The main sources of the style of contemporary philosophy, sources which run counter to the style of classical philosophy, come together in the intellectual development and works of Jean-Paul Sartre. In him can be seen the styles of Hegel, Kierkegaard, Marx, Nietzsche, Heidegger, and perhaps even of Wittgenstein. Sartre's L'être et le néant was one focal point of these influences. A re-evaluation of Marx is characteristic of his later works. Marx's philosophical theory is more than just a theory:

… it was not the idea which unsettled us; nor was it the condition of the worker, which we knew abstractly but which we had not experienced. No, it was the two joined together. It was—as we would have said then in our idealist jargon even as we were breaking with idealism—the Proletariat as the incarnation and vehicle of an idea.

The title of Sartre's Critique de la raison dialectique evokes, quite intentionally, memories of Kant's critiques of reason. Let us compare the two undertakings. Kant circumscribed the knowledge claimed by the natural sciences of his time. He pointed out that science never grasps more than the appearance of things as conditioned by our cognitive processes; it cannot know the thing-in-itself. Sartre, for his part, circumscribes the knowledge claimed by orthodox Marxism. He agrees that Marxist economic theory understands the general course of contemporary historical developments, but not the dynamics of those developments. Both authors concede no more than a limited validity in deterministic ontology, in the one case to the exact sciences, in the other to Marxism. Nevertheless, both recognize fully the content of the knowledge they are criticizing, but explain it at the result or product respectively of deeper causes. A transcendental investigation is supposed to bring these causes to light. Kant's critique of scientific reason was directed at the interplay between the presumed thing in itself and the viewing, thinking self—the interplay that yeilds objectively-cognizable Nature. Sartre's critique of dialectical reason tries to show that the interaction between individual human activity and an always scarce supply of material things is the source of all social and cultural forms and events. In both works, then, the human subject is a determining factor in what appears to be objectively factual.

The growing commitment of Jean-Paul Sartre to Marxist political philosophy reaches its maturation in his Critique de la raison dialectique. To many in the non-Communist world, particularly in North America, who have been influenced by his earlier existential philosophy, Sartre's commitment to Marxism seems difficult to explain. Existentialism is a philosophy of individual introspection, whereas Marxism is a philosophy of mass movements. Existentialism denies the reality of absolute values, whereas Marxism postulates the supreme goal of the classless society. Most puzzling of all, the existential philosophy of Sartre himself describes a radical freedom, the negation of all determinism in the lives of human beings; while Marxism is traditionally viewed, both by its proponents and by its critics, as a doctrine of strict determinism.

La vie des doctrines philosophico-politiques est mystérieuse, mais il semble que, sous les interprétations, les passions et les intérêts qu'elles provoquent, elles tendent à se simplifier en une scolastique académique, c'est-à-dire en un squelette décharné par la suppression de toute nuance et de toute contradiction féconde. Cette tendance apparaît particulièrement révélatrice du destin de la pensée de Karl Marx, laquelle entre toutes bouleverse les intérêts et provoque l'affrontement des passions — le marxisme s'est trop souvent laissé réduire à des mottos d'action et à des slogans de propagande favorables ou non qui ont sans doute mystifié nombre d'analystes. Il en est résulté, me semble-t-il, tant chez les adversaires que chez les marxistes orthodoxes, une caricature vulgaire qui a réduit l'étonnante complexité de Marx à un économisme rigide et plat.

Prenons comme point de départ de notre recherche l'affirmation du P. G. Fessard selon laquelle il n'y a pas de place pour «l'historique» dans le thomisme. Si nous nous en rapportons en effet à la Métaphysique d'Aristote commentée par S. Thomas, il semblerait n'y avoir que deux grandes catégories d'être: l'être de raison étudié par la logique, et l'être naturel, sujet de la philosophie. Où situer alors, dans une telle perspective, l'être historique, terre d'élection de la pensée moderne, selon l'expression du P. Fessard? Nulle part … c'est-à-dire que cet horizon demeure étranger à un tel type de philosophie.

Il est triste mais néanmoins vrai que Russell est passé à l'Histoire de la Philosophie, qu'il est démodé alors qu'il est encore si plein de vie. Aujourd'hui, nous attribuons une valeur restreinte à une petite partie seulement de cet héritage considerable, et cette partie elle-même est souvent dénigrée. Je fais allusion, bien entendu, à la théorie des descriptions définies qui, malgré les gaucheries de jeunesse dans On Denoting et les tendances métaphysiques de l'âge mûr, demeure encore, sous une forme ou sous une autre, dans les travaux de philosophes tels que Quine.

Dans un article intitulé l'Avenir de la littérature, Onimus écrit: « Nous sommes entrés—pour la première fois sans doute dans l'histoire de l'humanité—dans une société où la poésie en tant que genre littéraire est ignorée ou considérée comme une activité bizarre, quelque chose d'entièrement désuet, de ridicule, voire de dangereux, à la limite de l'aliénation ».

Il dit bien. L'orientation du public actuel est un phénomène inédit qui invite à réfléchir. Et de fait, l'auteur fournit à cette attitude trois raisons pénétrantes. D'abord, le cinéma draine à lui les grands créateurs; les Mémoires ensuite provoquent de l'engouement; la vie trépidante enfin tient en horreur la rhétorique, les fleurs et les figures. À ces causes, il faut ajouter les manifestes impatients qui lancent le poète à la conquête des sons, au mépris de la forme, au triomphe de l'absurde et lui font produire des œuvres qui ne sauraient retenir l'attention.

This slender volume contains notes, kept by some of those who were present, of lectures on aesthetics and religious belief, and of conversations with Rush Rhees concerning Freud. The lectures were given informally by Wittgenstein at Cambridge in 1938; the conversations took place between 1942 and 1946. Wittgenstein neither wrote down nor saw the material here presented, but the editor reports that the versions of lecture notes by different students agree to a remarkable extent.

Despite the varying authorships and intervals of time during which these Lectures and Conversations took place, the book is a surprisingly integrated whole and not simply a miscellany. What seems to unite its three topics and their treatment is Wittgenstein's examination of the kind of evidence upon which each of the three disciplines (Aesthetics, Psychoanalysis, Religious Belief) have tended to rely—his argument being that 1) Psychoanalysis has tended to rest on insufficient evidence; 2) Aesthetics on the wrong kind of evidence; and 3) Religious Belief on the false notion that it is a matter of evidence when this is not at all the case.
