We prove some numerical inequality for the Horikawa indices for Eisenbud–Harris special nonhyperelliptic fibrations of genus 4 on algebraic surfaces under the assumption that the multiplication map of the fibration is not surjective. Furthermore, we prove that the inequality is best possible by constructing the examples satisfying the equality.

In this note we consider the problem of determining the stress on the boundary y = 0 of the elastic half-plane y ≡ 0 when there are prescribed body forces acting in the interior and the boundary is free from applied stress. Expressions for the components of stress at a general point of the half-plane when the imposed body force is concentrated at a single point have been derived by Melan [1], Sneddon [2] and Green [3], each author making use of a different method.

Recently M. Martelli [6] and M. Furi and M. P. Pera [1] proved some interesting results about the existence and the global topological structure of connected sets of solutions to problems of the form:

with L:E → F a bounded linear Fredholm operator of index zero (where E, F are real Banach spaces), and N:ℝ × E → F a nonlinear map satisfying suitable conditions.

While the existence of solution sets for this kind of problem follows from the Leray–Schauder continuation principle, it is our aim to show in this note that their global topological structure can be obtained as a consequence of the theory developed by J. Ize, I. Massabò, J. Pejsachowicz and A. Vignoli in [3, 4] about parameter dependent compact vector fields in Banach spaces.

If the injective hull E = E(RR) of a ring R is a rational extension of RR, then E has a unique structure as a ring whose multiplication is compatible with R-module multiplication. We give some known examples where such a compatible ring structure exists when E is a not a rational extension of RR, and other examples where such a compatible ring structure on E cannot exist. With insights gleaned from these examples, we study compatible ring structures on E, especially in the case when ER, and hence RR ⊆ ER, has finite length. We show that for RR and ER of finite length, if ER has a ring structure compatible with R-module multiplication, then E is a quasi-Frobenius ring under that ring structure and any two compatible ring structures on E have left regular representations conjugate in Λ = EndR(ER), so the ring structure is unique up to isomorphism. We also show that if ER is of finite length, then ER has a ring structure compatible with its R-module structure and this ring structure is unique as a set of left multiplications if and only if ER is a rational extension of RR.

For a group H and a subset X of H, we let HX denote the set {hxh−1 | h ∈ H, x ∈ X}, and when X is a free-generating set of H, we say that the set HX is a Whitehead subset of H. For a group F and an element r of F, we say that r is Cohen–Lyndon aspherical in F if F{r} is a Whitehead subset of the subgroup of F that is generated by F{r}. In 1963, Cohen and Lyndon (D. E. Cohen and R. C. Lyndon, Free bases for normal subgroups of free groups, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 108 (1963), 526–537) independently showed that in each free group each non-trivial element is Cohen–Lyndon aspherical. Their proof used the celebrated induction method devised by Magnus in 1930 to study one-relator groups. In 1987, Edjvet and Howie (M. Edjvet and J. Howie, A Cohen–Lyndon theorem for free products of locally indicable groups, J. Pure Appl. Algebra45 (1987), 41–44) showed that if A and B are locally indicable groups, then each cyclically reduced element of A*B that does not lie in A ∪ B is Cohen–Lyndon aspherical in A*B. Their proof used the original Cohen–Lyndon theorem. Using Bass–Serre theory, the original Cohen–Lyndon theorem and the Edjvet–Howie theorem, one can deduce the local-indicability Cohen–Lyndon theorem: if F is a locally indicable group and T is an F-tree with trivial edge stabilisers, then each element of F that fixes no vertex of T is Cohen–Lyndon aspherical in F. Conversely, by Bass–Serre theory, the original Cohen–Lyndon theorem and the Edjvet–Howie theorem are immediate consequences of the local-indicability Cohen–Lyndon theorem. In this paper we give a detailed review of a Bass–Serre theoretical form of Howie induction and arrange the arguments of Edjvet and Howie into a Howie-inductive proof of the local-indicability Cohen–Lyndon theorem that uses neither Magnus induction nor the original Cohen–Lyndon theorem. We conclude with a review of some standard applications of Cohen–Lyndon asphericity.

Let F be a field of characteristic p ≠ 2 and G a group without 2-elements having an involution ∗. Extend the involution linearly to the group ring FG, and let (FG)− denote the set of skew elements with respect to ∗. In this paper, we show that if G is finite and (FG)− is Lie metabelian, then G is nilpotent. Based on this result, we deduce that if G is torsion, p > 7 and (FG)− is Lie metabelian, then G must be abelian. Exceptions are constructed for smaller values of p.

In this paper, we characterize surjective isometries on certain classes of noncommutative spaces associated with semi-finite von Neumann algebras: the Lorentz spaces $L^{w,1}$ , as well as the spaces $L^1+L^\infty$ and $L^1\cap L^\infty$ . The technique used in all three cases relies on characterizations of the extreme points of the unit balls of these spaces. Of particular interest is that the representations of isometries obtained in this paper are global representations.

We continue our investigation of the real space H of Hermitian matrices in $${M_n}(\mathbb{C})$$ with respect to norms on $${\mathbb{C}^n}$$. We complete the commutative case by showing that any proper real subspace of the real diagonal matrices on $${\mathbb{C}^n}$$ can appear as H. For the non-commutative case, we give a complete solution when n=3 and we provide various illustrative examples for n ≥ 4. We end with a short list of problems.

We prove that the lower radical, determined by a set of rings, is strong if and only if it is the lower radical determined by a ring with zero multiplication.

Let ξ be a stably fibre homotopic trivial vector bundle. A classical result of Thorn states that the Stiefel-Whitney classes of ξ vanish, and one way to prove this is as follows. Let u be the Thorn class of ξ in mod 2 cohomology. Then u is stably spherical by [2] and therefore all stable cohomology operations vanish on u, showing that wi(ξ)u = Sqiu = 0. In this note we shall apply this same method using complex cobordism and Landweber-Novikov operations to study relations among Chern classes of a stably fibre homotopic trivial complex vector bundle. We will thus obtain in a unified way certain strong mod p conditions for every prime p.

Two of the main objects of study in multifractal analysis of measures are the coarse multifractal spectra and the Rényi dimensions. In the 1980s it was conjectured in the physics literature that for ‘good’ measures the following result, relating the coarse multifractal spectra to the Legendre transform of the Rényi dimensions, holds, namely This result is known as the multifractal formalism and has now been verified for many classes of measures exhibiting some degree of self-similarity. However, it is also well known that there is an abundance of measures not satisfying the multifractal formalism and that, in general, the Legendre transforms of the Rényi dimensions provide only upper bounds for the coarse multifractal spectra. The purpose of this paper is to prove that even though the multifractal formalism fails in general, it is nevertheless true that all measures (satisfying a mild regularity condition) satisfy the inverse of the multifractal formalism, namely

On the setting of the unit ball of the complex n-space, some characterizations of M-harmonic Bloch functions are obtained. As an application, Carleson measures are characterized by means of Berezin type integrals of M-harmonic Bloch functions. As one may expect, these results carry over to M-harmonic little Bloch functions and vanishing Carleson measures.

Let $J_\mu$ denote the Bessel function of order $\mu$. The functions $x^{-\alpha-1} J_{\alpha+2n+1}(x), n=0,1,2,\ldots,$ form an orthogonal system in the space $L^2((0,\infty), x^{2\alpha+1}dx)$ when $\alpha >{-}1$. In this paper we prove that the Fourier series associated to this system is of restricted weak type for the endpoints of the interval of mean convergence, while it is not of weak type if $\alpha\,{\ge}\,0$.

C. Eberhart and W. Williams [3] showed that the least inverse semigroup congruence , on an orthodox semigroup S, plays a very important role in determining the structure of the lattice of congruences on S. In this note we show that their results can be applied to give an explicit construction for the idempotent separating congruences on S in terms of idempotent separating congruences on S/.

We show that over every countable algebraically closed field $\mathbb{K}$ there exists a finitely generated $\mathbb{K}$-algebra that is Jacobson radical, infinite-dimensional, generated by two elements, graded and has quadratic growth. We also propose a way of constructing examples of algebras with quadratic growth that satisfy special types of relations.

Noetherian dimer algebras form a prominent class of examples of noncommutative crepant resolutions (NCCRs). However, dimer algebras that are noetherian are quite rare, and we consider the question: how close are nonnoetherian homotopy dimer algebras to being NCCRs? To address this question, we introduce a generalization of NCCRs to nonnoetherian tiled matrix rings. We show that if a noetherian dimer algebra is obtained from a nonnoetherian homotopy dimer algebra A by contracting each arrow whose head has indegree 1, then A is a noncommutative desingularization of its nonnoetherian centre. Furthermore, if any two arrows whose tails have indegree 1 are coprime, then A is a nonnoetherian NCCR.

We classify embeddings of the finite groups $A_4$ , $S_4$ and $A_5$ in the Lie group $G_2(\mathbb C)$ up to conjugation.

The norm K(G) of a group G is the subgroup of elements of G which normalize every subgroup of G. Under the name kern this subgroup was introduced by Baer [1]. The norm is Dedekindian in the sense that all its subgroups are normal. A theorem of Dedekind [5] describes the structure of such groups completely: if not abelian they are the direct product of a quaternion group of order eight and an abelian group with no element of order four. Baer [2] proves that a 2-group with non-abelian norm is equal to its norm.
