We produce a holomorphic family of infinitely generated quasi-Fuchsian groups such that the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set L (Гλ) is identical to 1 for small λ, but strictly greater than 1 for λ ˜ 1. In particular, this shows that Hausdorff dimension does not depend real analytically on the parameter λ, contrary to the case of finitely generated groups.

In this article we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the conjugacy of the expanding maps on the circle S1 to be differentiable.

In the case when m2(μ) is infinite and E(μ)=0 we give examples for which we have divergence and other examples which show convergence is possible.

We consider a piecewise continuous, piecewise monotone interval map and a piecewise constant weight. With these data we associate a weighted kneading matrix which generalizes the Milnor—Thurston matrix. We show that the determinant of this matrix is related to a natural weighted zeta function.

We present a class of S-unimodal maps having an invariant measure which is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure. This measure can often be proved to be finite. We give an example of a map which has such a finite measure and for which the lim inf of the derivatives of the iterates of the map in the critical value is finite. It will be shown that all topologically conjugate non-flat S-unimodal maps have the same properties.

We construct an example of transitive Anosov flow on a compact 3-manifold, which admits a transversal torus and is not the suspension of an Anosov diffeomorphism.

It is known that in one dimension an irreducible subshift of finite type has a unique measure of maximal entropy, the so-called Parry measure. Here we give a counterexample to this in higher dimensions. For this example, we also describe the geometric structure of the measures of maximal entropy and show that there are exactly two extremal measures.

We study invariant measures for a continuous function which maps a real interval into itself. We show that the ratio of the measures of the two subintervals into which it is divided by a fixed point is constrained by the the set of periods of periodic points. As a consequence of this we give a new forcing relation between periodic points.

The β-transformation ƒβ(x) = βx(mod 1), for β > 1, has a symbolic dynamics generalizing radix expansions to an integer base. Two important invariants of ƒβ are the (Artin-Mazur) zeta function

where Pk counts the number of fixed points of , and the lap-counting function where Lk counts the number of monotonic pieces of the kth iterate . For β-transformations these functions are related by ζβ(z) = (1 − z)Lβ(z). The function ζβ(z) is meromorphic in the unit disk, is holomorphic in {z: |z| < 1/β}, has a simple pole at z = 1/β, and has no other singularities with |z| = 1/β. Let M(β) denote the minimum modulus of any pole of ζβ(z) in |z| < 1 other than z = 1/β, and set M(β) = 1 if no other pole exists with |z| < 1. Then Pk = βk + O((M(β)−1+ε)k) for any ε > 0. This paper shows that M(β) is a continuous function, that ( for all β, and that An asymptotic formula is derived for M(β) as β → 1+, which implies that M(β) < 1 for all β in an interval (1, 1 + c0). The set is shown to have properties analogous to the set of Pisot numbers. It is closed, totally disconnected, has smallest element ≥ 1 + C0 and contains infinitely many β falling in each interval [n, n + 1) for n ∈ ℤ+. All known members of are algebraic integers which are either Pisot or Salem numbers.

We study several notions of positivity for a class of real-valued functions of several variables that includes the Laurent polynomials. We show that Handelman's positivity condition is characterized by boundedness of the associated Legendre transformation, or boundedness of the entropy function, while another notion of positivity here introduced characterizes the mapping property of the Legendre transformation derived by Marcus and Tuncel for beta functions. Several examples are given to distinguish the various notions of positivity.

‘Bunching’ conditions on an Anosov system guarantee the regularity of the Anosov splitting up to C2−ε. Open dense sets of symplectic Anosov systems and geodesic flows do not have Anosov splitting exceeding the asserted regularity. This is the first local construction of low-regularity examples.

The pointwise spectral radii of irreducible matrices whose entries are polynomials with positive, integral coefficients are studied in this paper. Most results are derived in the case that the resulting algebraic function, the beta function of S. Tuncel, is in fact a polynomial. We show that the set of beta functions forms a semiring, and the spectral radius of a matrix of beta functions is again a beta function. We also show that the coefficients of a polynomial beta function p must be real algebraic integers, and p satisfies (after a change of variables if necessary) the inequality for non-zero (and not all positive) complex numbers z1,…,zd. If and the ordered sequence of exponents appearing in p is of the form (m,m+1,…,M−,1,M) for some integers m and M, the same inequality is necessary and sufficient for p to be a beta function.

We present a new proof of a strengthened version of Anosov's multiphase averaging theorem, originally stated for systems of ODEs with slow variables evolving in Rm and fast variables evolving on a smooth immersed manifold. Our result allows the fast variables to belong to an arbitrary smooth compact Riemannian manifold, and the vector field to have only Sobolev regularity. This is accomplished using normal form techniques adapted to a slightly generalized version of the DiPema-Lions theory of generalized flows for ODEs.

Deng has demonstrated a mechanism through which a perturbation of a vector field having an inclination-flip homoclinic orbit would have a Smale horseshoe. In this article we prove that if the eigenvalues of the saddle to which the homoclinic orbit is asymptotic satisfy the condition 2λu > min{−λs, λuu} then there are arbitrarily small perturbations of the vector field which possess a Smale horseshoe. Moreover we analyze a sequence of bifurcations leading to the annihilation of the horseshoe. This sequence contains, in particular, the points of existence of n-homoclinic orbits with arbitrary n.

We give destruction results under analytic small perturbations for invariant circles of exact area-preserving monotone twist maps, applying methods developed by M. Herman and J. Mather.

We study the properties of absolutely continuous invariant measures for one-dimensional transformations satisfying Schmitt's condition. We prove existence, constrictiveness of the induced Perron-Frobenius operator, openness of supports, estimate on a number of ergodic components, exponential decay of correlation, Bernoulli property, etc.

A smooth transitive Anosov flow on a compact manifold N which is uniformly (a, b)-expanding at periodic points for 1 < a < b is uniformly (a − ε, b + ε)-expanding on all of N for all ε > 0.

For a fixed irrational α > 0 we say that probability measure-preserving transformations S and T are α-equivalent if they can be realized as cross-sections in a common flow such that the return time functions on the cross-sections both take values in {1, 1 +α} and have equal integrals. Similarly we call two flows F and G α-equivalent if F has a cross-section S and G has a cross-section T isomorphic to S and again both the return time functions take values in {1, 1 + α} and have equal integrals. The integer kα(S), equal to the least positive such such that exp2πikα-1 belongs to the point spectrum of S, is an invariant of α-equivalence.

We obtain a characterization of a-equivalence as a particular type of restricted orbit equivalence and use this to prove that within the class of loosely Bernoulli maps ka(S) together with the entropy h(S) are complete invariants of α-equivalence. There is a corresponding a-equivalence theorem for flows which has as a consequence, for example, that up to an obvious entropy restriction, any weakly mixing cross-section of a loosely Bernoulli flow can also be realized as a cross-section with a {1,1 + α}-valued return time function.

For the proof of the α-equivalence theorem we develop a relative Kakutani equivalence theorem for compact group extensions which is of interest in its own right. Finally, an example of Fieldsteel and Rudolph is used to show that in general kα(S) is not a complete invariant of α-equivalence within a given even Kakutani equivalence class.

Using an invariant of Cuntz, we classify reducible shifts of finite type with two irreducible components up to flow equivalence.

It is shown that three different notions of regularity for the stable foliation on the unit tangent bundle of a compact manifold of negative curvature are equivalent. Moreover if is a time-preserving conjugacy of geodesic flows of such manifolds M, N then the Lyapunov exponents at corresponding periodic points of the flows coincide. In particular Δ also preserves the Lebesgue measure class.
