Let G be a locally compact Abelian Hausdorff group (abbreviated LCA group); let X be its character group and dx, dx be the elements of the normalised Haar measures on G and X respectively. If 1 < p, q < ∞, and Lp(G) and Lq(G) are the usual Lebesgue spaces, of index p and q respectively, with respect to dx, a multiplier of type (p, q) is defined as a bounded linear operator T from Lp(G) to Lq(G) which commutes with translations, i.e. τxT = Tτx for all x ∈ G, where τxf(y) = f(x+y). The space of multipliers of type (p, q) will be denoted by Lqp. Already, much attention has been devoted to this important class of operators (see, for example, [3], [4], [7]).

It is the aim of this paper to introduce a new concept relating various subgroups of the automorphism group of a graph to corresponding subgraphs. Throughout g will denote a (Michigan) graph on a vertex set V(¦V¦ =n) and Γ(g)=G will be the automorphism group of G considered as a permutation group on V.En, Cn, Dn and Sn are the identity, cyclic, dihedral, and symmetric groups acting on a set of size n, while Sp(q) is the permutation group of pq objects which is isomorphic to Sp but is q-fold in the sense that the objects are permuted q at a time [6]. H ≦ G means that H is a subgroup of G. Other group concepts can be found in Wielandt [7]. The graphs G1 ∪ G2, G1 + G2, G1 × G2, and G1[G2] along with their corresponding groups are as defined in, for example, Harary [4]. Finally we use Kn for the complete graph on n vertices.

It is known that all locally flat projective planes in S4 have homeomorphic normal disk bundles. In this paper we investigate the homeomorphisms of Q3 (= boundary of the normal disk bundle) on to itself. We show that a homeomorphisms of Q3 onto itself is determined, up to isotopy, by the outerautomorphism of π1(Q3) that it induces. Since Q3 is an irreducible, not sufficiently large 3-manifold with finite fundamental group this characterization is interesting in its own right. The characterization of homeomorphisms is then used to study certain questions about embeddings of the projective plane in S4. One result is that there are at most two distinct projective planes in S4 with a given complement.

A composite integer N is said to be a strong pseudoprime for the base C if with N – 1 = 2sd, (2, d) = 1 either Cd = 1, or C2r ≡ 1 (mod N) some r, 0 ≤ r < s. It is shown that every arithmetic progression ax+b (x = 0,1, …) where a, b are relatively prime integers contains an infinite number of odd strong pseudoprimes for each base C ≤ 2.

We consider a single server queueing system in which customers arrive at the instants t0, t1, …, tm, …. We write τm = tm+1 − tm, m ≧ 0. There is a single server with distribution of service times B(x) given by where k is an integer not less than unity.

For totally real algebraic integers x of degree D(x), we examine the stucture of the set of values M(x)1D(x). where M(x) is the measure of x. We find a small limit point λ of this set, and show that the set is everywhere dense in (λ x).

Let M=G/K be a generalized flag manifold, that is, an adjoint orbit of a compact, connected and semisimple Lie group G. We use a variational approach to find non-Kähler homogeneous Einstein metrics for flag manifolds with two isotropy summands. We also determine the nature of these Einstein metrics as critical points of the scalar curvature functional under fixed volume.

We show that a bounded linear operator on a uniformly convex space may be perturbed by a compact operator of arbitrarily small norm to yield an operator which attains its numerical radius.

In this paper we introduce and study the notion of dual continuous (d–continuous) modules. A decomposition theorem for a d–continuous module is proved; this generalizes all known decomposition theorems for quasi-projective modules. Besides we study the structure of d–continuous modules over some special types of rings.

A system or family (Aγ: γ∈ N) of sets Aγ, indexed by the elements of a set N, is called an (a, b)-system if ¦N¦ = a and ¦Aγ¦ = b for γ ∈ N. Expressions such as “(a, <b)-system” are self-explanatory. The system (Aγ: γ∈N) is called a δ-system [1] if Aμ∩Aγ = Ap ∩ Aσ whenever μ, γ, ρ, σ ∈ N; μ≠ γ; ρ ≠ σ. If we want to indicate the cardinality ¦N¦ of the index set N then we speak of a δ(¦N¦) system. In [1] conditions on cardinals a, b, c were obtained which imply that every (a, b)-system contains a δ(c)-subsystem. In [2], for every choice of cardinals b, c such that the least cardinal a = fδ(b, c) was determined which has the property that every (a, < b)-system contains a δ(c)-subsystem.

The recent resurgence of interest in the groups introduced in Conway (1967), together with their analogues, is recorded in Johnson, Wamsley and Wright(to appear).

We study the stochastic cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (SNLS) with an additive noise on the one-dimensional torus. In particular, we prove local well-posedness of the (renormalized) SNLS when the noise is almost space–time white noise. We also discuss a notion of criticality in this stochastic context, comparing the situation with the stochastic cubic heat equation (also known as the stochastic quantization equation).

It is shown that a unital lattice-ordered ring in which the square of every element is positive is embeddable in a product of totally ordered rings provided it is archimedean, semiperfect, or π-regular. Also, some canonical examples of unital l-domains with squares positive that are not totally ordered are discussed.

The Birkhoff orthogonality has been recently intensively studied in connection with the geometry of Banach spaces and operator theory. The main aim of this paper is to characterize the Birkhoff orthogonality in ${\mathcal{L}}(X;Y)$ under the assumption that ${\mathcal{K}}(X;Y)$ is an $M$-ideal in ${\mathcal{L}}(X;Y)$. Moreover, we survey the known results, as well as giving some new and more general ones. Furthermore, we characterize an approximate Birkhoff orthogonality in ${\mathcal{K}}(X;Y)$.

Let (Хζ,λ) be a σ-finite measure space, and let ϕ be a non-singular measurable transformation from X into itself. Then a composition transformation Cϕ on L2(λ) is defined by Cϕf = f ∘ ϕ. If Cϕ is a bounded operator, then it is called a composition operator. The space L2(λ) is said to admit compact composition operators if there exists a ϕ such that Cϕ is compact. This note is a report on the spaces which admit or which do not admit compact composition operators.

Lef: G → G be a continuous map of a graph and let d(A) denote the derived set (or limit points) of A ⊂ G. We prove that d(Ω(f)) ⊂ λ (f) and the depth of f is at most three. We also prove that if f is piecewise monotone or has zero topological entropy, then the depth of f is at most two. Furthermore, we obtain some results on the topological structure of Ω(f).

An inverse semigroup S is called E-unitary if the equations ea = e = e2 together imply a2 = a. In a previous paper the author showed that every inverse semigroup is an idempotent separating homomorphic image of an E-unitary inverse semigroup. The main question considered in this paper is the following. Given an inverse semigroup S give a method for constructing E-unitary inverse semigroups P and idempotent separating homomorphisms φ P → S in such a way that the structure of P as a P-semigroup is evident.

For any bounded linear operator A in a Banach space, two generalized condition numbers, k(A) and k(A) are defined in this paper. These condition numbers may be applied to the perturbation analysis for the solution of ill-posed differential equations and bounded linear operator equations in infinite dimensional Banach spaces. Different expressions for the two generalized condition numbers are discussed in this paper and applied to the perturbation analysis of the operator equation.

Pfaffian graphs are those which can be oriented so that the 1-factors have equal sign, as calculated according to the prescription of Kasteleyn. We consider various operations on graphs and examine their effect on the Pfaffian property. We show that the study of Pfaffian graphs may be reduced to the case of subcubic graphs (graphs in which no vertex has degree greater than 3) or bricks (3-connected bicritical graphs).
