Insect-proof net tunnels can help reduce virus infection of clean virus-tested sweetpotato seed produced by decentralized seed producers. However, optimal management is required to maintain both quality and quantity of seed produced. This study investigated the effect of the ratoon cropping technique on vine production in net tunnels and open fields. Virus-tested planting material of two varieties, Kabode and Mataya, were grown in net tunnels and open fields. Each variety had 80 plants per plot, with 40 following the ratooning technique and 40 a replanting technique. The ratooned crop was harvested six times, comprising the initial harvest and five regrowths. This covered 14 months representing six generations of vine production. The number of vines, number of nodes per vine, and vine length were recorded. The number of plants showing virus symptoms was also recorded. The ratoon cropping technique produced more vines compared with the replanting technique in both net tunnels and open fields. Cv. Kabode produced more vines in open fields compared with net tunnels regardless of cropping technique. On the other hand, cv. Mataya produced relatively equal numbers of vines in net tunnels and open fields. Despite ratooning leading to more vine production compared with replanting, the technique led to higher virus incidences on plants grown in the open. This also varied with variety with the highest virus disease incidences being recorded on cv. Mataya. We recommend the ratoon cropping technique for sweetpotato vine production in net tunnels. Replanting technique should be adopted for vine production in the open fields because it acts as a key control strategy for virus infections even for susceptible varieties.

While dairy production has the potential to diversify smallholder agriculture and increase incomes, there are multiple constraints. One is the consistent provision of quality feed. High protein, leguminous fodder shrubs – also referred to as Fodder Tree Technology (FTT) – can help address this constraint, yet adoption levels are generally low. Implemented in Kenya and Malawi, the Shrubs for Change (S4C) project is employing several approaches to address this situation, including those informed by behavioral science. Given that approximately 500 shrubs per cow are needed to generate enough leaf matter to bolster milk production, promoting FTT at scale necessitates the production, distribution, and successful planting of large numbers of shrub seedlings. We implemented a field experiment in Malawi’s Southern Region in late 2021 to test the effectiveness of a social learning intervention intended to motivate dairy farmers to significantly scale up the production of FTT seedlings. This intervention involved meeting with dairy farmers in 39 randomly selected milk production zones to review the numbers of seedlings being produced vis-à-vis local demand, coupled with the development of action plans to address identified production gaps. While we find that this intervention increased the setting up of private nurseries by 10% (p < 0.05), it only increased overall seedling production by an average of 20 additional seedlings per dairy farmer (p > 0.1). We offer several explanations for this lower than expected and statistically insignificant result, which point to the need for iterative rounds of engagement with farmers when supporting them to take up FTT and other complex agronomic and sustainable land management innovations.

Bibliometric research illuminates the scientific development of soil health (SH) studies in the Brazilian Semiarid, which are crucial for sustainable agriculture and mitigating climate change impacts. However, research trends on SH in the Brazilian Semiarid are still not well understood. This study aimed to illustrate how SH has been addressed in research concerning the Brazilian Semiarid. Terms such as ‘soil health,’ ‘soil quality,’ ‘biological quality,’ ‘chemical quality,’ ‘physical quality,’ as well as ‘Caatinga,’ ‘Brazilian Semiarid,’ and ‘Brazilian Northeast’ were searched in the Scopus® database. Bibliometric parameters were catalogued by the number of publications per year, most cited articles, primary institutions, main journals, and keyword frequency. The articles were evaluated based on the examination of chemical, physical, and biological indicators, and a similarity test was conducted to group articles according to these indicators. The bibliometric analysis reveals a significant increase in scientific output since 2020. Embrapa research centres contribute significantly to this expanding body of knowledge, with the leading journal ‘Revista Caatinga’ reflecting a specialized focus on the region’s unique challenges. The most evaluated indicators were pH, soil organic carbon, P, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, and bulk density, but the prevalence of biological indicators, such as soil organic carbon (SOC), activity of enzymes such as alkaline and acid phosphatase, and ß-glucosidase, microbial activity, and soil fauna, underscores key research themes. These findings highlight the practical implications of SH research, but while increased research is commendable and increasingly necessary, studies are still scarce. Increased research is vital for the development of strategies that contribute to the long-term sustainability of the Brazilian Semiarid region.

Incorporating the dominant male sterile gene, Ms44, in new maize varieties results in 50% non-pollen producing (FNP) varieties. This makes the varieties more nitrogen efficient and increases yield directly by an average of 200 kg ha−1 across yield levels. However, as half of the plants do not shed pollen, the presence of Ms44 in an FNP variety is clearly visible. This technology can improve food production and security in the African maize-based agri-food systems, but only if accepted by farmers. Farmers were therefore invited to 11 on-farm, researcher managed trial sites of FNP varieties in Kenya over 2 years. They were asked to identify the traits they find important in evaluating maize varieties and to score the FNP varieties, as well as their conventional counterparts, on these criteria (including yield, resistance to pests, and cob size) and overall, using a five-point hedonic scale. In total, 2,697 farmers participated, of which 62% were women. Farmers mentioned many traits they find important, especially yield and related traits, early maturity, and drought resistance, but also tassel and pollen formation. In 2017, mid-season, participants scored FNP varieties lower than conventional varieties on tassel and pollen formation, indicating that farmers could distinguish the trait. FNP varieties still received higher scores for yield and overall evaluation. In mid-season 2018, participants no longer scored FNP varieties lower for pollen formation as they now understood the technology. In both years, at the end-season evaluation, scores for tassel formation were not different, but participants scored FNP varieties higher for yield and overall. We conclude that farmers recognized the FNP trait but did not mind it as they clearly favored its yield advantage. The FNP technology, therefore, has high potential not only to increase maize yields, food production, and food security in the agricultural systems of Africa but also to increase varietal turnover and the adoption of new, high-yielding, climate-smart maize hybrids.

A range of legumes was evaluated in North-east Thailand for dry season forage production on stored moisture following harvest of the paddy rice crop. Crotalaria juncea (sunnhemp) and Lablab purpureus (lablab) produced the best dry matter yields of 1950 and 2020 kg−1 ha respectively on a cultivated paddy field without further fertilizer. Stored moisture was adequate for these two but growth of other species was poor, especially on plots that received no prior cultivation. In pot experiments, sunnhemp did not respond to either nitrogen application or Rhizobium inoculation, indicating that native strains were effective for nitrogen fixation. Lablab responded to both treatments and gave a 55% dry matter response to inoculation with Rhizobium in the field.

The rapid loss of viability in extracted cacao beans prevents long storage or long periods of shipment of selected seeds. Beans partially dried in a stream of carbon dioxide or nitrogen and stored at 25 to 28°C remained viable up to 60 days whereas those dried in air lost viability within 45 days. Storage of artificially dried beans in the absence of air was detrimental to their viability. A moisture content of about 50 per cent gave a high percentage germination within 30 days and reduced deterioration of beans.

N, P and K fertilizers improved mulberry leaf, stem and fruit yields on peat, the optimum rates being 100 kg/ha/yr N, 25 kg P and 62·5 kg K, with further leaf responses to N and K if applied together in the ratio of 3:2. Harvesting every 2 months at 60 cm height gave better yearly leaf yields than cuttings 3–12 months apart, but annual stem yields were not affected by harvesting frequency and fruit yields were optimum when plants were cut at intervals of 5–6 months. Harvesting quarterly at 60 cm produced better leaf and stem yields than cutting lower (15 and 30 cm) or higher (100 and 180 cm). Two Thai cvs (Noi I and Mii) were female-sterile but the Local Malaysian produced fruits.

Studies were carried out at Kalyani during 1982–83 and 1983–84 to evolve a multiple cropping system with cotton as the main crop. Cotton was intercropped with paddy, greengram, blackgram, peanut and soyabean in the rainy season, and these were also grown as solccrops followed by crops of peanut, lentil, chickpea, wheat and mustard, respectively, in the winter season. All plots were subsequently cropped with sesame in the summer season. There was an increase in total grain yield, land equivalent ratio (LER), area time equivalent ratio (ATER) and relative net return (RNR) values when legumes and cereals were intercropped with cotton. The yield of the winter crops grown with the help of residual soil moisture was in the order: chickpea > mustard > lentil > wheat > peanut. Sesame yielded best after the chickpea and blackgram sequence and yielded almost as well after the lentil and greengram. The greatest net return was obtained from the cotton and paddy (1:1) intercrop followed by sesame.

An early upright-bunch variety of groundnut, Barberton, and a medium-late spreading-bunch variety, Ashford, were compared at 7·5, 15·0 and 30·0 cm. intra-row spacings planted at one and two kernels per hill on 60 cm. ridges in the irrigated heavy clay soil of the Sudan Gezira in 1963 and 1964. Barberton was harvested on days 95, 110 and 125, and Ashford on days 125, 140 and 155 after planting in July–August. Ashford outyielded Barberton at the lower densities, and the best pod yields were obtained on day 125 harvest at a population of 55,000–60,000 plants per acre. A higher plant population depressed the yield of Ashford while the increased pod yield of Barberton was not significant. Field germination of kernels increased more in Barberton with delay in harvest and with decrease in plant population than in Ashford. Mean pod and kernel weights and shelling out-turn of Barberton increased with delay in harvest. Barberton gave higher oil content and shelling out-turn, and lower proportion of pods with single kernels than Ashford. The highest population of Barberton gave the best oil content in early harvests. In general, the arrangement of plants within rows at similar populations had only small effects except on the quality of nuts, which was improved by planting single kernels at close spacing (7·5 cm.) with the variety Barberton and two kernels at wide spacing (15·0 cm.) with Ashford, at optimum plant populations.

Unpublished, or not easily accessible, details are presented on the establishment of the agrometeorological network in Uganda and the collection, analysis and publication of the observations. Some of the agrometeorological research methods commonly used in Uganda are summarized.

High plant populations caused a reduction in pod set and consequently in seed yield. Removal of axillary branches reduced the average weight of seed and percentage seed oil on primary racemes, indicating transport of photosynthate from branch leaves to storage sites in pods on primary racemes. Debranching at low densities was also associated with premature senescence of leaves and desiccation of immature pods, suggesting that branch removal need not have an exclusively simple nutritional basis. High canopy density reduced oil content, and seeds borne on primary racemes had lower oil levels than those on axillary branches.

The world grain situation and shortages of fertilizer place the agricultural industry even more to the forefront of policy and planning in low-income tropical farming areas. Planning must be positively directed toward eliminating the major constraint of inaccessibility to markets. The narrowing of alternative agricultural opportunities as accessibility decreases is indicated for a sample of farm-family households; low-income farmers isolated from the services sector arc particularly susceptible to the constraint of ‘scarcity of season’ which in turn is aggravated by the economic cost of ill-health when this coincides with the period of heaviest agricultural work. The problem which arises is one in which farmers rely on topping-up farm income with income from non-farm activities. Unless a two-to-threefold net income over any other combination of income-earning opportunities can be assured, small-scale producers largely persist in treating farming simply as a way of life by which the subsistence needs of the family can be met without recourse to new input forms.

Legume agronomic research in Southern Africa has often focused on integrating legumes into smallholder cereal cropping systems, but there is limited information available on the feasibility and soil health implications of continuous cropping legumes in the region. Continuous legumes may be suitable in areas with large livestock populations where a premium is placed on high-quality forage, or where efforts are underway to reclaim degraded cropland. Our objectives in this study were to (i) evaluate the performance of diverse legumes under continuous cropping and conservation tillage management with no fertility inputs and (ii) assess the response of soil health parameters to continuous legumes in a semi-arid environment. A 4-year study was conducted in Limpopo, South Africa beginning in the 2011–2012 growing season in which 10 legume and fallow treatments were imposed in the same plots for 4 growing seasons. All legumes responded negatively in varying degrees to continuous cropping in terms of biomass and nutrient accumulation. Lablab (Lablab purpureus L.) was the top-performing legume in the study and accumulated 4.5–13 Mg ha−1 of biomass and 153–345, 11–34, and 75–286 kg ha−1 of N, P, and K, respectively. Lablab often outperformed natural fallow, while other legumes generally performed as well as or inferior to natural fallow, depending on species and growing season. Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata Walp) was especially incompatible with continuous cropping and averaged less than 252 kg ha−1 and 2.1 Mg ha−1 of grain and biomass, respectively, from 2012–2013 to 2014–2015. Continuous cropping did not lead to sustained improvements in soil health. By 2014–2015, soil organic matter for all treatments had either declined or resembled baseline values. Rates of potentially mineralizable N in cowpea, lablab, vining mucuna (Mucuna pruriens var. Utilis), natural fallow, and bare ground plots fell by 70–96% during the study. There was also evidence for lower recovery of leached K by legumes compared to natural fallow species. In conclusion, legumes, such as lablab, should be considered as continuous forages on marginal land in areas where high-quality forage is in demand, but continuous cropping legumes without fertility inputs are not an effective strategy for improving soil health on degraded cropland in this semi-arid region of Southern Africa. Future research efforts may focus on the grazing strategies and baling frequencies required to optimize annual biomass accumulation of continuous lablab to meet livestock demand and support smallholder livelihoods.

Regional population recommendations for sorghum production in Botswana were calculated by applying long-term meteorological records to an experimentally developed model linking sorghum yield to plant population and rainfall. The basic recommendation at any place was taken to be that population maximizing local long-term yield means while keeping the risk of crop failure to one year in ten or less. Values ranged from 25 000 to nearly 70 000 plants ha−1, according to rainfall amount and reliability. The modifications of these basic recommendations necessary to allow for differences in standards of husbandry and for sorghum variety are discussed.

Ramie (Boehmeria nivea Gaud.), which can provide fodder in addition to bast fibre, was supplied with nitrogen in three different forms: as neem cake coated urea (NCU), lac coated urea (LCU) and standard urea, at rates of 60, 120, 180, 240 and 300 kg N ha−1 annually in four equal applications. The ramie was cut four times a year for two years. NCU increased fresh weight, leaf dry matter yield and leaf protein at almost every cutting compared with the other forms of nitrogen, and there was an indication of increased residual nitrogen in the soil. Leaf dry matter and protein content increased with increasing levels of nitrogen up to 180 kg ha−1. It is suggested that coating urea with neem cake makes it a better source of nitrogen for ramie leaf production.
