It has recently been argued by Gess (2001) that the long vowels resulting from the compensatory lengthening that emerged in the wake of preconsonantal /s/-deletion in Old French had all been shortened by the sixteenth century. Given that many of these long vowels are still present in Canadian French, this conclusion cannot possibly be correct. What will be shown here is precisely how Gess' methodology led him to obtain such counterfactual results.

Although frequent reference is made to l'on as an alternative to on in standard grammars, judgements vary as to whether or not l'on is used at all in spoken French. This question is investigated here by treating l'on ∼ on as a sociolinguistic variable. A review of the historical, dialectal and cross-linguistic background is followed by an examination of the traditional ‘rules’ for the use of l'on, as described by Vaugelas and reconsidered by Goosse for written French. The frequency of l'on in speech, and the contexts in which it is used, are then examined in a corpus of informal interviews, and some comparisons are made with a corpus of TV news reports. (The total N of on + l'on in the two corpora is 3,549.) In general, l'on can be viewed as a ‘long form’, marking formality and comparable in some respect to l'un(e), cela, ce sont and nous -ons. But there are some individuals who use l'on even when speaking informally, especially in relative clauses opening with que.

This is the first Special Issue of the Journal of French Language Studies, which will from now on have one thematic number per year. This issue is devoted to the acquisition of French as a second language.

This introductory article introduces the field of second language acquisition (SLA) to specialists in French linguistics who are not familiar with it. Its purpose is to present a map of the field which will then enable the reader to better situate the following in depth articles which present focused theoretical and empirical investigations as they apply to French. The first part summarises recent, and sometimes apparently contradictory, research findings. The second part explores the theoretical approaches which have been most influential in recent investigations, outlining where each of these approaches originates, and which aspects of the SLA process it investigates.

Plusieurs travaux ont été consacrés à ce jour à puis (Chevalier et Molho, 1986; Hansen, 1998; Reyle, 1998; Bras, Le Draoulec et Vieu, 2001). En revanche, à l'exception de quelques études ciblées (Laurendeau, 1982 et 1983; Laks, 1983), pis a généralement été tenu pour une variante dans la prononciation de puis et a rarement été examiné pour lui-même. L'objectif du présent article, consacré à pis dans son usage en français québécois, est double. Il s'agit:

– de dégager les spécificités sémantiques du marqueur lorsqu'il est connecteur (propositionnel et textuel). Cela conduit à le situer par rapport à et et à proposer une hypothèse, basée sur l'opposition ‘connecteur associatif/connecteur dissociatif’, susceptible d'expliquer pourquoi les marqueurs en cause se trouvent en distribution complémentaire dans l'oral familier, bien qu'ils expriment tous deux un type de connexion neutre;

– d'identifier les sens de pis lorsqu'il est marqueur discursif et de mettre en évidence les liens qui les unissent entre eux, de même que les liens qui les rattachent à l'emploi où le marqueur agit à titre de connecteur.

Certains éléments linguistiques sont analysés dans les discours de cinq partis en course pour les élections législatives de juin 2002. Ils montrent l'existence d'un continuum linguistique: d'un côté, la droite utilise un langage formel; à l'autre extrême, les petits partis de gauche utilisent davantage les tournures caractéristiques de l'oral. Entre ces deux pôles, le parti socialiste utilise des éléments oraux mêlés à un langage formel. Ce continuum reflète l'accommodation des candidats envers l'électorat: la formalité de la langue fait appel aux électeurs traditionnels et éduqués alors que les formes familières attirent les électeurs des classes plus populaires.

Human beings have a genetically-determined capacity to walk, rather than to fly or swim. People can learn to swim, but it is not something that is genetically programmed. Do humans have a genetically-determined capacity to acquire language? Universal Grammar is a theory that assumes that they do. Except in cases of genetic disorder, humans have specialised mental architecture which is uniform across the species in its initial state, and which determines the ways in which samples of language encountered are converted into mental grammars. The specialised architecture is Universal Grammar, and it underlies our capacity to acquire particular languages like English, French, Chinese and so on. Two questions that need to be asked immediately about Universal Grammar if it is to be of any interest in understanding the acquisition of French as a second language are: (i) What evidence is there that Universal Grammar is operating when people who have already acquired a native language learn French as a second language? (ii) What insight does the adoption of a theory of Universal Grammar bring to understanding the processes involved, the course of development over time and the nature of the end state grammars that learners achieve? The article presents empirical evidence from a selection of studies bearing on these questions. It will be argued that the assumption that humans have mental architecture dedicated specifically to language acquisition – Universal Grammar – even in the case of second language acquisition, has allowed considerable progress to be made in understanding second language French.

Cellard (1979: 19) avançait de façon quelque peu impressionniste que ‘le passé simple se rencontrait beaucoup plus souvent dans les comptes rendus de rencontres sportives de notre journal que dans toute autre catégorie de textes’. Même si un tel passé perfectif était le vecteur idéal du rapport d'un exploit sportif au déroulement chronologique, la réalité des textes nous offre un panorama nettement diversifié. Une compétition acharnée se joue avec d'autres tiroirs verbaux (passé composé, imparfait, présent) qui, chacun, offre une présentation différente des procès. Après une brève présentation théorique de chaque tiroir, nous entamerons une étude de corpus basée sur des textes de presse francophone. Nous conclurons que le panorama temporel du compte rendu sportif contemporain pourrait résulter de contraintes extra-linguistiques comme le type de publication et l'évolution des médias.

This paper deals with the relationship between rules and conventionality, as reflected in a case study of the two structures N1de N2 and N1du N2. Most occurrences of these can be explained via two rules which evoke ease of referent identification and are a subset of the principles governing the ± definiteness opposition in French. Via dictionaries and Google searches, however, we detect variation that our rules cannot predict, typically when N2 is non-countable and abstract. Local semantic contrasts, i.e. dependent on the lexical content of N1 or N2, further complicate the picture. We conclude that Coseriu's Norm, alias conventionality, must be recognized as a factor coexisting with the rules.

This article describes the development of temporal reference and clause-combining in the acquisition of French L2 by adult Moroccan Arabic L1 speakers. The contribution of iconicity and of transfer from L1 in this development is discussed. The path towards grammaticalisation is less clearly marked in the domain of clause combining than in the domain of temporal reference, where after use of lexical and pragmatic means, inflection on the verb develops. Grammaticalised subordination is rarely used, except for circumstancial clauses. Paratactic devices such as clefting and NP copy tend to be used for discursive functions such as the introduction of background information in narratives, for instance.

L'objectif de cet article est de revoir et d'approfondir la description du verbe commencer entreprise dans Peeters (1993b), en profitant de l'enseignement de Georges Kleiber, dont nous exploitons le principe de la métonymie intégrée et l'idée que la construction commencer + objet direct est d'ordre métaphorique. Ce n'est qu'un début, puisqu'on s'occupera avant tout des constructions du type ‘commencer à + infinitif’. Comme, depuis 1993, d'importants progrès ont été réalisés dans le domaine de la métalangue sémantique naturelle d'Anna Wierzbicka, que notre description avait pour but de faire mieux connaître, une mise à jour s'impose de ce côté-là aussi.

La présente étude examine la question du degré d'autonomisation de la variété de français en usage dans la Communauté Wallonie-Bruxelles par rapport au français standard. Nous proposons d'abord une revue critique des réponses apportées par certains auteurs à cette question, qui souligne des carences méthodologiques récurrentes dans de nombreux travaux. Les éléments de réponse basés sur l'étude des représentations des locuteurs sont également pris en considération. Nous montrons ensuite comment les enquêtes menées actuellement par le centre de recherche VALIBEL tentent de dépasser les limites des recherches antérieures et nous conduisent à réévaluer l'importance de la variation diatopique du français en Belgique.

Nous proposons ici des stades de développement du français acquis par les adultes suédophones, formulés comme profils grammaticaux d'apprenants à des niveaux différents. Cette proposition se fonde sur les résultats empiriques des travaux menés au sein de deux projets différents sur l'acquisition du français L2 des apprenants suédophones. À partir d'itinéraires acquisitionnels nous proposons six stades, qui s'étendent des débuts de l'acquisition jusqu'à la production d'apprenants quasi-natifs. Ces itinéraires, et les stades que nous essayons d'en déduire, reflètent l'acquisition du français de l'apprenant suédophone, dans des situations orales spontanées où elle/il doit avoir recours à ses connaissances automatiques. Le cadre de cette étude est donc descriptif et empirique. Un objectif ultérieur est de servir de base à une évaluation du niveau grammatical d'un certain apprenant à un moment donné.

In the light of the extensive dialect leveling found in Francophone Louisiana, the suggestion made in Byers (1988) is a particularly interesting one, that the geographical distribution of qui and quoi, both meaning ‘what’, reflects the differential settlement histories of early 18th century Creoles, and Acadians, respectively. In this article I document these two interrogative patterns as to form and locales of attestation, and I explore the evidence for Byer's claim, showing that a strong case can be made by considering not only settlement history but also the interrogatives of Louisiana Creole, the origins of which arguably predate the arrival of the Acadians in Louisiana.

The present contribution presents an overview of studies in French as a second (L2) and/or foreign language that consider the effects of extralinguistic variables (mostly instructional, experiential and situational factors) on the development of sociolinguistic competence. It focuses specifically on variation between informal and formal variants in phonology, morphology, morpho-syntax and the lexicon.

This article presents a comparative analysis of five quasi-experimental studies involving close to 1,200 students, ranging in age from 7 to 14, in 49 French immersion classrooms in Canada – a content-based instructional context where learners develop high levels of communicative ability yet demonstrate a levelling-off effect in their grammatical development. The studies investigated the effects of form-focused instruction on four areas known to be difficult for anglophone learners of French: perfect vs. imperfect past tense, conditional mood, second-person pronouns and grammatical gender. Findings suggest that effective form-focused instruction in immersion contexts, at least with respect to interlanguage features that have reached a developmental plateau, includes a balanced distribution of opportunities for noticing, language awareness and controlled practice with feedback. Less effective instructional options overemphasise negotiation for meaning in oral tasks where message comprehensibility and communication strategies circumvent the need for learners to move beyond the use of interlanguage forms.
