Effects of Mo addition on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and abrasive wear properties of an oriented bulk Fe2B crystal have been investigated systematically in the present paper. Five groups of pure Fe2B samples with different Mo contents have been examined by optical microscope, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope integrated with energy disperse spectroscopy, microhardness tester, and three-point bending testing of fracture toughness. The results indicate that Mo tends to segregate on the grain boundaries after doping; with increasing Mo addition, interplanar spacing of the (002) crystal plane of Fe2B decreases firstly and then increases slightly while that of (200) increases gradually; microhardness on the transversal section changes little while that on the longitudinal section increases firstly and then decreases [possessing the opposite trend to interplanar spacing of (002)]; fracture toughness and wear resistance of both transversal and longitudinal samples can be improved to some extent with Mo addition less than 2.0 wt%. In conclusion, appropriate Mo addition plays a positive role in the improvement of mechanical properties of oriented bulk Fe2B.

A Cu–0.13Cr–0.074Ag (wt%) alloy has been synthesized by the nonvacuum melting and casting followed by thermal-mechanical treatment, and microstructure and mechanical properties have been tailored to make a trade-off between the strength and the electrical conductivity. Results illuminated that the designed alloy has a tensile strength of 473 MPa, a hardness of 140 HV, a yield strength of 446 MPa, an elongation of 10.5%, and an electrical conductivity of 94.5% IACS. Microstructure observations of the samples aged at 480 °C showed that: an fcc structure Cr-phase with a cube-on-cube orientation relationship with the Cu matrix was formed as aged for 15 min, while an ordered bcc structure Cr phase with B2 structure formed as aged for 2 h. The 3DAP results revealed that the Cr was formed to be precipitates and the Ag was formed as solutes distributing evenly in matrix. The high electrical conductivity was ascribed to the Cr element precipitated from the Cu matrix, Ag dissolved in the Cu matrix had little effect on the scattering of Cu electron.

Two- and three-dimensional assemblies of carbon nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes and graphene are necessary to harness their remarkable physicochemical properties in many clean energy, electronics, and biomedical applications. Herein we report a facile, economical, and versatile method for layer-by-layer fabrication of chemically-crosslinked carbon nanomaterial assemblies by ultrasonic spray coating combined with radical-initiated crosslinking reaction. The chemical, surface, and mechanical properties of the carbon nanomaterial coatings were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning- and transmission-electron microscopy, and nano-dynamic mechanical analysis. Our results indicate that the macroscopic 2D assemblies of crosslinked carbon nanotubes or graphene nanoparticles have surface uniformity, are chemically-crosslinked, and are mechanically robust. We further provide proof-of-concept demonstration of fabricating free-standing, porous, 3D single-walled carbon nanotube structures. Taken together, the results opens avenues toward adapting our method to enable 3D printing or additive manufacturing of all-carbon nanomaterial structures.

Two austenitic stainless steels of strongly different stacking fault energies (SFEs) and correspondingly different stabilities of the austenite phase were studied with respect to their very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) behavior. The metastable austenitic stainless steel 304L shows a very pronounced transient behavior and a fatigue limit in the VHCF regime. The higher SFE of the 316L steel results in a less pronounced transient cyclic deformation behavior. The plastic shear is more localized, and the formation of deep intrusions leads to microcrack initiation. However, the propagation of such microcracks is impeded by α′-martensite formed very localized within the shear bands. A comprehensive description of the microstructural changes governing the cyclic deformation including the transient resonant behavior was developed and transferred into a mechanism-based model. Simulation results were correlated with the observed deformation evolution and the change of the resonant behavior of specimens during VHCF loading providing a profound understanding of the VHCF-specific deformation behavior.

Al1.3CrFeNi eutectic high entropy alloy was designed and prepared by arc-melting to investigate the microstructure and oxidation behaviors at 1000 °C. The XRD pattern shows that this alloy had a double bcc/B2 structure. SEM images indicates that the microstructure of the alloy is composed of two precipitates of [Cr, Fe] solid solution and NiAl intermetallic, which form the typical eutectic structure. To explore the thermal application of Al1.3CrFeNi alloy, the oxidation behavior of Al1.3CrFeNi alloy at 1000 °C was investigated. From XRD and SEM results, it could be concluded that Al2O3 and Cr2O3 were the predominant oxides during the oxidation process. In addition, spinel like FeCr2O4 was also observed in the oxide scale. According to the analysis of oxide precipitates, the whole process of oxides’ formation was discussed and a simplified oxidation dynamic model of Al1.3CrFeNi alloy at 1000 °C was obtained. This could promote the development of thermal applications in multi-component alloys field.

Two-dimensional dislocation dynamics (DD) simulations are performed to simulate the increase in strength of ferritic superalloys strengthened by ordered β′(B2)–NiAl precipitates. Parametric studies for three precipitate volume fractions (10, 13, and 20%) and various radii (from 1 to 75 nm) predict strengthening via a mixture of precipitate bypassing and shearing by single- and super-dislocations of edge or screw character. DD strength contributions for various precipitate radii (for a 13% volume fraction) are compared to analytical models for ordered precipitate strengthening: good agreement exists in the overaged state, but not in the peak-aged and underaged states for either dislocation configurations. DD strength contributions, converted to hardness values, are compared to experimental hardness values from previously reported literature on a ferritic superalloy [Fe–10Cr–10Ni–6.5Al–3.4Mo–0.25Zr–0.005B (wt%)] aged at various temperatures and times. DD hardness values from the single-edge dislocation simulations accurately predict the experimental peak hardness, but not the under- and over-aged hardness values or trends. By incorporating the effect of secondary NiAl nanoprecipitates formed on cooling and solid solution strengthening of Fe in the primary precipitates, reasonable agreement is achieved in the overaged condition.

Self-assembly of biocompatible nanoparticles is part of a promising field in drug delivery and biomaterials. Virus capsids are an example of nanoparticles capable of being tethered with functional groups for specific targeting. There have been experimental efforts on grafting polymers to virus capsids to synthesize tailored nanostructures. To provide insight at the nanoscale, we perform a highly coarse-grained molecular dynamics study, simulating the self-aggregation of cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV) capsids decorated with polyethylene glycol (PEG) and PEG polylactic acid (PLA) block polymers. We examined the effects of grafting architecture and volume fraction on equilibrated clusters. Characterization of the aggregation dynamics are summarized by the radius of gyration of the clusters, coordination number distributions, and average cluster size. When the system and methods are parameterized with respect to atomistic models or empirical results, the results can serve as the basis in broadly mapping the theoretical design space for controlled self-assembly of polymer-decorated virus capsids.

The element Re is known to be a very potent strengthener concerning the creep properties of Ni-base superalloys. In this paper the influence of Re on the properties of new γ′-strengthened Co-base superalloys is addressed. Atom probe tomography reveals that Re partitions preferentially to the γ phase, but not as pronounced as in ni-base superalloys. Nanoindentation and micro-pillar compression tests of the γ′ phase indicate an increase of the hardness and the critical resolved shear stress caused by a considerable concentration of Re in the γ′ phase. Creep investigations show that the positive effect of Re is by far not as pronounced as in Ni-base superalloys. Several effects, which can contribute to this behavior, such as the lower Re concentration in γ and hence a slightly reduced effective diffusion coefficient, a smaller diffusion barrier of Re in Co compared to Ni, a slightly lower lattice misfit and γ′ volume fraction of the Re-containing alloy, are discussed.

Extrusion is an efficient hot working process to aluminum production and AISI H13 (4Cr5MoSiV1) as the main material of extrusion tool suffers from fatigue and creep damage due to its extreme working condition. A new mean plastic strain life prediction has been proposed based on the energy method. In addition, statistical analysis is also taken into consideration to complement this physic-based model due to other unmeasured and unknown exogenous influences. To validate the model, a series of AISI H13 fatigue and fatigue–creep tests were conducted at 500 °C close to the practical aluminum extrusion process. The strain-controlled tests were used for obtaining the parameters, while the stress-controlled tests were utilized for validating the proposed model. It shows that the model predictions were in good agreement with the experimental results.

Effects of Zn content on microstructures and mechanical properties of as-cast Mg–4Y–xZn alloys (x = 1, 2, 3, 4) have been studied in the article. The results indicate that the X phase is formed firstly, and the X phase, X + W phases, and W phase precipitated in order when the Zn contents increased from 1 to 4 wt%. The secondary dendritic arm spacing of the tested alloys first decrease as the Zn content increases within the range of 1–2% and then it increases. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation of the four experimental alloys increase until the addition of Zn reaches to 3%, with the maximum values of 213.6 MPa and 11.82%, respectively. Besides, the fracture behaviors of Mg–4Y–1Zn, Mg–4Y–2Zn, and Mg–4Y–3Zn were a quasi-cleavage fracture, while Mg–4Y–4Zn belonged to cleavage.

As more and more SiC–SiC ceramic matrix composites or CMC’s are being used in the hot sections of gas turbine engines, there is a greater need for surface temperature measurement in these harsh conditions. Thin film sensors are ideally suited for this task since they have very small thermal masses and are nonintrusive due to their thickness. However, if the bulk properties of SiC contributed to the sensor performance (thermoelectric response) rather than those of the thin films, superior resolution, and stability could be realized. Therefore, thermocouples utilizing the SiC–SiC CMC itself as one thermoelement and thin film platinum as the other thermoelement were developed. Large and stable thermoelectric powers (as large as 250 μV/°K) were realized with these Pt:SiC (CMC) thermocouples. The advantages in using this approach for surface temperature measurement are presented as well as the effects of fiber orientation on thermoelectric response and drift.

Nanoscale biosensor technology has attracted considerable attention with its promise of revolutionizing techniques ranging from biological interfaces to rapid pathogen detection to enabling DNA data storage. Many approaches, such as nanopore sequencing, have been explored and are already achieving tremendous success; however, new sensing modalities and architectures are emerging that are envisioned for the next generation of ever more capable biosensors. These novel devices, combined with advances in machine learning, are moving concepts from simulation to experimentation and demonstration. In recent years, rapid advances have been made and many architectures have been put forward for novel approaches to biomolecular sensing using nanoelectronics, including the advent of tunnel junctions as a sensing platform. With high accuracy, sensitivity, and affordability, these sensors are predicted to drive a shift to personalized medicine and rapid diagnostics in real-time anywhere in the world. Here we give an overview of tunneling sequencing and its application in biomolecular sensing and provide a perspective on the use of scalable tunneling sequencing methods utilizing graphene as the active component.

By reflowing Cu/Sn/Ni ultrafine interconnects under a temperature gradient, a new transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding process was proposed for three-dimensional packaging applications. The evolution of the dominant (Cu,Ni)6Sn5 intermetallic compounds depends strongly on the temperature gradient. The essential cause of such dependence is attributed to the different amounts of Cu and Ni atomic fluxes being introduced into the liquid solder. Under the coupling effect of thermomigration and Cu–Ni cross-interaction, the total atomic flux of Cu and Ni is promoted. As a result, the growth of dense (Cu,Ni)6Sn5 is significantly accelerated and the formation of Cu3Sn is eliminated. The new TLP bonding process consumes only a limited amount of the Ni substrate, but much more from the Cu substrate. The mechanism for the new TLP bonding process is discussed and experimentally verified in this study.

Fatigue is one of the major failure modes of structural materials. While the effects of strengthening precipitates on the mechanical properties of heat treatable aluminum alloys during forming operations are well-studied, only little is known about the related mechanisms during fatigue. We study the influence of precipitates during low cycle fatigue of an Al–Si–Mg alloy by mechanical testing and microstructure characterisation using (scanning) transmission electron microscopy. Specifically, we have investigated under-aged, peak-aged, and over-aged precipitation states. The experiments reveal considerable influence of the precipitate state on the mechanical properties and the formed dislocation structures. Under-aged AA6016 experiences cyclic hardening accompanied by dynamic precipitation and precipitate growth during cyclic deformation, whereas peak-aged AA6016 shows a saturated cyclic stress behavior and the formation of a ‘prevein’-like dislocation structure aligned along [001]Al directions. Over-aged AA6016 exhibits cyclic softening, which is assumed to be due to frequent Orowan-looping of dislocations around incoherent precipitates.

Aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) possess great potential for transforming the fabrication of advanced interfacial materials for energy and mass transport as well as for structural composites. Realizing this potential, however, requires building a deeper understanding and exercising greater control on the atomic scale physicochemical processes underlying the bottom-up synthesis and self-organization of CNTs. Hence, in situ nanoscale metrology and characterization techniques were developed for interrogating CNTs as they grow, interact, and self-assemble. This article presents an overview of recent research on characterization of CNT growth by chemical vapor deposition (CVD), organized into three categories based on the growth stage, for which each technique provides information: (I) catalyst preparation and treatment, (II) catalytic activation and CNT nucleation, and (III) CNT growth and termination. Combining all three categories together provides insights into building the process–structure relationship, and paves the way for producing tailored CNT structures having desired properties for target applications.

The shear-band propagation in bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) during deformation plays a key role in determining their macroscopic ductility. In this work, the shear band propagation during plastic deformation was investigated in the Cu46Zr46Al8 BMG and its in situ or ex situ prepared BMG composites. Compared with the brittle BMG, both types of ductile BMG composites show a more stable shear banding behavior as revealed by a larger power-law scaling exponent obtained from statistical analysis of serrations recorded in compressive curves. A higher cut-off elastic energy density (δc) linked with the multiplication of shear bands is observed for the in situ prepared BMG composites. However, the ex situ fabricated BMG composites show an almost equivalent or slightly larger δc since the dominant shear band but not multiple shear bands mainly governs their deformation. Such observations imply that the shear banding stability of BMGs during deformation is enhanced not only by inducing multiple shear bands but also by obstructing the movement of the dominant shear band at its driven path.

The effect of longitudinal alternating current (LAC) on the growth of the interfacial layers of the copper cladding aluminum (CCA) composite flat bar during isothermal annealing was investigated. The results showed that the application of LAC could remarkably inhibit the growth of interfacial compounds as well as improve the interfacial bonding property of the CCA composite. When the CCA flat bars were annealed at temperatures ranging from 723 to 773 K for 1 h with a LAC density higher than 0.625 A/mm2, the total thickness of the interfacial compound layers was reduced by more than 75% in comparison to CCA flat bars annealed without LAC. The reduction of the thickness of the interfacial layers resulted in an improvement of the bonding strength of the CCA composite. The mechanism of the inhibition effect was that the application of LAC could accelerate the vacancy annihilation in component metals.

The object of the present investigations was to evaluate the effect of flash butt welding parameters on microstructures and mechanical properties of HSLA 590CL welded joints in wheel rims by adjusting welding parameters separately. The amount of Widmanstatten ferrites and bainite in the weld metal, and grain size were observed with the adjustment of welding parameters. The tensile strength of welded joints met the strength requirement of wheel rims steels, but the tensile strength and tensile fracture were different in different welding parameters. Micro-hardness distributions of welded joints in different welding parameters were similar, that is the maximum micro-hardness occurred in the weld and micro-hardness decreased from the weld to base metal. A certain degree of softening phenomenon was found in the heat affected zone (HAZ), which should result from the heat input in the flash butt welding. Two failure mechanisms of wheel rims in the expanding process were investigated. The first type fractured at the HAZ and showed ductile fracture characteristics, the crack initiation located at the thinning location. The second type fractured at the weld and showed brittle fracture characteristics.

The surface hardening of Cu is an effective way to keep good electrical conductivity and increase chemical inertness. Here, Cr and Zr are introduced into Cu films to stabilize N and increase the film hardness. CuN-based alloy films are prepared on single-crystal Si(100) substrates using magnetron sputtering. Cu(Cr, N) films are mainly composed of Cu and Cr2N nanocrystals while Cu and Zr2N nanocrystals compose Cu(Zr, N) films. The thermal stability of the ternary films comes from the strong interaction between Cr (or Zr) and N which is contributing to the generation of stable nitrides. In terms of resistivity and hardness, the Cu(Cr, N) and Cu(Zr, N) films prepared at the N2/Ar ratio of 1/10 show preferable properties. Especially, the Cu86.1Zr6.1N7.8 film exhibits the highest hardness (∼4.7 GPa) and lowest resistivity (63.6 μΩ·cm). The chemical inertness of Cu film can also be improved by adding Cr–N and Zr–N. These ternary films are expected to apply for Cu surface nitrogenization.

The exaggerated grain growth, anisotropic crystallite morphology, and thermal expansion are the main reasons for the microcracking of sintered TiB2, wherein grain coarsening and anisotropic crystallite morphology are believed to be controlled by the surface stabilities of TiB2. To deeply understand the grain growth mechanism, the anisotropic stability and bonding features of TiB2 surfaces, including $\left( {11\bar 20} \right)$ , two types of (0001), and three types of $\left( {10\bar 10} \right)$ , are investigated by first-principles calculations. By employing the two-region modeling method, surface energies are calculated and the $\left( {11\bar 20} \right)$ surface is found to be more stable than (0001) and $\left( {10\bar 10} \right)$ surfaces. Hexagonal plate-like grain morphology is predicted. The different bonding conditions of surface Ti and B atoms contribute to the difference of surface structure relaxation between surfaces with Ti- and B-termination, which lead the B-terminated ones to be more stable. It is also found that the surface energies of TiB2 are much higher than those of ZrB2 with a similar structure, which may be responsible for the easy coarsening of TiB2.
