r, with the restriction that we assume p ≠ 2 in the symplectic case. In particular, we determine the abelian subgroups of largest order in a Sylow p-subgroup of G. Our results complement earlier work on general linear and orthogonal groups.

This note deals with some properties of algebraic number fields generated by numbers having all their conjugates on a circle. In particular, it is shown that an algebraic number field is a CM-field if and only if it is generated over the rationals by an element (not equal to ±1) whose conjugate all lie on the unit circle.

A recent result of Rogozin on the relative stability of a distribution function is extended, by giving equivalences for relative stability in terms of truncated moments of the distribution and in terms of the real and imaginary parts of the characteristic function. As an application, the known results on centering distributions in the domain of attraction of a stable law are extended to the case of stochastically compact distributions.

This paper is concerned with a class of singular elliptic partial differential equations related to the operator of Weinstein's generalized axially symmetric potential theory (GASPT) [1, 2] which has numerous applications.

In this paper we investigate finite metabelian p-groups from the point of view of varieties and identical relations. In other words we shall be interested in those properties of such groups which are preserved under the operations of fonning direct products, taking subgroups and taking factor groups. Ideally one would like to characterize such properties in terms of numerical invariants and with the sole restriction that the p-group in question have class less than p we accomplish this.

The ultraspherical polynomial (x) of degree n and order λ is defined by for n = 0, 1, 2, …. Of these polynomials, the most commonly used are the Chebyshev polynomials Tn(x) of the first kind, corresponding to λ = 0; the Legendre polynomials Pn(x) for which λ = ½; and the Chebyshev polynomials Un(x) of the second kind (λ = 1). Let A ∈ ℒ(Cn) and A1, A2 be the unique Hermitian operators such that A = A1 + i A2. The paper is concerned with the differential structure of the numerical range map nA: x ↦ ((A1x, x), (A1x, x)) and its connection with certain natural subsets of the numerical range W(A) of A. We completely characterize the various sets of critical and regular points of the map nA as well as their respective images within W(A). In particular, we show that the plane algebraic curves introduced by R. Kippenhahn appear naturally in this context. They basically coincide with the image of the critical points of nA.
