From a biological point of view considerable interest must always attend any investigation of the earliest known organisms, and, although we may legitimately infer that a flora and fauna existed prior to Cambrian times, the organisms preserved for us in rocks of that age constitute, at present, the first chapter of palæontological history. For this reason alone the Archæocyathinæ are important, since they form part of the Lower Cambrian fauna. When, however, we consider that the genera included in the group are very distinct from one another (indicating that the family was probably of considerable antiquity even in those early times), that the types have, as far as we know, a wide geographical distribution, and that to certain skeletal characters usually associated with the Porifera they unite others more common among the Cœlenterata, interest is still further stimulated. On the other hand, although recorded in great abundance from several widely separated localities, they are not, as a rule, common fossils in Cambrian strata, and consequently the group has not received much attention.

The early Tertiary Mull-Morvern lava succession, NW Scotland, represents the thickest continuous section (1000 m from sea level to the top of Ben More) of Tertiary lavas exposed in the UK. This succession has been sampled and geochemically analysed, on a flow-by-flow basis, throughout the lava succession. Field observations during the course of this sampling suggest that the early lava flows (the Staffa Magma sub-Type) ponded in palaeovalleys along with interlava sediments. In the main part of the Mull lava succession (the Mull Plateau Group) the lava flows are on average ∼ 5 m thick. Most previous Hebridean workers have assumed that the red horizons commonly found between these later lava flows, represent weathered flow tops. However, this study has shown that in some places these red ‘boles’ appear to be a combination of both volcanic ash and weathered basalt.

Chemically distinctive units of flows have been found throughout the succession. The two most abundant magma sub-types of the Mull Plateau Group, primitive (>9wt% MgO) basalts with Ba/Nb» 15 and more evolved (<9wt% MgO) basalts-hawaiites with Ba/Nb<15, form packets of flow units which can be up to 200 m thick. These chemically distinctive flow units have been correlated across the lava succession. However, the correlation of individual lava flows has proved difficult. The Mull Plateau Group lavas generally become more evolved and less contaminated with continental crust towards the top of the succession, culminating in the trachytes of the Pale Group on Ben More. Basaltic lavas above the Pale Group have markedly different trace element ratios, and seem to represent shallower, more extensive asthenospheric melting than the Mull Plateau Group.

The ontogeny of Parabolina spinulosa is described on the basis of material from Andrarum (Skåne) and Jämtland in Sweden. Protaspides are rare, and indifferently preserved, but well-preserved isolated tagmata and complete specimens from the early meraspid stages onwards were available for study. Whereas the ontogeny is broadly similar to that of the earlier Olenus wahlenbergi, there are subtle differences, notably in a greater spinosity from the earlier stages and a gradual, rather than a sudden, change of surface sculpture in the early holaspid. P. spinulosa at all stages of growth is much more variable than is Olenus. Meraspides have larger articulating halfrings anteriorly and the first thoracic segments are of greater sagittal length than in the adult; these were adaptations which enabled Parabolina to undergo cylindrical enrollment from an early stage.

Parabolina is considered to have arisen from the earlier genus Olenus, and on the basis of comparative ontogeny many, though not all, features of Parabolina appear to be of paedomorphic origin. These include the reduction of the preglabellar field, retention of the visual surface, position of the eyes set close to the glabella, retention of a conterminant hypostome, yoking of the librigenae, spinosity of the thorax and pygidium, more numerous glabellar furrows and reduction in number of thoracic segments. Olenus attenuatus has several features intermediate between those of earlier Olenus species and Parabolina, and the origin of the latter genus is best considered in terms of a mosaic paedomorphocline.

The stem tetrapod Eucritta melanolimnetes is described in full from five specimens. The animal is compared in detail with the contemporary and superficially similar temnospondyl Balanerpeton woodi, and with baphetids (=loxommatids). Growth of Eucritta skulls approaches isometry, and lies on the same trajectory as skulls belonging to the genus Baphetes. The function of the temporal embayment is discussed; it was probably not associated with an air-borne hearing device. The axial skeleton of Eucritta was ossified in larger specimens. Ribs in Eucritta gain expanded distal ends with growth, and the animal probably breathed by buccal pumping. An updated cladistic analysis is presented, incorporating data from a fifth specimen. Eucritta remains as a probable basal baphetid, but the sister group to the baphetids remains uncertain.

Detailed mapping of the Trallval-Ruinsival area of the ultrabasic complex of Rhum has revealed the relationship between the intrusive peridotites, which form a major part of the complex, and the layered ultrabasic rocks. The layered rocks on Trallval are correlated with Units 8 to 15 of the Eastern Layered Series as seen on Hallival and Askival, and part of an additional unit, Unit 16, has also been identified. The layered rocks of Ruinsival and the western part of Trallval form part of the Central Series and have been subdivided into six cyclic units. They are associated with four sets of intrusive breccia zones which converge towards a central region. Four cylindrical plugs of intrusive peridotite occur within the area of outcrop of the Central Series. Criteria are listed for the distinction of intrusive peridotite from conformable peridotites formed in situ. Distinctive textures and structures are described; these include vertical feldspathic streamers, which are interpreted as direct evidence for the upward expulsion of interstitial fluid, and loading structures at the contact between a peridotite layer and underlying allivalite are ascribed to the intrusion of a peridotite sill. A comparison of the Eastern Layered Series and the Central Series suggests that three stages were involved in the formation of the ultrabasic rocks: (i) the accretion of rhythmically layered unconsolidated olivine cumulates; (ii) the upward expulsion of intercumulus liquid; and (iii) the formation of either allivalite (as in the Eastern Layered Series) or ultrabasic breccia zones (as in the Central Series) from the expelled intercumulus liquid, depending on whether the tectonic environment was quiescent or extensional.

Silvanerpeton miripedes gen. et sp. nov. is a small gracile anthracosauroid. The holotype is an almost complete articulated specimen in black shale. Its anthracosaur characters include tabular-parietial contact, with a tabular horn and a moderate surangular crest indicating relationship with the embolomeres. It has gastrocentrous vertebrae with poorly ossified centra and neural arches, and the presacral vertebral count is estimated to be over 30. There are a number of apparently primitive characters as found in other anthracosauroids include a closed palate, mobile basal articulation, and an intertemporal. It differs from the other recognised species of anthracosaur at East Kirkton, Eldeceeon rolfei, in vertebral count, number of ribs, interclavicle shape, relative limb length, and in having an unossified tarsus, and a pedal phalangeal count of 23455.

Disarticulated bones from East Kirkton including large limb and vertebral elements may belong to this taxon, to Eldeceeon rolfei or to as yet unidentified taxa.

In 1926 a quantitative examination of the fauna of the intertidal sands in the Cumbrae, Firth of Clyde, was begun, and the results proved so interesting that it was decided to extend the survey to other parts of the Scottish coast, the object being to study the variation in density and composition of the fauna, with special reference to the two groups of molluscs and polychætes, from place to place, and at various levels on the beach. During the past two years observations have been made in three widely separated areas, namely, on the Ayrshire coast and Firth of Clyde, on the southern shore of the Moray Firth, and on the east coast of Scotland and in the Firth of Forth. In all, twenty-five bays or stretches of coast have been visited, and over one hundred and fifty quantitative collections worked through.

In the rare males of the polyploid race of Melanoides tuberculatus, which constitute about 3 per cent of the population, spermatogenesis has been studied in detail and compared with certain stages of spermatogenesis in the rare males of M. lineatus, which constitute 0·01 per cent of the population. The occurrence of the rare males in these parthenogenetic Melanoides provides an exceptional opportunity for studying the pairing behaviour of the chromosomes and for obtaining a better understanding of the probable nature of the polyploidy involved. During spermatogenesis, the two usual meiotic divisions occur, but the different stages show univalents, bivalents, quadrivalents and bridge fragment configurations. Degeneration of sex cells occurs at different stages, but mostly at the spermatid stage and the sterility of the rare males may be said to be chromosomal. The significance of the various abnormal meiotic phenomena is discussed and it is suggested that autoallopolyploidy is involved. A conjectural scheme of the possible origin of the autoallopolyploid M. tuberculatus is also suggested and the interrelationships between parthenogenesis, polyploidy and hybridity discussed.

The definition and scope of Ordovician genera of agnostid trilobites are discussed, and the generic affiliation of Ordovician species and well-illustrated material referred to in open nomenclature is assessed. Some 198 Ordovician species plus 25 species of uncertain latest Cambrian/earliest Ordovician age are enumerated, representing 24 genera and subgenera, of which Geragnostus (Novoagnostus) n.subg. and Lotagnostus (Semagnostus) n.subg. are new. Geragnostella is ranked as a subgenus of Geragnostus. The species of Arthrorhachis are tentatively divided among a tardus species group and an elspethi species group. Species of Dividuagnostus are divided among a sensu stricto group and an early species group. Pseudorhaptagnostus Lermontova, 1951 is restored as senior synonym of Neoagnostus Kobayashi, 1955. It is concluded that Ordovician agnostids were largely adapted to temperate and colder water habitats.

Detailed mapping and accurate levelling of fluvioglacial and raised marine features in the Forth Valley between Stirling and Burntisland show that the most conspicuous late-glacial raised beaches of this area are associated with the Perth Readvance and possess a marked gradient down the Forth Valley. The relation of the raised beaches to fluvioglacial deposits is described and discussed and this leads to the conclusion that the Perth Readvance resulted in a renewed downwarping of the land, the response to glacial loading and unloading being immediate and rapid.

The existing Cycads, with their nine genera and about eighty known species, represent the last lingering survivors of an ancient race that existed in Mesozoic times. There is very little evidence of their geological and geographical distribution throughout that great period; but it seems that up to the close of the Cretaceous they constituted an important feature of the Land Vegetation, with the Bennettitales, Ginkgoales, and Coniferales as their contemporaries. During that long period they were probably represented by many genera and species, and apparently enjoyed a very wide geographical distribution. The nature of their seed as an organ of reproduction seems to have endowed them with great powers of propagation and dissemination, which enabled them to spread over the earth and to occupy dry soils which probably had never before been occupied by Land Plants.

A sporomorph assemblage recovered from the Sandy's Creek Beds, which constitute a diminutive fault bounded inlier on the west coast of the Midland Valley of Scotland, is described. Four species of trilete spore and the genus Fustisispora, a monospecific cryptospore genus, are proposed as new. The sporomorph assemblage is attributed an early Devonian, late–early to early–late Lochkovian age, and is interpreted as accumulating in a continental environment. The Sandy's Creek Beds are correlated herein with the upper part of the Arbuthnott Group which crops out in the north-east of the Midland Valley. Comparison with other sporomorph assemblages of similar age indicates that minor regional variation exists. It is suggested that this is related to small-scale regional variation in the composition of vegetation.

Incomplete, but structurally preserved remains of an organism referable to the Nematophytales Lang, are described from the Rhynie Chert as a new genus and species. The fossil is composed of a plexus of non-septate tubular cells of two types—the smaller having uniformly smooth walls, the larger, walls with conspicuous spiral thickenings. Branching of both types is localized in areas referred to as branch-knots. Comparison is made with other members of the Nematophytales which have been shown to possess differentially thickened tubes.

The rheological and chemical behaviour of the lower crust during anatexis has been a major focus of geological investigations for many years. Modern studies of crustal evolution require significant knowledge, not only of the potential source regions for granites, but also of the transport paths and emplacement mechanisms operating during granite genesis. We have gained significant insights into the segregation and transport of granitoid melts from the results of experimental studies on rock behaviour during partial melting. Experiments performed on crustal rock cores under both hydrostatic conditions and during deformation have led, in part, to two conclusions. (1) The interfacial energy controlling melt distribution is anisotropic and, as a result, the textures deviate significantly from those predicted for ideal systems—planar solid-melt interfaces are developed in addition to triple junction melt pockets. The ideal dihedral angle model for melt distribution cannot be used as a constraint to predict melt migration in the lower crust. (2) The ‘critical melt fraction’ model, which requires viscous, granitic melt to remain in the source until melt fractions reach >25 vol%, is not a reliable model for melt segregation. The most recent experimental results on crustal rock cores which have helped advance our understanding of melt segregation processes have shown that melt segregation is controlled by several variables, including the depth of melting, the type of reaction and the volume change associated with that reaction. Larger scale processes such as tectonic environment determine the rate at which the lower crust heats and deforms, thus the tectonic setting controls the melt fraction at which segregation takes place, in addition to the pressure and temperature of the potential melting reactions. Melt migration therefore can occur at a variety of different melt fractions depending on the tectonic environment; these results have significant implications for the predicted geochemistry of the magmas themselves.

The life habit of Neseuretus is reconstructed on the basis of functional analysis and compared with that of other Calymenacea. Neseuretus, like all Calymenidae, was probably a filter feeder, burrowing downward into the sediment, where it rested hidden in a U-shaped attitude. Homalonotidae developed frontal burrowing and Bathycheilidae probably lived on the sediment. These calymenid families have different enrolment and behavioural patterns. Enrolment structures are developed, analysis of which leads to an understanding of phylogeny. Bathycheilidae maintained an unspecialised spiral enrolment. Flexicalymeninae and Calymeninae developed an advanced spiral enrolment, while a pseudosphaeroidal enrolment was achieved along independent lines in Kerfornellinae and Homalonotidae.

Ash-free-dry-weight determinations for a representative range of living brachiopod genera have revealed that a consistently high proportion of total organic mass is contained within the shell, partly as the organic matrix for biomineralisation and partly as minute extensions of the mantle tissues (caeca) housed within hollow endopunctae permeating the shell. On average 40% to 50% of the total organic mass of both articulate and inarticulate brachiopods is situated within the shell. This is true even for a rhynchonellid brachiopod which does not possess endopunctae, but which has a more dense protein matrix in its shell. The effectively hidden constituent of brachiopod tissue mass which is included in this component has often been overlooked, and as a result total metabolic tissue mass has been underestimated. This throws into question some previous interpretations of brachiopod respiratory and metabolic data.

The oxygen consumption rates of several living brachiopods have been measured, and when respiring tissue in caeca in the shell is taken into consideration, it is clear that brachiopod metabolic rates are low when compared with other marine invertebrates (e.g. between 10% and 50% of the oxygen uptake of comparable gastropods and bivalve molluscs held in similar conditions). This low rate cannot be attributed to a slower pumping rate by the brachiopod lophophore, as has been suggested, because the rate of water movement is comparable to that across the bivalve gill.

Nitrogen excretion rates have also been measured for a few living brachiopods, allowing a comparison with rates of oxygen consumption and providing an indication of the metabolic substrates used. These data on oxygen: nitrogen ratios suggest that one Antarctic brachiopod utilises exclusively protein as a metabolic substrate, while a temperate latitude species uses mainly protein during winter but lipids and carbohydrates during summer months. Histological observations, particularly of Terebratulina retusa from temperate waters, show that a specialised tissue layer in the brachiopod outer mantle epithelium proximal to the shell may be the site of storage of the protein that is metabolised during winter, and of carbohydrate mobilised during gonadal development in summer. The caeca have also been suggested as sites of storage of metabolites, and the possible relationships between these areas of mantle are discussed. It seems that the ability to store nutrients in the mantle, combined with flexibility of substrate utilisation and an inherently low metabolic rate, have been important factors in brachiopod evolution.

Late Yanshanian magmatism in SE China includes three stages of thermal event induced by the interaction between the continental margin of Eurasia and the paleo-Pacific plate during the Cretaceous period. Products of syn-orogenic magmatism (130–110 Ma) include high-Al gabbros (HAG), and gneissic tonalite, trondhjemite and granodiorite (TTG), which intruded into the deep basement (18–24 km). Rocks of the post- and an-orogenic magmatism are shallow-level (6–8 km) I-type granitoids (110–99 Ma), and miarolitic A-type granites plus rhyolite-dominate bimodal volcanics (94–81 Ma), respectively. Geochemically, HAG and TTG belong to the medium-K calc-alkaline affinity with high Sr/Y, whereas other granitoids are mainly high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic rocks with low Sr/Y. Sr and Nd isotope compositions suggest different sources of HAG and TTG from other rocks. Progressive depletions of Ba, Sr, Eu and P from I- to A-type granites reflect partial melting of felsic granulites from hydrous to dry conditions, whereas high Sr/Y in HAG and TTG are compatible with dehydration melting of amphibolites. Tectonic models which accommodate HAG and TTG may involve thickening of the lithosphere to convert the pre-existing lower-crust basic rocks into amphibolites. It was followed by basaltic underplating which is attributed to delamination of the thickened lithosphere and led to triggering of crust melting under exten

Approximately 10-15 vol% of the Neogene Hoyazo dacite consists of Al-rich restite rock inclusions (A12O3 = 20–45%) and monocrystal inclusions derived therefrom. Restite material and dacitic melt were formed syngenetically from a (semi-)pelitic rock sequence by means of anatexis. Restite rock fragments and dacite show similar high δ18O values (13–16‰) corresponding to those found for sedimentary material. Striking monocrystal restite inclusions in the dacite rock are graphite crystals measuring a few hundred μm, 0.5–10 mm blue cordierite crystals and 2–10 mm ruby red crystals of almandine-rich garnet (1.1 ± 0.2 vol%). Although the almandine crystals are perfectly euhedral, they are identical in every respect to the crystals found in the Al-rich restite rock inclusions and cannot be crystallisation products of the magmatic melt. The dacite also contains many inclusions of quartz gabbroic and basaltoid material which contains inclusions identical to the restite material found in the dacitic glass base. Many basaltoid inclusions show well-developed chilled borders. These inclusions may represent a more mafic magma of deeper origin which mixed with some dacite magma before mingling into it.

The K–Ar ages of 117 clay concentrates from samples associated with mineral deposits in Ireland indicate that most, if not all of the major ore deposits were formed during Carboniferous times or earlier. The Avoca orebodies are pre-400 Ma in age. Many of the vein deposits traversing Palaeozoic rocks were either formed or rejuvenated during the Hercynian orogeny c. 300 Ma ago. The SW Ireland Cu–Ba ores are 290 Ma old, and the major, frequently stratiform, base metal deposits stratabound in the Lower Carboniferous were, at least largely, formed during the Carboniferous period. In the case of the Navan orebody, an early Carboniferous age is indicated. Previous models invoking major mineralisations during Mesozoic or Tertiary times are rendered invalid. However, in some areas there appears to have been hydrothermal activity during the Triassic and possibly the Permian. The Triassic event is thought to be genetically related to coeval hydrothermal avtivity found throughout the N Atlantic regions. The data suggest that probably <10 km of cover has been removed from the majority of Ireland since Lower Carboniferous times. K–Ar dating of clays is shown to be a powerful method for constraining the ages of oredeposits.

Fossils have been known to occur in the early “post-Caledonian” sediments of Cowie Harbour, Stonehaven, for more than sixty years. Dr R. Campbell (1911, 1912 a, b, 1913) gave an account of the stratigraphy and recorded a number of fossils, including plant-fragments, arthropods (subsequently discussed by Steamer, 1934, 1935), and fishes (Traquair, 1912; Kiaer and Heintz, 1932 a; Heintz, 1939). The fossinferous “Dictyocaris-band,” exposed on the tidal foreshore, has been visited repeatedly by members of this department, who have collected a considerable quantity of fragmentary remains. During the last few years interesting new forms have been obtained by Dr F. H. Stewart, by the writer, and by senior and research students. Faunal lists and a discussion of the age of the beds occur later in this paper. The Dictyocaris-band outcrops also in the Tewel Burn. A cephalaspid scale from this section (Geol. Surv. Scot., T. 2738c and T. 2739c) is described below.
