In this work we prove the so-called dimension property for the cohomological field theory associated with a homogeneous polynomial $W$ with an isolated singularity, in the algebraic framework of [A. Polishchuk and A. Vaintrob, Matrix factorizations and cohomological field theories, J. Reine Angew. Math. 714 (2016), 1–122]. This amounts to showing that some cohomology classes on the Deligne–Mumford moduli spaces of stable curves, constructed using Fourier–Mukai-type functors associated with matrix factorizations, live in prescribed dimension. The proof is based on a homogeneity result established in [A. Polishchuk and A. Vaintrob, Algebraic construction of Witten’s top Chern class, in Advances in algebraic geometry motivated by physics (Lowell, MA, 2000) (American Mathematical Society, Providence, RI, 2001), 229–249] for certain characteristic classes of Koszul matrix factorizations of $0$ . To reduce to this result, we use the theory of Fourier–Mukai-type functors involving matrix factorizations and the natural rational lattices in the relevant Hochschild homology spaces, as well as a version of Hodge–Riemann bilinear relations for Hochschild homology of matrix factorizations. Our approach also gives a proof of the dimension property for the cohomological field theories associated with some quasihomogeneous polynomials with an isolated singularity.

We give a large family of weighted projective planes, blown up at a smooth point, that do not have finitely generated Cox rings. We then use the method of Castravet and Tevelev to prove that the moduli space $\overline{M}_{0,n}$ of stable $n$-pointed genus-zero curves does not have a finitely generated Cox ring if $n$ is at least $13$.

We describe how Mirković–Vilonen (MV) polytopes arise naturally from the categorification of Lie algebras using Khovanov–Lauda–Rouquier (KLR) algebras. This gives an explicit description of the unique crystal isomorphism between simple representations of KLR algebras and MV polytopes. MV polytopes, as defined from the geometry of the affine Grassmannian, only make sense in finite type. Our construction on the other hand gives a map from the infinity crystal to polytopes for all symmetrizable Kac–Moody algebras. However, to make the map injective and have well-defined crystal operators on the image, we must in general decorate the polytopes with some extra information. We suggest that the resulting ‘KLR polytopes’ are the general-type analogues of MV polytopes. We give a combinatorial description of the resulting decorated polytopes in all affine cases, and show that this recovers the affine MV polytopes recently defined by Baumann, Kamnitzer, and the first author in symmetric affine types. We also briefly discuss the situation beyond affine type.

We define a multiple Dirichlet series whose group of functional equations is the Weyl group of the affine Kac–Moody root system $\widetilde{A}_{n}$, generalizing the theory of multiple Dirichlet series for finite Weyl groups. The construction is over the rational function field $\mathbb{F}_{q}(t)$, and is based upon four natural axioms from algebraic geometry. We prove that the four axioms yield a unique series with meromorphic continuation to the largest possible domain and the desired infinite group of symmetries.

In this paper we prove that a smooth family of canonically polarized manifolds parametrized by a special (in the sense of Campana) quasi-projective variety is isotrivial.

We construct regular integral canonical models for Shimura varieties attached to Spin and orthogonal groups at (possibly ramified) primes $p>2$ where the level is not divisible by $p$. We exhibit these models as schemes of ‘relative PEL type’ over integral canonical models of larger Spin Shimura varieties with good reduction at $p$. Work of Vasiu–Zink then shows that the classical Kuga–Satake construction extends over the integral models and that the integral models we construct are canonical in a very precise sense. Our results have applications to the Tate conjecture for K3 surfaces, as well as to Kudla’s program of relating intersection numbers of special cycles on orthogonal Shimura varieties to Fourier coefficients of modular forms.

The Severi degree is the degree of the Severi variety parametrizing plane curves of degree $d$ with ${\it\delta}$ nodes. Recently, Göttsche and Shende gave two refinements of Severi degrees, polynomials in a variable $y$, which are conjecturally equal, for large $d$. At $y=1$, one of the refinements, the relative Severi degree, specializes to the (non-relative) Severi degree. We give a tropical description of the refined Severi degrees, in terms of a refined tropical curve count for all toric surfaces. We also refine the equivalent count of floor diagrams for Hirzebruch and rational ruled surfaces. Our description implies that, for fixed ${\it\delta}$, the refined Severi degrees are polynomials in $d$ and $y$, for large $d$. As a consequence, we show that, for ${\it\delta}\leqslant 10$ and all $d\geqslant {\it\delta}/2+1$, both refinements of Göttsche and Shende agree and equal our refined counts of tropical curves and floor diagrams.

We construct the quantized enveloping algebra of any simple Lie algebra of type $\mathbb{A}\mathbb{D}\mathbb{E}$ as the quotient of a Grothendieck ring arising from certain cyclic quiver varieties. In particular, the dual canonical basis of a one-half quantum group with respect to Lusztig’s bilinear form is contained in the natural basis of the Grothendieck ring up to rescaling. This paper expands the categorification established by Hernandez and Leclerc to the whole quantum groups. It can be viewed as a geometric counterpart of Bridgeland’s recent work for type $\mathbb{A}\mathbb{D}\mathbb{E}$.

An affine symplectic singularity $X$ with a good $\mathbf{C}^{\ast }$-action is called a conical symplectic variety. In this paper we prove the following theorem. For fixed positive integers $N$ and $d$, there are only a finite number of conical symplectic varieties of dimension $2d$ with maximal weights $N$, up to an isomorphism. To prove the main theorem, we first relate a conical symplectic variety with a log Fano Kawamata log terminal (klt) pair, which has a contact structure. By the boundedness result for log Fano klt pairs with fixed Cartier index, we prove that conical symplectic varieties of a fixed dimension and with a fixed maximal weight form a bounded family. Next we prove the rigidity of conical symplectic varieties by using Poisson deformations.

In this paper, we extend the notion of Shintani descent to general (possibly disconnected) algebraic groups defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. For this, it is essential to treat all the pure inner $\mathbb{F}_{q}$-rational forms of the algebraic group at the same time. We prove that the notion of almost characters (introduced by Shoji using Shintani descent) is well defined for any neutrally unipotent algebraic group, i.e. an algebraic group whose neutral connected component is a unipotent group. We also prove that these almost characters coincide with the ‘trace of Frobenius’ functions associated with Frobenius-stable character sheaves on neutrally unipotent groups. In the course of the proof, we also prove that the modular categories that arise from Boyarchenko and Drinfeld’s theory of character sheaves on neutrally unipotent groups are in fact positive integral, confirming a conjecture due to Drinfeld.

We prove an analogue of the classical Bateman–Horn conjecture on prime values of polynomials for the ring of polynomials over a large finite field. Given a family of varieties $X\rightarrow \mathbb{P}^{n}$ over a number field, we determine conditions under which there is a Brauer–Manin obstruction to weak approximation for 100% of the fibres which are everywhere locally soluble.

Let $X$ be a compact Kähler manifold, endowed with an effective reduced divisor $B=\sum Y_{k}$ having simple normal crossing support. We consider a closed form of $(1,1)$ -type $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ on $X$ whose corresponding class $\{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}\}$ is nef, such that the class $c_{1}(K_{X}+B)+\{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}\}\in H^{1,1}(X,\mathbb{R})$ is pseudo-effective. A particular case of the first result we establish in this short note states the following. For a prime number $p$ , we show that differentials $d_{n}$ in the motivic cohomology spectral sequence with $p$ -local coefficients vanish unless $p-1$ divides $n-1$ . We obtain an explicit formula for the first non-trivial differential $d_{p}$ , expressing it in terms of motivic Steenrod $p$ -power operations and Bockstein maps. To this end, we compute the algebra of operations of weight $p-1$ with $p$ -local coefficients. Finally, we construct examples of varieties having non-trivial differentials $d_{p}$ in their motivic cohomology spectral sequences.

The Bogomolov conjecture claims that a closed subvariety containing a dense subset of small points is a special kind of subvariety. In the arithmetic setting over number fields, the Bogomolov conjecture for abelian varieties has already been established as a theorem of Ullmo and Zhang, but in the geometric setting over function fields, it has not yet been solved completely. There are only some partial results known such as the totally degenerate case due to Gubler and our recent work generalizing Gubler’s result. The key in establishing the previous results on the Bogomolov conjecture is the equidistribution method due to Szpiro, Ullmo and Zhang with respect to the canonical measures. In this paper we exhibit the limits of this method, making an important contribution to the geometric version of the conjecture. In fact, by the crucial investigation of the support of the canonical measure on a subvariety, we show that the conjecture in full generality holds if the conjecture holds for abelian varieties which have anywhere good reduction. As a consequence, we establish a partial answer that generalizes our previous result.

We give a diagrammatic presentation for the category of Soergel bimodules for the dihedral group $W$. The (two-colored) Temperley–Lieb category is embedded inside this category as the degree $0$ morphisms between color-alternating objects. The indecomposable Soergel bimodules are the images of Jones–Wenzl projectors. When $W$ is infinite, the parameter $q$ of the Temperley–Lieb algebra may be generic, yielding a quantum version of the geometric Satake equivalence for $\mathfrak{sl}_{2}$. When $W$ is finite, $q$ must be specialized to an appropriate root of unity, and the negligible Jones–Wenzl projector yields the Soergel bimodule for the longest element of $W$.

We apply results from both contact topology and exceptional surgery theory to study when Legendrian surgery on a knot yields a reducible manifold. As an application, we show that a reducible surgery on a non-cabled positive knot of genus $g$ must have slope $2g-1$, leading to a proof of the cabling conjecture for positive knots of genus 2. Our techniques also produce bounds on the maximum Thurston–Bennequin numbers of cables.

In this article, we present a conjectural formula describing the cokernel of the Albanese map of zero-cycles of smooth projective varieties $X$ over $p$ -adic fields in terms of the Néron–Severi group and provide a proof under additional assumptions on an integral model of $X$ . The proof depends on a non-degeneracy result of Brauer–Manin pairing due to Saito–Sato and on Gabber–de Jong’s comparison result of cohomological and Azumaya–Brauer groups. We will also mention the local–global problem for the Albanese cokernel; the abelian group on the ‘local side’ turns out to be a finite group.

We prove a subconvexity bound for the central value $L(\frac{1}{2},{\it\chi})$ of a Dirichlet $L$-function of a character ${\it\chi}$ to a prime power modulus $q=p^{n}$ of the form $L(\frac{1}{2},{\it\chi})\ll p^{r}q^{{\it\theta}+{\it\epsilon}}$ with a fixed $r$ and ${\it\theta}\approx 0.1645<\frac{1}{6}$, breaking the long-standing Weyl exponent barrier. In fact, we develop a general new theory of estimation of short exponential sums involving $p$-adically analytic phases, which can be naturally seen as a $p$-adic analogue of the method of exponent pairs. This new method is presented in a ready-to-use form and applies to a wide class of well-behaved phases including many that arise from a stationary phase analysis of hyper-Kloosterman and other complete exponential sums.
