To evaluate the effects of defoliation on green forage performance and grain yield (GY) variation in barley, five barley genotypes were imposed on three levels of defoliation treatments over two consecutive growing seasons in this study. The results indicated that green forage yields were significantly improved by repeated defoliation. The traits of green forage quality, including the ratio of dry weight to fresh weight, crude ash and calcium content were improved, while crude protein and crude fat were reduced, and crude fiber and phosphorus contents appeared not to be influenced by repeated defoliation. Plant height (PH), GY and other yield components, grain number per spike and thousand kernel weight, were significantly reduced by defoliation over the two growing seasons, while internode length below spike was less affected. Reduction in spike length and the number of spikes per plant were identified in only one year. Correlation analysis revealed that only PH exhibited a positive correlation with GY. Effects of genotype, interaction between genotype and defoliation, and environments on changes of forage yield and quality and GY were also discussed. Our current work provides a feasible approach to select elite barley cultivars with optimal defoliation treatments for both forage and grain uses in barley breeding programme.

Deep sowing (15 cm) on sands in the dry season is a practice used in post-rice sowing of legumes without irrigation, designed to increase moisture access for germination, growth and crops yield. However, with such deep sowing there can be a penalty for emergence and growth if there is abundant water stored in the upper soil profile during the growing season. Hence, there is a need to define the soil water regimes under which deep sowing is advantageous for different legumes. To investigate the adaptation of legume crop species to deep sowing, we studied their emergence, growth and yield on three deep soils (3–16% clay) with shallow water tables during two years in northeast Thailand. At site 1 and 2, peanut, cowpea, mungbean and soybean were sown shallow (~5 cm) or deep (~15 cm). At site 3, only cowpea and peanut were shallow or deep sown. Shallow water tables maintained soil water content (0–15 cm) above permanent wilting point throughout the growing season. Deep sowing of all legumes delayed emergence by 3–7 days at all locations. Shoot dry weight of legumes after deep sowing was mostly similar or lower than weight after shallow sowing. Yield and harvest index of legumes did not differ meaningfully among sowing depths. Therefore, deep sowing was not beneficial for dry season cropping without irrigation when there was a shallow water table and sufficient water for crop growth throughout soil profiles in the growing season. Taken together with previous studies, we conclude that shallow rather than deep sowing of legumes was preferred when the soil water content at 0–15-cm depth remained higher than permanent wilting point throughout the growing season due to shallow water table.

Mixing species with different tillering peaks may enhance pasture stability, but intercropping may also alter the plants’ tillering patterns. This study aimed to evaluate tillering dynamics in black oat (Avena strigosa Schreb.) and annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) pastures grown as monocultures or intercropped. Three following treatments are established: black oat and annual ryegrass pastures grown as monocultures and an intercrop composed of these two species. Tillering dynamics were measured for black oat and annual ryegrass populations separately. When intercropped, tiller birth rates of black oat decreased (20.0 vs. 28.9 tillers 100 tillers−1) and those of annual ryegrass increased (30.5 vs. 14.3 tillers 100 tillers−1), compared to their monocultures. Tiller death rates for annual ryegrass did not differ between monoculture and intercropping (23.9 tillers 100 tillers−1), but black oat presented higher mortality in monocultures (48.8 vs. 36.4 tillers 100 tillers−1). The black oat monoculture had the lowest population stability index (0.80), whereas annual ryegrass in monoculture and intercropped pastures exhibited greater values (on average, 0.92). Our results indicated that black oat and annual ryegrass present distinct tillering dynamics whether grown as monoculture or intercropped, and suggest that intercropping species with elevated death rates (black oat) with later species (annual ryegrass) could be an important tool for maintaining pasture stability throughout the growing season.

Low-cost methods for enhancement of seed longevity may facilitate biodiversity conservation especially in resource constrained situations. Longevity of 13 cucurbitaceous seed lots belonging to 12 species with mean moisture contents 9.3±0.7% was studied in hermetic storage (HS) and in a liquid consisting of 20% (w/w) CaCl2 in glycerol, following seed to preservative ratio of 1:1 (v/v), at ambient temperature for 24 years. The liquid preservative (LP) was not absorbed by the seeds over the storage period and was harmless to them, drying seeds to about 5% of moisture and maintaining them at this state throughout the storage period. The seeds lost viability in HS in 3.8±0.4 years, while in LP viability was lost in 14–16 years in eight species and the seeds were still viable in five species after 24 years. LP-preserved seeds and also fresh seeds of three species were planted under field conditions. The results validated the use of LP in seed storage for 24 years. The liquid preservation extended longevity of the cucurbit seeds at ambient temperature by drying them and probably maintaining them in oxygen-free environment.

In order to identify the effect of burrowing nematodes on the shoots (pseudostem and leaves) of banana plants and to determine whether or not shoot characteristics are associated with plant resistance to nematodes two experiments were conducted in controlled conditions within polytunnels. The banana plants were harvested on three occasions for the measurement of root morphology and biomass. Varieties differed in their resistance to nematodes from resistant (Yg Km5, FHIA 17, FHIA 03) and partly resistant (FHIA 01, FHIA 25) to not resistant (FHIA 23, Williams). Nematodes reduced total plant dry weight at the first harvest in Experiment 1 and by an average of 8.8% in Experiment 2, but did not affect leaf area in either experiment. The ratio of above-ground weight to total plant weight was reduced from 75% to 72% in nematode-infected plants compared with the control plants for all varieties tested in Experiment 1, but was only reduced in FHIA 25 and FHIA 23 in Experiment 2. Varieties differed in above-ground growth. The FHIA varieties had greater shoot weights and leaf area than YgKm5 and Williams. Overall, resistance to nematodes was associated with the partitioning of a greater proportion of biomass to the roots than to above-ground parts

Potatoes are an important cash crop for small-scale producers worldwide. The move away from subsistence to commercialized farming, combined with the rapid growth in demand for processed agricultural products in developing countries, implies that small-scale farmers and researchers alike must begin to respond to these market changes and consider post-harvest treatment as a critical aspect of the potato farming system. This paper presents and assesses a low cost potato-grading machine that was designed explicitly to enable small-scale potato growers to sort tubers by size for supply to commercial processors. The results of ten experiments reveal that the machine achieves an accuracy of sort similar to commercially available graders. The machine, which uses parallel conical rollers, has the capacity to grade different tuber shapes and to adjust sorting classes, making it suitable for locations with high potato diversity. Its relatively low cost suggests that an improved and adapted version of this machine might enhance market integration of small-scale potato producers not only in Peru, but in other developing countries as well.

An experiment to investigate the effect of planting pattern, time of planting the cowpea, and insecticide application on the yield of intercropped cotton and cowpea showed that insecticide applied to the cotton controlled cowpea pests best when the crops were planted in alternating single rows. I n wet seasons, delayed planting of the cowpea reduced its yield but its performance was better in alternating single rows than in other planting patterns. In drier seasons, cowpea yield was unaffected by time of planting and yields were similar with alternating single or double rows. Cotton yield was reduced by 47% when the planting pattern was changed to a one cotton:two cowpea row configuration.

Legume agronomic research in Southern Africa has often focused on integrating legumes into smallholder cereal cropping systems, but there is limited information available on the feasibility and soil health implications of continuous cropping legumes in the region. Continuous legumes may be suitable in areas with large livestock populations where a premium is placed on high-quality forage, or where efforts are underway to reclaim degraded cropland. Our objectives in this study were to (i) evaluate the performance of diverse legumes under continuous cropping and conservation tillage management with no fertility inputs and (ii) assess the response of soil health parameters to continuous legumes in a semi-arid environment. A 4-year study was conducted in Limpopo, South Africa beginning in the 2011–2012 growing season in which 10 legume and fallow treatments were imposed in the same plots for 4 growing seasons. All legumes responded negatively in varying degrees to continuous cropping in terms of biomass and nutrient accumulation. Lablab (Lablab purpureus L.) was the top-performing legume in the study and accumulated 4.5–13 Mg ha−1 of biomass and 153–345, 11–34, and 75–286 kg ha−1 of N, P, and K, respectively. Lablab often outperformed natural fallow, while other legumes generally performed as well as or inferior to natural fallow, depending on species and growing season. Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata Walp) was especially incompatible with continuous cropping and averaged less than 252 kg ha−1 and 2.1 Mg ha−1 of grain and biomass, respectively, from 2012–2013 to 2014–2015. Continuous cropping did not lead to sustained improvements in soil health. By 2014–2015, soil organic matter for all treatments had either declined or resembled baseline values. Rates of potentially mineralizable N in cowpea, lablab, vining mucuna (Mucuna pruriens var. Utilis), natural fallow, and bare ground plots fell by 70–96% during the study. There was also evidence for lower recovery of leached K by legumes compared to natural fallow species. In conclusion, legumes, such as lablab, should be considered as continuous forages on marginal land in areas where high-quality forage is in demand, but continuous cropping legumes without fertility inputs are not an effective strategy for improving soil health on degraded cropland in this semi-arid region of Southern Africa. Future research efforts may focus on the grazing strategies and baling frequencies required to optimize annual biomass accumulation of continuous lablab to meet livestock demand and support smallholder livelihoods.

Pot experiments with Malaysian rice variety Reyong-20 showed that sea water supplied at a concentration of 3 per cent increased yields of both grain and straw; a 6 per cent solution increased straw but not grain yields; yields were depressed at 9 and 12 per cent but tolerance of higher concentrations of sea water increased with age of the plants.

The crude protein contents of four Nigerian edible leafy vegetables were high, with values ranging from ao to 30% on a dry weight basis and maximum yields of crude protein ranging from 428 to 602 kg/ha. The percentages of leaf protein extracted ranged from 41 to 70%, whilst the highest yields of extractable edible protein varied from 199 to 332 kg/ha. The crude protein levels, as well as yields of extractable proteins, were slightly affected by the season of growth, but greatly by the age and species of plants.
