The near-complete skull of the Giant Rat-kangaroo Ekaltadeta ima is described from a middle Miocene deposit at Riversleigh, north western Queensland. Surprisingly, the results of phylogenetic analysis indicate no special relationship with the only other hypsiprymnodontids for which substantial cranial material is known (Hypsiprymnodon moschatus, H. bartholomaii), but within Macropodoidea, a number of derived features present in E. ima are found only in another extinct taxon, the Balbarinae. Recent studies have suggested that Balbarinae may not represent a basal macropodid clade as thought by most previous authors and furthermore that the subfamily is perhaps distinct from all other kangaroos. In light of these findings an interesting possibility is noted, i.e., that Propleopinae and Balbarinae may represent a monophyletic clade to the exclusion of all other taxa. Preliminary results of investigation into dietary habitus indicate that Propleopinae represents a radiation of medium- to large-sized omnivorous kangaroos. Within this clade it is reiterated that a tendency toward carnivory might be inferred from the relative importance of high amplitude vertical shearing versus horizontal shearing and/or crushing elements in the dentition.

Pywackia baileyi Landing in Landing et al., 2010, from the upper Cambrian Yudachica Member of Oaxaca State, southern Mexico, consists of small, phosphatic, proximally tapering cylindrical rods covered by shallow polygonal calices. The bryozoan-like morphology of this fossil prompted its interpretation as the first bryozoan known from the Cambrian. However, restudy of some of the original material, employing scanning electron microscopy for the first time, questions the assignment of Pywackia to the Bryozoa. Striking similarities between Pywackia and the modern pennatulacean octocoral Lituaria lead to an alternative hypothesis interpreting Pywackia an early fossil octocoral. While Pywackia is probably not a true pennatulacean, a group with a definitive fossil record stretching back only to the Late Cretaceous, it can be envisaged as having had a similar skeletal structure and ecology to Lituaria, the rods representing mineralized axes of tiny colonies that lived with their proximal ends buried in the sediment and distal ends covered by feeding polyps. Landing et al. (2010) considered the phosphatic composition of Pywackia specimens to be the result of diagenetic replacement, but the evidence is equivocal. If Pywackia had a primary phosphatic skeleton, this would support the hypothesized existence of phosphatic biomineralization early in the evolutionary history of Cnidaria, as well as providing further evidence that Pywackia is not a bryozoan.

The family Remingtonocetidae is a basal family of Eocene cetaceans only known from near shore marine environments of India and Pakistan. We describe a new skull for Remingtonocetus harudiensis which elucidates the anatomy and functional morphology of the head and provides new details on cranial cavity and nasopharyngeal region. We suggest that Remingtonocetus was an ambush predator that hunted from a perch on the ocean floor, and that hearing was its most important sense. We speculate that the greatly elongated rostrum is an adaptation for water retention because these are some of the earliest whales living in seawater.

Protaspides and later growth stages are described and discussed for the Ordovician trinucleid trilobite Cryptolithus tesselatus Green and the raphiophorid Lonchodomas chaziensis Shaw. A small triangular rostral plate is described for a single protaspid instar in both Cryptolithus and Lonchodomas. The presence of this small sclerite in the ontogeny of these taxa supports the origin of the Trinucleoidea from the Ptychopariida through reduction in and then fusion or loss of the rostral plate. Earlier and later growth stages have fused ventral sclerites, with no signs of connective sutures. All members of the Trinucleoidea with known ontogenies share similar small, ovoid asaphoid protaspides, with distinct axes and varying numbers of sharp, conical to subtubular, submarginal spines on the dorsal exoskeleton and marginal spines on the hypostome. Two protaspid instars are identified in both Cryptolithus and Lonchodomas, sharing many characters that indicate homologous levels of development. A single origin for the median suture of the Asaphida is supported, with an anterior rostellum as its precursor.

We present a detailed morphological description of the type-locality cranial material of Theriosuchus sympiestodon Martin, Rabi, and Csiki, 2010 from the Maastrichtian Densuş-Ciula Formation of the Haţeg Basin, Romania together with new material of isolated cranial elements and teeth from various sites of the same general area. The recognition of several individuals of distinct sizes allows for an assessment of ontogenetic variation in this taxon. New material, consisting of isolated teeth and an incomplete maxilla with in situ teeth, coming from various late Campanian/early Maastrichtian sites in southern France is referable to ?Theriosuchus sp. and hints to a rare but widespread distribution of Theriosuchus in the Late Cretaceous European archipelago.

Vase-shaped microfossils (VSMs) occur in dolomitic extraclasts of indeterminate provenance within the basal diamictite of the Neoproterozoic Urucum Formation (Jacadigo Group) of west-central Brazil, having an age constrained between 889±44 Ma (K-Ar; basement rocks) and 587±7 Ma (40Ar/39Ar age of early metamorphic cryptomelane in overlying manganese ore). Early isopachous carbonate cement entombed these VSMs, preserving rare direct evidence of original wall composition that is carbonaceous (now kerogenous) in practically all specimens. Some tests are siliceous or composed of a quartz-kerogen mixture; secondary replacement explains some features of these tests, but original biomineralization seems more likely for others. This interpretation, coupled with test morphology, suggests affinity to arcellinid testate amoebae. Five VSM taxa are recognized in the deposit: Cycliocyrillium simplex Porter, Meisterfeld, and Knoll, 2003, and C. torquata Porter, Meisterfeld, and Knoll, 2003, originally described in the Chuar Group (USA), and three new monospecific genera—Palaeoamphora urucumense n. gen. n. sp., Limeta lageniformis n. gen. n. sp., and Taruma rata n. gen. n. sp. Most of the taxonomically important characteristics of these VSMs occur also in extant testate amoebae, but the combinations of some characters, such as organic-walled tests having exceptionally long necks that exhibit terminal apertures (L. lageniformis n. gen. n. sp.), are evidently novel additions to the known diversity of Neoproterozoic VSMs. Evidence of glacially influenced deposition in the conformably overlying Santa Cruz Formation may indicate that the Urucum Formation slightly preceded or was penecontemporaneous with a major Neoproterozoic glaciation, although the VSM-hosting extraclasts must be older, possibly rivaling the age of the testate amoebae of the Chichkan Formation (766±7 Ma) that are currently regarded as the oldest record of protists in the geological record.

A large (maximum length 80 mm), tubular, corset-like problematic fossil from the early Cambrian (Cambrian Series 2, Stage 3) Sirius Passet Lagerstätte of North Greenland is interpreted as the lorica of an ancestral loriciferan. in addition to the double circlet of 7 plates composing the lorica, Sirilorica carlsbergi new genus, new species also preserves up to six multicuspidate cuticular denticles that are similar in shape to the pharyngeal teeth of priapulid worms, although their location is suggestive of scalids. Whilst traditionally placed as a sister group of priapulid worms within Vinctiplicata (Scalidophora), recent molecular sequence data suggest that loriciferans might be more closely related to nematomorphs. the limited morphological information available from Sirilorica is consistent with this interpretation, placing the Sirius Passet fossil within the total-group of Loricifera, within the Loricifera + Nematomorpha clade.

Metazoans (multicellular animals) evolved during the Ediacaran Period as shown by the record of their imprints, carbonaceous compressions, trace fossils, and organic bodies and skeletal fossils. Initial evolutionary experiments produced unusual bodies that are poorly understood or conceived of as non-metazoan. It is accepted that sponges, ctenophorans, cnidarians, placozoans, and bilaterians were members of the Ediacaran fauna, many of which have uncertain affinities. The fossil Sabellidites cambriensis Yanishevsky, 1926, derived from the terminal Ediacaran strata, is the earliest known organically preserved animal that belonged to a newly evolving fauna, which replaced the Ediacara-type metazoans. Morphologically simple soft-bodied tubular fossils, such as S. cambriensis, and biomineralized, as contemporaneous Sinotubulites sp., are not easy to recognize phylogenetically because many unrelated organisms developed encasing tubes independently. Therefore, in addition to morphologic information, evidence derived from the microstructure of the organic wall and its biochemistry may be vital to resolving fossil origins and phylogenetic relationships. Here we present morphological, microstructural and biogeochemical studies on S. cambriensis using various microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, which provide new evidence that supports its siboglinid, annelidan affinity. The late Ediacaran age of Sabellidites fossil constrains the minimum age of siboglinids and the timing of the divergence of including them annelids by fossil record and this could be tested using molecular clock estimates. The fine microstructure of the organic tube in Sabellidites is multi-layered and has discrete layers composed of differently orientated and perfectly shaped fibers embedded in an amorphous matrix. The highly ordered and specific pattern of fiber alignment (i.e., the texture of organic matter) is similar to that of representatives of the family Siboglinidae. The biogeochemistry of the organic matter that comprised the tube, which was inferred from its properties, composition, and microstructure, is consistent with chitin and proteins as in siboglinids.

The biostratigraphy of the upper part of the Mississippian Lower Limestone Formation in the Midland Valley, Scotland is revised using foraminiferal assemblages. This formation was previously assigned exclusively to the upper part of the Brigantian Substage (upper Cf6δ, P2 or latest Visean), whereas the succeeding Limestone Coal Formation (barren of foraminifers and conodonts) was assigned to the Pendleian Substage (lower Cf7, E1 or early Serpukhovian). The foraminifers, in particular those recorded from the Second Hosie and Top Hosie limestones and their lateral equivalents (Anvil and MacDonald limestones), are comparable to Serpukhovian assemblages from the Ukraine and Russia. Consequently, the Visean/Serpukhovian stage boundary is repositioned at the base of the Second Hosie Limestone. This assignment of the Second Hosie Limestone to the Pendleian is reinforced by the first occurrence of the ammonoid Emstites (Cravenoceras), although it occurs 1 m below the Top Hosie Limestone. Pendleian foraminiferal assemblages from northern England, its geographically closest equivalent, are similar but not well enough known for a detailed comparison. A few similarities are found between the foraminiferal assemblages from the Midland Valley and those from southwest Spain and North African basins. Faunas from the Second and Top Hosie limestones and their lateral equivalents allow us to propose an assemblage zone, valid for regional correlations within the British Isles, and the faunas can be potentially used as Serpukhovian markers for western Paleotethyan basins. Two new genera and species are described, Praeplectostaffella anvilensis n. gen. n. sp. and Praeostaffellina macdonaldensis n. gen. n. sp., and two new species, Tubispirodiscus hosiensis n. sp. and Euxinita pendleiensis n. sp.

Stomatopods (mantis shrimps) are important predators in Recent tropical shallow-water communities. Despite a long geological history, they are poorly preserved as fossils, and traces of their predation have never been identified from the fossil record. Here we report on Plio-Pleistocene gastropods (mostly Strombus) from Florida with distinctive holes “punched” into their body whorls. The similarity of these holes to holes punched into live gastropods by Gonadactylus implicates gonodactyloid stomatopods as the predators that made them. Recent gonodactyloids break gastropod shells as thick and thicker than those of the Plio-Pleistocene strombids that were punched. Because our data underestimate the incidence of stomatopod predation, the frequency of holes in these strombids (8–13 percent) suggests that stomatopod predation may be of considerable importance in the ecological and evolutionary history of tropical benthic assemblages.

Naraoiids, defined as lightly sclerotized arthropods with a dimidiate tergum of two sclerites separated by a single transverse articulation, have been found in the Cambrian and Silurian. During the Cambrian they had a wide distribution coinciding with trilobite realms. This pattern may be related to the breakup of a Neoproterozoic supercontinent, probably Pannotia, which implies that naraoiids originated before the Cambrian “explosion.” Based on new observations on the original material from the Burgess Shale (Middle Cambrian, British Columbia), Naraoia halia is reconsidered as a valid species. The validity is further confirmed by a new record of the occurrence of this species in the Chengjiang Lagerstätte (Lower Cambrian, China). In addition, some structures of N. compacta of the Burgess Shale have been reinterpreted. Two more naraoiid species are redescribed in detail from the Chengjiang Lagerstätte on the basis of more than 1,000 well-preserved specimens. Naraoia spinosa shows dimorphism and Misszhouia longicaudata exhibits geographical variation in the overall shape of the dorsal exoskeleton. Naraoiids may have a protaspis-like larva, but the previously assigned protaspis has proven to be a separate taxon, Primicaris. In dorsal view, naraoiids resemble a giant “degree 0” meraspis (i.e., without thorax), and could have originated from different heterochronic processes, neoteny or hypermorphosis. Naraoiids are generally accepted as vagrant benthos. A predatory/scavenging life mode is supported by functional morphology and recent analogues. A healed injury in M. longicaudata suggests that they could be the prey of larger predators, most likely anomalocaridids. We suggest that differences in exopod composition might represent evolutionary changes through the Early–Middle Cambrian. The monophyly of the Naraoiidae is not firmly established. Similarity to liwiids, supposed to be the close relatives of naraoiids, is limited to overall shape. We exclude naraoiids from the Trilobita, though there do exist a number of similarities between them.

The cranial anatomy of the Deseadan species Medistylus dorsatus (Ameghino, 1903) is described based on new and complete material from Cabeza Blanca (Chubut, Argentina). Medistylus is the largest of the Pachyrukhinae and the specimen described here is probably the best-preserved pachyrukhine skull known in the Paleogene of South America. Previously, the validity of the species and its phylogenetic affinities with Interatheriidae (Notoungulata, Typotheria) were ambiguous and not conclusive. The syntypes, now reported lost, were isolated teeth poorly described by Ameghino in 1903. This almost complete skull with teeth provides more diagnostic features in order to complete the knowledge of genus. Details about cranial and dental morphology allow the reassessment of Medistylus dorsatus and its inclusion within the subfamily Pachyrukhinae (Hegetotheriidae, Notoungulata). Its cranial and dental specializations and the apparent sympatry with its close relatives Prosotherium garzoni Ameghino, 1897 and Propachyrucos smithwoodwardi Ameghino, 1897 all imply a narrow niche partitioning among the Pachyrukhinae during the Deseadan (late Oligocene). The occurrence of three euhypsodont genera of Pachyrukhinae in the Deseadan of Patagonia reflects the major radiation of the rodentlike ungulates in the Cenozoic of South America and suggests a great paleoenvironmental difference between the late Oligocene faunas of Patagonia and those from Bolivia and Uruguay, where they did not live.

Yarala burchfieldi n. gen. and sp. is described from Oligo-Miocene deposits of Riversleigh Station, northwestern Queensland. Although the smallest and most plesiomorphic bandicoot known, it shares unique synapomorphies with other peramelemorphs, such as the posteriorly orientated preparacrista on M2, posterolingual location of the hypoconulids, and the buccal position of the centrocrista. However, Y. burchfieldi lacks synapomorphies that would unambiguously allow it to be placed in any of the modern families as currently understood. In its plesiomorphic features, Y. burchfieldi provides a structural link between peramelemorphs and dasyuromorphs and appears to be a descendant of an annectant group that separated long prior to the origin of “typical” bandicoots. This species is present in many sites within the Riversleigh area. It possibly filled an insectivorous-carnivorous niche presently occupied by small dasyurids that are relatively more abundant today than they were when the Riversleigh deposits accumulated.

Tremadocian onlap is recorded by the Tribes Hill Formation. The formation is a lower Lower Ordovician (upper conodont Fauna B Interval(?)-Rossodus manitouensis Zone) depositional sequence that unconformably overlies the Upper Cambrian Little Falls Formation.

Depositional environments and stratigraphy indicate that the Tribes Hill was deposited on a wave-, not tide-, dominated shelf and that a uniform, “layer-cake” stratigraphy is present. The deepening-shoaling sequence of the Tribes Hill includes the: 1) Sprakers Member (new; peritidal carbonate and overlying tempestite limestone and shale); 2) Van Wie Member (new; subtidal shale and limestone); 3) Wolf Hollow Member (revised; massive carbonates with thrombolitic cap); and 4) Canyon Road Member (new; glauconitic limestone and overlying evaporitic dolostone). The shoaling half-cycle of the Tribes Hill is older than a shoaling event in western Newfoundland, and suggests epeirogenic factors in earliest Ordovician sea-level change in east Laurentia. Conodont and trilobite biofacies track lithofacies, and Rossodus manitouensis Zone conodonts and Bellefontia Biofacies trilobites appear in the distal, middle Tribes Hill Formation.

Twenty-four conodont species are illustrated. Ansella? protoserrata new species, Iapetognathus sprakersi new species, Leukorhinion ambonodes new genus and species, and Laurentoscandodus new genus are described.

A Recent sinusoidal trail made by a biting midge (family Ceratopogonidae, genus ?Bezzia) moving on the surface of wet mud along the edge of a freshwater pond has been observed. The trail is similar to the trace fossil Cochlichnus Hitchcock, 1858. The wave length, wave amplitude, and overall form and shape of this modern trail compares favorably to Eocene wave-like trails attributed to nematodes. Consequently, a ceratopogonid larva is believed responsible for at least some of those fossil trails.

The Emu Bay Shale Konservat-Lagerstätte (Cambrian Series 2, Stage 4) on Kangaroo Island, South Australia, is the source of two new non-biomineralized artiopodan arthropods. Squamacula buckorum n. sp. is the first record outside of China of a genus otherwise known only from its type species, S. clypeata, from the Chengjiang biota. The Australian species displays the long cephalic doublure and spiniform exopod setae that are apomorphic for this genus, provides new information on the alimentary tract and midgut glands (the latter preserved as three-dimensional, permineralized structures), and indicates interspecific variability in trunk segment numbers. The distribution of Squamacula strengthens the biogeographic connections between early Cambrian “Burgess Shale-type” biotas of Australia and South China. Australimicola spriggi n. gen. n. sp. represents a monotypic genus resolved in a cladistic analysis of Cambro-Ordovician artiopodans as most closely related to or within Conciliterga (a clade containing Helmetia, Kuamaia, Kwanyinaspis, Rhombicalvaria, Saperion, Skioldia, and Tegopelte). Compared with other members of this clade from Chengjiang and the Burgess Shale, the new genus is diagnosed by an elongate trunk with 23 thoracic tergites having spatulate pleural tips and a small pygidium possessing a single, elongate pair of pleural spines, with specimens also showing a hypostome attached to an anterior (or prehypostomal) sclerite, antennae, short endopods, an annulated alimentary tract, and a series of three-dimensional, permineralized midgut glands. An alternative relationship between Australimicola and the Early Ordovician–Early Devonian Cheloniellida explains the shared anterior flexure of trunk pleurae but forces dubious homologies in other characters, such as dorsally-articulated furcae versus spines.

The stratotype for the Bashkirian Stage of the Soviet Middle Carboniferous is located on the Askyn River in Gornaya Bashkiria (western slope of south Urals). Twenty-four rock samples, mostly from the lower part of the section, yielded abundant and diverse assemblages of calcareous foraminifers which are systematically described and illustrated here for the first time.

The foraminiferal assemblage from the Siuransky Horizon at the base of the Bashkirian is essentially identical to that from the top of the underlying Lower Carboniferous Serpukhovian Stage. Thus, foraminifers do not provide a basis for identifying the Soviet Lower–Middle Carboniferous boundary. This notwithstanding, the presence of the foraminifer Globivalvulina bulloides (Brady) (=G. moderata Reitlinger) and the conodont Idiognathodus parvus (Dunn) in both the upper Serpukhovian and Bashkirian indicates that the base of the Bashkirian can be no older than medial to late Morrowan of the North American succession. The primitive fusulinid Pseudostaffella (Pseudostaffella) appears at the bases of the lower Bashkirian Akavassky Horizon and the North American Atokan Series. The base of the Akavassky is interpreted to be somewhat older than early Atokan, however, because Ps. (Pseudostaffella) appeared in the Urals in phylogenetic continuity with its immediate ancestor, whereas in most of North America it was an immigrant.

The type Bashkirian succession contains a seemingly complete phylogeny from advanced eostaffellids to primitive fusulinids. Plectostaffella jakhensis, immediate ancestor to the fusulinids, arose from a member of the Eostaffella postmosquensis plexus in the late Serpukhovian. Plectostaffella jakhensis, in turn, gave rise to Ps. (Semistaffella) variabilis in the early Bashkirian (late Siuransky), from which evolved Ps. (Ps.) antiqua shortly thereafter (earliest Akavassky). An as yet unidentified but advanced species of Ps. (Pseudostaffella) is the most likely ancestor to late Bashkirian Neostaffella ivanovi. The evolutionary series leading from the E. postmosquensis plexus to primitive Neostaffella apparently developed exclusively in the Eurasian–Arctic faunal realm, as Pl. jakhensis, Ps. (Semistaffella) variabilis, and Ps. (Ps.) antiqua are unknown in the Midcontinent–Andean region. Diverse Ps. (Pseudostaffella) spp. appeared in the latter area pursuant to an adaptive radiation aided by periodic interchange between faunal realms.

Late Ordovician radiolarians are described from allochthonous limestone breccia deposits of the graptolitic Malongulli Formation of central New South Wales. Included among the forms are the new ‘palaeoactinommid’ genus Kalimnasphaera with new species K. maculosa, the new entactiniid species, Entactinia subulata, and the new anakrusid species, Auliela taplowensis. A number of other entactiniids and the first recorded Ordovician ‘rotasphaerids’ are placed in open nomenclature. Graptolite faunas of the Malongulli Formation indicate that the deposits range in age from the Eastonian Zone of Dicranograptus hians kirki to the Bolindian Zone of Climacograptus uncinatus, that is, from latest Caradoc to early or middle Ashgill in age. This is only the second known well-preserved radiolarian assemblage to be illustrated from Late Ordovician (late Caradoc–Ashgill) successions, and the earliest known from Australia. The radiolarians typically occur in tabularly shaped, laminated lime-mudstone clasts with an abundance of siliceous sponge remains. These clasts appear to be formed from peri-platform ooze of the ‘deeper-water’ slope facies, which became incorporated in debris flows moving into the adjoining basin.

New specimens of aglaspidid arthropods, mainly from the Upper Cambrian St. Lawrence Formation of Wisconsin (Upper Dikelocephalus Zone), show that appendages previously assigned to the genotype Aglaspis barrandei actually belong to a new genus and species Flobertia kochi. Chraspedops fragilis is transferred to a new genus Tuboculops. The generic attribution of Aglaspis dorsetensis and Aglaspis franconensis is queried. The distinction at species level is queried for Setaspis spinulosus and S. regularis and also for Aglaspoides sculptilis and A. semicircularis, although no formal changes are recommended. Aglaspis simplex is transferred to Glypharthrus simplex and Glypharthrus deadwoodensis is synonymized with Glypharthrus vulpes. Restorations are presented of Aglaspis barrandei, Aglaspis spinifer, and Glypharthrus thomasi. Aglaspis spinifer probably had a total of four head appendages. Well-preserved aglaspidid specimens often evince tergal processes that are apparently unique to this taxon and these may have acted as apodemes.

Primitive euconodont elements from the Upper Cambrian of Sweden are investigated histologically and compared with co-occurring elements of paraconodonts. The proposed close relationship between the two groups is confirmed. Typical euconodont and paraconodont elements are bridged by intermediate forms. The ontogenetic development of the early euconodont elements shows striking similarities to the evolutionary development from paraconodonts to euconodonts, suggesting that evolution generally followed a peramorphic pattern (“recapitulation”). The conodont crown originated through extension of the growth lamellae around the whole element, accompanied by stronger mineralization. The first denticulation in Proconodontus arose when a jagged posterior edge in juvenile specimens was enhanced by the subsequent deposition of growth lamellae, a process comparable to the regeneration of broken tips. The most primitive euconodont elements probably erupted from the epithelium earlier in ontogeny than in more advanced forms. After the appearance of the phosphatic crown, conodont elements underwent a very rapid morphological differentiation. Cordylodus may have arisen from Proconodontus serratus.
