Insect growth regulating properties of petroleum ether extracts of 10 indigenous plants were tested against Culex pipiens fatigans (Wied) and Musca domestica nebulo (Fabr) by continuous exposure and topical application methods. Out of the 10 plants, Acorus calamus and Azadirachta indica demonstrated insect growth regulatory (IGR) activity against C. p. fatigans and also against M. d. nebulo. There was IGR activity, but this was observed only when these extracts were used in higher concentration.

Zea mays L. and Rottboellia exaltata L. were the main graminaceous plant species infested by Eldana saccharina Walker, the major pest of sugar-cane in southern Ghana. Other stem-borers of sugar-cane, Sesamia botanephaga Tams and Bowden, Sesamia penniseti Tams and Bowden, Sesamia calamistis Hampson and Chilo zacconius Bleszynski, were recorded on Zea mays, Echinocloa pyramidalis (Lamk.) et Chase, Rottboellia exaltata, Panicum maximum Jacquin and Oryza sativa L.

All the stem-borer populations except E. saccharina on Rottboellia exaltata increased on their host plants. Sesamia and Chilo species were present from January to December on Echinocloa pyramidalis. It is concluded that these alternative host plants provide a potential source of stem-borer infestation on sugar-cane at Asutsuare in southern Ghana.

This Symposium was held on 1 September 1986 to assess available resources and current requirements for biosystematic research, identification and other services in support of entomological work in the tropics, especially in Africa, India and S.E. Asia. Particular attention was given to biosystematic services for agriculture and to the need for long-term financial support to maintain and develop reference collections; to train and employ taxonomists; to provide identification services and to undertake biosystematic research at local, national, regional and international levels.

Knowledge on the natural enemies of graminaceous stem borers is outlined, with special reference to mortality of Chilo spp. as crop pests in Africa. The quantitative scanty information available suggests that over 90% mortality of eggs and larvae takes place before the larvae become established as borers in the crop and that mortality of the older larvae and pupae is much lower. Possible manipulations of natural enemies to increase mortality further are reviewed. In view of the largely negative results of past classical biological control introductions the prospects do not appear very promising. However, the results do indicate some possibilities which should be investigated, notably trials with Apanteles spp. (Braconidae) and intra-continental redistribution of important species with restricted distributions. For short-term biological control, development of microbial biopesticides seems a more promising strategy than augmentation of insect parasitoids by breeding and release, particularly on small farms. A third possibility, enhancement of the action of native natural enemies by environmental manipulation, merits more attention as part of an integrated crop production approach to the improvement of the quantity and reliability of yields for the small farmer.

Busseola fusca Fuller is one of the major lepidopteran stemborers of maize and sorghum in Africa. Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is an indigenous, gregarious larval endoparasitoid that attacks mid- to late-instar stemborer larvae, which is reported to be one of the most important larval parasitoids of B. fusca in many countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Previous work has shown that two biotypes of C. sesamiae occur in Kenya which express differential abilities to develop in B. fusca. A biotype from western Kenya successfully develops in B. fusca, while a biotype from the eastern coastal area does not. We treated fourth-instars of B. fusca with calyx fluid from C. sesamiae from western Kenya (Kitale) before offering them to C. sesamiae from the Coast (Mombasa) for oviposition, and found that the eggs were not encapsulated. This suggests that factors in the calyx fluid of C. sesamiae from the western Kenya biotype were responsible for suppressing the immune system of B. fusca. We speculate that polydnaviruses in the calyx fluid were involved in disarming the host immune system, and that the polydnaviruses in the two biotypes are genetically different.

Earias vittella (Fabricius) feeds on some malvaceous plant species, but has never been reported to attack Thespesia populnea Cav., even though this plant belongs to the same family. The factors responsible for the failure of E. vittella to establish on T. populnea were, therefore, studied. When whole fruits or fruit pericarps of this plant were provided as larval food, larvae failed to develop and none of them pupated. However, on developing seeds of these fruits, larval growth and development were normal and comparable to those of larvae reared on developing seeds of the most favoured host plant, Abelmoschus esculentus Moench. Ether extracts from fruit pericarps exhibited antifeedant and antibiosis activity against this insect. Ether as well as ethanol extracts affected oviposition to some extent. In a choice situation, significantly less eggs were laid on treated than on untreated okra fruits. However, in a no-choice situation most of the eggs were laid on treated okra fruits.

The effect of some rice varieties on the biology of the stalk-eyed fly Diopsis thoracica West was investigated. The rice varieties affected the developmental period from egg laying to adult emergence, the sex ratio, percentage survival, adult weights on emergence, ovary development and the rate of tiller damage by a single larva. The rice varieties OS6 and Tos 4121 were consistently the most unfavourable in terms of insect growth; but were the most susceptible in terms of damage. Thus varietal susceptibility to damage by the insect seemed to be different from varietal suitability for its growth.

The head capsule widths of larvae of the cowpea pod-borer Maruca testulalis, reared individually and crowded together in the laboratory were measured. The measurements were subjected to a test of analysis of variance, frequency distribution and Dyar's rule. All methods gave a total of five larval instars in the life cycle and conformed to Dyar's rule. There was a high positive correlation (r = 0.97) between the size of the head capsule and the period of development elapsing. The minimum duration of larval development was 9 days.

As part of an extensive and systematic programme to find genetic sources of resistance to Aphis craccivora, a major pest of cowpea, Vigna unguiculata, a total of 181 accessions from the germpiasm collection at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture were screened in glasshouse tests using a simple visual damage scale. Twenty-four accessions showed considerably reduced damage. To confirm these results on IS selected accessions, aphid population growth over 10 days was recorded. Zero aphids were found on three accessions (310,408-P2 and 801); another six accessions had populations of less than 30, compared with 200–400 on susceptible varieties. The other accessions showed only partial antibiosis and/or tolerance.

Several species of Chilo are serious pests (stem borers) of sorghum, maize, rice and sugar-cane. Studies on genetics of resistance to Chilo species have been carried out only In a few cases. In maize and sorghum resistance to C. partellus, measured in terms of leaf-feeding, dead hearts and stem-tunnelling is polygenic. Both additive and non-additive gene effects are important in the inheritance of resistance to C. partellus. However, the importance of additive and non-additive gene effects in determining resistance, varies with the resistance parameter in two crops. Resistance to leaf-feeding and stem-tunnelling is governed predominantly by additive genes, while both additive and non-additive genes are important in the inheritance of dead hearts. The non-additive gene action, however, is of higher magnitude and more important in the inheritance of resistance to dead hearts in maize than that in sorghum. Recurrent selection using S1, S2 lines would be efficient in increasing levels of resistance both in sorghum and maize. Tolerance should be considered as an important factor in sorghum breeding for borer resistance.

The level of resistance in rice to C. suppressalis is low to moderate and appears to be under polygenic control. A recurrent selection programme using male sterile lines could be effective in improving the level of resistance. No information is available on genetics of resistance to Chilo spp. in sugar-cane.

Scanning electron microscopic examination of the egg shell and associated structures of Eocanthecona furcellata (Wolff.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) reveals a distinct pattern of structural elements, viz. microsculpture of the chorion, pseudoperculum, egg burster and aeromicropylar processes. The egg shell has a highly decorated chorion with a structural difference at both the anterior and posterior ends. A reticulate type of microsculpture with varying sizes of spine-like projections measures 4.02 ± 0.06 to 8.12 ± 0.05 μm and forms an asteroid-like shape at the anterior pole, while the surface at the posterior end has elongated striations over the chorion measuring 72.00 ± 0.074 μm. The pseudoperculum of the egg shell is a circular lid measuring 518 ± 11.43 μm in diameter. During hatching the line of rupture follows the micropylar ring, and this sometimes extends beyond the ring of micropylar processes. An inverted T-shaped black egg burster measures 202 ± 4.63 μm in length, is well developed and can be seen prior to hatching within a thin and transparent egg shell. It is a median sclerotised part of embryonic cuticle. The aeromicropylar processes are situated at the anterior pole of the barrel-shaped eggs. There are 26–28 aeromicropylar processes arranged in a circle at almost equidistance and each micropylar process is slightly curved opposite to the pseudoperculum lid with a bulbous end at the apex. The aeromicropylar processes are 25.40 ± 0.083 μm in length and 3.02 ± 0.07 μm in width. Each micropylar process has a central canal for the passage of sperm whereas the rest of its body is porous, and allows respiratory interchange.

The Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus (Skuse) and the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) are medically important species that vector several arboviruses. Globally, populations of both species experience (and are sensitive to) photoperiodic variations. The present study aims to test if photoperiod regimes affect the population performance of Ae. albopictus and Ae. aegypti. Since mosquitoes have sex-specific strategies to maximize fitness, we also tested the hypothesis that Ae. albopictus and Ae. aegypti would exhibit differences in the male and female response (sexually dimorphic response) to various photoperiod treatments. We reared cohorts of first instar larvae to adulthood in three photoperiod treatments: short day (10 h light), control (12 h light) and long day (14 h light). We measured and compared survival to adulthood, population growth, development time of males and females, and wing length across treatments. Although we detected no effects of photoperiod on the population performance of both species, we found evidence of a sexual dimorphic response to photoperiod in Ae. albopictus, but not in Ae. aegypti, with Ae. albopictus females being more sensitive to variations in photoperiod. The observed differences between sexes of Ae. albopictus are consistent with sex-specific developmental constraints. The absence of a sexually dimorphic response to photoperiod in Ae. aegypti can be attributed to different strategies evolved in this species to prepare for unfavourable conditions associated with shorter day length. We discuss the ecological and medical implications of our findings.

The tsetse, Glossina morsitans morsitans, has two pairs of Malpighian tubules. Ultrastructurally, the tubules consist of three recognizable functional zones: the distal, intermediate and proximal regions, which are characterized by three distinct cell types: I, II and III respectively. The three cell types had numerous microvilli and basal infoldings: the microvilli of type I and II cells were associated with long mitochondria, while those of type III were devoid of mitochondria. Autoradiographic observations using (3H) glucose indicated that there was synthetic activity in the tubules, and that there was greater incorporation of the radiochemical in the distal and intermediate tubule regions than in the proximal region. The distal and intermediate regions have some functional similarities. With regard to primary urine formation in the tubules, it is suggested that the cell types I and II (and hence the distal and intermediate regions) are secretory, and the cell type III (that is, the proximal region) is absorptive. “Canaliculi” in the proximal region increase the surface area for absorption.

Genetic analysis of sorghum resistance to stem-borers was performed in a 6 × 6 diallel cross. The results indicated that resistance to stem-borers is polygenically inherited. F1 hybrids did not differ significantly from mid-parental values suggesting intermediate inheritance. However, resistance was partially dominant to susceptibility. Combining ability analysis showed that resistance to primary damage, i.e. % ‘dead heart’ was governed by both additive and non-additive type of gene actions while secondary damage, i.e. % stem tunnelling was governed predominantly by additive gene action. It was noted that the inheritance patterns of primary and secondary damage were different. Tunnel length showed positive correlation with the number of larvae per plant and negative association with plant height, but had no correlation with grain yield per plant. On the basis of larvae recovered from the tunnelled plants, Chilo partellus was found to be the predominant stem-borer species followed by Sesamia calamistis, Eldana saccharina and Busseola fusca. Significance of genetic studies of host plant resistance in deciding breeding strategies for insect resistance has been discussed.

Adults of various phlebotomine sandfly species were obtained from leishmaniases endemic foci in Kenya using several trapping methods. Ten species were successfully reared from egg to adult in the laboratory; and large colonies of Sergentomyia schwetzi, S. bedfordi, S. ingrami, S. antennatus, S. adleri, S. garnhami, Phlebotomus duboscqi and P. martini established. Generally, the development of Phlebotomus spp. from egg to adult took longer (54.7–57.2 days) than Sergentomyia spp. whose developmental time with the exception of S. garnhami, varied between 36.5–42.3 days.

The age-dependent fecundity and offspring production of females of a solitary ectoparasitoid Dinarmus basalis Rond. (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) were determined on its host Callosobruchus maculatus F. (Coleoptera: Bruchidae). The resulting data were used to determine the longevity and reproductive potential of the species, by establishing its life and fertility tables. In the presence of 16 hosts renewed every 48 hours, D. basalis females had a mean longevity of 32.6 ± 1.6 days. They laid an average of 136.5 ± 55.2 eggs, parasitised 132.7 ± 53.9 hosts, and produced 111.8 ± 3 offspring, consisting of 58.3 % of males and 41.7 for females. The total mean development time was 14.0 ± 0.7 days for females and 11.8 ± 0.8 days for males. The net reproductive rate (Ro) was 38.9 females progeny per adult female, and the intrinsic rate of population increase (rm) 0 16 per day. The generation time (G) was 22.5 days and the doubling time (DT) 4.3 days. These parameters permitted to determine the reproductive potential of D. basalis as a biological control agent against the bruchid in West Africa.

Between 1979 and 1982, H. hampei spread itself from a small area in the lowlands of central Jamaica, to the entire coffee growing region (alt. 15–1603 m) of the island. The levels of infestations in the 390 farms surveyed ranged from less than 5–100%; in plains it was about 45% but only about 3.4% at altitudes of over 1000 m. On a parish basis the infestation ranged from 2.8 to 19.17% (mean 9.45%) in June 1982, before the spraying with thiodan EC35 began.

In November 1982, 8 weeks after the last spray of the three-spray cycle, the infestation levels ranged between 1 and 20.21% (mean 9.56%). In fact, it had increased from about 6.7% in 1979 to 9.56% in 1982, despite the multi-million dollar spraying programme over 4 years. The shortcomings of the chemical control strategy are discussed and an integrated approach involving chemical and cultural practices is advocated.

No insect parasite or predator of H. hampei were found in Jamaica; the fungus Beauvaria bassiana was however, found to have inflicted 6–40% mortality in the adult borer.

The present article considers quantitative assessment of crop losses in relation to attack by three trophic levels of insect pests on maize, cowpea and sorghum intercropping systems. The trophic levels considered are (i) specialist feeders subsisting only on one crop within the intercropping systems, e.g. Maruca testulalis (Geyer) on cowpea, and Atherigona soccata (Rondani) on sorghum; (ii) the relative specialist feeders subsisting on two out of the three crops e.g. Busseola fusca (Fuller), Chilo partellus (Swinh.) Sesamia calamistis (Hmps.) and Eldana saccharina (Wlk.) feeding on maize and sorghum cereal plants; and (iii) the generalist feeders e.g. Heliothis armigera (Hbn.) which feeds on all three plant species. Tests for loss assessment were done under natural field conditions within maize, cowpea, sorghum monocropping patterns; maize–cowpea, maize–sorghum, sorghum–cowpea dicropping patterns; and the maize–cowpea–sorghum tricrop intercropping patterns. The authors discuss in detail their modified analytical methods based on the comparison of yield of sets of plants growing under identical conditions except that one set is unattacked by the stem-/pod-borers and the other set attacked, to generate economic losses. The comparative advantages of the planting systems on crop turnover is further discussed. The biomass and plant population fluctuations caused by pest attacks and ‘dead hearts’ at differential time scales in indices of yield have also been discussed. Yield per unit area of monocrop and intercropping patterns have been contrasted using the yield turnover of monocrop plant equivalence as the baseline for comparisons. Maize–cowpea–sorghum mixed intercrop of 1.45 land equivalent ratio (LER), and that for the sorghum–cowpea dicrop with 1.3 LER are considered the most advantageous cropping patterns. Yield losses significantly higher (P < 0.05) within maize-sorghum intercropping combinations with 0.89 LER further suggests that stem-borer colonisation which occurs at an earlier stage of crop establishment resulting in ‘dead hearts’ and significant reduction on plant population per unit area within the two cereal combinations contribute significantly to the overall reduction in crop turnover within such mixtures.

Sun-dried guava (Psidium guajava L.) and eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus L.) leaves were evaluated as repellent and toxic materials against the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae L., and the granary weevil, Sitophilus granarius L. under laboratory conditions. LC50 values of sun-dried guava and eucalyptus leaves admixed with rice grains against S. oryzae were 2.251 and 4.140g leaves/100g rice grains, respectively, while they were 2.278 and 4.857 g leaves/100 g rice grains in the case of S. granarius, respectively. Guava leaves were more toxic for both species than eucalyptus leaves. Eucalyptus leaves were more repellent than guava leaves.

Both test materials at 15 g/100 g depressed the progeny development of the test insects.

Moisture content, hardness or consistency, and age of diet were some of the properties studied for their effect on survival, growth and development of Sesamia inferens Walker. Survival of larvae was maximum on diet with 66.1% moisture. Increase or decrease in moisture resulted in excessive stickiness or dryness to the diet. Reduction in moisture content in the artificial diet was dependent on particle size of bulk constituent. Proper consistency or hardness resulting from 1.8 and 2.2% agar permitted higher number of larvae to reach pupal stage. Diet stored for 24 hr and 48 hr provided favourable conditions for the early instar larvae to establish on the diet.
