Le mot « idéologie » n'a pas été inventé par Marx. Il était d'usage fréquent au début du XlXème siècle, en France.

C'est ainsi qu'on le trouve dans Stendhal, qui le tenait lui-même de Cabanis, médecin et matérialiste du XVIIIème siècle, continuateur de la tendance matérialiste issue de Descartes dans son ouvrage « Rapport du physique et du moral chez l'homme ». Il s'employait alors dans un sens plutôt élogieux pour désigner les philosophes qui s'efforçaient d'analyser l'origine et la formation des idées chez l'être humain. Ainsi Condillac, dans son « Essai sur l'origine des connaissances humaines », développa la pensée de Locke et démontra que, non seulement l'âme, mais aussi les sens—non seulement l'art de fabriquer les idées, mais aussi l'art de la perception sensible—sont affaire d'expérience et d'habitude. C'est de l'éducation et des circonstances extérieures que dépend tout le développement de l'homme. En d'autres termes, Condillac s'efforçait d'expliquer toutes les idées à partir des sensations de l'individu humain, par les combinaisons de ces sensations et les associations habituelles entre elles; c'était un « sensualiste » et un « idéologue ».

Une des façons de demander ce qu'est la philosophie est de demander simplement « qu'appelle-t-on penser ». Car en un sens, la philosophie n'est que la pensée prenant pleine conscience d'elle-même. Le fait que deux penseurs hautement originaux, suivant pourtant des chemins indépendants, révèlent de frappantes similitudes dans leur réponse à cette question, peut apparaître comme une confirmation de l'authenticité de leur pensée respective.

Self-knowledge is a permanent and necessary aim for man. By ‘self-knowledge’ I mean the knowledge of oneself as a human being; the understanding of what it is to be a human being; the grasp of human nature as such. There are many sides to this knowledge: the sciences and social sciences, the arts, history, reflexion on day-to-day experience. Philosophy has traditionally been seen as a road that can lead towards self-knowledge. What I propose here is an essay in the philosophy of self-knowledge. It is a study of one aspect of human nature among others, namely human embodiment.

In a deservedly esteemed paper, Donald Davidson has argued “that rationalization [that is, the explanation of an action in terms of reasons, in the sense in which “the reason explains the action by giving the agent's reason for doing what he did”] is a species of ordinary causal explanation” (685). Davidson himself, of course, in putting his own view forward, knowingly opposes a relatively widespread tendency to deny the thesis. I wish, in turn, to attempt to redeem the doctrine that there is a difference between explanation by causes and explanation by reasons, but I find that it cannot be done, so to speak, by reversing the clock: Davidson's arguments are very telling and the defence of the distinction must, I believe, support a significantly diminished claim. So, for example, I think we must go the distance with Davidson in admitting that “to describe an event in terms of its cause is not to identify the event with its cause, [and that] explanation by redescription … [does not] exclude causal explanation” (685); also, that there is no convincing reason “why on earth … a cause [should] turn an action into a mere happening and a person into a helpless victim” (700).

Questions about universal and exclusive terms have often arisen in the history of philosophy, and are connected with what, in more recent discussions, has been variously called the principle of “excluded opposites”, “polar opposites” or “non-vacuous contrasts”. This principle has been employed by a number of linguistically-minded philosophers and has in turn been criticized by other philosophers. These critics are, I believe, largely correct, but they have advanced their criticisms in a mainly informal way, making little reference to logic. I want to show that there are various types of universal and exclusive terms which can be classified in a logically rigorous way, and to go on to show that reference to this classification, together with an analysis of relevant examples, enables us to bring out precisely what is wrong with “the principle of excluded opposites”.

Je ferai porter ces quelques réflexions sur les difficultés et l'importance de l'enseignement de la philosophie Pour situer le rôle du philosophe, je caractériserai d'abord à larges traits le contexte culturel dans lequel se situe le problème de la crise de las philosophie et de la crise de l'enseignement de la philosophie. Ce contexte est d'abord celui de notre société québécoise. Notre société depuis quelques années est sortie d'un long sommeil qui nous gardait à l'écart de l'histoire, repliés sur nous-mêmes dans une attitude défensive de fuite de la réalité. Ce qui caractérise ce réveil, c'est la volonté d'identification de l'homme canadien-français. La donnée fondamentale de ces dernières années, c'est ce cheminement obscur vers la vérité de nous-mêmes à travers la médiation et la promotion du groupe national. Avant d'être crise constitutionnelle ou économique ou sociale, la crise qui nous secoue concerne la perception profonde de nous-mêmes. Nous cherchons à tâtons ce que nous sommes du plus profond de notre ètre historique; nous luttons contre de fausses identifications de nous-mêmes pour libérer la source créatrice de notre destin en commun.

Several difficulties that accompany Plato's theory of Forms have received considerable attention in the philosophical literature in the past half century. A great deal of discussion and controversy surrounds the dialogue Parmenides and the group of considerations commonly called the “Third Man Argument”. Our purpose here is to strike out in one direction suggested by this passage (Parmenides 132 a-b, 132 d), but it can in no way be thought of as an exegesis nor a logical elucidation of the “Third Man Argument” itself. While what we shall say here has an obvious affinity and connection with the Parmenides passage, the two principal questions that concern us here are of a more general nature than the specific points in the Parmenides. The first is whether Plato's theory of Forms involves a regress which is ruinous to the theory. The second is, if a self-destructive regress is a necessary consequence of the theory, what elements of Plato's theory make the regress inescapable.
