Until recently the taxonomic and phylogenetic relationships of some of the Carboniferous plants in the two genera, Dactylotheca and Senftenbergia, could not be defined with any clear degree of certainty. The main reason for this was that workers who had investigated these types had failed to reveal some of their most important structural features. In the past, therefore, it has been impossible with the information available to make adequate comparisons of the types included in these genera. In a previous paper the writer (1938) showed that one at least of the three species of Dactylotheca really belonged to the genus Senftenbergia, and demonstrated that it possessed several Schizæaceous characteristics indicating its alliance with the living ferns of that family. In the present work, an analysis of the structural features of the two remaining species of Dactylotheca, and of one species of Senftenbergia has been made. These three plants are Dactylotheca Sturi Sterzel pro. var., Dactylotheca parallela Kidston, and Senftenbergia pennœformis Brongniart. The experiments on the compressions of D. parallela, however, indicate quite clearly that the plant does not belong to either the genus Dactylotheca or Senftenbergia. Its fructifications were found to be of the nature of synangia and were exannulate. Of these two features, the former removes it from Dactylotheca, and the latter prevents it from being classed within Senftenbergia. For this reason D. parallela cannot be included in the Schizæaceæ, and, therefore, the analysis of its structural features is not recorded in this paper.

Scotland has a magmatic record covering much of the period 3100–50 Ma. In this review, we pull together information on Scotland's igneous rocks into a continuous story, showing how magmatic activity has contributed to the country's structural development and assessing whether the effects of older magmatic events can be recognised in later episodes.

The oldest igneous rocks are part of supracrustal sequences within the Lewisian Gneiss Complex, formed when Scotland was part of the supercontinent Kenorland. The supracrustal rocks were intruded between 3100 and 2800 Ma by granodiorites and tonalites, which were metamorphosed and deformed in a major tectonothermal event between 2700 and 2500 Ma. The break-up of Kenorland (2400–2200 Ma) was marked by the intrusion of mafic dyke swarms of tholeiitic affinity. The convergence of continental masses to form the supercontinent Columbia resulted, at ∼1900 Ma, in a series of subduction-related volcanic rocks and gabbro–anorthosite masses. Subsequent continent–continent collision formed a series of granite–pegmatite sheets at ∼1855 Ma and ∼1675 Ma and reworked much of the earlier rocks in the amphibolite facies. Columbia was breaking up by 1200 Ma, an event marked by remnants of basaltic magmatism in the NW of the country. Re-assembly of the continental fragments to form the supercontinent Rodinia resulted in the Grenville Orogeny, which in Scotland was marked by basement reworking but no confirmed magmatic activity. Early attempts to split Rodinia produced a rift-related, bimodal, mafic–felsic sequence in the Moine Supergroup of the Northern Highlands, at least some of the mafic rocks having mid-ocean ridge basalt affinities. Crustal thickening during a disputed orogenic event, the Knoydartian, may have caused regional migmatisation. The final break-up of Rodinia occurred in Scotland at ∼600 Ma, when very extensive tholeiitic magmatism characterised the later parts of the Dalradian Supergroup, while a series of granites intruded the Moine and Dalradian successions.

Ordovician and Silurian times saw the closure of the Iapetus Ocean and the convergence of Laurentia, Avalonia and Baltica. The collision of a major arc system with Laurentia caused the Grampian event (480–465 Ma) of the Caledonian Orogeny, marked by ophiolite obduction, the generation of (largely) anatectic granites, volcanism in the Midland Valley and Southern Uplands, and intrusion of a major gabbro–granite suite in the NE. The late-Caledonian events (435–420 Ma) were largely post-collisional and were marked by the emplacement of alkaline igneous intrusions in the NW, calc-alkaline granitic intrusions over much of the country, widespread volcanic activity and regional dyke swarms. Laurentia, Avalonia and Baltica amalgamated to form the supercontinent Laurussia. Magmatic activity recommenced at 350 Ma, when intra-plate alkaline magmatism affected much of southern Scotland, in particular, through into Permian times. The alkaline magmatism was interrupted at ∼295 Ma by a short-lived event in which tholeiitic magmas were intruded as sills and dykes in a swarm ∼200 km wide. In the early Palaeogene, lithospheric attenuation related to proto-North Atlantic formation and the splitting of Pangaea was complemented by the arrival of the Iceland mantle plume. Huge volumes of mafic magma were emplaced as lava fields, central complexes and regional swarms, locally increasing crustal thickness by 30%

Foraminiferal, algal and problematica assemblages from the Mississippian (late Viséan and early Serpukhovian) Lower Limestone Formation have been studied in order to validate lithostratigraphical correlations of limestones within the central and western parts of the Midland Valley of Scotland. Analysis of more than 100 outcrops allows recognition of four calcareous microfossil assemblages, which span the late Brigantian and early Pendleian, and enables a detailed correlation to be made within the Central Coalfield (north Lanarkshire) and with the thinner sequences to the west (north Ayrshire), to the south (Douglas area, south Lanarkshire), and to the east (Bathgate area, West Lothian). The age of the Lower Limestone Formation is modified because the upper part of this formation is now assigned to the Pendleian (due to the first occurrences of new foraminiferans and the co-occurrence with the Namurian goniatites), and some individual limestone horizons within the formation are repositioned, or their precise correlation with other limestones is established. A refined stratigraphical framework is proposed for the above noted areas, and a correlation between them and the Pennine region in northern England is proposed, passing through the Archerbeck Borehole sequence in the Scottish Borders.

Anatomically preserved plants are recorded from calcareous nodules and include Lepidodendron calamopsoides Long which demonstrate for the first time the presence of anisotomous branching, in addition to the normal isotomous branching and details of the stele and the cortex seen in longitudinal section. The nodules also contain Setispora subpaleocristatus (Alvin) Spinner and Lagenicula crassiaculeata Zerndt megaspores. There is an abundant compression flora. Compressions and petrifactions of Tristichia ovensi Long may not represent the same plant and may not be connected to Stamnostoma huttonense Long. We suggest that the compressions of T. ovensi were of a pteridospermous plant with unlaminated fronds bearing small uncupulate seeds and lateral clusters of microsporangiate organs of a new type.

This study was begun in 1936 primarily as an attempt to work out the life-history of the Salmon gill-maggot Salmincola salmonea (L.), a common and widespread copepod parasite of the Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar). At that time the adult female stage only was known, although this had been reported in Scotland as early as 1766 on a kelt salmon and had been included by Linnæus among his Vermes. It was not, however, until 1939, after three years of field work, that a complete series of the stages in the life-history of the parasite had been collected and the story began to take shape. During this time not only were parasites collected, but a quantity of statistical and observational data was accumulated bearing both on the parasite.and its host. Much of this referred to conditions in the estuary, a part of the common background of the two animals which was soon recognised to be a critical region for both. Consequently special attention was given to parasitised fish from this region, and this led to a widening of the scope of the investigation to include a consideration of the habitats and interrelations of gill-maggot and fish, indicated by the term “ecology” in the title.

Magnetic observations made at the same site give valuable information about the time changes (the secular variation) of the geomagnetic field. This paper gives details of all known measurements of the geomagnetic field in and around Edinburgh since the earliest observation of magnetic declination (the difference between true and magnetic north) by George Sinclair in 1670. Early observations of the strength of the field were only relative measurements. Approximate conversion factors are derived to enable these data to be expressed in modern absolute units (nanoteslas). Observed values of declination, inclination and the horizontal intensity of the geomagnetic field are plotted and compared with values computed from mathematical models of the field covering the interval 1690 to 1990, inclusive. The earlier observations were not corrected for the effects of the rapidly varying magnetic fields caused by electric currents in the upper atmosphere. The consequences of this are estimated.

Tealliocaris is probably one of the best preserved of all Carboniferous crustaceans. It occurs scattered through the 12 cm thick laminated Gullane ‘shrimp-bed’. The cuticle is exceptionally well preserved and the specimens, which are normally complete, are infilled with fluorapatite. The carapace has an elongate rostrum, a defined frontal area, a median ridge and paired gastric and inner and outer lateral ridges. The eyes are borne on a stout peduncle. The first antenna bears a pair of flagella, the second an antennal scale and long flagellum. The mandible is large and heavily sclerotised with molar and incisor process. The maxillae and anterior thoracopods are poorly preserved. The posterior six thoracopods each have a long segmented endopod and annulated setose exopod. More than half the specimens preserve lamellae which may represent branchial epipods, or floor a brood chamber beneath the carapace on either side of the thorax. The pleopods are biramous. The telson and uropods form a tail fan. In the absence of oostegites Tealliocaris cannot be assigned to the order Mysidacea but its affinities lie close to these Eumalacostraca. Tealliocaris walked on the thoracic endopods, but could also swim using the pleopods and thoracic exopods. The mode of feeding is uncertain. Tealliocaris probably inhabited a brackish lake or lagoon, but its distribution elsewhere suggests that it may have been tolerant of a range of salinities.

A phylogenetic analysis is performed on all species previously assigned to the odontopleurid trilobite genus Leonaspis. The PAUP analysis shows this genus, as conventionally defined, to be polyphyletic, composed of four groups of equal taxonomie rank. Leonaspis (s.s.) is here restricted to one of these groups only, a monophyletic set of species characterised by ‘four-spined’ pygidia (i.e. with four spines between the major border spines) and a thorax of nine segments. Kettneraspis is recognised for the largest of these four groups, and is composed of ‘two-spined’ species with nine thoracic segments. Leonaspis and Kettneraspis belong to the Odontopleurinae. A third group of previous ‘Leonaspis’ species constitute a new genus of the Acidaspidinae. Its species are characterised by being ‘four-spined’ and having ten thoracic segments. For these the new genus Exallaspis is erected, with type species E. bufo. A fourth group of ‘Leonaspis’ species, being ‘four-spined’ with nine thoracic segments, belongs to Eoleonaspis, an Ordovician odontopleurine genus. Leonaspis and Exallaspis are temporally and spatially non-overlapping, Leonaspis being exclusively Gondwanan post-Wenlock, whereas Exallaspis is restricted to areas north of the Rheic Ocean and ranges from basal Llandovery to Ludlow. Kettneraspis is pandemic. The condition of five epiborder spines and ten border spines on the free cheek is proposed as plesiomorphic for odontopleurids, and the border spines are shown to originate as two separate rows with alternating spines. A shift in position of the facial suture is shown to transfer the genal spine from the cranidium to the free cheek in Kettneraspis meraspides of degree 1 or 2, and the previously suggested co-occurrence of a fixigenal and librigenal spine in these stages is refuted. Earlier proposed dimorphism is rejected, and two mechanisms for reduction in the number of pygidial border spines are proposed. Kettneraspis reetae sp. nov. is described.

The Lower Cambrian Sirius Passet fauna from Peary Land, North Greenland, is a rich repository of soft-bodied and poorly-sclerotised fossils. A new arthropod from the fauna, Kleptothule rasmusseni, is described. The animal is broadly trilobite-like, possessing a trilobed exoskeleton which is divided into distinct cephalic, thoracic and caudal regions. However, it is unusual in that it possesses a large number of segments, and demonstrates pronounced cephalic segmentation, and a very narrow cephalon and thorax. There is some evidence that the exoskeleton was lightly mineralised.

Kleptothule is compared to some of the olenellimd trilobites, especially those taxa that possess a many-segmented ‘opisthothorax’. Its morphology raises some issues discussed by Lauterbach (1983) in his assignment of some olenellids to the stem-group of the chelicerates. However, it is not considered herein that such a model can be supported. A complete analysis of basal trilobites and the stem-group leading to them must await a fuller description of key taxa from China and Greenland.

Two pairs of detached fossil cupules from the Cementstone Group of the East Lothian coast are described. One pair (specimen 1) contains 16 ovules agreeing with the seed genus Hydrasperma Long as well as 8 microsporangia containing spores. The second pair (specimen 2) has neither ovules nor microsporangia.

The ovules present in specimen 1 have about 9 free apical tentacles and as many longitudinal ridges on the bodies of the ovules. The central column is very well developed, about as long as the ovule body and obconical in shape. In it some of the cells have bars of thickening on the walls like transfusion cells. Each cupule-pair has a common stalk which divides to become the two inverted cupules. In specimen 1 each cupule has a wall consisting of two valves united above but subdivided into tapering lobes below, i.e. distally. Ovules are borne below the concave upper region of each cupule (sessile laminar placentation). In this specimen each cupule-valve is subdivided into two smaller portions, one of which bears 8 microsporangia. The latter appear to be terminal and reflexed and almost sessile.

The laminar placentation in Hydrasperma supports the view that this type of placentation in angiosperms is primitive and the bisexual cupule-pair here described suggests that the primitive fertile fronds from which cupules (and presumably carpels) evolved were originally capable of bearing both mega- and microsporangia.

Scorpions from East Kirkton Quarry are represented by abundant cuticle fragments and rarer articulated specimens. Cuticles isolated from their matrix are exquisitely preserved, permitting this fauna to be described in more detail than other Carboniferous scorpion faunas. Most of the material is attributed to Pulmonoscorpius kirktonensis n. gen. n. sp. Specimens possibly indicating the presence of two additional Pulmonoscorpius species are referred to under open nomenclature. Rare fragments of an aquatic ‘archaeoctonoid’, and an orthostern scorpion, also occur. Most specimens of Pulmonoscorpius are juveniles. The range of taphonomic effects observed in these and larger individuals suggests that, as a consequence of poor preservation, the morphology of some Upper Palaeozoic scorpions has been misinterpreted by previous workers. Within the infraorder Mesoscorpionina two groups are recognised. These are distinguished by the position of the posterior pair of coxae. Pulmonoscorpius n. gen. belongs to group A, in which the posterior coxae abut the sternum. This group includes the known Lower Carboniferous mesoscorpions and ranges from the Upper Devonian to the Upper Carboniferous. All group-A mesoscorpions are reviewed here. In group-B mesoscorpions the posterior pair of coxae apparently abut the genital opercula, but confirmation of this derived character and formal taxonomic recognition of these groupings must await a restudy of the group-B mesoscorpions, which are known from the Upper Carboniferous and Triassic.

Felsic and related veins within mantle-derived peridotite xenoliths from Tallante, Spain, were examined in order to understand the mantle-wedge processes related to the behaviour of Si-rich melt. The thickest part of the vein has a quartz diorite lithology, and is composed mainly of quartz and plagioclase, with pyroxenes, hydrous mineral, apatite, zircon and rutile present as minor phases. The thinner parts are free of quartz and predominantly composed of plagioclase. Orthopyroxene always intervenes between the internal part (plagioclase ± quartz) and host peridotite, indicating that it is a product of interaction between silica-oversaturated melt and olivine. This indicates that a sufficiently high melt/wall rock ratio enabled the melt to retain its silicaoversaturated character.

The quartz diorite part has adakite-like geochemical signatures, except for negative Ba, Rb Eu and Sr anomalies, and positive Th and U anomalies. These negative anomalies indicate that fractionation of plagioclase and hydrous minerals was achieved between the upper most mantle and the slab melting zone. The shape of the rare-earth element (REE) pattern of clinopyroxene in quartz diorite is strikingly similar to that of clinopyroxene phenocrysts from Aleutian adakites. However, the former has one order higher REE contents than the latter, except for Eu which shows a prominent negative spike. This feature was caused by the precipitation of large amounts of plagioclase and small amounts of clinopyroxene from a fractionated adakitic melt before and during solidification. This adakitic melt was produced by partial melting of a detached and sinking slab beneath the Betic area in the Tertiary.

The present paper embodies the results of an investigation into the glacial phenomena of the Southern Uplands of Scotland, west of Annandale and Upper Clydesdale.

The literature dealing with the glaciation of this extensive region is very meagre. Apart from the Memoirs of the Geological Survey of Scotland, only a few and scattered papers and occasional references bear upon the subject. These will be noted in the course of the paper as occasion arises.

The Lower Carboniferous of northern Britain is dominated by non-marine sequences which yield fish and crustacean faunas. These are rarely preserved and occur in thin layers. The sedimentology of twelve shrimp-bearing localities is described, in most cases for the first time, to shed light upon the habitats occupied by eumalacostracan crustaceans during their early Carboniferous adaptive radiation. Nearly all these sequences were deposited in coastal delta-plain settings or in interdistributary bays, environments of transitional salinity. The Gullane shrimp bed, however, was laid down in a thermally stratified non-marine lake, and its sole crustacean representative, Tealliocaris, seems to have been generally confined to waters of low salinity. None of the shrimp-beds was deposited in a fully marine environment, though most show evidence of at least some marine influence. Crustacean diversity increases with salinity, and the lack of shrimps in fully marine sediments is largely due to taphonomic factors rather than an environmental control.

Detailed mapping of the Trallval-Ruinsival area of the ultrabasic complex of Rhum has revealed the relationship between the intrusive peridotites, which form a major part of the complex, and the layered ultrabasic rocks. The layered rocks on Trallval are correlated with Units 8 to 15 of the Eastern Layered Series as seen on Hallival and Askival, and part of an additional unit, Unit 16, has also been identified. The layered rocks of Ruinsival and the western part of Trallval form part of the Central Series and have been subdivided into six cyclic units. They are associated with four sets of intrusive breccia zones which converge towards a central region. Four cylindrical plugs of intrusive peridotite occur within the area of outcrop of the Central Series. Criteria are listed for the distinction of intrusive peridotite from conformable peridotites formed in situ. Distinctive textures and structures are described; these include vertical feldspathic streamers, which are interpreted as direct evidence for the upward expulsion of interstitial fluid, and loading structures at the contact between a peridotite layer and underlying allivalite are ascribed to the intrusion of a peridotite sill. A comparison of the Eastern Layered Series and the Central Series suggests that three stages were involved in the formation of the ultrabasic rocks: (i) the accretion of rhythmically layered unconsolidated olivine cumulates; (ii) the upward expulsion of intercumulus liquid; and (iii) the formation of either allivalite (as in the Eastern Layered Series) or ultrabasic breccia zones (as in the Central Series) from the expelled intercumulus liquid, depending on whether the tectonic environment was quiescent or extensional.

Cytological results are presented for 60 taxa of Jamaican ferns which supplement information obtained from an earlier survey (Walker 1966). A number of hybrids which form local populations and which may be mistaken for fertile species are described and illustrated. Some species complexes are examined and shown to be more extensive than previously thought. The results presented here are examined in the light of the findings of the earlier survey.

The early Tertiary Mull-Morvern lava succession, NW Scotland, represents the thickest continuous section (1000 m from sea level to the top of Ben More) of Tertiary lavas exposed in the UK. This succession has been sampled and geochemically analysed, on a flow-by-flow basis, throughout the lava succession. Field observations during the course of this sampling suggest that the early lava flows (the Staffa Magma sub-Type) ponded in palaeovalleys along with interlava sediments. In the main part of the Mull lava succession (the Mull Plateau Group) the lava flows are on average ∼ 5 m thick. Most previous Hebridean workers have assumed that the red horizons commonly found between these later lava flows, represent weathered flow tops. However, this study has shown that in some places these red ‘boles’ appear to be a combination of both volcanic ash and weathered basalt.

Chemically distinctive units of flows have been found throughout the succession. The two most abundant magma sub-types of the Mull Plateau Group, primitive (>9wt% MgO) basalts with Ba/Nb» 15 and more evolved (<9wt% MgO) basalts-hawaiites with Ba/Nb<15, form packets of flow units which can be up to 200 m thick. These chemically distinctive flow units have been correlated across the lava succession. However, the correlation of individual lava flows has proved difficult. The Mull Plateau Group lavas generally become more evolved and less contaminated with continental crust towards the top of the succession, culminating in the trachytes of the Pale Group on Ben More. Basaltic lavas above the Pale Group have markedly different trace element ratios, and seem to represent shallower, more extensive asthenospheric melting than the Mull Plateau Group.

From a biological point of view considerable interest must always attend any investigation of the earliest known organisms, and, although we may legitimately infer that a flora and fauna existed prior to Cambrian times, the organisms preserved for us in rocks of that age constitute, at present, the first chapter of palæontological history. For this reason alone the Archæocyathinæ are important, since they form part of the Lower Cambrian fauna. When, however, we consider that the genera included in the group are very distinct from one another (indicating that the family was probably of considerable antiquity even in those early times), that the types have, as far as we know, a wide geographical distribution, and that to certain skeletal characters usually associated with the Porifera they unite others more common among the Cœlenterata, interest is still further stimulated. On the other hand, although recorded in great abundance from several widely separated localities, they are not, as a rule, common fossils in Cambrian strata, and consequently the group has not received much attention.

Silvanerpeton miripedes gen. et sp. nov. is a small gracile anthracosauroid. The holotype is an almost complete articulated specimen in black shale. Its anthracosaur characters include tabular-parietial contact, with a tabular horn and a moderate surangular crest indicating relationship with the embolomeres. It has gastrocentrous vertebrae with poorly ossified centra and neural arches, and the presacral vertebral count is estimated to be over 30. There are a number of apparently primitive characters as found in other anthracosauroids include a closed palate, mobile basal articulation, and an intertemporal. It differs from the other recognised species of anthracosaur at East Kirkton, Eldeceeon rolfei, in vertebral count, number of ribs, interclavicle shape, relative limb length, and in having an unossified tarsus, and a pedal phalangeal count of 23455.

Disarticulated bones from East Kirkton including large limb and vertebral elements may belong to this taxon, to Eldeceeon rolfei or to as yet unidentified taxa.

The type material of Chasmataspis laurencii Caster & Brooks, 1956 (Chelicerata: Chasmataspidida) from the Middle Ordovician (Tremadoc to Caradoc) of Sevier County, Tennessee, USA, is redescribed, and comparisons are drawn with recently discovered Devonian chasmataspids from Scotland, Germany and Russia. The depositional setting of the C. laurencii fossils is reinterpreted as an ash fall into shallow marine/tidal sediments. Chasmataspis laurencii confirms the presence of 13 opisthosomal segments in Chasmataspidida, a character of unresolved polarity. The phylogenetic position ofC. laurencii is difficult to resolve. A monophyletic Chasmataspidida has one convincing autapomorphy in the nine-segmented postabdomen, but C. laurencii shares a number of characters with xiphosurans (i.e. cardiac lobe, pre-abdomen with axial region, biramous and chelate limbs), while the Devonian taxa more closely resemble eurypterids (i.e. through pediform limbs and a genital appendage). Earlier interpretations of the respiratory system in C. laurencii appear unconvincing in the light of new evidence from Devonian forms with opisthosomal opercula. Resting impressions of a Chasmataspis-like animal from the Upper Cambrian Hickory Sandstone of Texas, USA, also appear to show evidence of opercula. These Texan fossils could represent the oldest record of Euchelicerata. Two chasmataspid families are recognised, and C. laurencii is placed in the monotypic Chasmataspididae Caster & Brooks, 1956, redefined here on the fused pre-abdominal buckler with an axial region and the narrow, elongate post-abdomen ending in a long, lanceolate telson.
