Oedaleus senegalensis is a mainly sahelian non gregarious grasshopper which is today considered as the most important crop pest acridid, especially on millet. The species has three generations per year (rarely four) and spends the dry season as diapausing/quiescent eggs. Both photoperiod and temperature influence the induction of diapause in which O. senegalensis eggs can survive several years. Migratory movements have been reported by many authors; adults may migrate up to 350 km per night. These factors enable the species' adaptation to its natural hostile environment. The current control strategies are based on monitoring of the oviposition sites of the dry season to predict the subsequent outbreaks in order to control early hatchlings during the following rainy season. The present work gives an overview of the current knowledge on the morphology, biology, ecology and control methods of the grasshopper.

Studies on the vertical distribution of phlebotomine sandflies were carried out at Marigat (Kenya) at determined heights above ground level in both wooded and open fields. Traps set up at different heights from 0–11 m (in wooded area) and 0–9 m (in open field), showed a clear vertical zonation of sandflies as large numbers were collected between 0–7 m in the first site and 0–4 m in the second ones. Among the nine sandfly species collected, Sergentomyia bedfordi Newstead and S. antennatus Newstead were the only species recorded at a height of 11 m above the ground and the commonest sandflies at all studied heights. Overall, more sandflies were collected from the wooded area than the open field. The relationships between the sandfly relative abundance and their heights of flight above the ground showed significant negative correlation coefficients.

Laboratory trials were conducted in Uganda at the Kawanda Agricultural Research Institute to determine attraction, eclosion success and larval survivorship of the banana weevil Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar) on crop residues of different ages. In the first experiment, studies focused on different types and ages of residues of one susceptible highland banana clone ‘Nabusa’ (genome group AAA-EA). Corms attracted 65% of the test weevils, pseudostems 30%, while 5% were non-respondents. Oviposition levels and the number of eggs per female were higher on young than old corms. Eclosion rates of < 1-day-old eggs inserted into corm pieces of residues (cultivar ‘Kisansa’, genome group AAA-EA) declined from 66% in residues collected < 2 days after harvest (DAH) to 58% in residues collected >30 DAH. To assess immature survival, < 1-day-old 1st instar larvae were put on banana corms of suckers and crop residues of the cultivar Kisansa in single rearing chambers. The number of surviving individuals was recorded at 3-day intervals until adults emerged. Survivorship was 12% on sword suckers, 10% on maiden suckers and 7% on flowered plants; and 12% on residues collected < 2 DAH and 5% on residues collected >30 DAH. Larval duration and mean days taken for adult emergence increased with plant and crop residue age. Females emerging from the different plant and residues treatments were similar in weight. The data suggest that all aged residues are suitable hosts for C. sordidus, suggesting that sanitation practices should be implemented soon after harvest.

Interspecific competition within larvae of the fall army worm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), by the larval parasitoids, Cotesia(= Apanteles) marginiventris Cresson and Microplitis manilae Ashmead, and the egg-larval parasitoid Chelonus insularis Cresson was studied. Chelonus insularis was not able to compete successfully against Cotesia marginiventris, but was a successful competitor against Microplitis manilae. Multiple parasitization of larvae by either Cotesia marginiventris or Microplitis manilae, which as eggs were parasitized by Chelonus insularis, did not result in additional host mortality. Percentage parasitization under greenhouse conditions by Cotesia marginiventris of larvae parasitized previously by Chelonus insularis was two-fold higher in corn compared to sorghum and more than four-fold higher compared to Bermuda grass and itch grass. The host finding and behavioural sequence of oviposition of Cotesia marginiventris in FAW larvae already parasitized by Chelonus insularis consisted of nine steps. Microplitis manilae females changed their behaviour significantly by displaying a reduction of ca. fifty per cent in host examinations, 45% in ovipositor probes, and 55% in apparent ovipositions when Chelonus insularis parasitized larvae were presented. Cotesia marginiventris and Microplitis manilae exhibited no significant behavioural changes in the per cent contacts, examinations and apparent ovipositions when attacking larvae parasitized previously by either Cotesia marginiventris or Microplitis manilae.

Some properties of the gut amylase of Sophrorhinus insperatus Faust have been studied. The enzyme has maximum activity at pH 5.0 and 45°C. It is activated by C−, Ca2+ and Cd2+ tons and inhibited by Cu2+ and Hg2+ lons. Low Michaelis constants of 0.26 mg/ml and 032 mg/ml were obtained for the larva and adult gut amylases. Enzymatic activity was found to be consistently higher in the larva than in adult stage, probably suggesting the larval stage as the most destructive stage. Extracts of Cola nitida (Vent) Schott and Endlicher and C. acuminata (Pal de Beauv) Schott and Endlicher, inhibited amylase activity in vitro at varying magnitudes. The higher level of inhibitors in C. acuminata is an index of its low susceptibility to weevil attack both on the field and at storage.

We selected 50 crystal (Cry) toxins specific to lepidopteran insects. Phylogenetic relationships of whole toxins as well as individual domains revealed that Cry1Jb and Cry1Ac are distantly placed but related to reduced cross-resistance in Helicoverpa armigera. Multiple alignments of Cry1Jb and Cry1Ac amino acid sequences showed significant differences in the composition and length of the loops of domains II and III. This was further confirmed by the superpositioning of 3D structures. cry1Jb and cry1Ac genes cloned in expression vectors were overexpressed in Escherichia coli Castellani & Chalmers, and proteins were harvested. Insect bioassays revealed that the wild-type Cry1Jb and Cry1Ac proteins showed differential specificity to H. armigera (Hübner), Spodoptera litura (Fab.) and Earias vittella F. Chimeric genes were constructed by exchanging the domains between cry1Jb and cry1Ac and overexpressed in BL21(DE3). Substitution of domain III of Cry1Jb with that of Cry1Ac enhanced its activity against H. armigera 7.8-fold. Bioassay of the parental and chimeric toxins against S. litura revealed no activity even at the discriminative dose of 100 μg/ml, but a significant difference in growth was observed. The present results, along with previous domain swapping experiments, suggest that protein engineering not only reveals the mechanism by which endotoxins work, but also generates novel toxins with enhanced toxicity/broader specificity.

This paper combines some of the results from three studies that explain the system by which the gut of Phlebotomus papatasi is maintained bacteria free. This system includes an antibacterial factor in the crop (diverticulum) and feeding behaviour which determines selective routing of meals. When feeding by piercing animal skin or plant tissue, in a ‘blood feeding’ mode, the uncontaminated meals of both sources enter the midgut directly. Free-solution sugar-meals which may contain contaminants, enter the crop where they mix with the antibacterial agent. Feeding on plants is also described.

Factors contributing to host plant resistance in sorghum to Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) were studied. Oviposition on the plants in the field started 3 weeks after germination and peaked 2–6 weeks later. Egg batches (96.1%) were laid on the leaf blades compared with 3.9% on the leaf sheaths. On the leaf blades, significantly more egg batches were laid on the upper (57.2%) than on the lower leaf surfaces. In young plants, leaves attached to the upper and lower segments were preferred for oviposition, while leaves in the upper segments more or less maintained their share of egg batches over time; there was a shift from the leaves in the lower to those in the middle segments with the plant age. Differences among sorghum lines for oviposition were significant and these lines were divided into three categories based on their levels of oviposition.

Sorghum plants reacted to insect feeding in the stem by production of a red staining compound which did not significantly affect the development of the insect. Four damage symptoms were observed and these were related to different plant ages. Plants compensated damage by the production of extra tillers, some of which produced panicles that were ready by approximately the time of harvest. Plants infested 2 weeks after germination produced maximum tillers and juvenile panicles; and also had the least effective tillers, plant heights and grain yields. Grain yields were depressed in the infested plants for the cultivars tested, except in LC 119/80–3 where there were actual grain yield gains.

Leaf-feeding and ‘dead heart’ scores, which were related to reduced plant heights and yields in some of the cultivars tested, are proposed as rational indices for susceptibility ratings and monitoring of crop losses.

The life patterns of cassava green spider mite populations were compared using characteristics of spinning behaviour and other associated biological parameters so as to determine the possibility of using these criteria for separating closely related forms or populations of Mononychellus complex of species. These included web structure and density, preferred site for oviposition, feeding, walking, defecation, quiescence, spinning behaviour during walking and type of egg cover. Of these, preferred site for feeding, walking, quiescence and spinning behaviour during walking were found to be consistent and could possibly be used in comparative studies on different mite populations. The surface structure of the leaves i.e. pubescence, and mite population density were found to affect some of the behaviour patterns. Detailed studies on the influence of other factors, such as host plant variety, stage of plant growth, age of leaf colonized, weather, etc. will be necessary to determine the usefulness of these biological criteria in separating sympatric and allopatric populations of the mite.

Insects exhibiting swarming habits in Lake Victoria include mainly the Chironomidae, the Chaoboridae and Povilla adusta (Ephemeroptera). Their early life cycles are spent in the lake as benthos and standard bathymetrie procedures were undertaken to estimate the standing crop biomass of the larvae in Murchison Bay. Povilla was principally a boring invertebrate preferring dried logs (113 g Povilla nymphs per kg of host plant material). Cyperus papyrus carried 5 g C. denudalas 2.5 g and Phragmites mauritanus 1.0 g of Povilla per kg of host plant material. Povilla also occurred in the benthos at 40 g/m2. The Chironomidae and Chaoboridae had a mean standing crop biomass of 80 g/m2 and 3 g/m2 respectively. Their total biomass for the bay was estimated at 16060 metric tonnes for the Chironomidae, 7920 m. t. for Povilla and 660 m. t. for the Chaoborids. Adult swarming habits of the lakefly were closely correlated with lunar phases and the adults were easily trapped at night using kerosene lamps. Biochemical tests of the nutrient value of lakefly showed high levels of protein content (62%), minerals (18%), a low fat content (3.9%) and low moisture content (9%). This makes the lakefly ideal as an additive in animal feeds and growth experiments with poultry and aquaculture fish are currently going on to test the suitability of lakefly as an ingredient in animal feeds.

Eight potato cultivars namely Anett, Desiree, Feldeslohn, Kerr's Pink, Kenya Baraka, Roslin Eburu, Roslin Gucha and Roslin Tana were tested in the greenhouse to compare their susceptibility to Myzus persicae Sulzer. Differences in the susceptibility of the potato cultivars to aphids were reflected in the number of the apterae aphids that developed on them. Anett, Kerr's Pink and Feldeslohn supported the highest, and Roslin Tana the lowest population of M. persicae. Roslin Tana was found to be resistant. The bottom leaves of most potato cultivars maintained the highest aphid population while the upper leaves maintained the lowest. There were no significant correlations between leaf area and yield of potatoes with the number of apterae aphids on the eight potato cultivars.

On the island of Madagascar and five neighbouring islands: Aldabra, the Comoros, Mauritius, Réunion and the Seychelles, the number of hitherto found Ptyctima species is 57, including 37 Phthiracaroidea (of which ten are new to science), 18 Euphthiracaroidea (one new to science) and two Mesoplophoroidea. Of those 57 species, 30 are endemic (53%), ten Ethiopian species (17%), 12 pantropical species (21%) three oriental (5%) and two semicosmopolitan (3%). Endemism of Phthiracaroidea (62%) is similar to Euphthiracaroidea (59%). Similarity between the ptyctimous fauna of Madagascar and the neighbouring islands is very small—only one or two species are common. Moreover, the fauna of Mauritius is completely different from that of Madagascar. The ptyctimous fauna of Madagascar and the near islands must have been shaped before separation of Madagascar from Africa, which is suggested by the presence of the phylogenetically oldest and the youngest genera of Phthiracaroidea and Euphthiracaroidea. On the other hand, a large number of species of late derived genera Notophthiracarus and Hoplophorella may indicate a relatively late colonization of the islands by Phthiracaroidea. Dispersion of Ptyctima onto Madagascar and the neighbouring islands took place from the east—the Oriental region or from the south—the Australian region.

In the tropics, insect pests cause considerable damage to soybean, Glycine max and mungbean, Vigna radiata from germination until harvest and even in storage. Agromyzid flies in the seedling stage, lepidopterous and coleopterous defoliators in the vegetative and early reproductive stages, pentatomid and coreid bugs and lepidopterous pod-borers in the reproductive stage, and bruchids in storage all cause significant damage. Sources of resistance to agromyzids in mungbean (AVRDC accession V 4281), defoliators (PI 171451, PI 227687, PI 229358) and stink bugs (PI 227687 and PI 171444) in soybean, and bruchids in mungbean (V 2164) are available. In most cases, antibiosis appears to be the major mechanism of resistance. These sources are being exploited in the development of agromyzid-resistant mungbean, defoliator- and stink bug-resistant soybean, and bruchid-resistant mungbean at the Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center (AVRDC). Diversity in insect species within a pest complex and, in certain cases, biotypes of single pest at different locations as well as pest ecology are likely to influence the resistance reaction and, in practical terms, the utilization of pest resistance as a tool in the management of insect pests of soybean and mungbean. Greater efforts are required at local level to fully utilize insect pest resistant germplasm.

The effects of sowing date, host plant and insecticidal control of the stemborer Busseola fusca Fuller were studied in the highlands of Eritrea at Halhal Begos in 2003–2005. Sowing date had a significant effect on stemborer incidence and damage levels. Early sowing dates (April 1 and 15) had significantly lower numbers of larvae, percent infestation and deadhearts, and produced higher yields compared with later sowing dates. In the host preference experiment, Sudangrass (Sorghum× drummondii (Steud.) Millsp. & Chase) had the highest infestation (91%), and it was the most preferred host for oviposition among the tested plants. All the chemical treatments significantly reduced stemborer infestation and damage levels compared with untreated plots. Furadan and Cymbush significantly lowered infestation and larval damage. There were significant differences in days to heading, maturity, plant height and yield. In general, the study showed that early planting coupled with host preference and insecticides reduced the infestation of stemborers and significantly increased the yield of sorghum in the highlands of Eritrea.

Stemborers are a major constraint to the production of rice in the Kou Valley, Burkina Faso. Biological control is a good alternative to the use of agrochemicals that are harmful to human and animal health, and the environment. A survey of natural enemies of stemborers was conducted during the 2014 rice-cropping season across three transplanting periods (P1, P2 and P3). Plant and insect samples were collected by mowing and trapping at weekly intervals until harvest, starting 21 days after transplanting, and examined microscopically. Immature stages of the parasitized stemborers were reared to maturity for a positive identification of the parasitoids. Three genera of stemborers were identified: Chilo (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), Maliarpha (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and Sesamia (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). The Chilo genus was the most important with an average percentage of 41.4% of the pre-imaginal population in P2 followed by Marliarpha (1.1%) and Sesamia (0%). A total of 15 hymenopteran parasitoid species that included nine genera and seven families were identified. All the parasitoids were associated with Chilo and only two of the species parasitized Maliarpha. The most frequent parasitoids encountered were Bracon testacerofatus, Goniozus indicus, Dolichogenidea oryzae and Bracon spp. A total of 28 predator species were recorded from 22 genera, 6 orders and 15 families. Leucauge sp., Agriocnemis sp., Lycosa pseudoannulata and Lycosa sp. were the most important predators with frequencies reaching 15% of the arthropods caught in some fields. These results will be employed to develop a sustainable system to manage rice stemborers.

The pathology of the nuclear polyhedrosis virus from Spodoptera littoralis against Kalotermes flavicollis was confirmed under light microscope. Sections of infected termites showed a comprehensive viral infection. Nuclei of cells of the foregut, cardiac valve, pyloric valve, hindgut, gut musculature, fat body, nerve tissue, muscle, oviduct, pedicel of he ovariole, calyx, accessory glands, wing buds in termite reproductive nymphs, and to a lesser degree, the tracheal matrix, malpighian tubules and hypodermis, were susceptible to the virus. Infection to midgut was generally limited. However, when the termites were heavily infected, the midgut epithelial cells sloughed off into the lumen, and became hypertrophied and granular.

Chromosomal inversion polymorphism was investigated in samples of Anopheles gambiae sensu lato collected from different localities of Tanzania. An. merus was found monomorphic, while two widespread inversion polymorphisms were recorded in both An. gambiae sensu stricto (2Rb/+ and 2La/+) and An. arabiensis (2Rb/+ and 3Ra/+). Two additional polymorphic inversions (2 Rbr and 2Rq), generally associated, were observed in An. arabiensis from the Rift Valley. Observed karyotype frequencies were in agreement with those expected according to the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium suggesting conditions of panmixia in both An. gambiae s.s. and An. arabiensis in the studied areas.

Population of Spodoptera litura F. were monitored through pheromone-baited traps during the rainy season 1988 and 1989 in groundnut fields in relation to oviposition on leaves. Four peaks of adult catches were recorded. First and second peaks were smaller and caused no threat to crop. Third peak was observed at the pegging and pod-initiation stage during first week of September and coincided with the greatest oviposition on leaves. The fourth peak was greatest and occurred between 40th and 43rd standard week. However, no oviposition was recorded on groundnut during this period. The moths possibly dispersed and/or migrated to other areas with crops at an appropriate stage of susceptibility.

An artificial diet was developed for mass rearing of the spotted bollworm Earias vittella (Fabricius) in environmentally controlled conditions (27±1°C, 65±5% R. H. and 16:8 h scoto/photophase). The ingredients for 1 l of diet consisted of soybean (Glycine max) flour (60.0 g), chickpea (Cicer arietinum var. kabuli) flour (58.0 g), wheatgerm (16.0 g), dried yeast powder (16.0 g), casein (8.0 g), l-ascorbic acid (2.4 g), cholesterol (0.4 g), methyl-p-hydroxybenzoate (0.4 g), sorbic acid (2.4 g), streptomycin sulphate (0.4 g), agar–agar (16.0 g) and distilled water (820 ml). The artificial diet developed showed a higher development index (3.58) and a higher survival rate (83.4%) compared to the most preferred natural food (okra pods), for which these parameters were 3.09 and 65.0%, respectively. All the ingredients of the diet are easily available and inexpensive. The cost of 1 l of the diet, on which 400 larvae can be reared, is approximately US$ 2.00.

The effects of six constant temperatures ranging from 15 to 40°C on the rate of development, progeny production, sex ratio and adult longevity of the grape mealybug parasitoid, Anagyrus dactylopii (How.) were determined. It was found to complete the development in the temperature regimes of20–35°C but neither sex emerged as adults at 15 and 40°C. Developmental time of male and female decreased from 32.75 to 10 days, and from 34.50 to 11.75 days respectively, as the temperature increased from 20–35°C. Progeny production increased with the rise in temperature up to 30°C, and a maximum of 182 offspring emerged at 30°C. Sex ratio was altered considerably by different temperatures. Maximum female progeny was also obtained at 30°. Adult longevity of both sexes declined with increasing temperature. Mean longevity of male reduced from 2730 days at 15°C to 2.75 days at 40°C. The findings on the effects of temperature in relation to the rearing in the laboratory and the activity of Anagyrus dactylopii in the field are also discussed.
