In this work, we analyze ergodic properties of certain partially hyperbolic attractors whose central direction has a neutral behavior; the main feature is a condition of transversality between the projections of unstable leaves, projecting through the stable foliation. We prove that partial hyperbolic attractors satisfying this condition of transversality, neutrality in the central direction and regularity of the stable foliation admit a finite number of physical measures, coinciding with the ergodic u-Gibbs States, whose union of the basins has full Lebesgue measure. Moreover, we describe the construction of robustly non-hyperbolic attractors satisfying these properties.

In this paper, we consider pure infiniteness of generalized Cuntz–Krieger algebras associated to labeled spaces $(E,{\mathcal{L}},{\mathcal{E}})$. It is shown that a $C^{\ast }$-algebra $C^{\ast }(E,{\mathcal{L}},{\mathcal{E}})$ is purely infinite in the sense that every non-zero hereditary subalgebra contains an infinite projection (we call this property (IH)) if $(E,{\mathcal{L}},{\mathcal{E}})$ is disagreeable and every vertex connects to a loop. We also prove that under the condition analogous to (K) for usual graphs, $C^{\ast }(E,{\mathcal{L}},{\mathcal{E}})=C^{\ast }(p_{A},s_{a})$ is purely infinite in the sense of Kirchberg and Rørdam if and only if every generating projection $p_{A}$, $A\in {\mathcal{E}}$, is properly infinite, and also if and only if every quotient of $C^{\ast }(E,{\mathcal{L}},{\mathcal{E}})$ has property (IH).

We show that, up to topological conjugation, the equivalence class of a Morse–Smale diffeomorphism without heteroclinic curves on a $3$-manifold is completely defined by an embedding of two-dimensional stable and unstable heteroclinic laminations to a characteristic space.

We show that there exist non-landing exponential rays with bounded accumulation sets. By introducing folding models of certain rays, we prove that each of the corresponding accumulation sets is an indecomposable continuum containing part of the ray, an indecomposable continuum disjoint from the ray or a Jordan arc.

We consider piecewise $C^{2}$ non-flat maps of the interval and show that, for Lebesgue almost every point, its omega-limit set is either a periodic orbit, a cycle of intervals or the closure of the orbits of a subset of the critical points. In particular, every piecewise $C^{2}$ non-flat map of the interval displays only a finite number of non-periodic attractors.

It was recently shown by Aka, Einsiedler and Shapira that if $d>2$, the set of primitive vectors on large spheres when projected to the $(d-1)$-dimensional sphere coupled with the shape of the lattice in their orthogonal complement equidistribute in the product space of the sphere with the space of shapes of $(d-1)$-dimensional lattices. Specifically, for $d=3,4,5$ some congruence conditions are assumed. By using recent advances in the theory of unipotent flows, we effectivize the dynamical proof to remove those conditions for $d=4,5$. It also follows that equidistribution takes place with a polynomial error term with respect to the length of the primitive points.

We establish pointwise ergodic theorems for a large class of natural averages on simple Lie groups of real rank one, going well beyond the radial case considered previously. The proof is based on a new approach to pointwise ergodic theorems, which is independent of spectral theory. Instead, the main new ingredient is the use of direct geometric arguments in hyperbolic space.

We study minimality for continuous actions of abelian semigroups on compact Hausdorff spaces with a free interval. First, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for such a space to admit a minimal action of a given abelian semigroup. Further, for actions of abelian semigroups we provide a trichotomy for the topological structure of minimal sets intersecting a free interval.

For a continuous flow on a compact metric space, the aim of this paper is to prove a Conley-type decomposition of the strong chain recurrent set. We first discuss in detail the main properties of strong chain recurrent sets. We then introduce the notion of strongly stable set as a closed invariant set which is the intersection of the $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}$-limits of a specific family of nested and definitively invariant neighborhoods of itself. This notion strengthens that of stable set; moreover, any attractor turns out to be strongly stable. We then show that strongly stable sets play the role of attractors in the decomposition of the strong chain recurrent set; indeed, we prove that the strong chain recurrent set coincides with the intersection of all strongly stable sets and their complementary.

Using quantitative perturbation theory for linear operators, we prove a spectral gap for transfer operators of various families of intermittent maps with almost constant potentials (‘high-temperature’ regime). Hölder and bounded $p$-variation potentials are treated, in each case under a suitable assumption on the map, but the method should apply more generally. It is notably proved that for any Pommeau–Manneville map, any potential with Lipschitz constant less than 0.0014 has a transfer operator acting on $\operatorname{Lip}([0,1])$ with a spectral gap; and that for any two-to-one unimodal map, any potential with total variation less than 0.0069 has a transfer operator acting on $\operatorname{BV}([0,1])$ with a spectral gap. We also prove under quite general hypotheses that the classical definition of spectral gap coincides with the formally stronger one used in Giulietti et al [The calculus of thermodynamical formalism. J. Eur. Math. Soc., to appear. Preprint, 2015, arXiv:1508.01297], allowing all results there to be applied under the high-temperature bounds proved here: analyticity of pressure and equilibrium states, central limit theorem, etc.

Let $G$ be a sofic group and $X$ a compact group with $G\curvearrowright X$ by automorphisms. Using (and reformulating) the notion of local and doubly empirical convergence developed by Austin, we show that in many cases the topological and the measure-theoretic entropy with respect to the Haar measure of $G\curvearrowright X$ agree. Our method of proof recovers all known examples. Moreover, the proofs are direct and do not go through explicitly computing the measure-theoretic or topological entropy.

We study thermodynamic formalism for the family of robustly transitive diffeomorphisms introduced by Mañé, establishing existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states for natural classes of potential functions. In particular, we characterize the Sinaĭ–Ruelle–Bowen measures for these diffeomorphisms as unique equilibrium states for a suitable geometric potential. We also obtain large deviations and multifractal results for the unique equilibrium states produced by the main theorem.

We define a subgroup of the universal sofic group, obtained as the normalizer of a separable abelian subalgebra. This subgroup can be obtained as an extension by the group of automorphisms on a standard probability space. We show that each sofic representation can be conjugated inside this subgroup.

In this paper, we make partial progress on a function field version of the dynamical uniform boundedness conjecture for certain one-dimensional families ${\mathcal{F}}$ of polynomial maps, such as the family $f_{c}(x)=x^{m}+c$, where $m\geq 2$. We do this by making use of the dynatomic modular curves $Y_{1}(n)$ (respectively $Y_{0}(n)$) which parametrize maps $f$ in ${\mathcal{F}}$ together with a point (respectively orbit) of period $n$ for $f$. The key point in our strategy is to study the set of primes $p$ for which the reduction of $Y_{1}(n)$ modulo $p$ fails to be smooth or irreducible. Morton gave an algorithm to construct, for each $n$, a discriminant $D_{n}$ whose list of prime factors contains all the primes of bad reduction for $Y_{1}(n)$. In this paper, we refine and strengthen Morton’s results. Specifically, we exhibit two criteria on a prime $p$ dividing $D_{n}$: one guarantees that $p$ is in fact a prime of bad reduction for $Y_{1}(n)$, yet this same criterion implies that $Y_{0}(n)$ is geometrically irreducible. The other guarantees that the reduction of $Y_{1}(n)$ modulo $p$ is actually smooth. As an application of the second criterion, we extend results of Morton, Flynn, Poonen, Schaefer, and Stoll by giving new examples of good reduction of $Y_{1}(n)$ for several primes dividing $D_{n}$ when $n=7,8,11$, and $f_{c}(x)=x^{2}+c$. The proofs involve a blend of arithmetic and complex dynamics, reduction theory for curves, ramification theory, and the combinatorics of the Mandelbrot set.

We give a combinatorial classification for the class of postcritically fixed Newton maps of polynomials as dynamical systems. This lays the foundation for classification results of more general classes of Newton maps. A fundamental ingredient is the proof that for every Newton map (postcritically finite or not) every connected component of the basin of an attracting fixed point can be connected to $\infty$ through a finite chain of such components.

We prove that, for $C^{1}$-generic diffeomorphisms, if a homoclinic class is not hyperbolic, then there is a non-trivial non-hyperbolic ergodic measure supported on it. This proves a conjecture by Díaz and Gorodetski.

We implement a differential-geometric approach to normal forms for contracting measurable cocycles to $\operatorname{Diff}^{q}(\mathbb{R}^{n},\mathbf{0})$, $q\geq 2$. We obtain resonance polynomial normal forms for the contracting cocycle and its centralizer, via $C^{q}$ changes of coordinates. These are interpreted as non-stationary invariant differential-geometric structures. We also consider the case of contracted foliations in a manifold, and obtain $C^{q}$ homogeneous structures on leaves for an action of the group of subresonance polynomial diffeomorphisms together with translations.

We use Katsura’s topological graphs to define Toeplitz extensions of Latrémolière and Packer’s noncommutative-solenoid $C^{\ast }$-algebras. We identify a natural dynamics on each Toeplitz noncommutative solenoid and study the associated Kubo–Martin–Schwinger (KMS) states. Our main result shows that the space of extreme points of the KMS simplex of the Toeplitz noncommutative torus at a strictly positive inverse temperature is homeomorphic to a solenoid; indeed, there is an action of the solenoid group on the Toeplitz noncommutative solenoid that induces a free and transitive action on the extreme boundary of the KMS simplex. With the exception of the degenerate case of trivial rotations, at inverse temperature zero there is a unique KMS state, and only this one factors through Latrémolière and Packer’s noncommutative solenoid.

This article is devoted to studying which conditions imply that a topological dynamical system is mean sensitive and which do not. Among other things, we show that every uniquely ergodic, mixing system with positive entropy is mean sensitive. On the other hand, we provide an example of a transitive system which is cofinitely sensitive or Devaney chaotic with positive entropy but fails to be mean sensitive. As applications of our theory and examples, we negatively answer an open question regarding equicontinuity/sensitivity dichotomies raised by Tu, we introduce and present results of locally mean equicontinuous systems and we show that mean sensitivity of the induced hyperspace does not imply that of the phase space.

We study double ergodic averages with respect to two general commuting transformations and establish a sharp quantitative result on their convergence in the norm. We approach the problem via real harmonic analysis, using recently developed methods for bounding multilinear singular integrals with certain entangled structure. A byproduct of our proof is a bound for a two-dimensional bilinear square function related to the so-called triangular Hilbert transform.
