Surface roughness and finite sample thickness are major sources of error in the nanoindentation measurements of thin films as the former makes it difficult to determine the effective contact point between the indenter and sample while the latter limits the usable depth range to be no more than ∼10% of the film thickness. Combining a closed-form model of a film/substrate system with the ability of nanoindentation to monitor the contact depth, the present method defines the two-dimensional shape profile of the indenter contacting the composite system with one unknown constant associated with the model and another unknown constant associated with the effective contact point. On the basis that the obtained shape profile of the rigid indenter is identical to the pre-determined indenter shape profile function, the method extrapolates the two constants simultaneously so as to determine the effective contact point. The method was demonstrated for amorphous diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings.

This paper investigates the effects of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) as additives in palm-oil trimethylolpropane (TMP) ester blended in polyalphaolefin. Different concentrations of GNPs that were ultrasonically homogenized in blended lubricants consist of 95 vol% polyalphaolefin and 5 vol% TMP ester. Physical properties of the nanolubricants were identified and tribological behaviors of GNP in blended lubricants were studied using standard fourball testing and surface analysis was done on the wear surfaces using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive x-ray techniques. Addition of 0.05 wt% GNP in blended lubricant resulted in the lowest coefficient of friction and wear scar diameter, thus selected as the most suitable concentration of GNP in the blended lubricant. Friction and wear were reduced by 5 and 15% respectively, with the presence of 0.05 wt% GNP in the blended lubricant.

Dissimilar joints of advanced 9Cr/CrMoV have been successfully welded by narrow gap submerged arc welding using multi-layer and multi-pass techniques. The objective of our study is to establish the correlation between impact toughness and microstructural characteristics of the welded joints. Impact toughness tests were conducted in a wide range of temperature from −60 °C to 80 °C for different regions in the dissimilar joints. The fracture appearance transition temperature of base metal of 9Cr, CrMoV and weld metal were tested as 23 °C, −9 °C and −2 °C respectively, which all satisfied the service requirement. Optical microscope and scanning electron microscope revealed that weld metal and base metal of CrMoV comprised martensite and bainite while 9Cr was composed of lath martensite. The low toughness in the latter region arose from large grains with excessive carbide precipitates. Nonuniform microstructure in the heat-affected zone of 9Cr side caused different crack propagation paths and subsequently led to large variations of absorbed energy. When crack propagates along carbon-enriched zone in heat affected zone, the absorbed energy was 48 J. With crack deviating far from carbon-enriched zone, the absorbed energy increased to 147 J. Examination on fracture surfaces revealed the typical brittle fracture appearance in 9Cr and inter-granular fracture mode in heat-affected zone of 9Cr side when crack propagated along carbon-enriched zone.

It is demonstrated that Na doping can significantly improve the hydriding performance of Mg2Ni under an isobaric-isothermal condition of 2 MPa H2 and 350 °C. This is achieved via an increase of the interphase grain boundary area and density of dislocations as compared to the Na-free material. Significant enrichment of Na+ cations on the alloys' surface coupled with the catalytic effect of metallic Ni are suggested to increase the hydrogen–metal bonding strength facilitating hydrogen adsorption/dissociation. The mechanisms of hydrogen absorption are discussed based on a nucleation and growth theory. Additionally, by means of in situ synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction, the transition of Mg2Ni into the stable Mg2NiH0.3 is observed in real-time.

Potassium titanyl phosphate crystals in both x-cut and z-cut were irradiated with 185 MeV Au ions. The morphology of the resulting ion tracks was investigated using small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). SAXS measurements indicate the presence of cylindrical ion tracks with abrupt boundaries and a density contrast of 1 ± 0.5% compared to the surrounding matrix, consistent with amorphous tracks. The track radius depends on the crystalline orientation, with 6.0 ± 0.1 nm measured for ion tracks along the x-axis and 6.3 ± 0.1 nm for those along the z-axis. TEM images in both cross-section and plan-view show amorphous ion tracks with radii comparable to those determined from SAXS analysis. The protruding hillocks covering the sample surface detected by AFM are consistent with a lower density of the amorphous material within the ion tracks compared to the surrounding matrix. Simulations using an inelastic thermal-spike model indicate that differences in the thermal conductivity along the z- and x-axis can partially explain the different track radii along these directions.

Refractory carbides possess metal-like electronic and catalytic properties, which make them interesting candidates for anodes in solid oxide fuel cells. However, significant challenges include phase instability due to electrochemical potential gradient driven oxidation. This requires an understanding of both the chemical thermodynamics in operating environments along with direct measurement of the catalytic activity in fuel mixtures. Here, we present an experimental study on nanostructured WC as an anode for solid oxide fuel cells operating at 300–500 °C. This is enabled by combining calculated thermochemical equilibria validated against experiments at the material level and in fuel cell devices combined with flow reactor studies on fuel-selective catalytic activity directly at working anode interfaces. With an optimized anode microstructure and hydrogen–methane fuel mixtures, WC anode-based solid oxide fuel cells are shown to achieve a near-ideal open circuit voltage of 1.1 V at 500 °C.

A dense monolithic intermetallic Al3Ti alloy was successfully synthesized via reactive sintering in vacuum using TC4 alloy and pure aluminum foils with appropriate initial thickness. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), x-ray diffractometry (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the phase and microstructure of Al3Ti alloy. Ultrasonic measurement was performed to evaluate the physical property of Al3Ti alloy. Different thermal analysis, thermogravimetry (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to assess the thermal property of Al3Ti alloy. The compressive tests were carried out on a universal load frame to determine the mechanical properties, including the compressive strength and failure strain of the fabricated intermetallic Al3Ti alloy. The current results indicated that the density of Al3Ti alloy is slightly higher than the theoretical density, the average Young's modulus is lower than the theoretical value. A trace of aluminum in Al3Ti alloy was detected, which is distinctly affected on the density, Young's modulus and mechanical properties of this titanium aluminide alloy. The stress–strain curves of Al3Ti alloy shows a linear elastic behavior without any plastic deformation, and the fracture features are the mixed fracture of transgranular and intergranular. Some other fundamental physical and mechanical properties of the Al3Ti alloy were also obtained in the present study.

Iron (Fe)-doped zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films were deposited using two techniques: (i) radio-frequency (RF) sputtering of Fe-doped ZnO targets, and (ii) co-sputtering, where ZnO was RF-sputtered and iron was direct-current (DC)-sputtered. The as-deposited films were polycrystalline, with predominant growth along the (002) direction of hexagonal ZnO, and possessed a considerable concentration of oxygen vacancies. From an optoelectronic point of view, the films were highly transparent, with a band gap of 3.25 eV, and had electrical resistivity values in the range of 100–103 Ω cm. To improve the electrical conductivity of the films, they were annealed in a vacuum and in a hydrogen atmosphere. The annealing process did not affect the optical properties of the films. However, there were substantial structural and chemical changes in the films. Moreover, the electrical conductivity of the films was enhanced drastically upon annealing in hydrogen, where the electrical resistivity was reduced to 3.2 × 10−3 Ω cm.

The effect of electropulsing assisted ultrasonic surface modification (EUSM) on microstructure and surface properties of S50C steel welded components is investigated. Compared with conventional ultrasonic surface modification (USM) process, EUSM process achieves significant improvements in microstructure, including deeper strengthened layers and gradient microstructure on the surface. The EUSM-induced microstructure results in higher levels of surface compressive residual stress and greater surface microhardness and its effective depth. Conventional USM process is inevitably accompanied by some plastic damages, such as pit and crack defects. The damages, however, can be eliminated to some extent during the EUSM process. These enhancements may be attributed to the thermal and athermal effects caused by electropulsing treatment, which accelerates the mobility of dislocations in the dynamic recrystallization process.

Inhomogeneity may lead to premature failure and operationally determines the lifetime estimation of thick weld joints. Considerable novelty of this paper was the achievement of the microstructural and mechanical inhomogeneity, especially along the thickness direction, in the narrow-gap weld seam of thick gas metal arc (GMA) welded Al–Zn–Mg alloy plates. The microstructure of the weld seam was investigated by means of optical metallography, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy dispersive spectrum (EDS), after which the phase composition was ascertained according to the x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and selected area diffraction analysis by TEM (TEM-SAD). The generation of intergranular short rod-shaped MgZn2 particles changed the distribution of precipitates on the grain boundary with intragranular ellipsoidal MgZn2 particles simultaneously formed as the strengthening phase, which rendered preferable mechanical performances to the bottom layer of the weld seam. The above conclusion was farther affirmed by micro fractography and EDS test results on the fractured surface of the tensile samples. In addition, the effect of following weld passes on the microstructure and micro hardness profile of the finished weld pass was investigated.

The effects of stress-aging processing on corrosion resistance of an Al–Zn–Mg–Cu alloy were investigated. It is found that the one-stage stress-aged alloy is strongly sensitive to the electrochemical corrosion. The poor corrosion resistance of the one-stage stress-aged alloy can be attributed to fine intragranular aging precipitates and continuous distribution of grain boundary precipitates. Meanwhile, the incomplete precipitation of solute atoms results in high electrochemical activity of aluminum matrix. However, when the alloy is two-stage stress-aged, the corrosion resistance is greatly improved. Furthermore, the corrosion resistance decreases firstly and then increases with increasing the first stage stress-aging temperature. Increasing external stress can enhance the corrosion resistance of the two-stage stress-aged alloy. These phenomena are mainly related to aging precipitates within grains and along grain boundaries. The coarse and relatively low-density intragranular aging precipitates, as well as the discontinuously distributed grain boundary precipitates can enhance the corrosion resistance of the stress-aged alloy.

As the core materials with excellent soft magnetic properties, Fe–6.5 wt% Si steel was fabricated by using the warm rolling process due to its extremely limited ductility and formability at room temperature. In this work, the effects of warm rolling reduction varying from 50% to 85% on the microstructure, texture, and magnetic properties of sheets were explored. The microstructure and texture evolution at the various processing steps were investigated in detail using optical microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. The results demonstrate that the finer recrystallization grains are accompanied with an increasing warm rolling reduction, and the final annealed sheets are characterized by strong α-fiber and γ-fiber textures. Accordingly, on the whole, as the increase of warm rolling reductions, the values of magnetic induction (B8, B50) in the final annealed sheets increase sharply up to a maximum value and then decrease to a certain value, and the values of iron loss (P15/50, P10/400) increase monotonically.

Recently, cold metal transfer (CMT) process has been successfully applied to weld dissimilar metals. In this paper, two different aluminum alloy AA6061-T6 and pure copper T2 lapped joints were performed by CMT with AA4043 aluminum alloy wire as the filler metal. Results indicated that sound lapped joints between aluminum alloy AA6061-T6 and pure copper T2 could be performed by CMT technology. The joint was composed of Al–Al welding joint and Al–Cu brazing joint. The Al–Al welding joint was formed between the Al weld metal and the Al base metal, and the weld metal in Al–Al welding joint was composed of α-Al solid solution, α-Al, and CuAl eutectic phase. Al–Cu brazing joint was formed between the Al weld metal and the local molten Cu base metal, and composed of three copper-weld metal interfaces with a large amount of intermetallic compounds (IMCs), i.e., CuAl2, CuAl. The optimum strength of two joints could reach up to 1.23 kN and 1.56 kN, respectively, which was mainly due to the differences of the size of Cu/Al IMCs and stress condition. In addition, the distribution of microhardness and fracture surface of two joints were observed and analyzed in detail.

On the powder surface of oxygen-ordered ZrC0.6O0.4 obtained via isothermal heating of vacancy-ordered ZrC0.6 at 300 °C, an amorphous ZrC0.6O y>0.4 layer in nanoscaled thickness is found to form if the heating lasts long enough. With the help of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) measurements, the amorphous formation is recognized to originate from diffusion of superfluous oxygen atoms into Zr-tetrahedral centers in the surface area, thus leading to severe distortion of the lattice. In situ investigation of HRTEM, SAED, and electron energy loss spectra demonstrates that under electron irradiation of sufficient dose, the amorphous ZrC0.6O y>0.4 layer transforms into a cubic ZrO2−x layer with the same orientation as the underlying ordered ZrC0.6O0.4.

Using first-principles calculations, the fundamental understanding of the structure, electronic, elastic, lattice dynamic, and optic properties of three Mg-based ternary chalcopyrite semiconductors have been analyzed in detail within density functional theory scheme. To ensure an accurate determination of our calculated results, we considered five popular generalized gradient approximation formulations such as Perdew and Wang, Perdew–Burke and Ernzerhof (PBE), revised PBE, modified PBE, and Armiento–Mattson 2005 as well as local-density approximation (LDA) for the exchange-correlation potentials. It is found that all the calculated values of band gap for these compounds are underestimated compared to existing studies, while LDA-based functional gives better results than others. The electronic band structure demonstrated that these compounds have direct band gap at the Γ point in the Brillouin zone. It is observed that these compounds are mechanically stable in the chalcopyrite structure.

The effect of Co on element segregation and microstructure is investigated in the third generation Ni-based single crystal superalloys with 4, 8.5, and 11.5 wt% Co addition. The results show that the increase of Co content leads to a severe element segregation in as-cast microstructure. After heat treatment, the size of γ′ phase is slightly reduced with Co content increase. During the thermal exposure, the γ′ phase coarsens gradually but its coarsening rate decreases with increasing Co content. In addition, some acicular and blocky topologically close-packed (TCP) phases are precipitated in 4% Co and 8.5% Co alloys. However, no TCP phase can be found in 11.5% Co alloy. Finally, it may be concluded that although a higher Co content is harmful for the element segregation, it is beneficial to maintain the cuboidal morphology of γ′ phase, decrease its coarsening rate, and impede the precipitation of TCP phase.

Continuous repetitive upsetting and extrusion (CRUE) processing was performed to investigate its effects on microstructures, mechanical properties and texture characteristics of a 2A66 Al–Li alloy. The results show that the average grain size is effectively refined from initial as-extruded ∼140 µm to ∼4 µm after 3 CRUE passes. The grain refinement is the combined effect of continuous dynamic recrystallization and discontinuous dynamic recrystallization. The texture intensity tends to be weaker and new cube texture is gradually developed with increasing CRUE passes. In addition, the fraction of high angle grain boundaries increases to 86.37% after 3 CRUE passes. Tensile test results reveal that the ductility is greatly enhanced with modest reduction in strength after CRUE processing. The variation in mechanical properties may be mainly due to the decrease of dislocation density and weakening of texture.
