The pitting corrosion resistance of AL-6XN PLUS™ superaustenitic stainless steel, 304L, 316L, and 317L austenitic stainless steels was investigated using the cyclic polarization technique. These materials were evaluated in the as received condition and heat-treated at temperatures between 500 °C and 900 °C for 72 h. A thermodynamic simulation was performed using the software Thermocalc® to predict possible deleterious phases in selected temperatures. The simulations have predicted the sigma phase in the selected temperature range. An aqueous solution of sulfuric acid and sodium chloride was used as electrolyte in the corrosion tests. The results showed that pitting corrosion was not observed on the samples of AL-6XN PLUS™ steel. The 304L steel suffered pitting corrosion. All the polarization curves of this steel showed hysteresis characteristics of pitting corrosion. The 316L and 317L steels were resistant to pitting corrosion, but susceptible to crevice corrosion.

The effect of Ta concentration on the fundamental mechanical properties of W–Ta alloys has been studied from first principles study. The lattice constants, the cell volumes, and the formation energies of the W1−x Ta x (x = 0.0625, 0.125, 0.1875, 0.25, 0.3125, 0.5, 0.5625, 0.625, 0.75) alloys were calculated. It is shown that Ta alloying in bcc W lattice is an infinite solid solution and the W0.5Ta0.5 have the lowest formation energy. With the optimized geometry and lattice, the elastic constants are calculated and then the elastic moduli and other mechanical parameters are derived. Results show that although the mechanical strength of the W–Ta alloys is lower than that of pure W metal, it is much higher than that of pure Ta metal. On the other hand, the B/G ratio and the Poisson's ratio of the W–Ta alloys is much higher than that of pure W, and even higher than that of pure Ta, indicating that Ta alloying can improve the ductility of bcc W substantially.

Mechanics of deformation in miniaturized indirect extrusion (IE) and their resulting process outcomes are shown to be dependent on the dimensional scale of the plastic deformation zone. Using optically transparent dies as prototypes, the effect of process length-scales on the strain, strain-rate, and rotation fields is elucidated using digital image correlation. In this regard, in situ experiments were performed on commercially pure Lead (Pb) and Aluminum (Al 1100) as prototypical nonwork/work hardening materials. By overlaying these measurements with microstructural characterization via electron backscattered diffraction, the effect of deformation volume on process–structure mappings is identified. Herein, visco-plastic self-consistent framework-based modeling of the evolution of crystallographic textures was investigated to achieve insights into the trajectories of microstructure evolution and process outcomes during IE. These findings provide a beneficial background about characteristics of plastic deformation zone and its distribution to optimize and control the properties of miniaturized components.

Narrow gap submerged arc welding method accompanied with multilayer and multipass technology was used to manufacture advanced 9Cr and CrMoV dissimilarly welded joint used as a newly developed turbine rotor. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the high cycle fatigue (HCF) behavior of the welded joint at room temperature. Uniaxial-stress controlled HCF tests at stress ratio R = −1 were performed with specimens chipped from the welded joint of mockup and the S–N curve up to 1.0 × 108 cycle lifetime was obtained. It was found that the fracture location transferred from heat affected zone (HAZ) of CrMoV side to weld metal (WM) with decreasing stress amplitude. The microstructure of the welded joint was characterized and microstructure diversity was found to be responsible for the failure locations both in the CrMoV–HAZ and WM. Fracture morphology of failure samples were also investigated by a scanning electron microscope. It is detected that the stress amplitude required to drive the inclusion to be the crack initiation of the CrMoV–HAZ lies behind the transition. With decreasing stress amplitudes, void in the WM more easily tends to be the initiation of a fatigue crack than inclusion.

The aim of the present work was to study the effect of the finishing rolling temperature on interpass recrystallization promotion of an Nb-stabilized AISI 430 steel, via torsion tests simulation of a Steckel mill. The occurrence of interpass recrystallization was investigated by interrupting the tests before predetermined passes and analyzing the samples via electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The results revealed that interpass recrystallization can be promoted by decreasing the initial hot rolling temperature; which results in increased strain hardening during the passes and therefore, increased stored energy for recrystallization. The torsion test results concurred with those obtained by EBSD measurements. Furthermore, an optimum temperature range of 900–840 °C was found to promote interpass recrystallization during hot rolling.

Zeolite–zeolite composite composed of alumina-rich hierarchically porous ZSM-5 cores and high-silicon MFI shells was prepared by a hydrothermal synthesis procedure, in which a commercial ZSM-5 zeolite with a SiO2/Al2O3 of 36 was treated by an alkaline solution and then used as a supporter for epitaxial growth of a polycrystalline Silicalite-1 zeolite shell (denoted as MMZsa). Acid sites associated with framework Al on exterior surfaces of ZSM-5 zeolite cores are therefore passivated in different degrees by the epitaxial MFI zeolite shell. The structural, crystalline, and textural properties of the as-synthesized samples were characterized by x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), N2 adsorption-desorption, in situ IR spectra of pyridine and NH3-TPD. Aluminum species were observed to transfer from the alumina-rich cores to the high-silica shells. The adjustable thickness and SiO2/Al2O3 ratio of the shell offer the as-synthesized composite a potential and high-efficiency catalyst for methanol conversion into gasoline and diesel. As compared with the commercial ZSM-5 zeolite, the composite catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic performances with a longer catalytic life as well as a higher conversion and a slightly higher yield of diesel oil.

TiO2 nanofibers (TNFs) with different anatase/rutile phase ratios were fabricated using electrospinning technique followed by the annealing at different temperatures. The effect of annealing temperatures on their morphology, structural, and optical properties and photocatalytic activity was investigated. The photocatalytic performance of TNFs was evaluated by degradation of methyl orange (MO) in aqueous solution under the irradiation of simulated solar light. Annealing temperature significantly influenced photocatalytic degradation of MO due to the incorporation of rutile phase which suppresses recombination of photoactivated electron and hole pairs. Turnover frequency (TOF) of MO degradation was introduced to describe the intrinsic activity of TNFs. TNFs acquired best anatase/rutile phase ratio (A/R = 83/17) when annealed at 650 °C, resulting in highest TOF value 2394 h−1, two times higher as compared to P25 with similar anatase/rutile phase ratio (A/R = 85/15). Appropriate crystalline structure could be the reason for good photocatalytic activity as well as intrinsic activity of TNFs.

The microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of ultrafine-grained (UFG) Al sheets subjected to accumulative roll bonding (ARB) and subsequent cryorolling was studied. Cryorolling can suppress the dynamic softening of UFG Al sheets subjected to ARB at room temperature. After the third ARB pass, the grains are slightly refined as the number of ARB passes increases. However, the grains are significantly refined further during cryorolling. The grain size of 460 nm achieved after the third ARB pass is reduced to 290 nm after two cryorolling passes with total reduction ratio 80%. Sheets subjected to ARB + cryorolling show improved mechanical properties compared to only ARB-processed sheets due to a change in the fraction of high-angle boundaries and elongated grains. The deformation mechanism for ultrafine grains at room temperature is determined by grain boundary sliding or dislocation-based recovery, while it is governed by dislocation glide at cryogenic temperature.

The effect of annealing treatment on the microstructures, mechanical, and wear properties of a CuZnAlMnSiNiCr brass alloy is investigated. The results indicate that nanosized Mn5Si3 particles are observed to precipitate from the β phase at temperatures above 750 °C. After annealing at 800 °C for 4 h, the formation of finely, coherent precipitates dispersed within the matrix results in the great improvement of strength, hardness and thus the high wear resistance, which can be proven by the decreased wear rates and friction coefficients. According to the examination of the wear topography, adhesive, abrasive, and oxidative wear are found to be the major wear forms during the dry sliding wear. After the precipitation-hardening treatment, the adhesion and abrasion decrease, and few spallings and cracks are observed on the worn surfaces. In addition, the wear behavior of the alloy is found to be strongly dependent on its strength and hardness.

The effect on the mechanical properties at room temperature of Li and Ag additions to the Fe–Al (40 at.%)-based alloy produced by conventional casting were evaluated in this work. Alloying elements were added into a previously molted Fe–(40 at.%) aluminum-based alloy, stirred, and then cast into sand molds to directly produce tensile specimens. To determine the mechanical properties, tensile tests and hardness measurements were performed. The additions of both Ag and Li showed an increase in ductility and tensile strength of the intermetallic alloys. In addition, hardness was substantially increased with the Li addition. Lithium additions promoted a solid solution hardening, whereas 3 at.% of Ag additions promoted ductility due to a microstructural modification and to the formation of a soft Ag3Al phase. Characterization by both optical and electronic microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy microanalysis, and x-ray diffraction supported the mechanical characterization.

Bi2Sr2Co2Ox (BSC-222) bulk materials have been prepared in air by single hot pressing or partial melting followed by hot pressing. Thermal transport properties of as-prepared samples were compared with BSC-222 samples prepared by single partial melting. Samples prepared through hot pressing have a high bulk density and improved preferential grain orientation. Bulk density and preferential grain orientation are significantly better in samples processed by partial melting followed by hot pressing. In samples prepared by partial melting, the presence of sub-micrometer-sized secondary phases Bi0.75Sr0.25Ox, Sr-based oxide, and CoO, is observed. The lattice contribution to the total thermal conductivity decreases significantly in partially melted BSC-222 samples. By using a classical phonon transport model, this result demonstrates that the decrease in lattice thermal conductivity in partially melted BSC-222 samples may be linked not only to porosity but also to the presence of defects, induced by partial melting process, which may play an important role in phonon scattering.

Hot deformation behavior of Incoloye028 alloy was investigated by conducting hot compression tests on Gleeble-3800 simulator in the temperature range of 1223–1473 K and the strain rate range of 0.1–50 s−1. True stress–true strain curves showed that the flow stress increases with the decrease of deformation temperature and the increase of strain rate. The constitutive equations of Incoloy028 alloy were obtained by introducing Zener–Hollomom parameter, the flow behavior can be described by the hyperbolic sine function and the activation energy changes with strain rate and temperature significantly. The hot working maps of Incoloy028 alloy were proposed on basis of dynamic materials model. The hot working maps for different strains indicated that there were two instability zones, one zone is in the temperatures range of 1423–1473 K and strain rate range of 0.1–50 s−1, and another zone is in the temperature range of 1223–1423 K and strain rate range of 0.6–1 s−1. The reasonable hot working temperature range is 1423–1473 K when strain rate is more than 50 s−1.

The high-temperature flow behavior and flow stress sensitivity of BT25y alloy were investigated. Results show that hot deformation is accompanied by the dynamic competition between work hardening and flow softening. The strain rate sensitivity exponent m tends to decrease with the strain rate after a first rise, and reaches the maximum at strain rate of 0.1 s−1. There is a large temperature range exhibiting m values above 0.2 at strain rates of 0.01–0.1 s−1. The temperature sensitivity exponent s shows an overall dropping trend with elevated temperature. The strain hardening exponent n first decreases and then increases with the strain at strain rate of 0.01 s−1. Large positive n values lie in areas with high strain rate, and small negative n values are located in areas with lower temperature and small strain rate. Secondary lamellar α appears near the phase transition temperature. The microstructure presents elongated characteristics at high strain rate.

Hot deformation characteristics of 2304 duplex stainless steel were analyzed by hot compression tests at temperature range of 850–1150 °C and strain rates of 0.001–1 s−1. The flow curves at low temperatures and high strain rates were suggesting sluggish dynamic recovery (DRV) in ferrite and partial dynamic recrystallization (DRX) in austenite. However, at high temperatures and low strain rates, the flow curves showed implied the domination of DRV in ferrite. The hyperbolic sine equation with activation energy of 508 kJ/mol could relate the processing parameters. Microstructural observations showed that DRV in ferrite is the controlling mechanism at all deformation conditions. However, at high temperatures and strain rates partial DRX could also occur in austenite. Based on the law of mixture and Baragar’s equations a modified model was proposed to consider work hardening and dynamic softening in the constituents. The model could satisfactorily predict the flow curves at different deformation regimes.

The discovery of Heusler alloys has revolutionized the research field of intermetallics due to the ease with which one can derive potential candidates for multifunctional applications. During recent years, many half Heusler alloys have been investigated for their thermoelectric properties. The f-electron-based rare-earth ternary half Heusler compound DyPdBi has its f energy levels located close to the Fermi energy level. Other research efforts have emphasized that such materials have good thermoelectric capabilities. We have explored using first principles the electronic band structure of DyPdBi by use of different exchange correlation potentials in the density functional theoretical framework. Transport coefficients that arise in the study of thermoelectric properties of DyPdBi have been calculated and have illustrated its potential as an efficient thermoelectric material. Both the theoretically estimated Seebeck coefficient and the power factor agree well with the available experimental results. Our calculations illustrate that it is essential to include spin–orbit coupling in these models of f-electron half Heusler materials.

The high-frequency vibration technology was introduced to relieve the quenched residual stress in the Cr12MoV steel based on the high-frequency vibration system that mainly consisted of an electromagnetic vibrator and an amplitude boost unit. The high-frequency vibratory stress relief (VSR) experiments were conducted to study the effectiveness of the high-frequency vibration technology. In addition, the high-frequency vibration plasticity model was developed based on the thermal activation theory to reveal the mechanism of the high-frequency VSR. The results show that the high-frequency VSR has good effects on eliminating residual stress, while the surface hardness for the Cr12MoV steel remains almost the same. Moreover, there are no changes in the grain size of the Cr12MoV steel during the high-frequency VSR, while the dislocation density for the Cr12MoV steel during the high-frequency VSR decreases by 27.21%. The decrease of dislocation density in the Cr12MoV steel is the essence of residual stress relaxation. The findings confirm the significant effects of high-frequency vibration on metal plasticity and provide a basis to understand the underlying mechanism of the high-frequency VSR.

The role of bottom-up and top-down synthesis methods on the nanotribological response of few layer graphene (FLG) in air and various liquid environments is reported. Oxidized FLG adhesion against Si increases by a factor of 2 as compared to non-oxidized samples. Also, it is reported that the FLG center-to-edge adhesion typically exhibits a decreasing tendency. In air, a highly lubricious nanotribological response (0.03–0.04) of both bottom-up and top-down prepared samples is measured. The frictional behavior of bottom-up synthesized FLG in different liquid environments is found to depend on the absence or presence of viscous aggregates in the respective liquid. A Stribeck-like behavior is suggested for viscous synthetic lubricants, such as silicone, present as the third body in the FLG/Si tip system. Such nanoscale behavior, indicating transitions in different lubrication regimes, may be particularly important for the further understanding of liquid–graphene interfaces in novel tribological and device applications.

Ni-doped ZnO hollow microspheres were fabricated by calcining the mixture of zinc and nickel citrate precursors at 500 °C for 2 h. The structure, composition, Barrett–Emmett–Teller specific surface area, and optical properties of Ni-doped ZnO samples were characterized by x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, wave length dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, and ultraviolet (UV)-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The photocatalytic results demonstrated that the as-synthesized Ni-doped ZnO microcrystals possessed much higher photocatalytic activity than pure ZnO in the decomposition of methylene blue under UV-light irradiation. The present work suggests that Ni-doped ZnO hollow microspheres can be applied as an efficient photocatalyst for water polluted by some chemically stable azo dyes.
