Wherever the opium poppy is cultivated its seed forms a valuable secondary crop. India has a bigger outturn of seed than any other country. In the years immediately preceding the war the bulk of the poppy seed produced in India was exported. The following Table gives an idea of the proportion of the total production exported for a number of years past.

Fifteen cultivars of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) were grown in the field at Hiroshima University, Japan, to investigate seasonal changes in leaf water relations and cell membrane stability (CMS) measured by the polyethylene glycol (PEG) test. Leaf water potential and osmotic potential were measured from August 1988 to August 1989. Solute concentration in leaf cell sap was also estimated.

Cell membrane stability increased, leaf water potential and osmotic potential decreased and turgor potential increased with decreasing environmental temperatures during autumn and winter. The significant increases observed in CMS may enable plants to tolerate freezing temperatures during winter. Decrease in leaf water potential may be a result of water-deficit effects due to soil freezing at low temperatures and the decrease in osmotic potential may help plants to maintain turgor and tolerate freezing conditions. Plants maintained higher turgor as the osmotic potential decreased to values as low as – 3·98 MPa during winter; the maintenance of turgor helps to maintain water uptake under water deficit conditions at low temperatures.

Sugar and K were the major osmotic contributors in orchardgrass leaves. Sugar and Ca concentrations increased and Mg and P concentrations decreased at cold temperatures. K concentration increased in six cultivars and decreased in nine others at cold temperatures. Sugar concentration in cell sap was negatively correlated with osmotic potential. It was concluded that seasonal changes in CMS may be mainly associated with the osmotic potential of the leaf tissues.

Damage to barley grain cv. Golden Promise was induced in the laboratory by putting seed at 8·7, 14, 18, 22, 26 and 35% moisture content (MC) through a mechanical laboratory thresher for 10, 20 or 45 sec. The extent of visible external damage was greatest at 8·7 and 14% MC with reduced and similar levels of damage after handling at 18–35% MC. At moisture contents up to and including 26%, seeds could tolerate extensive mechanical damage with little effect on seed quality. Seed germination and seedling vigour were, however, reduced after handling at 35% MC despite similar levels of external damage to those seeds handled at 18, 22 and 26% MC. Samples of grain of cv. Triumph produced by whole-crop harvesting included mainly slightly damaged seeds with little effect of harvest moisture content, which ranged from 22·5 to 44%, on the incidence of damage. Seed germination and seedling vigour increased when seeds were harvested at progressively lower moisture contents, with the largest increase between 36% MC (56% germination, 6·1 vigour rating) and 29·5% MC (94% germination, 7·8 vigour rating). The seed quality of whole-crop harvested seed at 29% MC was similar to that of combined seed harvested at the same moisture content. It is suggested that 30 % is the maximum harvest moisture content at which commercially acceptable seed may be produced by the whole-crop harvesting method.

When maize forms a large part of the diet of any group of people, pellagra can be prevented by increasing the amount of nicotinic acid or by increasing the amount of tryptophane in the diet. The possibility of increasing the nicotinic acid content of maize by genetical means presents a promising field.

Repeated attempts have been made, both during the recent war and the war of 1914–18, to make the store of starch and other nutrients in the horse-chestnut available for farm animals. Unfortunately, the extremely bitter taste of the horse-chestnut, due to the presence of saponins and, to a smaller extent, of tannins, has proved a severe obstacle, and horse-chestnuts have been found to be an unsuitable food for livestock both on account of their unpalatable character and their constipating action.

In a study of two coarse-wool breeds (Awassi and Hamdani) the birthcoat and adult fleece were sampled from six body positions. Mean fibre diameter, mean fibre length, mean staple length and the percentages of fibre types were studied in relation to the birthcoat fibre type arrays.

The birthcoat of the two coarse wool breeds showed only plateau and saddle fibre type arrays. In Awassi lambs, plateau arrays were all P3 type whereas in Hamdani 28·6% of the plateau arrays were Po and the rest were P3 indicating a stronger base in the latter. S/P ratios, calculated from fibre types, were 2·22 and 2·27, at birth, and 3·56 and 2·93 at 4–8 weeks of age, in Awassi and Hamdani respectively. Awassi birthcoats showed more precipice within the CT group than those of Hamdani and plateau arrays were more endowed with the precipice than were saddle arrays.

A composite sample from the back and mid-side, in Awassi, and from the back and britch, in Hamdani, was found to be most representative of the birthcoat fibre types.

In the adult fleece of the Awassi breed, the mean fibre length following plateau arrays exceeded those following saddle arrays.

In Hamdani, the saddle arrays developed into coarser fibres in average diameter than those of plateau arrays whereas in Awassi no difference occurred. Awassi plateau arrays were followed by higher within-staple variability in distribution of fibre length than were saddle arrays, whereas in the distribution of fibre diameter there was no difference. In Hamdani, however, saddle arrays were followed by slightly higher within-stable variability in both length and diameter than were plateau arrays.

Birthcoat samples that had a transition in the CT group or had saddle array developed into adult fleeces with greater frequency of normal distribution in both fibre length and diameter, within staple. Adult fleeces that showed frequent bimodal distribution of both diameter and length, within staple, were those with birthcoats that had a precipice in length, or in coarseness and length, within their CT group or those with birthcoats that had plateau arrays.

The current study was to determine the effects of growth hormone-releasing peptide ([His1, Lys6]-GHRP) on growth performance and carcass traits in pigs, and to determine whether the results were comparable to those of recombinant porcine growth hormone (r-PGH) treatment. Thirty Landrace and Yorkshire pigs (40–45 kg) were randomly divided into three groups, each group consisted of two boars, five gilts and three barrows. Peptides were administered daily by intramuscular injection with the following schemes and dosages: Group A ([His1, Lys6]-GHRP, 200 μg/day in 0·5 ml saline), Group B (r-PGH, 3 mg/day in 0·6 ml saline), and Group C (sterilized physiological saline, 0·5 ml/day). [His1, Lys6]-GHRP caused significant improvements both in pig growth and carcass traits. The average daily gain (ADG) and feed efficiency of the [His1, Lys6]-GHRP treated group were higher than those of the control, but less than with the r-PGH treatment. The net increase in the ADG by [His1, Lys6]-GHRP was c. 14%, and was 23% by r-PGH (both P<0·01). The feed efficiency was improved 17% by [His1, Lys6]-GHRP (P<0·01) and 20% by r-PGH (P<0·01). On the other hand, the back-fat thickness in both [His1, Lys6]-GHRP and r-PGH treated groups (1·76±0·041 cm and 1·72±0·040 cm, respectively) was considerably less (P<0·05) than that of the control group (1·81±0·040 cm). In addition, the lean cuts percentage and the rib longissimus muscle area were comparable in the [His1, Lys6]-GHRP and r-PGH treatments (lean cuts percentage: 57±2·0% and 57±1·5%, respectively; rib longissimus muscle area: 32·8±0·91 cm2 and 32·9±1·10 cm2, respectively), and both were significantly (P<0·05) greater than those of the control group (lean cuts percentage: 53±1·5%; rib longissimus muscle area: 28·3±1·61 cm2). In conclusion, [His1, Lys6]-GHRP appeared to be a promising tool for controlling carcass fat in pigs.

The aim of the current study was to estimate additive and dominance genetic variance components for days from calving to first service (DFS), a number of services to conception (NSC) and days open (DO). Data consisted of 25 518 fertility records from first parity dairy cows collected from 15 large Holstein herds of Iran. To estimate the variance components, two models, one including only additive genetic effects and another fitting both additive and dominance genetic effects together, were used. The additive and dominance relationship matrices were constructed using pedigree data. The estimated heritability for DFS, NSC and DO were 0.068, 0.035 and 0.067, respectively. The differences between estimated heritability using the additive genetic and additive-dominance genetic models were negligible regardless of the trait under study. The estimated dominance variance was larger than the estimated additive genetic variance. The ratio of dominance variance to phenotypic variance was 0.260, 0.231 and 0.196 for DFS, NSC and DO, respectively. Akaike's information criteria indicated that the model fitting both additive and dominance genetic effects is the best model for analysing DFS, NSC and DO. Spearman's rank correlations between the predicted breeding values (BV) from additive and additive-dominance models were high (0.99). Therefore, ranking of the animals based on predicted BVs was the same in both models. The results of the current study confirmed the importance of taking dominance variance into account in the genetic evaluation of dairy cows.

Flow rates of metabolites in an open-compartment model can be calculated from specific activity measurements taken at equilibrium during continuous infusion of an isotope. The within-animal variance gives an estimate of the precision of the flow rate.

The Jack-knife method of calculating within-animal variances is described. It was evaluated using simulated data, and shown to be superior to a simpler method, the Single Section method.

The increase in experimental accuracy caused by increasing the number of specific activity samples per animal depends on the ratio of between- to within-animal variance components (B/W). For three experiments with sheep, 23 of the 30 values B/W for the different flow rates ranged from 0·25 to 1·5. For this range between six and 12 samples per animal are needed.

Plectranthus edulis is an ancient tuber crop, cultivated in Ethiopia, which produces stem tubers on stolons below the ground; however, agronomic and physiological information on this crop is scarce. Three field experiments were carried out at each of two locations (Awassa and Wondogenet, Ethiopia). Expt 1 dealt with the effects of breaking a seed tuber into different numbers of seed pieces before planting, Expt 2 assessed the effect of the weight of the seed tuber piece and Expt 3 investigated the effect of planting different numbers of seed pieces per planting hole. Cultivar Lofuwa was planted in Awassa, whereas cvar Chankua was planted in Wondogenet. Breaking seed tubers in Expt 1 resulted in more main stems/hill, more tubers and smaller individual tubers. In Wondogenet, the tuber yield also increased. Breaking did not affect the number of stolons/m2. Expt 2 indicated that when only one seed piece was planted per planting hole, smaller seed pieces gave fewer stems, fewer stolons and fewer tubers/m2, smaller tubers and lower tuber yields. Expt 3 showed that planting more seed pieces/planting hole gave more stems, more stolons and more tubers/m2, thus increasing tuber fresh yield/m2, whereas the mean tuber weight was not consistently affected. Across all experiments, the tuber yield increased when the number of main stems increased up to three main stems/m2. Higher tuber yields resulting from experimental treatments were either achieved by an effect on number of tubers alone or by combined effects on number of tubers and mean tuber weight, but not by an effect on mean tuber weight alone. The number of small tubers was high in all experiments. Breaking a seed tuber into two or three pieces before planting them in one planting hole consistently resulted in increased numbers of main stems and tuber yield.

1. Four experiments in 1958 and five in 1959 compared responses to potassium (as combinedrilled muriate of potash) in the absence of nitrogen and in the presence of single and double doses of nitrogen (as broadcast sulphate of ammonia) on soils selected because they contained very little acid-soluble potassium.

2. Responses to 0·5 cwt. K2O/acre were obtained at six centres (two significant), but the effects of a further 0·5 cwt. K2O/acre were more variable and gains and losses (each at four centres) were almost equally balanced.

3. Gains from nitrogen were associated with previous cropping. N1 raised yields at seven centres (six significantly), but N2 raised yields further at only five centres (three significantly) and depressed yields significantly at three centres where barley followed a root crop or ley.

4. Potash did little to improve the strength of straw and therefore standing capacity in a wet season (1958) and had little effect upon the size of the grain, whereas nitrogen increased lodging and reduced the average size of the grain.

5. Increases in potassium uptake were associated with yield increases, whereas increases in nitrogen uptake were associated with both higher nitrogen percentage in grain and higher yields.

The rate of development of resistance to Du-Ter in Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) has been determined. The results show that true resistance to Du-Ter could not be induced throughout 33 successive generations. Also, it was found that the rate of development of resistance to DDT in the DDT + Du-Ter strain after being selected with DDT + Du-Ter pressure for 17 successive generations was 11·5- and 43-fold that in the DDT strain. It is concluded that the application of DDT and Du-Ter mixture, having dissimilar modes of action, considerably controls the development of resistance to DDT.

Damping off is the most common disease caused by edaphic fungi in Spanish crops, among which Rhizoctonia solani AG-4 stands out. In the present work, two possible methods of control were evaluated, incorporation of different doses of organic matter (OM; obtained from strawberry crops) and Pseudomonas fluorescens as a plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). The highest inhibition (43% less) against the pathogen was found in the assays that used 20 g of biofumigant/kg soil. Inoculation of the P. fluorescens strain (PGPR) did not protect against the pathogen. In addition, the microbial evolution during incubation with OM was studied. For this purpose, the bacterial and fungal catabolic profiles were determined (using Biolog Eco and FF plates, respectively) as well as bacterial counts of total aerobes, Pseudomonas sp. and aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC)-degrading populations, during OM incorporation. This agro-technique produced changes in microbial catabolic community profiles, increasing bacterial metabolic activity and minimizing metabolic diversity of micro-organisms under control with and without pathogen. As for microbial counts, aerobic and ACC-degrading populations decreased while Pseudomonas sp. population increased with OM treatments.

The OM amendment applied to control the damping off caused by R. solani is viable; it is more environmentally friendly and has a lower economic cost than chemical controls and, therefore, it could serve as a component in integrated-management programmes.

Six nitrosoguanidine-induced manganese-resistant mutants of Azospirillum brasilense were isolated and used for associative N2 fixation studies with cheena (Panicum miliaceum L.) in acid soil. Three mutants showed cross-resistance to aluminium and neomycin, but of these three only one showed cross-resistance to streptomycin. Inoculation of cheena with A. brasilense and its mutants at different rates of applied nitrogen led to a significant increase in associative N2 fixation, N content, dry-matter production and grain yield in acid soil. A saving of about 20 kg N/ha could be achieved by inoculating seeds of cheena with these mutant strains in acid soil.

The ability to detect and measure water stress accurately is critical for optimizing crop production. The Crop Water Stress Index (CWSI), the linear relationship of the difference between foliage and air temperatures as a function of the air vapour pressure deficit, is one widely used method. Under well-watered conditions, a ‘baseline’ is derived that is crop specific and presumed fairly constant, despite differences in development and physiology. This study reports changes in the baseline of the CWSI for lucerne crops not subjected to water shortage over 3 years. Studies of lucerne in California from April 1986 to October 1988 used the CWSI to plan irrigations. It was necessary to re-establish the baseline periodically throughout the experiment. In the first year it was similar to that reported in the literature, but in the second year it had a statistically significant steeper slope and higher intercept. In the third year, the regression equation was similar to that in the first year. The changes in the baseline are thought to be a result of crop age rather than year-to-year weather fluctuations. The baseline needs to be determined periodically as the crop matures, to ensure accurate interpretation of plant water stress.

The probable error on one pig calculated on the average daily live weight increase was found to be for cross-bred pigs about 7 per cent.; for pure-bred pigs from the same litter and each of similar live weight about 3 per cent.; for cross-bred pigs each of similar live weight but from different parents about 4 per cent.

The error is greatest in experiments of short duration and it decreases as the period of the experiment is lengthened. The decrease is slight if the experiment is prolonged beyond seven weeks.

The errors on 18 separate pens containing four pigs to each pen (the total initial live weight of each pen being similar) varied from 2·3 per cent, to 12·08 per cent., the average being 6·21 per cent.

The percentage probable error is relatively low when the pigs are fattening rapidly and high when the pigs are fattening slowly. The average daily increase of the quicker fattening female pigs when un-speyed appears to be depressed as a result of periodic sexual disturbances.

The stage of fattening does not appear to influence the probable error. Animals in the later stages of fattening show a greater range in their rate of fattening than animals in the early stages, see Fig. 2, p. 284.

Weekly weighing of individual pigs is recommended as it gives an indication of the health of each pig. It also enables each experimenter to discriminate between differences in the rate of fattening due to individuality and differences due to ill health, etc.

The rate of fattening of pigs is very variable, periods of rapid fattening are followed by periods of depression.

Response of rainfed barley to different methods of nitrogen application was studied on a loamy sand soil in 1974–5 and 1975–6. The nitrogen fertilizer was applied by broadcasting, side drilling, drilling below the seed and in solution. In a year of lower rainfall, applying the fertilizer below the seed or in solution produced significantly more grain yield than broadcasting or side drilling. In a year of higher and well-distributed rainfall, applying the fertilizer below the seed was significantly better than other methods of nitrogen application. The magnitude of the response to applied nitrogen increased with increase of crop season rainfall and its better distribution. Placing N below the seed improved water use. It was followed in order by applying in solution, side drilling and broadcasting in both the years.
