1. By premature harvesting, as early as 5 days after fertilization, dwarf grains are obtained which will germinate readily and produce normal plants, even though grain size may be only 10% that of fully developed grain. Such plants tend to attain the same final size as those from mature grain. This paper deals with the growth under field conditions of dwarf grain with regard to survival during the winter, and final yield.

2. Pot cultures with vernalized winter and spring varieties of rye, wheat, and barley have shown that the high growth rate characteristic of dwarf grain is not confined to the vegetative phase of growth, but is also manifested after the ear has developed. The fact emerges that dwarf grain can be successfully vernalized.

3. A field trial is described using three size classes of grain (mature, medium, dwarf) with mean grain weights of 33·93, 23·56 and 10·23 mg. respectively. These were sown (i) at sowing rates of 2 and 3 bushels per acre, and (ii) at uniform spacings of approximately 200 and 300 grains per 9 ft. row. A subsidiary experiment with spacing of 1 ft. was also carried out.

4. All classes of grain germinated well and survival during the winter was uniformly high in the equally spaced plots; with the close spacing of the dwarf grain at 2 and 3 bushels per acre (plots 11 and 12) percentage survival was somewhat reduced.

5. The effect of grain size and spacing on time of flowering was negligible.

The seasonal and post-partum oestrus occurrence and ovarian activity, assessed by the plasma progesterone concentrations, were studied in Finn-cross ewes following autumn and winter lambings.

The last seasonal oestrous cycle was followed by a silent ovulation in C0% of the Finn × Awassi ewes. Silent ovulations during midanoestrus occurred in 50% of the ewes, and in 90% of the animals a silent ovulation preceded the normal resumption of the seasonal sexual activity.

The first post-partum oestrus occurred within C0 days after October lambings in about 90% of the ewes. Silent ovulations before the first post-partum oestrus were evident in 70% of the recycling ewes.

It is suggested that breeding ewes with ovarian activity after oestrus induction during anoestrous periods might increase the reproductive performance of the flock in a frequent lambing system.

Rumen pH was varied and controlled over the range 5·2–7·1 by manipulating the infusions of buffer solution to the rumen and by using an automated system of recording pH. The total concentrations of volatile fatty acids (VFA) in the rumen were not altered by changes in pH but there were changes in the relative proportions of VFA. As the pH of rumen liquor fell, the proportion of acetic acid increased, and the proportions of propionic and butyric acids decreased relative to their respective proportions in the infusate. At rumen pH of about 7·2 the molar proportions found were similar to the molar proportions infused while at pH 5·3 the molar proportion for acetic acid in the rumen was 100 mmol/mol higher than in the infusate. There was no apparent relationship between osmotic pressure and differences between VFA proportions in the infusates and in the rumen liquor.

The nutritive value of a sample of artificially dried lucerne was determined calorimetrically in twelve experiments with three sheep.

A field plot experiment of 271 days duration was conducted on New Zealand irrigated pastures, commencing in the summer (January) 1988, on a Templeton silt loam soil (Udic Ustochrept) by applying 35sulphur (35S)-labelled urine (250 μCi/g S with 1300 μg S/ml) to field plots (600 × 600 mm) at a rate equivalent to that normally occurring in sheep urine patches (150 ml/0·03 m2) to investigate the distribution, transformations and recovery of urinary S in pasture soil–plant systems and sources of plant-available soil S as influenced by the available soil moisture at the time of urine application and varying amounts of applied irrigation water. Results obtained showed that c. 55–90% of 35S-labelled urine was incorporated into soil sulphate (SO42−), ester SO42− and carbon (C)-bonded S fractions within the major plant rooting zone (0–300 mm), as early as 27 days after urine application. Hydriodic acid (Hl)-reducible and C-bonded soil S fractions showed no consistent trend of incorporation. On day 271, labelled-S was found in soil SO42−, Hl-reducible S and C-bonded S fractions to a soil depth of 500 mm, indicating that not only SO42− but also organic S fractions from soils and 35S-labelled urine were leached beyond the major rooting zone. A large proportion (c. 59–75%) of 35S-labelled urine was not recovered in pasture soil–plant systems over a 271-day period, presumably due to leaching losses beyond the 0–300 mm soil depth. This estimated leaching loss was comparable to that (75%) predicted using the S model developed by the New Zealand Ministry of Agriculture. The recovery of urinary S in soil–plant systems over a 271-day period was not affected by different amounts of irrigation water applied 7 days after urine application to soil at either 50 or 75% available water holding capacity (AWHC). However, significantly lower S recovery occurred when urinary S was applied to the soil at 25% AWHC than at field capacity, suggesting that urinary S applied at field capacity might not have sufficient time to be adsorbed by soil particles, enter soil micropores or be immobilized by soil micro-organisms. Both soil ester SO42− and calcium phosphate-extractable soil S in urine-treated soils were found to be major S sources for pasture S uptake. Labelled S from 35S-labelled urine accounted for c. 12–47% of total S in pasture herbage.

The current study evaluated the uncertainty of beef cattle supply for slaughter due to the variable climate of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The data included the numbers of cattle slaughtered, local live cattle prices, price and amount of exported beef, and the prices of the Brazilian beef futures market. Data were collected on the beef supply from January 1997 to March 2014. Climate data included El Niño (EN), La Niña (LN), South Atlantic Sub-tropical Dipole (SASD), Negative and Positive Atlantic Dipole (−AD and +AD), Tropical South and North Atlantic indices. Statistical analysis was performed by a multivariate regression of time series. It was observed that EN and SASD climatic variables increased the numbers of beef cattle slaughtered, with a 1 and 4-month lag, respectively. On the other hand, LN and -AD decreased the number of animals slaughtered, with 4 and 0 months’ lag, respectively, meaning that there was an immediate response to −AD, while there was a 4-month delay for LN. The amount of exported beef and live beef cattle prices were explained by the number of animals slaughtered in the state. Data suggested that the beef cattle market in RS was more strongly influenced by the occurrence of climate phenomena with LN and −AD than by economic variables such as the price paid to the producer for beef and the amount exported. The climate changes evaluated in the current study affect the livestock production system and consequently the beef market industry in Southern Brazil.

An experiment was carried out to examine the effects of offering beef steers grass silage (GS) as the sole forage, lupins/triticale silage (LTS) as the sole forage, a mixture of LTS and GS at a ratio of 70:30 on a dry matter (DM) basis, vetch/barley silage (VBS) as the sole forage, a mixture of VBS and GS at a ratio of 70:30 on a DM basis, giving a total of five silage diets. Each of the five silage diets was supplemented with 2 and 5 kg of concentrates/head/day in a 5 × 2 factorial design to evaluate the five silages at two levels of concentrate intake and to examine possible interactions between silage type and concentrate intake. A total of 80 beef steers were used in the 122-day experiment. The GS was well preserved while the whole crop cereal/legume silages had high ammonia-nitrogen (N) concentrations, low lactic acid concentrations and low butyric acid concentrations For GS, LTS, LTS/GS, VBS and VBS/GS, respectively, silage DM intakes were 6.5, 7.0, 7.2, 6.1 and 6.6 (s.e.d. 0.55) kg/day and live weight gains were 0.94, 0.72, 0.63, 0.65 and 0.73 (s.e.d. 0.076) kg/day. Silage type did not affect carcass fatness, the colour or tenderness of meat or the fatty acid composition of the intramuscular fat in the longissimus dorsi muscle.

In this study, sows were fed 200 (LD), 800 (ND) and 3200 (HD) IU of vitamin D3/kg basal diet during pregnancy (from 41 d to birth), respectively. All their offspring pigs were fed the same vitamin D3 replete die. At 150 days of age, a total of 18 offspring pigs (six offspring pigs per maternal diet group, sex balance) were weighed and slaughtered to investigate effects of maternal vitamin D3 during pregnancy on fatty acids synthase (FASN) and hormone-sensitive lipase (LIPE) expression in offspring pigs. The results showed that LD offspring pigs had higher FASN mRNA expression and the ratio of FASN/LIPE mRNA expression in subcutaneous adipose tissue, as well as higher LIPE mRNA expression of longissimus dorsal muscle, whereas, had lower the ratio of FASN/LIPE mRNA expression in longissimus dorsal muscle compared with ND or HD offspring pigs, respectively. Meanwhile, LD offspring pigs had higher carcass fat, average backfat thickness (ABFT), serum insulin and leptin levels, lower intramuscular fat (IMF), serum free fatty acid and triglycerol levels compared with ND or HD offspring pigs. In addition, the ratio of FASN/LIPE mRNA expression was negatively correlated with IMF content, and positively correlated to carcass fat content and ABFT in offspring pigs. Meanwhile, FASN mRNA expression was positively correlated with carcass fat content, while negatively correlated with ABFT in offspring pigs. These results suggested that maternal vitamin D3 affected fat accumulation and meat quality by regulating FASN and LIPE mRNA expression in offspring pigs.

The benefits of using white clover (Trifolium repens L.) as a source of nitrogen (N) and nutritious feed in pasture grazed by ruminant livestock have been widely recognized. However, clover is considered inadequate and unreliable as the main source of N input, since its abundance in pasture is patchy, low (typically <0·20) and shows great year-to-year variation. This is thought to be due to the metabolic costs of N fixation, competition with grass, the preference for clover by grazing animals and patchy dung and urine deposition. One solution suggested by a number of authors is to increase the heterogeneity within the pasture by spatially separating clover from grass. This method of pasture management, in order to sustain higher clover content in both the sward and diet of grazing animals, would remove inter-specific competition and equalize grazing pressure, allowing clover to grow unimpeded in greater abundance than previously observed. An existing spatially explicit grass–clover simulation model, developed to investigate the intrinsic spatial and temporal variability within mixed grass–clover swards, was modified and then used to examine the impact of spatial separation on the content, variability and patchiness of clover in pasture. The results show that spatial separation increases both the content and spatial aggregation of clover and reduces year-to-year variation compared with a mixed pasture that fluctuates around a lower mean. The same model was also used to examine the impact of spatial separation across a range of spatial scales, from narrow strips to complete separation, as a means of managing the concerns over disruption to the N cycle within the pasture. The present study shows the importance of the initial sowing arrangement of plant species in sustaining a high content of clover within a pasture in the short term, to at least 20 years depending on the scale of separation, and demonstrates that the spatial separation of clover from grass within a grazed pasture may overcome some of the limitations associated with the use of clover in conventional grass–clover pastures. Results are discussed in terms of benefits to both herbage dry matter production and animal performance.

This trial concerns the induction of pregnancy in two flocks of Clun maiden yearling ewes and involves seventy-six animals. Previous observations suggested that treatment of this particular category usually gives rise to a higher conception percentage than is found with dry post-partum or lactating sheep. The trial sought to elucidate some factors of animal and environment which may be associated with this response.

In flock 45, during the period 10 February to 29 March, observations were made on the incidence of spontaneous breeding activity in forty-seven ewes; hormonal therapy was first applied at the latter date. Treatment for all ewes consisted of three doses of 50 mg. progesterone (in oil) given at 3-day intervals; a single dose of 750 i.u. p.m.s. was administered 2 days after final progesterone.

Nineteen of the forty-seven ewes (40%) in flock 45 showed spontaneous oestrus in February or March. Three (16%) of those ewes previously mated came in oestrus after treatment; forty-nine of the fiftyseven unmated ewes (86%) showed oestrus 3–5 days after the end of injection. Of the nineteen sheep that mated spontaneously, ten (53%) produced autumn lambs. Twenty-six of the fifty-two sheep (50%) served in response to the progesterone-p.m.s. therapy conceived. 1·25 lambs were born per ewe that lambed. Some evidence for total embryonic or foetal loss in the ewes during pregnancy was obtained. Results indicate that conception in these maiden ewes may have been facilitated by the presence of corpora lutea or recent luteal activity, which maintained the oestrogen-progesterone balance necessary for providing an adequate uterine environment. For this reason, maiden ewes of breeds with short breeding seasons (e.g. Scotch Half-Breds) may not give such satisfactory response when injected at times comparable to long season breeds, such as the Clun.

The study was conducted to investigate the effects of fish or palm oil diets with different roughage levels on dairy performance, milk physicochemical composition and apparent transfer efficiency of fatty acids (FA) in goat milk. The experiment was conducted with 40 Aleppo goats with a mean parity of 2.53 ± 0.8 (multiparous), mean initial body weight of 47.23 kg and 25 ± 5 days in milk which were allocated to four (2 × 2) experimental diets with two oil sources (fish or palm oil) at 25.6 g/kg of dietary dry matter and forage levels (400 or 600 g/kg). The experimental data were analysed by repeated measures analysis, using the MIXED procedure. The concentrations of saturated FA decreased with high forage level and fish oil diets; however, the fish oil diets caused an increase in C14 saturated FA. Fish oil diets with high roughage levels more efficiently increased conjugated linoleic acid, n-6 (18 : 2), and n-3 (20 : 5). The apparent transfer efficiency of 18 : 1, 18 : 2, 18 : 3 and 20 : 5 decreased and the transfer efficiency of 22 : 6 increased with the use of fish oil in the diet. The roughage level did not affect the apparent transfer efficiency of 18 : 1 and 18 : 2, but the low roughage level increased the apparent transfer efficiency of 20 : 5. High roughage diets improved milk quality parameters through increasing eicosapentaenoic acid, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), PUFA/saturated FA and atherogenicity index, thus it was concluded that dietary roughage level could be considered as an important designator of milk quality when a supplement of fish oil and palm oil was supplied to goats.

15N-labelled fertilizer urea was applied at increasing rates (0–200 kg N/ha), in spring, to winter wheat crops in the Canterbury region of New Zealand in three successive seasons (1993/94, 1994/95 and 1995/96). Recovery of fertilizer N by the crop (grain, chaff, straw and roots) ranged from 43–58% (mean 48%). The quantity of fertilizer N retained in the soil (0–40 cm), at harvest, ranged from 26–42%. Of the labelled N present in the soil, over 95% was present in organic form and 60–80% was retained in the surface 0–10 cm layer. Since soil organic matter represents a substantial sink for fertilizer N there is a need to characterize the nature of this organic pool of N more fully. The quantity of inorganic N present in the soil profile at harvest ranged from 20–46 kg N/ha and labelled fertilizer-derived N contributed less than 16% (mean 9·2%) to this inorganic pool. Loss of fertilizer N from the crop/soil system (i.e., labelled N not recovered in the crop or soil at harvest) varied from 12–26% (mean 18%). Losses were attributed mainly to denitrification since conditions were not conducive for ammonia volatilization or leaching of nitrate. In agreement with European research, it was concluded that almost all of the N at risk of leaching over the winter originates from mineralization of soil organic N and not from unused fertilizer-N applied in spring.

Crops of potatoes grown on 0·2–0·3 ha in each of the years 1971–8 at Stockbridge House Experimental Horticulture Station achieved total tuber yields of 70–94 t/ha. Yield was determined by the period and rate of tuber growth. The observed period of growth varied from 96 to 132 days and the rate from 0·55 to 0·90 t/ha/day. Rate of growth had the greater influence on variability of yield between the years. The number of tubers produced per unit area had little influence on their total weight, but had marked effect on their size. Adequate water supply was essential for very high yields. Experiments indicated that current recommendations for potash fertilizer can be adequate but that nitrogen and phosphate fertilizer use may need to be enhanced for very high yields. For high yields, the number of seeds planted per hectare may need to be higher than normally recommended in order to avoid the production of large tubers unsuitable for the ware market.

A replicated field plot experiment was carried out in Northern Ireland in 1996 with flax, cv Ariane, and linseed, cv Flanders, each grown at seed rates of 500, 1000 and 1500 seeds/m2, in which a comparison was made between retting of the standing crop, following desiccation by the trimesium salt of glyphosate (Touchdown, Zeneca Ltd.), and water or dew retting of the pulled crop. Application at 4 litres/ha on 9 August, 33 days after the mid-point of flowering (MPF), achieved both desiccation and partial retting of the crop within 14 days. Over 16% clean long fibre was extracted by scutching the stand-retted flax straw, yielding 800 kg/ha fibre, while water retting achieved 20% extraction and 980 kg/ha yield and dew retting 8·5% and 420 kg/ha respectively. The dew retting was uneven, resulting in high losses during fibre extraction, while water retting for 7 days at 25 °C did not achieve complete retting resulting in a high content of woody fragments in the fibre. Fibre yields increased by almost 50% with the high v. low seed rate. Linseed was less well retted than flax and contained higher levels of impurity in the extracted long fibre which, after retting, yielded 120 to 310 kg/ha at extraction rates of 2·9% to 7·5%.

In a second experiment in 1998 flax cvs. Viola and Evelyn were treated with the timesium salt of glyphosate at rates of 2, 4 or 6 litres/ha 10, 20, 30 or 40 days after MPF on 5 July. Viola desiccated satisfactorily at all spray dates with 4 and 6 litres/ha glyphosate. The 20-day treatment desiccated more slowly than the 30-day and the 2 litres/ha rate did not achieve complete desiccation, but the trimesium salt of glyphosate achieved better desiccation at this timing than that found in earlier studies with the original form of glyphosate. Evelyn desiccated more slowly and less evenly than Viola particularly at the 20-day and 40-day timings. Spraying at MPF+10 days interrupted early development of the seed and fibre significantly reducing yields. Due to slower desiccation the 20-day timing was no better than the 30-day, which was well retted by harvest 44 days after spraying, and gave the highest yield of clean long fibre. The spraying 40 days after MPF was considered too late in the season to be of practical use. It was concluded that retting of standing flax following desiccation with the trimesium salt of glyphosate was more effective than with the earlier formulation and that retting of the standing crop could achieve equivalent or better retting with similar fibre yields to traditional retting methods. The optimum spray timing was found to be about 30 days after MPF with 4 or 6 litres/ha, the lower rate being adequate for glyphosate responsive varieties such as Viola.

Maize (Zea mays L.) is a major staple food and cash crop in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). However, its production and productivity are severely constrained by drought. A total of 120 single-cross hybrids and an open-pollinated control variety were evaluated for 2 years at two locations under managed drought and rain-fed conditions in Nigeria. The objective of the present study was to assess their performance, classify them into distinct heterotic groups and identify promising hybrids for commercialization in the West and Central Africa sub-region. General combining ability and specific combining ability mean squares were highly significant for grain yield and other traits under the research environments. However, there was a preponderance of additive gene action over non-additive. Only six out of 39 inbreds were classified into distinct heterotic groups by the testers. The highest-yielding drought-tolerant hybrid, TZEEI 102 × TZEEI 95, out-yielded the open-pollinated control variety by 43·70%. The average yield reduction under drought was 54·90% of the yield under rain-fed conditions. The hybrids TZEEI 81 × TZEE1 79, TZEEI 100 × TZEEI 63 and TZEEI 64 × TZEEI 79 were the highest-yielding and most stable across environments. These outstanding drought-tolerant hybrids, which are also resistant to Striga, have the potential to contribute to food security and increased incomes in SSA and should be tested extensively on-farm and commercialized.

The results so far recorded in this series of investigations are discussed in their bearing on the hypothesis according to which the humic matter of soil is derived from lignin.

This hypothesis is supported, but since the artificial product prepared from lignin is nitrogen-free, whereas the natural product contains nitrogen, further progress in the elucidation of the nature and origin of humic matter is dependent on a study of the part played by nitrogen in the formation of humic matter, and the form in which it occurs.

Twenty Small Tailed Han (STH) and 20 Ujumqin (UJU) ewes naturally infected with gastrointestinal nematodes were randomly assigned to one of four treatments arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial design, receiving anthelmintic treatment (AT) or non-anthelmintic treatment (NonAT) prior to lambing. After lambing, the effects of AT on feed intake, digestion and milk yield in ewes, and the growth rates of lambs fed their mother's milk were assessed for 28 days. Faecal samples were collected to determine faecal egg counts (FECs), milk was collected to measure milk yield and ewes and lambs were weighed to quantify daily body weight change. The results showed that AT significantly increased ewe dry matter intake (2411 g/d for AT and 2209 g/d for NonAT) and decreased FECs (50 eggs/g for AT and 2655 eggs/g for NonAT). All ewes lost weight after lambing, but body weight loss in the AT (43 g/d) was significantly less than in NonAT (84 g/d), and STH ewes (70 g/d) lost more weight than UJU ewes (58 g/d). Anthelmintic-treated ewes produced more milk for their lambs to consume. However, the extent of these positive effects of AT differed between STH and UJU ewes. The average daily body weight gain of lambs in AT was higher than those in NonAT. In conclusion, effective AT in ewes before lambing benefits subsequent lactation in ewes and growth rate in lambs.

The objective of the current study was to undertake a preliminary characterization of liveweight components in adult coypus at slaughter. Greenland (14 females, 7 males) and Silver (78 females, 36 males) breeds were grown on a farm south-east of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The animals were slaughtered aged 419±22 days. Liveweight at slaughter was measured and the weights of hot carcass, fur, head, liver, lungs plus heart, digestive tract (with contents) plus reproductive organs and fur length were recorded. The weights of these body components were also expressed as proportion of liveweight, except for the fur length. Data were analysed and the effects of sex, variety, reproductive state within sex and rearing management within sex were included in the model. The age of the animals at the time of slaughter was used as covariate. Breeds differed only in liver weight (P<0·05), where Greenland was 15·9% heavier than Silver; however when comparisons were made as proportion of liveweight, no differences between breeds were found in the variables analysed. Sexual dimorphism was evident in almost all of the characteristics analysed, values for males being higher than for females. Males were 29% heavier at slaughter than females and their carcasses 31·7% heavier. When body components were expressed as proportion of liveweight, male heads were heavier but fur was lighter compared to females. In conclusion, there were differences in body components due to sex but not due to breed. However, most body components when expressed as proportion of liveweight showed no significant differences.

The efficiency of the triple test cross (TTC) and the six-population biometrical analyses was compared in terms of assessing and quantifying the components of genetic variance for two faba bean crosses: Triple White×Giza 843 and NA112×Giza 429. Several traits were studied including days to first flower, plant height, branches/plant, pods/plant, seeds/pod, 100-seed weight and seed yield/plant. The results supported the triple test cross biometrical approach as it uses first degree statistics and can be applied to any population irrespective of its genetic architecture. Absence of a scalar relationship between triple test cross families (orthogonality) ensures independence between means and variance with no restrictive assumptions. Both methods provided evidence for epistasis, and both additive and dominance genetic components in the genetic control of the studied traits.
