This paper is concerned with the arithmetic of curves of the form vp=us(1−u), where p is a prime with $p$ ≥ 5 and s is an integer such that 1 ≤ s ≤ p−2. The Jacobians of these curves admit complexion by a primitive p-th root of unity ζ. We find explicit rational functions on these curves whose divisors are p-multiples of divisors representing (1-ζ)2 - and (1-ζ)3-division points on the corresponding Jacobians. This also gives an effective version of a theorem of Greenberg.

In this paper, we prove that the set of all $F$-pure thresholds on a fixed germ of a strongly $F$-regular pair satisfies the ascending chain condition. As a corollary, we verify the ascending chain condition for the set of all $F$-pure thresholds on smooth varieties or, more generally, on varieties with tame quotient singularities, which is an affirmative answer to a conjecture given by Blickle, Mustaţǎ and Smith.

Beilinson [Higher regulators and values of L-functions, Itogi Nauki i Tekhniki Seriya Sovremennye Problemy Matematiki Noveishie Dostizheniya (Current problems in mathematics), vol. 24 (Vserossiisky Institut Nauchnoi i Tekhnicheskoi Informatsii, Moscow, 1984), 181–238] obtained a formula relating the special value of the L-function of H2 of a product of modular curves to the regulator of an element of a motivic cohomology group, thus providing evidence for his general conjectures on special values of L-functions. In this paper we prove a similar formula for the L-function of the product of two Drinfeld modular curves, providing evidence for an analogous conjecture in the case of function fields.

The mobility of a Kähler metric is the dimension of the space of metrics with which it is c-projectively equivalent. The mobility is at least two if and only if the Kähler metric admits a nontrivial hamiltonian 2-form. After summarizing this relationship, we present necessary conditions for a Kähler metric to have mobility at least three: its curvature must have nontrivial nullity at every point. Using the local classification of Kähler metrics with hamiltonian 2-forms, we describe explicitly the Kähler metrics with mobility at least three and hence show that the nullity condition on the curvature is also sufficient, up to some degenerate exceptions. In an appendix, we explain how the classification may be related, generically, to the holonomy of a complex cone metric.

Let $G$ be a real reductive group and $Z=G/H$ a unimodular homogeneous $G$ space. The space $Z$ is said to satisfy VAI (vanishing at infinity) if all smooth vectors in the Banach representations $L^{p}(Z)$ vanish at infinity, $1\leqslant p<\infty$. For $H$ connected we show that $Z$ satisfies VAI if and only if it is of reductive type.

We study Rubin’s variant of the p-adic Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for CM elliptic curves concerning certain special values of the Katz two-variable p-adic L-function that lie outside the range of p-adic interpolation.

The pentagram map takes a planar polygon $P$ to a polygon $P'$ whose vertices are the intersection points of consecutive shortest diagonals of $P$. This map is known to interact nicely with Poncelet polygons, that is, polygons which are simultaneously inscribed in a conic and circumscribed about a conic. A theorem of Schwartz states that if $P$ is a Poncelet polygon, then the image of $P$ under the pentagram map is projectively equivalent to $P$. In the present paper, we show that in the convex case this property characterizes Poncelet polygons: if a convex polygon is projectively equivalent to its pentagram image, then it is Poncelet. The proof is based on the theory of commuting difference operators, as well as on properties of real elliptic curves and theta functions.

In this paper we establish some constraints on the eigenvalues for the action of a self map of a proper variety on its $\ell$-adic cohomology. The essential ingredients are a trace formula due to Fujiwara, and the theory of weights.

We develop an effective version of the Chabauty–Kim method which gives explicit upper bounds on the number of $S$-integral points on a hyperbolic curve in terms of dimensions of certain Bloch–Kato Selmer groups. Using this, we give a new ‘motivic’ proof that the number of solutions to the $S$-unit equation is bounded uniformly in terms of $\#S$.

Let $Q$ be an acyclic quiver and $w \geqslant 1$ be an integer. Let $\mathsf {C}_{-w}({\mathbf {k}} Q)$ be the $(-w)$-cluster category of ${\mathbf {k}} Q$. We show that there is a bijection between simple-minded collections in $\mathsf {D}^b({\mathbf {k}} Q)$ lying in a fundamental domain of $\mathsf {C}_{-w}({\mathbf {k}} Q)$ and $w$-simple-minded systems in $\mathsf {C}_{-w}({\mathbf {k}} Q)$. This generalises the same result of Iyama–Jin in the case that $Q$ is Dynkin. A key step in our proof is the observation that the heart $\mathsf {H}$ of a bounded t-structure in a Hom-finite, Krull–Schmidt, ${\mathbf {k}}$-linear saturated triangulated category $\mathsf {D}$ is functorially finite in $\mathsf {D}$ if and only if $\mathsf {H}$ has enough injectives and enough projectives. We then establish a bijection between $w$-simple-minded systems in $\mathsf {C}_{-w}({\mathbf {k}} Q)$ and positive $w$-noncrossing partitions of the corresponding Weyl group $W_Q$.

We describe a method to show that certain elliptic surfaces do not admit purely inseparable multisections (equivalently, that genus 1 curves over function fields admit no points over the perfect closure of the base field) and use it to show that any non-Jacobian elliptic structure on a very general supersingular K3 surface has no purely inseparable multisections. We also describe specific examples of genus 1 fibrations on supersingular K3 surfaces without purely inseparable multisections.

We define higher semiadditive algebraic K-theory, a variant of algebraic K-theory that takes into account higher semiadditive structure, as enjoyed for example by the $\mathrm {K}(n)$- and $\mathrm {T}(n)$-local categories. We prove that it satisfies a form of the redshift conjecture. Namely, that if $R$ is a ring spectrum of height $\leq n$, then its semiadditive K-theory is of height $\leq n+1$. Under further hypothesis on $R$, which are satisfied for example by the Lubin–Tate spectrum $\mathrm {E}_n$, we show that its semiadditive algebraic K-theory is of height exactly $n+1$. Finally, we connect semiadditive K-theory to $\mathrm {T}(n+1)$-localized K-theory, showing that they coincide for any $p$-invertible ring spectrum and for the completed Johnson–Wilson spectrum $\widehat {\mathrm {E}(n)}$.

We prove a formula, which, given a principally polarized abelian variety $(A,\lambda )$ over the field of algebraic numbers, relates the stable Faltings height of $A$ with the Néron–Tate height of a symmetric theta divisor on $A$. Our formula completes earlier results due to Bost, Hindry, Autissier and Wagener. The local non-archimedean terms in our formula can be expressed as the tropical moments of the tropicalizations of $(A,\lambda )$.

If G is a (split) Kac–Moody group over a field K endowed with a real valuation $\omega$, we build an action of G on a geometric object $\mathcal I$. This object is called a building, as it is an union of apartments, with the classical properties of systems of apartments. However, these apartments are more exotic: that associated to a torus T may be seen as the gluing of all Satake compactifications of affine apartments of T with respect to spherical parabolic subgroups of G containing T. Another geometric realization of these apartments makes them look more like the apartments of $\Lambda$-buildings; then the translations of the Weyl group act only on infinitely small elements of the apartment, so we call these buildings microaffine.

In this article, for nilpotent orbits of ramified quasi-split unitary groups with two Jordan blocks, we give closed formulas for their Shalika germs at certain equi-valued elements with half-integral depth previously studied by Hales. Associated with these elements are hyperelliptic curves defined over the residue field, and the numbers we obtain can be expressed in terms of Frobenius eigenvalues on the first $\ell$-adic cohomology of the curves, generalizing previous result of Hales on stable subregular Shalika germs. These Shalika germ formulas imply new results on stability and endoscopic transfer of nilpotent orbital integrals of ramified unitary groups. We also describe how the same numbers appear in the local character expansions of specific supercuspidal representations and consequently dimensions of degenerate Whittaker models.

We prove the semisimplicity conjecture for A-motives over finitely generated fields K. This conjecture states that the rational Tate modules V𝔭(M) of a semisimple A-motive M are semisimple as representations of the absolute Galois group of K. This theorem is in analogy with known results for abelian varieties and Drinfeld modules, and has been sketched previously by Tamagawa. We deduce two consequences of the theorem for the algebraic monodromy groups G𝔭(M) associated to an A-motive M by Tannakian duality. The first requires no semisimplicity condition on M and states that G𝔭(M) may be identified naturally with the Zariski closure of the image of the absolute Galois group of K in the automorphism group of V𝔭(M). The second states that the connected component of G𝔭(M) is reductive if M is semisimple and has a separable endomorphism algebra.

We define a generalization of the Euler characteristic of a perfect complex of modules for the group ring of a finite group. This is combined with work of Lichtenbaum and Saito to define an equivariant Euler characteristic for G on regular projective surfaces over Z having a free action of a finite group. In positive characteristic we relate the Euler characteristic of G to the leading terms of the expansions of L-functions at s=1.

In a previous paper, the potential automorphy of certain Galois representations to GLn for n even was established, following the work of Harris, Shepherd–Barron and Taylor and using the lifting theorems of Clozel, Harris and Taylor. In this paper, we extend those results to n=3 and n=5, and conditionally to all other odd n. The key additional tools necessary are results which give the automorphy or potential automorphy of symmetric powers of elliptic curves, most notably those of Gelbert, Jacquet, Kim, Shahidi and Harris.

On P$^3$, we show that mathematical instantons in characteristic two are unobstructed. We produce upper bounds for the dimension of the moduli space of stable rank two bundles on P$^3$ in characteristic two. In cases where there is a phenomenon of good reduction modulo two, these give similar results in characteristic zero. We also give an example of a nonreduced component of the moduli space in characteristic two.
