1. It is shown that the strength of the discharge from an overhead wire network at a high potential is a variable quantity depending on the mobility of the carriers of the electricity and on the velocity of the wind. Attention has been drawn to the presence of radio-active disintegration products which may possibly be a complicating factor in the effect of the discharge upon plant growth.

2. The maximum current density of the discharge in some experimental stations, where the apparatus is constructed after the pattern of the Agricultural Electric Discharge Co., is of the order 10–11amp./cm.2

3. Measurements of potential gradient and of current density agree in showing that the effect of the discharge is not limited to the area under the wires. This is of importance as control and electrified areas have usually been placed close together in field experiments. Some account is given of the distribution of the discharge under various weather conditions.

4. Methods are discussed by which the control area may perhaps be kept under more normal electrical conditions in spite of the proximity of the overhead discharge wires. The results of some of the tentative efforts in this direction which were made at Dumfries during 1913 are briefly discussed.

Growth, yield and incidence of lodging of poppies were studied in Tasmania at 10–200 plants/m2 and at nominal rectangularities (within-row: between-row spacing) ranging from 1:1 to 10:1. In 1983/84 and 1988/89, there were asymptotic relationships between plant population density and both total dry-matter production and total head (capsule plus seed) yield at maturity. In 1983/84, a season with above-average wind, the incidence of lodging increased as density increased to > 50 plants/m2; morphine concentration decreased as density increased to > 100 plants/m2. This resulted in parabolic relationships between yield of erect (machine-harvestable) heads and yield of morphine from erect heads with plant density, the maximum morphine yield from erect heads being achieved at 70 plants/m2. In 1988/89, a season with below-average wind, the effects of lodging were less severe at high densities and the components of ‘erect’ yield were adequately fitted by an asymptotic function. Rectangularity of 1:1 gave higher total dry matter production, total head yield, yield of erect heads and morphine yield from erect heads than 4:1 and 10:1. Since calm conditions similar to those of 1988/89 occur only once in every 4 years, growers should be encouraged to establish c. 70 plants/m2. As most commercial crops in Tasmania are drilled in 150–175 mm rows, growing at 70 plants/m2 to maximize the effect of plant density would also approximate to the ideal rectangularity (2:1 in this case).

Brody, Gompertz, Logistic, Richards and von Bertalanffy functions were compared as descriptors of growth in 319 coypus (Myocastor coypus) of Greenland and Silver varieties, from birth to 10–19 months of age. Several criteria were considered for the selection of the model: (a) bias in the asymptotic weight; (b) bias in birth weight; (c) error sum of squares; (d) error mean squares weighted by the number of animals converging in all functions; (e) determination coefficient. To adjust the curves NLIN procedure from SAS and iterative method of Marquardt were applied. A mixed model was used to analyse the parameters of the selected growth curve (asymptotic weight, A; constant of integration, B; and maturation rate, k) which included effects of farm, variety, sex, sire within farm and variety, reproductive status within sex, birth season and first order interactions. The effect of sire was considered as random. The von Bertalanffy function was selected and mean values for the parameters of this function were 8016 g and 0·008 g/g per day, for A and k respectively. There were differences in the estimated parameters between sexes; males had larger values of A and k than females.

Weights at fixed ages (birth, weaning, 6–7 months) were analysed, as well as the final recorded weight and average postweaning gain. The model of analysis was similar to the previous one. There were no differences between varieties. Significant differences between sexes for almost all studied traits were detected. With age, weight difference between males and females increased. At 6 months of age, males were 37% heavier than females. Male average daily gain was higher than that of females, sexual dimorphism being evident in all analysed traits.

Three spring barley varieties, Proctor, Vada and Mosanne, were inoculated with Rhynchosporium secalis(Oudem.) J. J. Davies at Growth Stages 3, 7, 10·1 and 10·5 (Large, 1954). The treatments included single inoculation at each growth stage and multiple inoculations at two, three and four of the above growth stages. There was no effect of inoculation oil the number of fertile tillers. Thousand-grain weight was reduced in all seven inoculation treatments in Mosanne but only the quadruple inoculation adversely affected the other two varieties. Numbers of grains of both Mosanne and Vada were reduced by treatments which included an inoculation at ear emergence but Proctor was affected only by the quadruple inoculation. In terms of disease assessment Mosanne was very susceptible and Proctor moderately resistant but Vada, with symptom scores only slightly better than Mosanne, exhibited a degree of tolerance which was reflected by the grain weight results in which small increases were recorded. This tolerance mechanism, possibly acting through compensation in this variety, is compared with compensation reported in wheat.

A comparison of ammonium sulphate (AS) with and without N-Serve and sulphurcoated urea (SCU) as N sources for sugarcane, studied in a pot experiment, showed that although the tillering, the leaf N concentration and cane yield were increased by adding fertilizer N there were no significant differences between N sources. However, AS and AS + N-Serve depressed the soil pH, especially that of acidic soils, much more than SCU. In a field experiment where AS, urea and SCU were compared on a calcareous soil, it was observed that urea gave significantly lower cane and sucrose yields than AS and SCU when N was applied on the surface, possibly due to greater volatiliization losses from urea. Subsurface application increased the efficiency of urea, although the method of placement had no significant effect on the N efficiency of AS and SCU. AS was as effective as SCU. Thus the coating of urea by sulphur increased its efficiency for sugarcane only when applied on the surface of a calcareous soil.

Controlled release (CR) formulations can significantly influence the fate of carbofuran in the environment. The influence of three alginate-encapsulated CR formulations compared with the granular formulation (G10%) on the mobility of carbofuran in sandy clay loam soil and sandy loam soil was investigated. In flooded soil the leaching potential of the three alginate controlled release formulations tested was decreased more than nine times (not more than 3%) compared with the G10% (28%). Most of the released carbofuran was confined to the top 0–5 cm of the soil column followed by the second 5–10 cm layer and the least was found in the fourth section (15–20 cm). The data obtained for a sandy loam soil irrigated by drip irrigation showed that the greatest proportion of carbofuran leached through the columns was from the G10% (52%) compared with 3–4% from CR formulations over a 30-day period. The carbofuran concentrations found in different soil depths showed similar trends to those for the flooded soil. Based on the residue levels recorded within the 20 cm depth, the relative retention ratio of carbofuran in sandy clay loam versus sandy loam soil was 1·2[ratio ]1 for the controlled release formulations and 1·9[ratio ]1 for the G10%.

In his observations on six-day disease, Taylor (1944) reported that the chicks which died on his preliminary experiments gave negative results on bacteriological examination.

Many workers hold that for routine examination of poultry, a quick, convenient and inexpensive method of detecting certain specific bacterial infection is to inoculate slopes of nutrient agar with liver or other tissue, and incubate at 37° C. It is claimed that some organisms often grow in pure culture from diseased chicks, and that this method is especially suitable in the detection of S. pullorum or S. gallinarum infections. The resultant growth can be washed off in saline solution and tested by specific agglutinating sera or by testing on certain carbohydrates.

The susceptibility to drought stress during flowering and grain filling of dwarf hybrids of pearl millet carrying the dwarfing gene d2 was investigated in 1987 at Patancheru, India, under field conditions during the dry season and, in the rainy season, under a rain shelter, using four pairs of near-isogenic tall and dwarf hybrids. Drought stress during grain filling reduced the number of grains per unit area and individual grain mass. Grain yields of the dwarf hybrids were lower than those of the corresponding tall hybrids in the unstressed control and under drought stress and were associated with a lower individual grain mass in the dwarf lines. In the dwarf hybrids, harvest index was similar to or better than that of the tall versions but a reduced biomass resulted in lower grain yields. Dwarf hybrids were not more adversely affected by water stress, however, than their tall counterparts, indicating that susceptibility to drought stress would not be likely to limit acceptance of new dwarf varieties.

The effect of a range of one-year set-aside treatments on soil mineral nitrogen (SMN), during the set-aside period and in a following wheat crop were studied in a phased experiment at five sites from 1987 to 1991. Ground cover options permitted under the UK government's ‘set-aside’ scheme, including natural regeneration, autumn sown Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum), spring-sown legumes and cultivated fallow, were compared with a control treatment of continuous cereals managed with fertilizer inputs. In the first of three phases in this experiment, an uncultivated fallow (kept weed-free) and autumn-sown forage rape (Brassica napus) were included as extra treatments. There were large differences in total SMN (0·0–0·9 m) between sites, ranging from 16 to 205 kg N/ha, reflecting differences in soil type, which ranged from clays to sands, and previous cropping husbandry. Differences in SMN between set-aside treatments during the first winter of the set-aside year were small, but increased during the following summer. Amounts of SMN were greatest after cultivated fallow (46–178 kg N/ha) and least after ryegrass (26–111 kg N/ha). Natural regeneration and spring sown legumes were more variable in their effect on SMN. Compared to continuous cereals, there was a build up in SMN during bare fallow, but a reduction under ryegrass, prior to returning to wheat cropping in the autumn after set-aside. SMN results suggest there was an increased nitrate leaching risk for bare fallow and natural regeneration set-aside, compared to sown ryegrass covers, in the winter following ploughing out of set-aside. This risk could be minimized by earlier sowing of winter cereals following set-aside or sowing with winter oilseed rape rather than cereals to maximize crop nitrogen (N) uptake, during the autumn growth period.

Averaged across five sites, residual SMN supply in the spring of first test year cereal crops for all set-aside treatments was similar to that for continuous cereals, suggesting over-winter losses by N leaching or immobilization. The low residual N fertility after rotational set-aside suggested that following crop N recommendations should be the same as for continuous cereals. Amounts of SMN were less each year in spring than in the preceding autumn in both the set-aside and first test cereal crops. The results suggested that a ryegrass cover appeared to be the most environmentally favourable option for rotational set-aside management, as it minimized the amount of readily leachable N both during and immediately after the set-aside period.

Two inbred diploid lines of Secale cereale L. and their derived tetraploids were grown together with a commercial diploid and tetraploid in all possible pair combinations in a pot experiment. Comparisons between lines and varieties were made in respect to dry weight measured at 30 weeks.

The competitive effects within mixtures were not compensatory, the commercial varieties tending to increase in dry weight more than the homozygous inbred lines decreased. This gave rise to mixture means which tended to exceed their mid-constituent values.

The analysis of reciprocal differences in dry weight showed that the effects of competition between any one genotype and its associate in mixtures were constant (alpha competition), the sign and magnitude of the alpha effect being related to the pure stand values of the genotype.

The mean effect of competition was to increase the difference in dry weight between genotypes by 2·108 g for each gram by which the genotypes differed when grown alone. In each case the values for genotypes with the higher dry weight increased in mixture whereas the values for those with lower dry weights decreased.

Not surprisingly, the commercial varieties were found to be better competitors than the inbred lines, but of more interest was the ineffectiveness of chromosome doubling on competitive ability. Under the conditions of density and fertility reported here, the tetraploid inbred lines could not be distinguished from their diploid progenitors either in their competitive ability or in their reaction to increased density when grown in mixtures. The same is true for the tetraploid and diploid commercial varieties.

A non-destructive indicator of seed water content could significantly help crop scientists with assessment of the effects of environmental conditions during drying on grain qualities or on seed physiological quality. This is particularly important for grain legumes which simultaneously bear pods of different ages. Visual assessment of pod colour has so far been used to date grain legume stages, but now colour can be easily and accurately measured with a portable spectrophotometer. Relationships between the spectrophotometer measurements and the pod and seed water contents were tested in various climatic contexts (3 years: 2000, 2001, 2002; field or greenhouse, two or three sowing dates) for two bean cultivars (Booster and Calypso) and also for one pea cultivar (Baccara) in 2003 near Angers, France. Among the different spectrophotometer measurements, hue angle (h) clearly shows the transition from green (h=180 °) to yellow (h=90 °) and then to red (h=0 °). In each context, h and seed water content (SWC) relationships showed the same pattern of three linear phases: first a steady state; then a sharp decrease from green (h=106–108 °) to yellow (h=85–93 °) just before the end of the seed filling stage for Booster or between the end of the seed filling phase and the beginning of seed drying for Calypso and pea; finally, a slow decrease from yellow to ochre (h=75–78 °) during seed drying. For each bean cultivar, the parameters of the linear relationships showed no differences between maturation conditions. Therefore, 6 h classes matching six SWC classes could be defined over a wide range of SWC between 0·56 and 0·2 g/g for Booster. However for Calypso and pea, only 3 h classes could be defined because of the tight relationships between h and SWC during the end of seed drying, which can be explained by pod walls drying faster than seeds. Hence, spectrophotometer measurements, if calibrated for a given cultivar of a species, could now be used to select pods with seeds of the same water content and therefore to study environmental effects on quality criteria either in controlled conditions or in the field.

Heat-exchange chambers, one for heating and one for cooling, were surgically embedded beneath the skin of a sheep. The intensity of heating and cooling was progressively increased, producing average subdermal temperatures up to 50·3 °C over one chamber and down to 21·0 °C over the other. The normal subdermal temperature was 37·7 °C.

Moderate heating produced a small increase in the length growth rate of wool over the hot chamber. Higher temperatures caused a marked reduction and with still further heating there was almost complete cessation of wool growth.

In contrast to heating, cooling always caused a suppression of wool growth which became more pronounced as the degree of cooling was intensified. The length growth rate decreased to half of normal at one stage but it never ceased.

There was evidence of a slight but progressive decrease in fibre diameter with increasing subdermal temperatures up to 45 °C but at a temperature of 48 °C many of the fibres exhibited a marked thickening. Cooling the skin had little effect on fibre diameter. Pigmentation of the fibres was unchanged throughout the whole range of temperatures used and there was no evidence of change in crimping of the fibres.

Heating in the range 45–50 °C produced an increase in epidermal thickness. Sweat and sebaceous glands, and erector muscles appeared unchanged after heating or cooling but innervation of the skin appeared to be reduced by extreme heating.

The skin and wool growth over a dummy chamber were normal and similar in all respects to that in other control areas.

Three methods of controlling swede mildew were compared. Mildew infection was reduced by delayed sowing but yields from later sown plots were seriously reduced. Infection was reduced but not eliminated on resistant varieties. Highly effective chemical control was achieved with the fungicide Persulon, which showed both eradicant and protective properties. The yield differences between a genetically resistant and a susceptible variety were eliminated when Persulon was used.

As a prerequisite for developing crop-yield/water-use functions for sugarbeet using the results of historical irrigation experiments, it was necessary to develop a water-use model which could operate with a limited data set. The general form of this model has been reported by Wright et al. (1994). In this paper the development and validation of the model for the sugarbeet crop is described.

The canopy was modelled in terms of the leaf area index and the relative interception of incoming solar radiation using functions based on thermal time and time. Four phases of growth were identified: emergence, slow-growth, fast-growth and full-canopy. An empirical drought factor was included to allow for the effects of water stress on canopy development during the slow- and fastgrowth expansion phases. Root development was described using a three phase model: initial (temperature dependent), linear and maximum depth (both time dependent).

Independent data previously reported from Broom's Barn Experimental Station were then used to validate the model in terms of its capacity to predict crop canopy development, with and without drought stress, soil water extraction at different depths and soil water deficits during the season. The study confirmed the validity of the model for predicting the water-use of sugarbeet.

The composition and weight of young cotton leaves at a fixed age are given for 3 years which had different rainfall before the sowing of the cotton, and for which the final yields of the cotton are also known. These yields are inversely related to the early growth and percentage composition of the crop. It is not possible to explain this, but the differences in early growth and nutrient absorption are in accord with expectation. In a year of heavy rainfall before sowing, surface soil nitrates are low, which accords with the smaller amounts of nitrogen taken up by the plants. Furthermore, there is evidence to suggest that in such a year the physical condition of the soil would be poor, which is consistent with poor growth and the low uptake of nutrients other than nitrogen.

In the Sudan Gezira the yields of irrigated cotton are positively correlated with the amount of rainfall in the 6 weeks before sowing. This is not due to increased nitrate in the top foot of soil nor is it due to increased efficiency of absorption of nutrients in years of high rainfall.

Abiotic stresses such as cold and drought are major limiting factors of durum wheat production in the highlands of Iran. A total of 641 tetraploid wheat (Triticum turgidum L.) accessions, selected from wheat collections conserved at ICARDA gene-bank, were evaluated under rainfed conditions at three highland research stations in cold and moderately cold areas of Iran. The main objectives were to (i) compare the different tetraploid wheats for cold tolerance and agronomic performance in relation to their growth habit (spring, facultative and winter) and (ii) examine the potential of accessions to combine cold and drought tolerance with high yield and good agronomic traits, for their further use in durum wheat breeding. Plant height, thousand-kernel weight and grain yield were the traits that best differentiated the accessions. The winter types had better agronomic performance, higher chlorophyll content (SPAD) and cold tolerance, compared to facultative and spring types. Most of the cold-tolerant accessions belonged to T. turgidum subsp. durum and T. turgidum subsp. carthalicum. Some of the accessions combined high yield with the level of cold and drought tolerance that is needed for the development of cultivars adapted to the highlands of Iran. The results indicated that related species could be used to improve winter hardness and cold tolerance in durum wheat and selection for earliness, high chlorophyll content and grain yield may lead to better cold tolerance and adaptation to the highland areas of Iran.

An experiment was carried out from August to early November 1994 to examine differences in diet selection, herbage intake, grazing behaviour and animal performance between weaned lambs rotationally grazing swards of annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum)/white clover (Trifolium repens) and Yorkshire fog (Holcus lanatus)/T. repens with or without Lotus corniculatus. There were four replicate groups of six lambs per treatment. The effects of condensed tannins (CT) on lamb production were assessed by twice-daily oral administration of 10g polyethylene glycol (PEG; molecular weight 4000) to half the lambs on each sward. The Lotus content of all swards was very low, and results are presented here for main sward comparisons meaned over lotus treatments. Overall mean estimates of pre-grazing herbage mass and sward surface height for the annual ryegrass and Yorkshire fog swards respectively, were 5820 v. 4360±190 kgDM/ha (P<0·001) and 29 v. 21±0·6cm (P<0·001). The coefficient of organic matter digestibility (OMD) of the diet selected and herbage intake were higher on Yorkshire fog than on annual ryegrass (0·78 v. 0·74 ± 0·080g/kg; P<0·05, and 1070 v. 860±57g OM per lamb per day, P<0·05 respectively), reflecting the higher content in the diet of grass green leaf (980 v. 930g/kg±14g/kg, P<0·05) and the lower content of dead material (80 v. 110±15g/kg, P<0·08). Lambs grazing on Yorkshire fog swards had higher clean wool growth rate (1470 v. 1280±30mg/cm per day, P<0·01) and greater fibre diameter (31 v. 29±0·2μ, P<0·001), greater liveweight gain (152 v. 108±5·5g/day, P<0·001), final weight (42 v. 38±0·5kg, P<0·001), carcass weight gain (89 v. 69±2·5g/day, P<0·001), carcass weight (19 v. 17±0·3kg, P<0·001) and soft tissue thickness (GR value 11 v. 8±0·5mm, P<0·01), and lower faecal egg counts (FEC; square root transferred values 9·2 v. 11·0±0·4 eggs/g fresh faeces, P<0·01) than lambs grazing annual ryegrass swards. Similar dietary concentrations of condensed tannins (CT) between Yorkshire fog and annual ryegrass swards (4·2 v. 3·7 DM±0·2g/kg, P<0·08) increased clean wool growth (1440 v. 1310±32 mg/cm per day, P<0·05), fibre diameter (30·7 v. 29·5±0·21μ, P<0·01) and liveweight gain (141 v. 120±4·3g per lamb per day, P<0·01), although differences in carcass weight (17·9 v. 18·2±0·3kg) and FEC transformed values (9·6 v. 11·0±0·6 eggs/g fresh faeces) were not significant. The effects of CT on animal performance were greater in Yorkshire fog swards. CT had no significant effects on diet selection, herbage intake and grazing behaviour patterns.

The variations in Hutchinson-MacLennan “lime requirement” with the amount of soil and calcium bicarbonate solution are shown to be connected with the buffer action of the soil. Indirect titration curves can be derived from the calcium bicarbonate results, and show a systematic divergence from the direct electrometric titration curves, owing to the variable calcium concentration of the final bicarbonate solutions. In the presence of calcium chloride both methods show lower pH values for a given base absorption and yield almost identical titration curves. The Hutchinson-MacLennan “lime requirement” is always less than the equivalent of the amount of calcium hydroxide necessary to give a neutral suspension in the electrometric titrations. The calcium bicarbonate solutions at equilibrium are always more acid than pH 6·2, but the “salt effect” tends to give results corresponding to a somewhat higher degree of neutralisation. “Lime requirements” should be obtained by interpolation to some arbitrary concentration, and an empirical relationship is given by which the interpolation may be made from a single determination. The Hutchinson-MacLennan method can give no indication of the intensity of soil acidity, but serves to estimate the amount of lime necessary to give a considerable reduction of acidity.

Field experiments consisting of three mulch treatments (no mulch, straw mulch and dust mulch) and six transpiration suppressants (no suppressant, kaolin, phenyl mercuric acetate, atrazine, mobileaf or alachlor and 2-chloro ethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride) were conducted under dryland conditions during the summer rainy seasons (July–November) of 1976, 1977 and 1978. Compared with no mulch, straw mulch increased yield in all 3 years, water use efficiency in 1977 and 1978, and uptake of N and of P in 1977 and 1978. Dust mulch had only a marginal advantage. Amongst transpiration suppressants, only kaolin and atrazine had a marked effect. Both these chemicals increased grain yield, water use efficiency and uptake of N and P, compared with no suppressant.

1. Pasture parameters have been correlated with animal production parameters from a trial in which two management systems (‘controlled’ and ‘uncontrolled’ grazing), each at two stocking rates (0.95 and 1.19 cows/acre), were compared.

2. Per acre butterfat production was positively related to percentage utilization of available D.M., but negatively related to yield of available D.M.

3. Per cow butterfat production was significantly and positively correlated with yield of available D.M. in the two months after calving (August and September) and in the penultimate month of lacta-tion (April), but this correlation was not significant in other months.

4. It is concluded that management system was as important as stocking rate in increasing the utilization of pasture and animal production from pasture.
