Agricultural research in the 21st century has become a collaborative effort. Research on crop pests like Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), commonly known as the fall armyworm (FAW), can involve international collaboration because it is a pest not only in the southern United States, but also in Latin and South America. Our interest to study the genetic variation of 24 subpopulations of FAW from the southern United States, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Brazil and Argentina required insect collection procedures that preserve the integrity of DNA for molecular genetic analysis. The samples were collected primarily from maize (Zea mays L.), but also included outliers collected from pigweed (Amaranthus sp.), Royal Paulownia (Paulownia tomentosa (Thunb.) Sieb. and Zucc. ex Steud.), lemon tree (Citrus limon (L.) Burm) and Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.). A common insect preservation technique is to place individual insects in 95% ethanol (ETOH). However, various regulations for shipping and the size of this insect often prevent large sample sizes stored in ETOH from being imported. Genomic DNA from samples preserved in 95% ETOH, lyophilized and fresh insects was extracted and evaluated using DNA quantification and polymerase chain reaction–amplified fragment length polymorphism (PCR–AFLP). All three treatments yielded high-quality/high molecular weight (c. 70–150 μg) DNA. No differences in quality of genomic DNA for AFLP analysis were observed. Lyophilization is a reliable tool to preserve FAW samples, which yields high-quality DNA for use in AFLP genetic analysis.

Studies on the vertical distribution of phlebotomine sandflies were carried out at Marigat (Kenya) at determined heights above ground level in both wooded and open fields. Traps set up at different heights from 0–11 m (in wooded area) and 0–9 m (in open field), showed a clear vertical zonation of sandflies as large numbers were collected between 0–7 m in the first site and 0–4 m in the second ones. Among the nine sandfly species collected, Sergentomyia bedfordi Newstead and S. antennatus Newstead were the only species recorded at a height of 11 m above the ground and the commonest sandflies at all studied heights. Overall, more sandflies were collected from the wooded area than the open field. The relationships between the sandfly relative abundance and their heights of flight above the ground showed significant negative correlation coefficients.

The effect of 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 adult Sitophilus zeamais on the quality of 1 kg lots of white maize maintained at 25−30°C and 65−85% r.h. was observed. Per cent moisture, oil, Free Fatty Acid (FFA) content and germination were determined at 2-week intervals for 10 weeks.

Moisture content of infested maize ranged from 11.51 to 12.92%. There was a significant correlation between moisture content and degree of infestation (r = 0.88; P < 0.05; Y = 11.908 + 0.006 x). The range of oil content of infested maize was 4.83−5.75%. There was a significant correlation between oil content and degree of infestation (r = −0.097; P < 0.05; Y = 5.08 −0.0076 x). The free fatty acid (FFA) of infested maize was 5.82−6.86%. The heterogeneity at various infestation levels was significant (F = 81.38; d.f. = 5; P < 0.001). There was an increase in FFA, with increasing infestations, although the correlation was not significant.

The germination of maize, 10 days after planting, at various infestation levels was 43.0−97.5%. There was a decrease in germination, as level of infestation increased. The heterogeneity in germination at various infestation levels was significant (F = 19.21; d.f. = 5; P < 0.001). Possible reasons for the results obtained, are presented.

On exposure of maize grains mixed with groundnut oil at a dose of 20 ml/kg, 100% mortality of the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.) was observed within 24 hr and 100% at 10 and 5 ml/kg in 2 and 3 days.

Egg-laying and progeny development in the rice weevils were completely prevented at groundnut oil doses other than 1 ml/kg at which the number of eggs laid and progeny developed were 27 and 38% of those in the oil-free control during the same period. When maize treated with oil at 10–20 ml/kg was reinfested after 19 weeks with fresh adult rice weevils, less than 42% of them had died. The total number of progeny that emerged on week 23 from the two higher doses of oil was 38% of that emerging from the control.

Groudnut oil does not affect the viability of maize grains and damage after 25 weeks. Viability of maize grains was only 6–13% after oil treatment at 10–20 ml/kg compared to 100% in the untreated control.

The effect of pod angle on the resistance of cowpea, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. to the legume pod borer, Maruca testulalis Geyer, was investigated under field conditions at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, Nigeria, using two cowpea cultivars: IT82D-716 (susceptible to borer damage) and TVu 946 (resistant to borer damage). Three different pod angles were used In the study — a normal angle, a decreased angle and an increased angle. Negative and highly significant (P < 0.01) relationships were found between pod angle and per cent pod damage, as well as the seed damage Index In the two cowpea cultivars. Pods with wide angles (≥ 89°) were damaged on only one and rarely on both pods. Apart from biochemical and other bio-physical factors, selection and breeding for wide pod angle is suggested as a strategy for reducing M. testulalis damage to cowpea pods.

Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is an indigenous, gregarious, larval endo/parasitoid which is widely distributed in Africa and attacks mid- to late instars of stemborers. There is renewed interest in using Co. sesamiae for biological control to reduce the problems caused by stemborers. However, Wolbachia sp., a bacterial symbiont of some populations of Co. sesamiae, poses some threat to the successful use of the parasitoid for stemborer control. This bacterium's common effect is cytoplasmic incompatibility between infected males and uninfected females. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests were carried out on parasitoid samples collected from 5 locations in Kenya and 8 other countries in eastern Africa. Wolbachia presence was detected in Co. sesamiae populations from Coast and Machakos in Kenya, and from samples collected from 6 other eastern and southern African countries. No infection was detected from western Kenya, Uganda and Malawi. Cross mating among 3 infected populations (North Coast, South Coast and Machakos) and 2 uninfected populations (Kitale and Kuja) was done to establish which populations were reproductively compatible. Biological parameters, such as brood size and percent females were compared among the different crosses. One-way incompatibility, indicative of Wolbachia infection, was observed from the crosses between males of either Mombasa or Machakos arid females from Kitale. Selection of compatible Co. sesamiae populations is critical to successful augmentation biological control programmes.

The influence of gibberellic acid (GA3), a plant growth regulator (PGR), on the protein, total lipid, total carbohydrate, glycogen and trehalose contents of the banana fruit fly, Zaprionus paravittiger (Godbole and Vaidya) (Diptera: Drosophilidae), was investigated by feeding 63-h-old larvae on artificial diet containing 1000, 2000 and 4000 ppm GA3 for 30 and 50 h. The maximum increase in the protein content was recorded for the 1000 ppm GA3 treatment. Significant decreases in the total lipid and total carbohydrate contents were recorded at 1000 and 2000 ppm while the 4000 ppm treatment significantly increased their levels. Glycogen content was significantly decreased by all the tested GA3 concentrations. The possible reasons for the observed changes in these biochemical components are discussed.

The very tiny eggs of Daraba laisalis are often laid hidden between the body of egg fruits and its persistent sepals. After 4–5 days nearly all eggs hatch. The first instar caterpillar enters an egg fruit within 30 min of hatching, spends 8–15 days within it at a temperature of 24–32°C and r.h. 73–96%; it comes out a much bigger caterpillar to pupate in any convenient but hidden place near the egg fruit. The development of larva and pupa to adult and the morphology of the first and last instar larvae, the pupa and the adult are described. Behavioural peculiarities, longevity and predators of larvae are also mentioned.

Effect of heating on Callosobruchus maculatus (Fabricius) in Vigna angularis (Willd.), Ohwi & Ohashi, seed was assessed using an 118° obtuse base angle solar box heater. The box heater was constructed with 1.2 mm thick sheet metal, glued inside with aluminium foil and insulated on the outside by fixing 1 cm thick polystyrene and glazed with 0.15 mm thick clear plastic sheet. Electric energy from a solar simulator panel adjusted to simulate heat trapped from natural solar energy was used. Exposure of the various developmental stages of C. maculatus infesting adzuki bean seed to heat for 45 min and more raised the temperature between and within the seeds well in excess of the lethal level (>60 °C) and resulted in complete control. Heating at 60°C of up to 3 cm adzuki bean seed (seven to eight seed layers) took about 1 h and resulted in complete control of the pest. This would enable this heater to treat large amounts of seed at a time compared with solar heaters demonstrated so far in which only a single layer of seed can be treated. Therefore, solar heating of infested adzuki bean seeds using the aforementioned box heater around noon, for 1 h, gives effective control of C. maculatus. Results of the effect of heat treatment on seed viability and moisture content showed that adzuki bean seed germination is affected by heating; hence seed meant for planting should not be heat treated to control storage insect pests. Heat treatment also did not affect seed moisture content.

A study was conducted in Muswishi area, Zambia, with the objective of assessing indigenous technical knowledge (ITK) and relating this knowledge to integrated pest management (IPM) in maize production. The methods used included surveys, participatory rural appraisal (PRA), transect walks and semi-structured interviews (SSI). It was found that ITK does exist among some Muswishi smallholder farmers. Eighty-nine percent of respondent farmers never used any chemical pesticides. However, 22% used natural products to manage insect pests. The most widely used natural plant products were Swartzia madascariensis Desv, Tephrosia vogelli Hook.f, Euphorbia tirucalli L, wood ash and cow dung. Farmer's own assessment indicated that the integration of ITK into IPM technology led to increased maize yields (> 37.5%). This study demonstrated the continuing need for integrating ITK into IPM technology. Such an approach could ensure household food security and enhance sustainable livelihoods of rural smallholder farmers.

Stemborers are a major constraint to the production of rice in the Kou Valley, Burkina Faso. Biological control is a good alternative to the use of agrochemicals that are harmful to human and animal health, and the environment. A survey of natural enemies of stemborers was conducted during the 2014 rice-cropping season across three transplanting periods (P1, P2 and P3). Plant and insect samples were collected by mowing and trapping at weekly intervals until harvest, starting 21 days after transplanting, and examined microscopically. Immature stages of the parasitized stemborers were reared to maturity for a positive identification of the parasitoids. Three genera of stemborers were identified: Chilo (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), Maliarpha (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and Sesamia (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). The Chilo genus was the most important with an average percentage of 41.4% of the pre-imaginal population in P2 followed by Marliarpha (1.1%) and Sesamia (0%). A total of 15 hymenopteran parasitoid species that included nine genera and seven families were identified. All the parasitoids were associated with Chilo and only two of the species parasitized Maliarpha. The most frequent parasitoids encountered were Bracon testacerofatus, Goniozus indicus, Dolichogenidea oryzae and Bracon spp. A total of 28 predator species were recorded from 22 genera, 6 orders and 15 families. Leucauge sp., Agriocnemis sp., Lycosa pseudoannulata and Lycosa sp. were the most important predators with frequencies reaching 15% of the arthropods caught in some fields. These results will be employed to develop a sustainable system to manage rice stemborers.

The effects of four different neem formulations (Neemros®, Neemroc EC®, Neemroc Combi and Saroneem) and a combination of Neemros® with a synthetic acaricide (Mitac®) on the twospotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch) were compared with Mitac® on tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) leaf discs in the laboratory, The following LC50 were determined: Neemroc EC® 12.9 ml/1, Saroneem 5.8 ml/1, Neemroc Combi 1.0 ml/1 and Mitac® + Neemros® 1 ml/1 + 17.6 g/1. No LC50 was determined for Neemros® since the highest mortality observed was 11.4 %. The combination of Mitac® and Neemros® resulted in the highest mortality after 24 hours (83.3 %), followed by Neemroc EC® (78.3 %), Saroneem (53.4 %), Mitac® (50.8 %), Neemroc Combi (38.9 %), the control (4.5 %) and Neemros® (0.0 %). All neem formulations also caused repellence and oviposition deterrence in T. urticae.

The life patterns of cassava green spider mite populations were compared using characteristics of spinning behaviour and other associated biological parameters so as to determine the possibility of using these criteria for separating closely related forms or populations of Mononychellus complex of species. These included web structure and density, preferred site for oviposition, feeding, walking, defecation, quiescence, spinning behaviour during walking and type of egg cover. Of these, preferred site for feeding, walking, quiescence and spinning behaviour during walking were found to be consistent and could possibly be used in comparative studies on different mite populations. The surface structure of the leaves i.e. pubescence, and mite population density were found to affect some of the behaviour patterns. Detailed studies on the influence of other factors, such as host plant variety, stage of plant growth, age of leaf colonized, weather, etc. will be necessary to determine the usefulness of these biological criteria in separating sympatric and allopatric populations of the mite.

Chromosomal inversion polymorphism was investigated in samples of Anopheles gambiae sensu lato collected from different localities of Tanzania. An. merus was found monomorphic, while two widespread inversion polymorphisms were recorded in both An. gambiae sensu stricto (2Rb/+ and 2La/+) and An. arabiensis (2Rb/+ and 3Ra/+). Two additional polymorphic inversions (2 Rbr and 2Rq), generally associated, were observed in An. arabiensis from the Rift Valley. Observed karyotype frequencies were in agreement with those expected according to the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium suggesting conditions of panmixia in both An. gambiae s.s. and An. arabiensis in the studied areas.

Factors contributing to host plant resistance in sorghum to Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) were studied. Oviposition on the plants in the field started 3 weeks after germination and peaked 2–6 weeks later. Egg batches (96.1%) were laid on the leaf blades compared with 3.9% on the leaf sheaths. On the leaf blades, significantly more egg batches were laid on the upper (57.2%) than on the lower leaf surfaces. In young plants, leaves attached to the upper and lower segments were preferred for oviposition, while leaves in the upper segments more or less maintained their share of egg batches over time; there was a shift from the leaves in the lower to those in the middle segments with the plant age. Differences among sorghum lines for oviposition were significant and these lines were divided into three categories based on their levels of oviposition.

Sorghum plants reacted to insect feeding in the stem by production of a red staining compound which did not significantly affect the development of the insect. Four damage symptoms were observed and these were related to different plant ages. Plants compensated damage by the production of extra tillers, some of which produced panicles that were ready by approximately the time of harvest. Plants infested 2 weeks after germination produced maximum tillers and juvenile panicles; and also had the least effective tillers, plant heights and grain yields. Grain yields were depressed in the infested plants for the cultivars tested, except in LC 119/80–3 where there were actual grain yield gains.

Leaf-feeding and ‘dead heart’ scores, which were related to reduced plant heights and yields in some of the cultivars tested, are proposed as rational indices for susceptibility ratings and monitoring of crop losses.

The biological effects of six insect growth regulators (IGRs) AI3-37634-c, AI3-36877-b, AI3-37603-b, AI3-36807-b, AI3-37837-a and AI3-36809-a against immature stages and adults of Aedes aegypti have been evaluated. According to IC50 values obtained (concentration to inhibit the emergence of 50% of adults), AI3-36809-a (0.02μg/ml) proved to be the most effective compound, followed by AI3-37603-b (0.04μg/ml), AI3-37837-a (0.11μg/ml), AI3-36807-b (0.17 μg/ml), AI3-37634-C (0.48 μg/ml) and AI3-36877-b (1.4 μg/ml), respectively. The results showed also that the duration of the fourth instar larvae of A. aegypti was prolonged when these larvae were exposed to the effective concentrations of the above compounds.

Apart from delayed lethal action, possible effect of the compounds tested on the basal follicle numbers developed by females of A. aegypti which survived after larval treatment with IC50 of the above-mentioned compounds has been considered. Generally, the results indicate that the females treated have more follicles than the untreated ones of similar age and grown under identical conditions.

At room temperature (diurnal range 23–28°C), Sarcophaga haemorrhoidalis (Fallen) developed from egg to adult in approx. 32 days. Survival ( ± SE%) was generally high (76.63 ± 5.67 for the egg, 80.69 ± 3.20 for the larval and 89.83 ± 3.80 for the pupal stages). Adults emerged over a 4-day period between 07.00 and 13.00 hr local time, with daily peak emergence occurring between 07.00 and 10.00 hr. Their immediate post-emergence period was characterized by a highly active and mobile phase lasting 10–15 min followed by an immobile phase lasting about 1.5 hr. Copulation commenced 4.35 ± 0.43 days after adults emerged and was not preceded by elaborate courtship. After a pre-oviposition period of 12.96 ± 0.47 days, females deposited eggs in batches (1.57 ± 0.23 egg-batches/female) each containing a mean of about 37 ± 4 eggs. Fecundity was 52 ± 6 eggs/female during a mean adult life span of 18.68 ± 1.76 days. Although the foregoing life history parameters are strongly suggestive of K-selected ecological strategy, S. haemorrhoidalis may in fact be adopting an opportunistic r−selected ecological strategy since it habitually breeds in unstable environments.

Commercial Bacillus thuringiensis (B.t.) Berliner products, namely Delfin®, Agree®, Halt® and Spicturin® were evaluated in the laboratory and on an intensively managed teak plantation for the control of the teak defoliator, Hyblaea puera Cramer (Lepidoptera: Hyblaeidae). A 2 g/litre concentration showed highly significant lethality against defoliator larvae, the early instars being more susceptible (99.8% mortality) than late ones (63.6–81.2% mortality). The order of effectiveness was Delfin = Agree > Halt > Spicturin. At 2 g/litre the B. t. preparations were as effective as at 0.07% (2 ml/litre) monocrotophos 36% when sprayed on one-year-old saplings in a plantation. However, at 1 g /litre concentration, monocrotophos 0.07% was superior to the B. t. products.

Bruchidius atrolineatus appears at the end of the rainy season when pods of its host plant Vigna unguiculata begin to mature. The eggs are deposited along the ventral suture of pods in the vicinity of the seeds. When the eggs are not attacked by Trichogrammatidae their larvae penetrate the seeds and mortality is low during the post-embryonic development. Most of the adults emerging at pod maturity have functional reproductive organs. In that case the females laid on the same mature pods and larvae develop inside the seeds during the first part of the drying season characterised by high diurnal temperature and low relative humity. If the first emerged adults have functional reproductive organs, the following (60% of the population) are in reproductive diapause. Such diapausing insects have been found during the dry season in shelters near the cultivated fields of Vigna unguiculata. Induction or termination of this reproductive diapause are not yet studied. This diapause probably allows the maintenance of populations during the dry season in absence of host plant.

The demographic statistics of the ladybird Exochomus flaviventris Mader (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) were investigated under laboratory conditions on the cassava mealybug, Phenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae), reared on four host plants with different levels of antibiotic resistance to the mealybug: two cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz, Euphorbiaceae) varieties, Incoza and Zanaga, Faux-Caoutchouc (FC) (hybrid of M. esculenta × M. glaziovii Muel. Arg.) and water weed (Talinum triangulare Jack, Portulacacae). Preimaginal mortality, mean oviposition time and total fecundity of female ladybirds were strongly affected by the host plant even though there was no linkage with antibiotic resistance. The net reproduction rates R0 of the predator were 1.5,1.7 and 2.4 times higher on Zanaga than on water weed, Incoza and FC respectively, and the generation time (T) was significantly longer on Zanaga than on the other three plants. The intrinsic rate of increase rm was not modified by the antibiotic resistance of the host plants. With the two cassava varieties, Incoza and Zanaga, it was found that antibiosis significantly affected the life history parameters of the ladybird without modifying its fitness, and provided better cassava mealybug control.
