We study the dynamics of continuous maps of the circle with periodic points. We show that the centre is the closure of the periodic points and that the depth of the centre is at most two. We also characterize the property that every power is transitive in terms of transitivity of a single power and some periodic data.

The Mahler measure M(α) of an algebraic integer α is the product of the absolute value of the conjugates of α which lie outside the unit circle. The quantity log M(α) occurs in ergodic theory as the entropy of an endomorphism of the torus. Adler and Marcus showed that if β = M(α) then β is a Perron number which is a unit if α is a unit. They asked whether the Perron number β whose minimal polynomial is tm −t −1 is the measure of any algebraic integer. We show here that the answer is negative for all m > 3.

We show that given some natural conditions on a 3 × 3 hyperbolic matrix of integers A(det A = 1) there exists a Markov partition for the induced map A(x + ℤ3) = A(x)+ℤ3 on T3 whose transition matrix is (A−1)t. For expanding endomorphisms of T2 we construct a Markov partition so that there is a semiconjugacy from a full (one-sided) shift.

In this paper we present a generalization to higher dimensions of the techniques for computation of the entropy of graphs in dimension one. Following these methods, we obtain a lower bound for the topological entropy of a differentiable map F:ℝn→ℝn possessing a snap-back repeller.

We show that if (ut) is a one-parameter subgroup of SL (n, ℝ) consisting of unipotent matrices, then for any ε > 0 there exists a compact subset K of SL(n, ℝ)/SL(n, ℤ) such that the following holds: for any g ∈ SL(n, ℝ) either m({t ∈ [0, T] | utg SL (n, ℤ) ∈ K}) > (1 – ε)T for all large T (m being the Lebesgue measure) or there exists a non-trivial (g−1utg)-invariant subspace defined by rational equations.

Similar results are deduced for orbits of unipotent flows on other homogeneous spaces. We also conclude that if G is a connected semisimple Lie group and Γ is a lattice in G then there exists a compact subset D of G such that for any closed connected unipotent subgroup U, which is not contained in any proper closed subgroup of G, we have G = DΓ U. The decomposition is applied to get results on Diophantine approximation.

We show that entire functions which are critically finite and which meet certain growth conditions admit ‘Cantor bouquets’ in their Julia sets. These are invariant subsets of the Julia set which are homeomorphic to the product of a Cantor set and the line [0, ∞). All of the curves in the bouquet tend to ∞ in the same direction, and the map behaves like the shift automorphism on the Cantor set. Hence the dynamics near ∞ for these types of maps may be analyzed completely. Among the entire maps to which our methods apply are exp (z), sin (z), and cos (z).

The cohomology action of an Anosov diffeomorphism on a nilmanifold resembles that of a Cartesian product map. Corresponding results hold for infranilmanifolds, giving an invariant bigrading of the cohomology and a fourfold symmetry that extends Poincaré duality. Holonomy invariant cocycles are applied to the action on first cohomology.

Let f denote a continuous map of a compact interval to itself, P(f) the set of periodic points of f and Λ(f) the set of ω-limit points of f. Sarkovskǐi has shown that Λ(f) is closed, and hence ⊆Λ(f), and Nitecki has shown that if f is piecewise monotone, then Λ(f)=. We prove that if x∈Λ(f)−, then the set of ω-limit points of x is an infinite minimal set. This result provides the inspiration for the construction of a map f for which Λ(f)≠.

Let φ: ℝ × M → M be a continuous flow on a compact C∞ two-manifold M. It is proved that there exists a C1 flow ψ on M which is topologically equivalent to φ, and that the following conditions are equivalent:

(a) any minimal set of φ is trivial;

(b) φ is topologically equivalent to a C2 flow;

(c) φ is topologically equivalent to a C∞ flow.

Also proved is a structure and an existence theorem for continuous flows with non-trivial recurrence.

We define a class Σ of entire functions whose covering properties are similar to those of rational maps. The set Σ is closed under composition of functions, and we show that when regarded as dynamical systems of the plane, the elements of Σ share many properties with rational maps. In particular, they have finite dimensional spaces of quasiconformal deformations, and they contain no wandering domains in their stable sets.

We show that for every ergodic ℤd-action T, there is a mixing ℤd-action S which is orbit equivalent to T via an orbit equivalence that is a weak a-equivalence for all a ≥ 1 and a strong b-equivalence for all b ∈ (0, 1). If T has positive entropy, then S can be taken to have completely positive entropy. If the dimension d is greater than one, the orbit equivalence may be taken to be bounded and a strong b-equivalence for all b > 0.

Kupka-Smale like theorems are proven in the real analytic case, using existing perturbation schemes for the smooth case and the heat operator. As a consequence, a topological proof is obtained of Siegel's theorem on the generic divergence of normal form transformations.

Vector fields of , 1 ≤ r ≤ ∞, with non-trivial recurrent points are classified in two types, one of which we call the constant type inspired by the terminology of continued fractions. Let have finitely many singularities and p ∈ T2 be a non-wandering point of X. With the exception of the case when X is of constant type and, simultaneously, p is non-trivial recurrent, we prove that there exists arbitrarily close to X (in the Cr-topology) having a periodic trajectory through p.

In the class of rank-1 transformations, there is a strong dichotomy. For such a T, the commutant is either irivial, consisting only of the powers of T, or is uncountable. In addition, the commutant semigroup, C(T), is in fact a group. As a consequence, the notion of weak isomorphism between two transformations is equivalent to isomorphism, if at least one of the transformations is rank-1. In § 2, we show that any proper factor of a rank-1 must be rigid. Hence, neither Ornstein's rank-1 mixing nor Chacón's transformation, can be a factor of a rank-1.

Parmi les systèmes dynamiques définis par des substitutions, les mieux connus sont ceux qui proviennent de substitutions à longueur constante. F. M. Dekking [1] a déterminé les valeurs propres de ces systèmes, et, plus récemment, M. Queffelec a étudié leur type spectral maximal. On se propose ici de déterminer les valeurs propres de ces systèmes dans le cas général des substitutions à longueur variable; dans cette direction, un résultat partiel a été obtenu par J. C. Martin [3] dans le cas des substitutions de 2 lettres, pour les valeurs propres correspondant à des fonctions propres continues.

When does a non-singular flow on a 3-manifold have a 2-dimensional foliation everywhere transverse to it? A complete answer is given for a large class of flows, those with 1-dimensional hyperbolic chain recurrent set. We find a simple necessary and sufficient condition on the linking of periodic orbits of the flow.

We study the various notions of spectrum for an action α of a locally compact abelian group G on a type IC*-algebra A, and discuss how these are related to the structure of the crossed product A ⋊αG. In the case where A has continuous trace and the action of G on  is minimal, we completely describe the ideal structure of the crossed product. A key role is played by the restriction of α to a certain ‘symmetrizer subgroup’ S of the common stabilizer in G of the points of Â. We show by example that, contrary to a conjecture of Bratteli, it is possble for A⋊G to be primitive but not simple, provided that S is not discrete. In such cases, the Connes spectrum Γ(α) differs from the strong Connes spectrum of Kishimoto. The counterexamples come from subtle phenomena in topological dynamics.

We investigate the implications of transverse homoclinic orbits to fixed points in dissipative diffeomorphisms of the annulus. We first recover a result due to Aronson et al. [3]: that certain such ‘rotary’ orbits imply the existence of an interval of rotation numbers in the rotation set of the diffeomorphism. Our proof differs from theirs in that we use embeddings of the Smale [61] horseshoe construction, rather than shadowing and pseudo orbits. The symbolic dynamics associated with the non-wandering Cantor set of the horseshoe is then used to prove the existence of uncountably many invariant Cantor sets (Cantori) of each irrational rotation number in the interval, some of which are shown to be ‘dissipative’ analogues of the order preserving Aubry-Mather Cantor sets found by variational methods in area preserving twist maps. We then apply our results to the Josephson junction equation, checking the necessary hypotheses via Melnikov's method, and give a partial characterization of the attracting set of the Poincaré map for this equation. This provides a concrete example of a ‘Birkhoff attractor’ [10].

Let P and f be polynomials in several (real) variables, with P having no negative coefficients. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for there to exist a positive integer n with Pnf having no negative coefficients; roughly speaking, the conditions involve the behaviour of f as a function on the positive orthant, together with its behaviour on a boundary constructed from the supporting monomials of P. This completes a series of results due to Poincaré (1883), Meissner (1911), and Polyà (1927). The former discusses the one variable case, the latter two deal with the situation that the Newton polyhedra of both P and f be, respectively, standard hypercubes, standard simplices.

We give a new proof of the existence of analytic models of pseudo-Anosov maps. The persistence properties of Thurston's maps ensure that any Co-perturbation of them presents all their dynamical features. Using Lyapunov functions of two variables we are able to choose certain analytic perturbations which do not add any new dynamical behaviour to the original pseudo-Anosov map.
