Morphologic analyses of a large quantity of teudopseid coleoids from the Upper Cretaceous (Cenomanian) of Lebanon has yielded a much higher diversity than previously assumed and revealed numerous extraordinarily well-preserved soft-part characters. The Teudopseina is represented by three families (only the Muensterellidae are still unknown in the Lebanon Plattenkalks). The Teudopsidae is represented by one species (Teudopsinia haasi), the Trachyteuthididae by five species (Trachyteuthis bacchiai n. sp., Glyphiteuthis libanotica, Gl. abisaadiorum, Gl. freijii n. sp., and Glyphidopsis waagei n. gen. n. sp.), and the Palaeololiginidae by one species (Rachiteuthis donovani). Gl. freijii n. sp. represents the first record of a coleoid cephalopod from Nâmmoura. A detailed comparison with Jurassic gladii shows that the Teudopseina is a very homogenous group that can be easily differentiated from other Mesozoic, gladius-bearing groups (Prototeuthidina, Loligosepiina). Despite comparatively large gaps in the fossil record, each of the Late Cretaceous gladii can be readily associated with Jurassic precursors. Particularly, the first record of two pairs of fins in Glyphiteuthis exemplifies that in addition to gladius similarities, similarities in soft-parts exist as well. A previously undescribed specimen of Rachiteuthis exhibits unusually well-preserved gills. In general, the soft-part morphology of the Teudopseina clearly indicates octobrachiate affinities (i.e., absence of tentacles, circular suckers, cirri, two pairs of fins, octopod-like eye capsules); no existing evidence supports a decabrachiate relationship.

The subclass Camerata (Crinoidea, Echinodermata) is a major group of Paleozoic crinoids that represents an early divergence in the evolutionary history and morphologic diversification of class Crinoidea, yet phylogenetic relationships among early camerates remain unresolved. This study conducted a series of quantitative phylogenetic analyses using parsimony methods to infer relationships of all well-preserved Ordovician camerate genera (52 taxa), establish the branching sequence of early camerates, and test the monophyly of traditionally recognized higher taxa, including orders Monobathrida and Diplobathrida. The first phylogenetic analysis identified a suitable outroup for rooting the Ordovician camerate tree and assessed affinities of the atypical dicyclic family Reteocrinidae. The second analysis inferred the phylogeny of all well-preserved Ordovician camerate genera. Inferred phylogenies confirm: (1) the Tremadocian genera Cnemecrinus and Eknomocrinus are sister to the Camerata; (2) as historically defined, orders Monobathrida and Diplobathrida do not represent monophyletic groups; (3) with minimal revision, Monobathrida and Diplobathrida can be re-diagnosed to represent monophyletic clades; (4) family Reteocrinidae is more closely related to camerates than to other crinoid groups currently recognized at the subclass level; and (5) several genera in subclass Camerata represent stem taxa that cannot be classified as either true monobathrids or true diplobathrids. The clade containing Monobathrida and Diplobathrida, as recognized herein, is termed Eucamerata to distinguish its constituent taxa from more basally positioned taxa, termed stem eucamerates. The results of this study provide a phylogenetic framework for revising camerate classification, elucidating patterns of morphologic evolution, and informing outgroup selection for future phylogenetic analyses of post-Ordovician camerates.

The following differences were found between the members of the cornulitids, Cornulites and Conchicolites. Both genera have egg-shaped embryonic shells, which presumably calcified after the settling of Iarva to the substrate, but the embryonic shells in Cornulites are larger than in Conchicolites. Cornulites has a regularly foliated shell ultrastructure and pseudopuncta, whereas the shell ultrastructure in Conchicolites is prismatic. In Cornulites the outer part of the shell contains numerous vesicular cavities that were never observed to cross the interspaces of the surface annulae, indicating cyclic shell secretion. In several species the vesicles are internally coated by calcitic lamellae that are oriented subparallel to the shell surface. In Conchicolites the vesicular shell structure is absent and the calcitic prisms are deposited at the shell aperture more or less at right angles to the longitudinal shell axis. The function of the surface annulae in Cornulites and transverse ridges in Conchicolites may have been to strengthen the shell wall and protect it against longitudinally developing cracks. Vesicular structure in Cornulites seems to have provided a stronger shell for less material and smaller cost of energy. Differences between Cornulites and Conchicolites indicate that the two taxa were probably unrelated and that cornulitids may be a polyphyletic taxon. Cornulites shares the most characters with the lophoporates and tentaculitids. Biological affinities of Conchicolites are controversial, and its morphologic features need further revision to affiliate this group with certainty to any extant animal phylum.

A rich and diverse micromammal fauna from the late Turolian (MN13) locality of Negratín-1 (Guadix Basin, southern Spain) is described. The faunal list of this site includes Apodemus gudrunae, Occitanomys alcalai, Stephanomys dubari, Paraethomys meini, Myocricetodon jaegeri, Debruijnimys almenarensis, Apocricetus alberti, Ruscinomys sp., Eliomys sp., Atlantoxerus sp., Parasorex ibericus, and Soricidae indet. This is the most nearly complete mammal fauna from the Miocene of the Guadix Basin and allows precise correlations with localities from other Iberian areas. In addition, some of the taxa identified in Negratín-1 are useful as palaeoecological indicators (Myocricetodon, Debruijnimys, Atlantoxerus), evidencing warm and dry climatic conditions. But the principal interest of the fauna from Negratín-1 is the presence of several species of African origin, the gerbillids Debruijnimys almenarensis and Myocricetodon jaegeri, which are recognized for the first time in Europe. We also ascribe to M. jaegeri the population from the upper Turolian karst infilling of Almenara-M. This finding constitutes new evidence for faunal exchanges between North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula during the Messinian Salinity Crisis.

The early Paleocene Purgatorius Van Valen and Sloan is the most primitive plesiadapiform primate yet discovered, mostly known from middle to late Puercan strata in Montana, deposited during the interval C29N of the geomagnetic polarity time scale. Here we describe Purgatorius coracis n. sp. from the Ravenscrag Formation, at the Rav W-1 horizon, Medicine Hat Brick and Tile Quarry, southwestern Saskatchewan. This horizon occurs within C29R, making P. coracis the earliest known primate, while strengthening the evidence that plesiadapiforms, and hence primates, originated and underwent their initial evolutionary diversification in North America. Most North American mammalian local faunas correlating with C29R have been assigned to the Pul (earliest Puercan) interval zone, but the taxonomic composition of the mammals accompanying P. coracis at Rav W-1 more resembles local faunas of Pu2 age. The occurrence at Rav W-1 of Pu2 aspect mammals within C29R agrees with similar occurrences at the Hiatt and PITA Flats localities in Montana and North Dakota, also possibly correlated with C29R. The evidence from these three sites, all in the Williston Basin, suggests that in some areas of the Western Interior Pu2 aspect local faunas were coeval with those of latest Pu1 age, having evolved earlier than has commonly been assumed.

New material of Gasparinisaura cincosaltensis from the Río Colorado Formation (Upper Cretaceous) of northwestern Patagonia (Río Negro Province, Argentina) provides seven new characters that are interpreted as autapomorphies of the species: 1) four true sacrals; 2) first sacral rib not coalescent with second sacral rib; 3) long pubic peduncle of ilium; 4) absence of anterior intercondylar groove on femur; 5) both malleoli of the tibia approximately at the same level; 6) metatarsal II posteriorly compressed laterally; and 7) low ascendant process of the astragalus. A phylogenetic analysis of selected ornithopods indicates that Gasparinisaura cincosaltensis is the most plesiomorphic Euiguanodontia. A complete absence of hatchlings indicates that Cinco Saltos was not a nest site.

Three microfossil assemblages occur in the Mesoproterozoic Bangemall Group (1625-1000 Ma) of northwestern Australia, each occupying a different environmental and taphonomic setting. In peritidal environments, benthic prokaryotic filaments and spheroids of matting habit and small size were permineralized by early diagenetic silicification of stromatolitic carbonates. In shallow subtidal environments, benthic filaments of large size and nonmatting habit and planktonic sphaeromorph acritarchs with thin walls and moderate dimensions were compressed in mildly kerogenous shale. In deeper subtidal environments, planktonic megasphaeromorph acritarchs with thick walls were initially entombed in concretionary nodules in highly kerogenous shale and then permineralized by silica during later diagenesis. Taxonomic diversity and numerical abundance evidently decrease offshore. The three assemblages have typical Mesoproterozoic aspects: peritidal benthic habitats were dominated by Siphonophycus-Sphaerophycus-Eosynechococcus-Myxococcoides-Palaeopleurocapsa, shallow subtidal settings were occupied by Siphonophycus-Leiosphaeridia-Pterospermopsimorpha-Satka, and offshore plankton consisted solely of very large chuarid acritarchs. Because of its taphonomic restriction to mid-intertidal stromatolites, the peritidal assemblage can be equated in microenvironment with a similar assemblage in the Neoproterozoic Draken Conglomerate, suggesting that ecological stasis at the community level can last for intervals up to 900 million years. In the deeper subtidal assemblage, the common chuarid has an unusual mode of preservation, in three dimensions in early diagenetic concretions, revealing that it possesses a thick multilamellate wall. Because of this distinctive ultrastructure, the new genus Crassicorium is erected for these fossils, which are among the oldest indubitable eukaryotes. Very large (34-55 μm in diameter) filaments from shallow subtidal habitats are assigned to the emended species Siphonophycus punctatum.

Three-dimensionally phosphatized, spherical fossils, interpreted as metazoan eggs and embryos on the basis of taphonomic features and cleavage patterns, are reported for the first time from the Cambrian of North America. These microfossils occur with a phosphatized biota of skeletonized fossils, including specimens indicative of the earliest Cambrian Anabarites–Protohertzina Zone in the Wernecke Mountains of eastern Yukon Territory, northwestern Canada. They range in size from 0.25 mm to more than 1.0 mm in diameter and can be referred to two genera, Olivooides Qian, 1977 and Archaeooides Qian, 1977. The North American discovery extends the biogeographic range of earliest Cambrian eggs and embryos from coeval successions in China and Siberia, suggesting a wide geographic distribution of these taxa, and emphasizes the crucial role of local environmental and taphonomic conditions in preserving this phosphatic window into the record of early animal evolution. In addition to previously reported taxa, the phosphatized biota also include indeterminate spheroids, fused clusters of Protohertzina siciformis Missarzhevsky, 1973, the enigmatic rodlike fossil Zhejiangorhabdion comptum Yue and Zhao, 1993, phosphatized fossils, including Paradoxiconus typicalis Qian et al., 2001, protoconularid Carinachites sp., and phosphatic tubes assigned to Hyolithellus cf. H. isiticus Missarzhevsky, 1969, cf. Pseudorthotheca sp., and ?Rugatotheca sp.

The skull of the enigmatic turtle Compsemys victa Leidy, 1856 is described. A number of unique characteristics are apparent, including the extremely thick nature of all cranial bones, the presence of rod-like epipterygoids, placement of the foramen posterius canalis carotici interni halfway along the contact between the pterygoid and basisphenoid, lack of cheek emarginations, and the reduction of the size of the cavum tympani relative to the orbit. Two differing global turtle analyses and one paracryptodiran analysis were performed to determine the phylogenetic placement of C. victa. Both global analyses converged by placing C. victa within Paracryptodira, herein defined as the most inclusive clade that includes Pleurosternon bullockii and Baena arenosa, but no species of living turtle, whereas the paracryptodiran analysis places C. victa outside of Baenoidea, herein defined as the least inclusive clade that contains P. bullockii and B. arenosa. Although a number of similarities are apparent between C. victa and the uncommon, extant testudinoid Platysternon megacephalum, the available data indicate that these similarities are convergent, likely due to their carnivorous diet. Taphonomic evidence reveals that basal paracryptodires, including C. victa, preferred slow moving or ponded water environments. The riverine habitat preference of baenodds must therefore be derived.

The foraminiferal suborder Astrorhizina is reinstated for the typically monothalamous agglutinated taxa whose cementing material is solely organic, the suborder Haplophragmiina reinstated for multilocular agglutinated taxa with organic cement and simple to alveolar walls. The suborder Trochamminina is recognized for those with organic cement and simple agglutinated walls, and the suborder Textulariina is restricted to include only those with agglutinated walls containing biogenic calcareous cement, and typically canaliculate. In the latter suborder, the new genera Connemarella, type species Gaudryina rudis Wright, and Hemlebenia, type species Hemlebenia aptiensis n. sp., are described in the expanded family Pseudogaudryinidae, subfamily Pseudogaudryininae, whose geologic range thereby is extended into the Lower Cretaceous (Aptian).

The shallow-marine Carmel Formation (Middle Jurassic) in central Utah hosts low-diversity trace fossil assemblages, including Arenicolites, Chondrites, Gyrochorte, Lockeia, Planolites, Protovirgularia, Rosselia, Scalarituba, Skolithos, Taenidium, and Teichichnus. Non specialized ichnotaxa with a remarkably small burrow size dominate the assemblages. The amount of bioturbation is lower than expected in comparison with modern shallow-marine carbonate environments. These ichnological features also are significantly different from those of other Jurassic shallow-marine carbonates. The trace fossils represent an environmentally stressed benthic community in a marginal marine, restricted setting, with salinities above normal marine and with depletion of oxygen in pore waters.

Previously undescribed Holmiidae from the Sectigena Zone of Morocco indicate correlation of this zone with other zones bearing Holmiidae on Baltica, Avalonia, Siberia, and Laurentia. The occurrence of the youngest Antatlasiinae in the Sectigena Zone and the oldest Protoleninae in the overlying Hupeolenus Zone suggests correlations of the Sectigena Zone with upper Atdabanian beds bearing the youngest Antatlasiinae and the Hupeolenus Zone with Botomian beds bearing the oldest Protoleninae in Siberia. The occurrence, in the overlying Hupeolenus and Cephalopyge Zones, of Paradoxides s.l. in association with the olenelloid Cambropallas and with trilobites characteristic of the Lower Cambrian “Protolenus” Zone of Avalonia calls into question the major criteria for recognition of strata of Early and Middle Cambrian age. New taxa include lyouella contracta n. gen. and sp. of the Holmiidae and Bondonella sdzuyi n. sp. of the Neltneriidae. The known species of Neltneria, N. jacqueti and N. termieri, are revised.

Two new xyloiuloid millipedes (Diplopoda: Chilognatha: Juliformia) are described and placed in the new family Gaspestriidae: Gaspestria genselorum n. gen and sp. from the Emsian of Québec and New Brunswick and Sigmastria dilata n. gen. and sp. from the Pragian of the Midland Valley of Scotland. These new millipedes extend the stratigraphic range of xyloiuloid millipedes, which previously were only described from the Pennsylvanian of Europe and North America. All xyloiuloid millipede families are placed within the superfamily Xyloiuloidea which is left incertae sedis within Juliformia due to a lack of preservation of diagnostic characters that would allow placement within an extant order. The presence in the Lower Devonian of the superorder Juliformia, universally agreed among diplopod taxonomists to represent the most derived clade of Diplopoda, indicates that most of millipede cladogenesis leading to high-rank extant clades had to have occurred by this time, much earlier than previously indicated by the fossil record. A stratocladogram for Myriapoda is constructed, and in combination with data from the plant fossil record and nuclear protein-encoding genes, new hypotheses regarding timing of millipede high-rank cladogenesis in the Paleozoic are formulated. These include terrestrialization of Diplopoda no later than the Ordovician along with the origin of the lineage leading to Penicillata and Arthropleuridea, followed by a period of relative stasis until the Middle Silurian, at which point there was a rapid radiation of Diplopoda, producing most of the high-rank clades by the Lower Devonian.

The abundance and diversity of marine phytoplankton and the geologic timing of its major innovations and extinctions show a broad but inverse relationship to stages of terrestrial plant evolution. Successively, the first appearance of land plants, and the later major increases in global live terrestrial biomass and dead biomass in the form of plant litter, peat, coal, and soil humus, increased the retention on land of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus, and decreased the amount of these nutrients that was transported by rivers to the seas. Each major increase in terrestrial nutrient retention resulted in extensive changes in the marine ecosystem, as it adapted to the new conditions. From its time of origin in the early Paleozoic, the terrestrial biota figuratively occupied the position at the head of the table, and only the unutilized nutrient excess trickled down to the oceanic phytoplankton and its dependent food web.

Alluvial fan and braided fluvial redbeds of the Triassic Lepreau Formation of southern New Brunswick, eastern Canada, contain a moderately diverse and abundant invertebrate ichnofauna. Fourteen formal ichnotaxa are recognized: Ancorichnus coronus, Ancorichnus cf. A. ancorichnus, Aulichnites isp., Cruziana problematica, Fuersichnus isp., Gordia marina, Palaeophycus striatus, Palaeophycus isp., Planolites isp., Rusophycus isp., Skolithos linearis, cf. Skolithos isp., and Taenidium isp. Two vernacular ichnotaxa, “inclined meniscate burrows” and “surface pit structures,” also occur. All these ichnotaxa are figured and briefly described. Collectively, the entire assemblage can confidently be assigned to the Scoyenia ichnofacies that, in the Lepreau Formation, represents a fluvial channel ichnocoenose.

Specimens have been subject to marked taphonomic effects due to weathering and preservation in lithologies showing either insufficient variation in grain size or a grain size too coarse to preserve subtle morphological variations; as a consequence, ichno-taxobases are commonly obscured or obliterated. This may have influenced the apparent diversity of the assemblage, especially with regard to meniscate and simple horizontal burrows. It is proposed that application of “taphoseries,” theoretical series including ichnotaxa that may potentially be mistaken for each other with increasing taphonomic overprint, provides a safeguard against ichnotaxonomic misidentifications.

On the basis of recent collections from the Upper Eocene La Meseta Formation of Seymour Island, Antarctic Peninsula, the morphology, systematic position, taphonomy, and paleoecology of the isocrinid Metacrinus fossilis are investigated. A new species, Notocrinus rasmusseni, is described as the first comatulid crinoid known from the Antarctic fossil record. The systematic assignment of M. fossilis is maintained. Basal abrasion of calyxes and absence of long attached columns suggest that M. fossilis might have lost most of the column in adult stages and lived directly on the substratum, supported by some arms and a few cirri, similar to comatulids. About 10 percent of M. fossilis individuals show brachial regeneration, in contrast to regeneration frequencies of 70–90 percent among modern Japanese isocrinids. The anomalous occurrence of isocrinids in shallow-water facies of the La Meseta is attributed to a combination of reduced predation pressure, the presumed stalkless mode of life, and a favorable temperature regime in Antarctic surface waters prior to the onset of cooling at the close of the Eocene.

Abundant and diverse trace fossils occur in deposits, recording an Early Devonian transgression in Bolivia. the very well-exposed Presto-El Peral section is located in the Interandean Belt 50 km northeast of Sucre. Trace fossils can be assigned to five associations from nearshore to offshore environments (namely Skolithos, Diplocraterion, Altichnus, Palaeophycus, and Zoophycos associations). They clearly illustrate the different colonization phases of the benthos with increasing marine influence. A deeper-water Helminthopsis association occurs in other complementary sections on the Eastern Cordillera. Variation of bioturbation intensity, ichnodiversity, and preservation potential is evaluated. the morphology of traces, mainly deep burrows, shows a significant gradient related to the behavior of tracemakers and the environmental changes. Main trends are consistent with the Seilacherian bathymetric model which is detailed here and/or emended with a well-exposed field example. A precise correlation is proposed with fossil benthic associations dominated by brachiopods. the whole gives an accurate model for benthos colonization and benthic marine zonation.

Molds of corals, bivalves, and gastropods in the Oligocene–Miocene Bluff Formation of Grand Cayman Island contain casts of Entobia (nine ichnospecies including the new ichnospecies E. dendritica), Trypanites (three ichnospecies), Gastrochaenolites (two ichnospecies), Maeandropolydora (one ichnospecies), Talpina (one ichnospecies), and Caulostrepsis (one ichnospecies), as well as the new ichnogenus Uniglobites, indeterminate ichnogenus A, and a problematical boring. Entobia accounts for about 75 percent of the borings, while Uniglobites and Trypanites together account for 15 percent of the borings. Comparison of Uniglobites with modern borings of known affinity suggests that it was produced by adociid and/or clionid sponges while indeterminate ichnogenus A was probably formed by bivalves. The amount of boring, which ranges from 0 to 75 percent, varies from skeleton to skeleton or, in some cases, from branch to branch of the same coral colony. The branching coral Stylophora was particularly susceptible to boring, probably because of its small size and high surface area. The average boring of about 38 percent compares favorably with the amount of boring found in modern corals. Analysis of the borings suggests that sponges were responsible for most of the borings in the corals from the Bluff Formation. Comparison with bioerosion in modern reefs suggests that similar patterns of bioerosion were also occurring in Oligocene–Miocene times.

Piscichnus brownii n. gen. and sp. is described from the Plio-Pleistocene Koobi Fora Formation of northern Kenya. The trace fossil is an unornamented, shallow, dish-shaped structure preserved in concave epirelief on sandstones. This structure is interpreted to result from the nest-excavating activities of fish.

Tommotiids are a geologically short-lived group of early skeletal fossils, most abundant in the Lower Cambrian. Redescriptions of a lapworthellid (Lapworthella rete Yue, 1987) and a tannuolinid (Tannuolina zhangwentangi Qian and Bengtson, 1989) from the Jiulaodong Formation, Maidiping, Sichuan, augment previous accounts. Lapworthella rete approaches the L. dentata–L. schodackensis complex, but has a prominent external pattern of polygons that probably represent imprints of epithelial cells. Description of Tannuolina zhangwentangi emphasises ultrastructural features, including the mode of growth, development of canals, and possible epithelial imprints on the interior surfaces. Data on size variation of epithelial imprints in tommotiids are reviewed to try to infer possible variations in genome content of the cells. In addition, poorly preserved lapworthellids (Lapworthella sp.) are described from the Qiongzhusi Formation, Meishucun, Yunnan.
