While quantum accelerometers sense with extremely low drift and low bias, their practical sensing capabilities face at least two limitations compared with classical accelerometers: a lower sample rate due to cold atom interrogation time; and a reduced dynamic range due to signal phase wrapping. In this paper, we propose a maximum likelihood probabilistic data fusion method, under which the actual phase of the quantum accelerometer can be unwrapped by fusing it with the output of a classical accelerometer on the platform. Consequently, the recovered measurement from the quantum accelerometer is used to estimate bias and drift of the classical accelerometer which is then removed from the system output. We demonstrate the enhanced error performance achieved by the proposed fusion method using a simulated 1D accelerometer precision test scenario. We conclude with a discussion on fusion error and potential solutions.

This paper introduces a novel approach for extracting vessel navigation patterns from very large automatic identification system (AIS) trajectory big data. AIS trajectory data records are first converted to a series of code documents using vector quantisation, such as k-means and PQk-means algorithms, whose performance is evaluated in terms of precision and computational time. Therefore, a topic model is applied to these code documents from which vessels’ navigation patterns are extracted and identified. The potential of the proposed approach is illustrated by several experiments conducted with a practical AIS dataset in a region of North West France. These experimental results show that the proposed approach is highly appropriate for mining AIS trajectory big data and outperforms common DBSCAN algorithms and Gaussian mixture models.

The study is an experimental and theoretical analysis of the patterns of traffic flows and the possibilities of their distribution on urban street and road networks. It considers and analyses modern approaches that make it possible to improve traffic flow control mechanisms and traffic conditions on a street and road network. Based on the established internal relationships, the paper develops a model of the influence of factors on the level of their priority, which makes it possible to divide them by hierarchy levels and, accordingly, to observe the level of their impact on independent components. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the newly developed method of vehicle traffic control, which involves the distribution of traffic flows along the urban street and road network. The conclusions presented in the study represent scientific and methodological developments and applied recommendations that can be used in urban planning to improve the conditions of transport services in populated areas.

Concentrating on a surface vessel with input saturation, model uncertainties and unknown disturbances, a path following the adaptive backstepping control method based on prescribed performance line-of-sight (PPLOS) guidance is proposed. First, a prescribed performance asymmetric modified barrier Lyapunov function (PPAMBLF) is used to design the PPLOS and the heading controller, which make the path following position and heading errors meet the prescribed performance requirements. Furthermore, the backstepping and dynamic surface technique (DSC) are used to design the path following controller and the adaptive assistant systems are constructed to compensate the influence of input saturation. In addition, neural networks are introduced to approximate model uncertainties, and the adaptive laws are designed to estimate the bounds of the neural network approximation errors and unknown disturbances. According to the Lyapunov stability theory, all signals are semi-globally uniformly ultimately bounded. Finally, a 76$\,{\cdot }\,$2 m supply surface vessel is used for simulation experiments. The experimental results show that although the control inputs are limited, the control system can still converge quickly, and both position and heading errors can be limited to the prescribed performance requirements.

Collisions are one of the major accidents in the shipping industry, causing significant losses. In this work, a framework of marine collision risk identification strategy was developed to quantitatively analyse collision risks and provide an easy and convenient way to monitor traffic flow in relevant waters to mitigate the chances of collision. The model was verified by using automatic identification system data obtained from Tianjin Port. When compared to previous research, the proposed model can identify risks earlier and give people more time to analyse and take action. The results indicate that it also can provide a visual display to alert relevant personnel. The model can be used as a reference to identify potential collision risks or as an information source for future research.

The use of the required navigation performance (RNP) procedure has been increasing for aircraft navigation, since it allows for better optimisation of the airspace, which is increasingly congested. The present work aims to investigate the application of the functional resonance analysis method (FRAM), combined with the quantitative analysis provided by the Bayesian belief network (BBN), to demonstrate the existing variability in functions that are part of the complex navigation system based on the RNP procedure, specifically when the aircraft approaches the airport (approach phase). As a result, it is possible to analyse the variability that occurs in the studied system and the BBN complemented the study by allowing a quantitative interpretation of the functions considered most important for the execution of an RNP approach procedure.

This paper proposes a switched model to improve the estimation of Euler angles and decrease the inertial navigation system (INS) error, when the centrifugal acceleration occurs. Depending on the situation, one of the subsystems of the proposed switched model is activated for the estimation procedure. During global positioning system (GPS) outages, an extended Kalman filter (EKF) operates in the prediction mode and corrects the INS information, based on the system error model. Compared with previous works, the main advantages of the proposed switched-based adaptive EKF (SAEKF) method are (i) elimination of INS error, during the centrifugal acceleration, and (ii) high accuracy in estimating the attitude and positioning, particularly during GPS outages. To validate the efficiency of the proposed method in various trajectories, an experimental flight test is performed and discussed, involving a microelectromechanical (MEMS)-based INS. The comparative study shows that the proposed method considerably improves the accuracy in various scenarios.

Transverse arrangement is one of the main methods used in the polar inertial navigation system (INS). In the traditional algorithm, the calculation of using the earth ellipsoid model is complex, while using the earth sphere model cannot satisfy a high-accuracy application. Therefore, an approach based on the virtual sphere model is proposed, which has been proved in simulation experiments to reduce the computational complexity and maintain the same accuracy as the ellipsoid algorithm, but its accuracy has not yet been proved in theory. Starting from the basic principles of the ellipsoid and virtual sphere model algorithm, this paper compares the key formulations of the two. Finally, it is proved that the two arrangements are actually the same.

Reliable anti-collision control algorithms conforming with the rules regulating traffic at sea, the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREG), are essential for the deployment of autonomous vessels in waters shared with other ships. The development of such methods is an active field of research. However, little attention has been given to how these rules are interpreted by experienced mariners, and how such information can be parametrised for use in automatic control systems and autonomous ships. This paper presents a method for exploiting historical automatic identification system (AIS) data to characterise parameters indicating the prevalent practices at sea in encounters with high collision risk. The method has been tested on data gathered in areas off the Norwegian coast over several years. Statistics on relevant parameters from the resulting dataset and the relation between them is presented. The results indicate that the strongest influence on vessel behaviour is the type of situation, and the amount of land and grounding hazards in the vessel's proximity.

This paper presents a robust train localisation system by fusing a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) with an Inertial Navigation System (INS) in a tightly-coupled (TC) strategy. To improve navigation performance in GNSS partly blocked areas, an advanced map-matching (MM) measurement-augmented TC GNSS/INS method is proposed via an error-state unscented Kalman filter (UKF). The advanced MM generates a matched position using a one-step predicted position from a UKF time update step with binary search algorithm and a point–line projection algorithm. The matched position inputs as an additional measurement to fuse with the INS position to augment the degraded GNSS pseudorange measurement to optimise the state estimation in the UKF measurement update step. Both the real train test on the Qinghai–Tibet railway and the simulation were carried out and the results confirm that the proposed advanced MM measurement-augmented TC GNSS/INS with error-state UKF provides the best horizontal positioning accuracy of 0 ⋅ 67 m, which performs an improvement of about 71% and 90% with respect to TC GNSS/INS with only error-state UKF and only error-state Extended Kalman filter in GNSS partly blocked areas.

Effective communication among seafarers is an important part of ship resource management. The improvement of effective internal communication among seafarers has an important impact on the improvement of work performance. This paper conducts an empirical study to determine which factors are related to the impact of seafarers’ communication on work performance. A questionnaire was designed to investigate 339 seafarers from different companies, different ship types and different ranks. The hypotheses were tested and analysed by five-point Likert scale, hierarchical regression analysis and path analysis. The findings of the study show that communication frequency and communication quality have a significant positive effect on performance. The effect of communication quality on performance is greater than the effect of communication frequency on performance. Two dimensions of team diversity – knowledge and skill diversity – have a significant positive impact on communication quality. Based on the questionnaire and relevant analysis, this paper puts forward some suggestions to improve the seafarer's work performance from the perspective of communication.

Currently, most of the studies on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) automatic landing systems mainly depend on image information to determine the landing location. However, the system requires a camera, a gimbal system and a separate image-processing device, which increases the weight and power consumption of the UAV, resulting in a shorter flight time. In addition, a large amount of computation and slow reaction speed can cause the camera to miss a proper landing moment. To solve these problems, in this study, the moving direction and relative distance between an object and the automatic landing system were measured using a receive signal strength indicator of the radio-frequency (RF) signal. To improve the movement direction and relative distance estimation accuracy, the noise in the RF signal was minimised using a low pass filter and moving average filter. Based on the filtered RF signal, the acceleration of the multicopter to reach the object was estimated by adopting the proportional navigation algorithm. The performance of the proposed algorithm for precise landing on a moving vehicle was demonstrated through experiments.

Ultra-rapid products have the advantage of being used in real-time positioning with no external connections. In this study, these products provided by the international GNSS Monitoring and Assessment System (iGMAS) for four global constellations (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BDS-3) were assessed in terms of service rate and accuracy in navigation. In this regard, a MATLAB-based in-house code solving the problem was developed for all possible combinations of the constellations. To explore the effectiveness of the iGMAS products, the same dataset has been also processed using GFZ rapid products. The results demonstrate that the GPS and Galileo solutions were substantially comparable to the rapid products concerning service rate and accuracy, but that the GLONASS and BDS-3 iGMAS products require some enhancements. In addition, the Galileo solution produced remarkably good results both individually and in combination. The GPS/GLONASS/Galileo/BDS-3 SPP solution generated a mean root mean square (RMS) error of 0 ⋅ 54 m horizontally and 0 ⋅ 89 m vertically. Thus, GPS-only, GLONASS-only, Galileo-only and BDS-3-only solutions were improved by 42%, 79%, 28% and 74% in 3D mean RMS error with the quad system solutions, respectively.

Maritime traffic risk is increasing rapidly with the growth of marine traffic volume and construction of marine facilities, water bridges, port development, marine wind farm, etc. Given this emerging trend, this paper presents a bibliometric analysis and mapping of the broad academic literature related to maritime traffic safety, focusing on the influences of international collaborations and knowledge sources on the developments of this research domain. To identify trends, patterns and the knowledge distribution of the research on maritime traffic safety, the visualisation of similarities (VOS) viewer software, the bibliometric analysis, and scientometric mapping of the literature have been performed from the perspectives of publication and citation distribution over time, leading authors, countries (regions), institutions, the corresponding collaboration networks, most cited publications and references, focused research fields and topics, research trend evolution over time, etc. The paper provides a comprehensive and quantitative overview and significant picture representation of the domain's leading and evolutionary trends by employing specific aforementioned bibliometric analysis factors. In addition, by reviewing the evolutionary trends of the journals and the proposed investigated factors, such as the influential works, main research topics, and the research frontiers, this paper reveals the scientific literature's main research objectives and directions that could be addressed and explored in future studies.

As no internationally agreed-upon method for determining safe speed values currently exists, collecting vast amounts of information on conventional ship behaviour could be used to train autonomous ship intelligence in determining safe speeds in different conditions. This requires speed data collected from conventional ships to resemble what can be described as safe speeds. To test this, the Automatic Identification System (AIS) and environmental data – namely visibility, mean wind speed and significant wave height – were collected and merged for two study areas in Norway in the period between 27 March 2014 and 1 January 2021. Regression analyses based on 47,490 unique vessel transits were conducted and supplemented by two graphical methods for revealing relationships between variables. Contrary to the contemporary understanding of safe speed, reduced visibility did not lead to significantly reduced transit speeds. Wind and waves caused a reduction in speed in the open ocean, but not in coastal waters. Transit speeds were lower in coastal waters than in the open ocean.

Space-based automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) receivers can cover thousands of aircraft, each transmitting 6 ⋅ 2 signals per second. As a result, ADS-B signals are very prone to overlap. When the number of aircraft covered by a receiver reaches 3,000, about 90 % of the signals will be overlapping. Overlapped signals can reduce the decoding accuracy of receivers, so that aircraft information cannot be accurately transmitted to the air traffic control (ATC) surveillance system, hence threatening aviation flight safety. It is necessary to propose signal separation algorithms for space-based ADS-B systems. An orthogonal projection linear constrained minimum variance (OPLCMV) algorithm is proposed, which can separate two signals simultaneously based on the linearly constrained minimum variance algorithm by exploiting the characteristics of overlapped signals. Compared with the state-of-the-art extended projection algorithm and the fast independent component analysis algorithm, the OPLCMV method has a higher decoding accuracy for multiple overlapping signals with a small direction difference of arrival or frequency shift. Moreover, the OPLCMV algorithm has a low computational complexity when the number of overlapped signal sources is less than seven.

It has been acknowledged that the Doppler is beneficial to the GNSS positioning of smartphones. However, analysis of Doppler precision on smartphones is insufficient. In this paper, we focus on the characteristic analysis of the raw Doppler measurement from Android smartphones. A comprehensive investigation of the Doppler was conducted. The results illustrate that the availability of Doppler is stable and higher than that of carrier measurements, which means that the Doppler-smoothed code (DSC) method is more effective. However, there is a constant bias between the Doppler and the code rate in Xiaomi MI8, which indicates that extra processing of the DSC method is necessary for this phone. Additionally, it is demonstrated that the relationship between the Doppler and C/N0 can be expressed as an exponential function, and the fitting parameters are provided. The numerical experiment in car-borne and hand-held scenes was conducted for evaluating the performance of the Doppler-aided positioning algorithm. For positioning, the improvement reaches 37 ⋅ 69%/37 ⋅ 14%/26 ⋅ 61% in the east, north and up components, respectively, after applying the Doppler aiding. For velocity estimation, the improvement reaches 29 ⋅ 62%/39 ⋅ 63%/29 ⋅ 37% in the three components, respectively.

With the rapid development of the maritime industry and the emergence of unmanned ships, it is necessary to continuously review the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (1972, COLREGs). This paper provides an overview of the developing history of the COLREGs and summarises the interpretations made by the International Maritime Organization official and academic scholars. Additionally, the paper discusses the application of the COLREGs in collision avoidance geometry and autonomous collision avoidance systems. Furthermore, the necessity and key points of revisions to adapt to industry advancements are discussed, along with an analysis of the main challenges faced. Finally, in light of the continuous progress and implementation of the outcome of the Regulatory Scoping Exercise for the Use of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS), the paper points out that achieving consistency between manned and unmanned vessels, as well as developing COLREGs-based autonomous collision avoidance systems for more complex scenarios, is expected to be a significant trend in the future.
