Coating of filtration membranes with a polymer brush holds great promise for efficiently preventing the deposition of fouling particles. The polymer chains are compressed by incoming particles, carried with the permeation flow towards the membrane, and consequently exert a repulsive force that acts to keep the particles away from the membrane surface. Here, we theoretically investigate the effect of a polymer brush coating on the permeation-induced hydrodynamic force, $F_{h}$, pulling a particle towards the membrane, and its balance with the steric repulsion exerted by the compressing brush, resisting the particle's approach. Lubrication theory yields an ordinary differential equation for the pressure, from which $F_{h}$ is calculated numerically. Further, an asymptotic analysis is performed for the limiting cases of a dilute or dense brush, providing analytic expressions that demonstrate how brush properties affect $F_{h}$. Finally, the equilibrium position of a particle is evaluated by considering a balance between the opposing forces. The results provide an upper boundary for the brush properties, beyond which the brush is barely compressed under conditions typical of membrane filtration processes. Further increasing the brush density or thickness only decreases the total system permeance, resulting in increased energy consumption. The results shed light on the mechanisms by which a polymer brush affects the forces acting on a foulant particle, providing quantitative measures for assessing the potential efficacy of brush coatings.

An experimental campaign was conducted to examine the impact of an abrupt change in surface geometry on hypersonic boundary-layer instability waves. The primary test configuration consisted of a $5^{\circ }$ half-angle, nominally sharp cone with a $15^{\circ }$ half-angle flare attachment. Tests were conducted at Mach 6 with the unit Reynolds number varying from $3.0\times 10^6$ to $4.9\times 10^6\ \textrm {m}^{-1}$. The $10^{\circ }$ compression was sufficient to create a small separation region at the cone–flare junction at these conditions. Ultra-high-speed schlieren (822 kHz) revealed the propagation of second-mode disturbances with frequencies between 200 and 300 kHz within the upstream boundary layer; when these reached the separation region, radiation of disturbance energy along the separation shock was observed. Tests conducted at low unit Reynolds numbers demonstrated inhibited instability growth (compared to the straight-cone case) through the separation region and the development of low-frequency (${\sim }75\ \textrm {kHz}$) instabilities within the separated shear layer. At higher Reynolds numbers, however, the corner interaction was found to cause rapid breakdown near reattachment, leading to earlier transition than for a straight cone. Analysis of the schlieren images using spectral proper orthogonal decomposition provided a global picture of the structure and development of the second-mode and shear-generated instabilities.

The phenomena of self-sustained shock-wave oscillations over conical bodies with a blunt axisymmetric base subject to uniform high-speed flow are investigated in a hypersonic wind tunnel at Mach number $M = 6$. The flow and shock-wave dynamics is dictated by two non-dimensional geometric parameters presented by the three length scales of the body, two of which are associated with the conical forebody and one with the base. Time-resolved schlieren imagery from these experiments reveals the presence of two disparate states of shock-wave oscillations in the flow, and allows for the mapping of unsteadiness boundaries in the two-parameter space. Physical mechanisms are proposed to explain the oscillations and the transitions of the shock-wave system from steady to oscillatory states. In comparison with the canonical single-parameter problem of shock-wave oscillations over spiked-blunt bodies reported in literature, the two-parameter nature of the present problem introduces distinct elements to the flow dynamics.

The dynamics of intense vorticity is investigated by means of synchronisation experiments in direct numerical simulations of isotropic turbulence. By imposing similar dynamics above the dissipative range, the same structures of intense vorticity appear in two independent turbulent flows, showing that intense vorticity synchronises to large-scale dynamics. Remarkably, this synchronisation takes place despite the presence of chaos, and affects mostly the intense vorticity, but not so much the weak vorticity background, which remains comparatively asynchronous. These results pinpoint the role of large-scale dynamics in the formation of intense vorticity structures, the so-called ‘worms’, and rule out the possibility that they emerge primarily due to interactions within the dissipative range, and then grow or coalesce into elongated structures. The stretching of the vorticity vector by the large-scale rate-of-strain tensor is identified as the mechanism responsible for the synchronisation of intense vorticity, supporting the extended view of vortex stretching as a fundamental inter-scale mechanism in turbulence.

Extreme cavitation scenarios, such as water column separations in hydraulic systems during transient processes caused by large cavitation bubbles, can lead to catastrophic destruction. In the present paper, we study the onset criteria and dynamics of large cavitation bubbles in a tube. A new cavitation number $Ca_2 = {l^*}^{-1} Ca_0$ is proposed to describe the maximum length $L_{max}$ of the cavitation bubble, where $l^*$ is a non-dimensional length of the water column indicating its slenderness, and $Ca_0$ is the classic cavitation number. Combined with the onset criteria for acceleration-induced cavitation ($Ca_1<1$, Pan et al., Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA, vol. 114, 2017, pp. 8470–8474), we show that the occurrence of large cylindrical cavitation bubbles requires both $Ca_2<1$ and $Ca_1<1$ simultaneously. We also establish a Rayleigh-type model for the dynamics of large cavitation bubbles in a tube. The bubbles collapse at a finite end speed, and the time from the maximum bubble size to collapse is $T_c=\sqrt {2}\sqrt {lL_{max}}\sqrt {{\rho }/{p_\infty }}$, where $l$ is the length of the water column, $L_{max}$ is the maximum bubble length, $\rho$ is the liquid density and $p_{\infty }$ is the reference pressure in the far field. The analytical results are validated against systematic experiments using a modified ‘tube-arrest’ apparatus, which can decouple acceleration and velocity. The results in the current work can guide design and operation of hydraulic systems encountering transient processes.

Exact solutions are found for an $N$-fold rotationally symmetric, steadily rotating hollow vortex where a continuous real parameter governs its deformation from a circular shape and $N \ge 2$ is an integer. The vortex shape is found as part of the solution. Following the designation ‘V-states’ assigned to steadily rotating vortex patches (Deem & Zabusky, Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 40, 1978, pp. 859–862) we call the analogous rotating hollow vortices ‘H-states’. Unlike V-states where all but the $N=2$ solution – the Kirchhoff ellipse – must be found numerically, it is shown that all H-state solutions can be written down in closed form. Surface tension is not present on the boundaries of the rotating H-states but the latter are shown to be intimately related to solutions for a non-rotating hollow vortex with surface tension on its boundary (Crowdy, Phys. Fluids, vol. 11, 1999a, pp. 2836–2845). It is also shown how the results here relate to recent work on constant-vorticity water waves (Hur & Wheeler, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 896, 2020, R1) where a connection to classical capillary waves (Crapper, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 2, 1957, pp. 532–540) is made.

The interaction of fluids with surface-mounted obstacles in canopy flows leads to strong turbulence that dominates dispersion and mixing in the neutrally stable atmospheric surface layer. This work focuses on intermittency in the Lagrangian velocity statistics in a canopy flow, which is observed in two distinct forms. The first, small-scale intermittency, is expressed by non-Gaussian and not self-similar statistics of the velocity increments. The analysis shows an agreement in comparison with previous results from homogeneous isotropic turbulence (HIT) using the multifractal model, extended self-similarity and velocity increments’ autocorrelations. These observations suggest that the picture of small-scale Lagrangian intermittency in canopy flows is similar to that in HIT and, therefore, they extend the idea of universal Lagrangian intermittency to certain inhomogeneous and anisotropic flows. Second, it is observed that the root mean square of energy increments along Lagrangian trajectories depends on the direction of the trajectories’ time-averaged turbulent velocity. Subsequent analysis suggests that the flow is attenuated by the canopy drag while leaving the structure function's scaling unchanged. This observation implies the existence of large-scale intermittency in Lagrangian statistics. Thus, this work presents a first empirical evidence of intermittent Lagrangian velocity statistics in a canopy flow that exists in two distinct senses and occurs due to different mechanisms.

A three-layer asymptotic structure for turbulent pipe flow is proposed revealing, in terms of intermediate variables, the existence of a Reynolds-number-invariant logarithmic region for the streamwise mean velocity and variance. The formulation proposes a local velocity scale (which is not the friction velocity) for the intermediate layer and results in two overlap layers. We find that the near-wall overlap layer is governed by a power law for the pipe for all Reynolds numbers, whereas the log law emerges in the second overlap layer (the inertial sublayer) for sufficiently high Reynolds numbers ($Re_{\tau }$). This provides a theoretical basis for explaining the presence of a power law for the mean velocity at low $Re_{\tau }$ and the coexistence of power and log laws at higher $Re_{\tau }$. The classical von Kármán ($\kappa$) and Townsend–Perry ($A_1$) constants are determined from the intermediate-scaled log-law constants; $\kappa$ shows a weak trend at sufficiently high $Re_{\tau }$ but falls within the commonly accepted uncertainty band, whereas $A_1$ exhibits a systematic Reynolds-number dependence until the largest available $Re_{\tau }$. The key insight emerging from the analysis is that the scale separation between two adjacent layers in the pipe is proportional to $\sqrt {Re_{\tau }}$ (rather than $Re_{\tau }$) and therefore the approach to an asymptotically invariant state can be expected to be slow.

The transient cavity dynamics during water entry of a heavy, non-rotating sphere impacting a rotating pool of liquid is studied experimentally, numerically and theoretically. We show that the pool rotation advances the transition of the cavity type – from deep seal to surface seal – marked by a reduction in the transitional Froude number. The role of the dimensionless rotational number $\mathcal {S} \equiv \omega R_0/U_0$ on the transient cavity dynamics is unveiled, where $R_0$ is the sphere radius, $\omega$ the angular speed of the liquid and $U_0$ the impact velocity. The rotating background liquid has two discernible effects on the cavity evolution. Firstly, an increase in the underwater pressure field due to centripetal effects; and secondly, a reduction in the pressure of airflow in the cavity neck near the water surface. The non-dimensional pinch-off time of the deep seal shows a robust $1/2$ power-law dependence on the Froude number, but with a reducing prefactor for increasing $\omega$. Our findings reveal that the effects of a rotating background liquid on the water entry can be traced back to the subtle differences in the initial stage splash and the near-surface cavity dynamics.

Numerical simulations are used to probe Rayleigh–Darcy convection in fluid-saturated porous media towards the ultimate regime. The present three-dimensional dataset, up to Rayleigh–Darcy number $\textit {Ra}=8\times 10^4$, suggests that the appropriate scaling of the Nusselt number is $\textit {Nu}=0.0081\textit {Ra}+0.067\textit {Ra}^{0.61}$, fitting the computed data for $\textit {Ra}\gtrsim 10^3$. Extrapolation of current predictions to the ultimate linear regime yields the asymptotic law $\textit {Nu}=0.0081 \textit {Ra}$, about $16\,\%$ less than indicated in previous studies. Upon examination of the flow structures near the boundaries, we confirm previous indications of small flow cells hierarchically nesting into supercells, and we show evidence that the supercells at the boundary are the footprints of the megaplumes that dominate the interior part of the flow. The present findings pave the way for more accurate modelling of geophysical systems, with special reference to geological $\textrm {CO}_2$ sequestration.

The effect of a small background constant horizontal mean flow on the parametric subharmonic instability (PSI) of locally confined internal wave beams is discussed for the case where the beam frequency is close to twice the inertial frequency due to background rotation. Under this condition, PSI is particularly potent because of the vanishing of the group velocity at the inertial frequency, which prolongs contact of near-inertial subharmonic perturbations with the primary wave. The mean flow generally stabilizes the very short-scale limit of such perturbations. By contrast, the stability of longer-scale perturbations hinges on the strength and the direction of the mean flow; particularly, a negative mean flow (antiparallel to the horizontal projection of the beam group velocity) can extend the sub-inertial range of PSI. However, a large enough mean flow of either sign ultimately weakens PSI.

Regulation of fluid flow by deformations of the surrounding elastic structure is observed in many natural and artificial system, such as in the cardiovascular system. As the first step to study the regulation of oscillating flows, we consider synchronization of vortex shedding past a cylinder within an elastic structure with a sinusoidal external forcing. We use phase-reduction theory to evaluate the synchronization characteristics of the oscillating fluid–structure coupled dynamics. We find that the phase-sensitivity function, which characterizes the phase-response of the oscillation, is significantly affected by the Cauchy number and slightly affected by the fluid-to-structure density ratio and Poisson's ratio of the structure material, for fixed model configuration and Reynolds number. The predicted synchronization characteristics are in close agreement with results from direct numerical simulations. The synchronization region is maximized when the sinusoidal perturbation is applied near the downstream end of the cylinder. These findings open further possibility for the utilization of phase-reduction theory to characterize synchronization in other practical problems exhibiting fluid–structure coupled dynamics, such as in biological systems and the control of microfluidics.

In the presence of inertia-gravity waves, the geostrophic and hydrostatic balance that characterises the slow dynamics of rapidly rotating, strongly stratified flows holds in a time-averaged sense and applies to the Lagrangian-mean velocity and buoyancy. We give an elementary derivation of this wave-averaged balance and illustrate its accuracy in numerical solutions of the three-dimensional Boussinesq equations, using a simple configuration in which vertically planar near-inertial waves interact with a barotropic anticylonic vortex. We further use the conservation of the wave-averaged potential vorticity to predict the change in the barotropic vortex induced by the waves.

In the asymptotic theory of interaction noise from contra-rotating propellers with many blades, previous work in the frequency domain has shown that, for each combination mode/tone, the critical points that dominate the acoustic radiation can be linked to two criteria (sonic and normal-edge) and to a radial event line that spins around the annulus at the same speed as the mode. Thus the speed is different for each combination tone. In real time, however, the interactions precess around the annulus at a single speed, governed by the ‘firing order’ of the interactions, with that speed being (in general) considerably different from that of either the front or rear blade rows. The precession of the interaction is described here in detail and then demonstrated by application to three relevant architectures, including a rotor–stator configuration. The paper then considers how the blade leading-edge design affects the radial variation in the interaction location and analyses the interactions from the viewpoint of a far-field observer. The paper also connects previous time- and frequency-domain results by showing that the sonic and normal-edge criteria can be derived in the time domain using the precession speed. The case of equal blade numbers is also included, for which the precession speed becomes infinite but for which, nonetheless, the sonic and normal-edge criteria still apply.

Laboratory experiments are conducted to investigate the mechanism controlling the formation of stable and unstable acoustic fountains at the free surface of a quiescent body of water. Fountains are induced by focused ultrasonic, a new modality that allows for better spatiotemporal control of water flow. Particle image velocimetry was used to characterize the induced flow field in the vicinity of the ultrasonic focal spot. We used two types of ultrasonic transducers with distinct wave frequencies. We examined three fountain formation regimes by varying the pressure level of the transducers, namely weak, intermediate (stable) and highly forced fountains (explosive). Between different regimes, the fountain height underwent a step-change in response to the increase in acoustic pressure. A force estimation obtained from the flow field shows that the magnitude of axial momentum flux is orders of magnitude lower than that of gravity and surface tension, indicating that the dominant driving force for the fountain generation is the acoustic radiation force (Nightingale et al., Ultrasound Med. Biol., vol. 28, 2002, pp. 227–235). We propose a simple model to estimate the shape of a stable fountain; it accounts for the applied acoustic pressure, gravity, surface tension and axial momentum. The model neglects viscous force, which precludes capturing the intermediate fountain surface curvature. However, the model successfully predicts the geometry of the weak and intermediate fountains.

We report for the first time on triadic resonances in a rotating convection system. Using direct numerical simulations, we find that convective modes in a rotating spherical fluid can excite a pair of inertial modes whose frequencies and wavenumbers match the triadic resonance conditions. Depending on the structures of the convective modes, triadic resonances can lead to the growth of either a pair of modes with lower frequencies and wavenumbers, or a pair of modes with higher frequencies and wavenumbers, providing a possible mechanism for the bi-directional energy cascade. Increased thermal forcing leads to fully developed turbulence, which also exhibits wave-like motions, and is reminiscent of the energy spectrum of inertial wave turbulence. Our results suggest that the interaction of inertial waves plays an important role in rotating convection, which is of great importance in understanding the dynamics of planetary and stellar interiors.

Stability analyses based on the rates of change of perturbations were performed to study the growth mechanisms of second-mode instability in hypersonic boundary layers. The results show that the streamwise velocity perturbation is strengthened by the concurrence of the momentum transfer due to the wall-normal velocity fluctuation and the streamwise gradient of the pressure perturbation near the wall, while the wall-normal velocity perturbation is dominated by the wall-normal gradient of the pressure perturbation. Meanwhile, the change of fluctuating internal energy is sustained by the advection of perturbed thermal energy in the vicinity of the critical layer and by the dilatation fluctuation near the wall. The energy transport by the wall-normal velocity fluctuation accounts for the growth of second-mode instability, and the growth rate depends on the relative phase of the energy transport by the wall-normal velocity fluctuation to the total time rate of change of fluctuating internal energy in the vicinity of the critical layer. Moreover, this relative phase is associated with the mutual interaction between the critical-layer fluctuation and the near-wall fluctuation. Porous walls recast this mutual interaction by delaying the phase of the wall-normal energy transport near the wall, resulting in the stabilization of the second mode.

The celebrated wall-scaling works for many statistical averages in turbulent flows near smooth walls, but the streamwise velocity fluctuation, $u^{\prime }$, is thought to be among the few exceptions. In particular, the near-wall mean-square peak, $\overline {u'u'}^+_p$ – where the superscript $+$ indicates normalization by the friction velocity $u_\tau$, the subscript $p$ indicates the peak value and the overbar indicates time averaging – is known to increase with increasing Reynolds number. The existing explanations suggest a logarithmic growth with respect to $Re$, where $Re$ is the Reynolds number based on $u_\tau$ and the thickness of the wall flow. We show that this boundless growth calls into question the veracity of wall-scaling and so cannot be sustained, and we establish an alternative formula for the peak magnitude that approaches a finite limit $\overline {u'u'}^+_\infty$ owing to the natural constraint of boundedness on the dissipation rate at the wall. This new formula agrees well with the existing data and, in contrast to the logarithmic growth, supports the classical wall-scaling for turbulent intensity at asymptotically high Reynolds numbers.

Equilibrium solutions for hollow vortices in straining flow in a corner are obtained by solving a free-boundary problem. Conformal maps from a canonical doubly connected annular domain to the physical plane combining the Schottky–Klein prime function with an appropriate algebraic map lead to a problem similar to Pocklington's propagating hollow dipole. The result is a two-parameter family of solutions depending on the corner angle and on the non-dimensional ratio of strain to circulation.

Elevated wall temperatures and impinging shock interactions are prevalent features in hypersonic flight. Currently, there is a lack of literature regarding experimental studies examining both features in a flight-representative environment. This work details hot-wall, hypersonic, impinging shock/boundary-layer interaction experiments performed in the T4 Stalker Tube. The model configuration was a two-dimensional heated flat plate and a shock generator. The surface of the graphite flat plate was resistively heated to a mean temperature from $T_w=298\ \textrm {K}$ to $T_w\approx 675\ \textrm {K}$ during an experimental run. An oblique shock, generated by a plate that was inclined at $10^{\circ }$ or $12^{\circ }$ to the free stream, was impinged on the heated flat plate to induce boundary layer separation. The primary flow condition produced Mach 7 flight-equivalent nozzle-supply enthalpy with a unit Reynolds number of $4.93\times 10^6\ \textrm {m}^{-1}$. More flow conditions with lower unit Reynolds numbers and flow enthalpies were considered to examine flow separation characteristics. Schlieren and infrared thermography captured the flow field and the wall temperature distribution, respectively. The results showed that the size of the flow separation grew with a higher $T_w$ and a lower unit Reynolds number. Moreover, the scaled separation of the present data showed a high discrepancy with existing separation correlations developed from a supersonic impinging shock and a hypersonic compression ramp, mainly due to the higher shock strength. Instead, the present data followed a scaling law that includes the pressure ratio across the impinging shock with a slight dependence on the wall temperature ratio.
