Let F be a p-adic field. Consider a dual pair where SO(2n+1)+ is the split orthogonal group and is the metaplectic cover of the symplectic group Sp(2n) over F. We study lifting of characters between orthogonal and metaplectic groups. We say that a representation of SO(2n+1)+ lifts to a representation of if their characters on corresponding conjugacy classes are equal up to a transfer factor. We study properties of this transfer factor, which is essentially the character of the difference of the two halves of the oscillator representation. We show that the lifting commutes with parabolic induction. These results were motivated by the paper ‘Lifting of characters on orthogonal and metaplectic groups’ by Adams who considered the case F=ℝ.

Let $k = {\Bbb F}_q(t)$ be the rational function field with finite constant field and characteristic $p \geq 3$, and let K/k be a finite separable extension. For a fixed place v of k and an elliptic curve E/K which has ordinary reduction at all places of K extending v, we consider a canonical height pairing $\langle \phantom {x},\phantom {x}\! \rangle _v \colon E(K^{\rm {sep}}) \times E(K^{\rm {sep}}) \to {\Bbb C}_{v}^{\times }$ which is symmetric, bilinear and Galois equivariant. The pairing $\langle \phantom {x},\phantom {x}\! \rangle _\infty$ for the “infinite” place of k is a natural extension of the classical Néron–Tate height. For v finite, the pairing $\langle \phantom {x},\phantom {x}\! \rangle _v$ plays the role of global analytic p-adic heights. We further determine some hypotheses for the nondegeneracy of these pairings.

We define and study a Lefschetz operator on the equivariant cohomology complex of the Drinfeld and Lubin–Tate towers. For ℓ-adic coefficients we show how this operator induces a geometric realization of the Langlands correspondence composed with the Zelevinski involution for elliptic representations. Combined with our previous study of the monodromy operator, this suggests a possible extension of Arthur’s philosophy for unitary representations occurring in the intersection cohomology of Shimura varieties to the possibly non-unitary representations occurring in the cohomology of Rapoport–Zink spaces. However, our motivation for studying the Lefschetz operator comes from the hope that its geometric nature will enable us to realize the mod-ℓ Langlands correspondence due to Vignéras. We discuss this problem and propose a conjecture.

In the paper we find a further generalization of congruences of the K. Hardy and K. S. Williams [5] type which seems to be a full generalization of congruences of G. Gras [4]. Moreover we extend results of [5], [7], [8], [9] and in part of [6]. We apply ideas and methods of [.

We give conditions which imply that a complete noncompact manifold with quadratic curvature decay has finite topological type. In particular, we find links between the topology of a manifold with quadratic curvature decay and some properties of the asymptotic cones of such a manifold.

A p-divisible group over a complete local domain determines a Galois representation on the Tate module of its generic fibre. We determine the image of this representation for the universal deformation in mixed characteristic of a bi-infinitesimal group and for the p-rank strata of the universal deformation in positive characteristic of an infinitesimal group. The method is a reduction to the known case of one-dimensional groups by a deformation argument based on properties of the stratification by Newton polygons.

Let $k$ be a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_{p}$, let ${\mathcal{G}}$ be an absolutely simple split reductive group over $k$, and let $K$ be a maximal unramified extension of $k$. To each point in the Bruhat–Tits building of ${\mathcal{G}}_{K}$, Moy and Prasad have attached a filtration of ${\mathcal{G}}(K)$ by bounded subgroups. In this paper we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the dual of the first Moy–Prasad filtration quotient to contain stable vectors for the action of the reductive quotient. Our work extends earlier results by Reeder and Yu, who gave a classification in the case when $p$ is sufficiently large. By passing to a finite unramified extension of $k$ if necessary, we obtain new supercuspidal representations of ${\mathcal{G}}(k)$.

Using multiple point spaces some new examples of perverse sheaves on images of maps are described. Furthermore, suppose $f:X → Y$ is a finite and proper map of complex analytic manifolds of dimension n and $n+1$ such that every multiple point space is nonsingular and has the dimension expected of a generic map. Then we can describe the composition series for the constant sheaf on the image in the category of perverse sheaves.

We prove that formal Fourier Jacobi expansions of degree two are Siegel modular forms. As a corollary, we deduce modularity of the generating function of special cycles of codimension two, which were defined by Kudla. A second application is the proof of termination of an algorithm to compute Fourier expansions of arbitrary Siegel modular forms of degree two. Combining both results enables us to determine relations of special cycles in the second Chow group.

In the 1970s, Dwork defined the logarithmic growth (log-growth for short) filtrations for $p$-adic differential equations $Dx=0$ on the $p$-adic open unit disc $|t|<1$, which measure the asymptotic behavior of solutions $x$ as $|t|\to 1^{-}$. Then, Dwork calculated the log-growth filtration for $p$-adic Gaussian hypergeometric differential equation. In the late 2000s, Chiarellotto and Tsuzuki proposed a fundamental conjecture on the log-growth filtrations for $(\varphi ,\nabla )$-modules over $K[\![t]\!]_0$, which can be regarded as a generalization of Dwork's calculation. In this paper, we prove a generalization of the conjecture to $(\varphi ,\nabla )$-modules over the bounded Robba ring. As an application, we prove a generalization of Dwork's conjecture proposed by Chiarellotto and Tsuzuki on the specialization property for log-growth Newton polygons.

We initiate the study of outer automorphism groups of special groups $G$, in the Haglund–Wise sense. We show that $\operatorname {Out}(G)$ is infinite if and only if $G$ splits over a co-abelian subgroup of a centraliser and there exists an infinite-order ‘generalised Dehn twist’. Similarly, the coarse-median preserving subgroup $\operatorname {Out}_{\rm cmp}(G)$ is infinite if and only if $G$ splits over an actual centraliser and there exists an infinite-order coarse-median-preserving generalised Dehn twist. The proof is based on constructing and analysing non-small, stable $G$-actions on $\mathbb {R}$-trees whose arc-stabilisers are centralisers or closely related subgroups. Interestingly, tripod-stabilisers can be arbitrary centralisers, and thus are large subgroups of $G$. As a result of independent interest, we determine when generalised Dehn twists associated to splittings of $G$ preserve the coarse median structure.

The journal Compositio Mathematica was founded by Luitzen E. J. Brouwer to counter his dismissal from the Mathematische Annalen in 1928. In spite of the economic crisis, Brouwer succeeded in finding a publisher (Noordhoff), an editorial board and subscribers. The founding took place at the time of the rise of the Third Reich, which caused problems of a political nature. The German editors followed Ludwig Bieberbach in 1934 when he left the board because Brouwer refused to dismiss the Jewish editors. After a period of flourishing, the publication was suspended at the beginning of the occupation of Holland in 1940. The post-war restart of the journal led to a painful conflict between Brouwer and the publisher, which ended with Brouwer's withdrawal from power. After having founded his own journal in the early 1930s, he lost it again some twenty years later.

We define nef line bundles ${\mathcal L}_r$ on a projective variety X with the property that, for a curve $C \subset X$, the intersection ${\mathcal L}_r.C$ is zero, if and only if the restriction morphism ${\rm Hom}(\pi_1(X),{\rm U}(r)) \to {\rm Hom}(\pi_1(C),{\rm U}(r))$ has finite image up to conjugation. This yields a rational morphism $\smash[b]{\xymatrix{X \ar@{-->}[r]^-{{\rm alb}_r} & {\rm Alb}_r(X)}}$ contracting those curves C with ${\mathcal L}_r.C=0$. For $r=1$ this is the Stein factorization of the Albanese morphism.

In this paper, we use the theory of critical points of distance functions to study the rigidity and topology of Riemannian manifolds with sectional curvature bounded below. We prove that an n-dimensional complete connected Riemannian manifold M with sectional curvature KM [ges ] 1 is isometric to an n-dimensional Euclidean unit sphere if M has conjugate radius bigger than π/2 and contains a geodesic loop of length 2π. We also prove that if M is an n([ges ]3)-dimensional complete connected Riemannian manifold with KM [ges ] 1 and radius bigger than π/2, then any closed connected totally geodesic submanifold of dimension not less than two of M is homeomorphic to a sphere.

We prove by the Hilbert–Mumford criterion that a slope stable polarized weighted pointed nodal curve is Chow asymptotic stable. This generalizes the result of Caporaso on stability of polarized nodal curves and of Hassett on weighted pointed stable curves polarized by the weighted dualizing sheaves. It also solves a question raised by Mumford and Gieseker, to prove the Chow asymptotic stability of stable nodal curves by the Hilbert–Mumford criterion.

We consider deformations of singular Lagrangian varieties in symplectic manifolds. We prove that a Lagrangian deformation of a Lagrangian complete intersection is analytically rigid provided that this is the case infinitesimally. This result is given as a consequence of the coherence of the direct image sheaves of relative infinitesimal Lagrangian deformations.

We study the interplay between the minimal representations of the orthogonal Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{so}(n+2,\mathbb{C})$ and the algebra of symmetries$\mathscr{S}(\Box ^{r})$ of powers of the Laplacian $\Box$ on $\mathbb{C}^{n}$. The connection is made through the construction of a highest-weight representation of $\mathfrak{g}$ via the ring of differential operators ${\mathcal{D}}(X)$ on the singular scheme $X=(\mathtt{F}^{r}=0)\subset \mathbb{C}^{n}$, for $\mathtt{F}=\sum _{j=1}^{n}X_{i}^{2}\in \mathbb{C}[X_{1},\ldots ,X_{n}]$. In particular, we prove that $U(\mathfrak{g})/K_{r}\cong \mathscr{S}(\Box ^{r})\cong {\mathcal{D}}(X)$ for a certain primitive ideal $K_{r}$. Interestingly, if (and only if) $n$ is even with $r\geqslant n/2$, then both $\mathscr{S}(\Box ^{r})$ and its natural module ${\mathcal{A}}=\mathbb{C}[\unicode[STIX]{x2202}/\unicode[STIX]{x2202}X_{n},\ldots ,\unicode[STIX]{x2202}/\unicode[STIX]{x2202}X_{n}]/(\Box ^{r})$ have a finite-dimensional factor. The same holds for the ${\mathcal{D}}(X)$-module ${\mathcal{O}}(X)$. We also study higher-dimensional analogues $M_{r}=\{x\in A:\Box ^{r}(x)=0\}$ of the module of harmonic elements in $A=\mathbb{C}[X_{1},\ldots ,X_{n}]$ and of the space of ‘harmonic densities’. In both cases we obtain a minimal $\mathfrak{g}$-representation that is closely related to the $\mathfrak{g}$-modules ${\mathcal{O}}(X)$ and ${\mathcal{A}}$. Essentially all these results have real analogues, with the Laplacian replaced by the d’Alembertian $\Box _{p}$ on the pseudo-Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{p,q}$ and with $\mathfrak{g}$ replaced by the real Lie algebra $\mathfrak{so}(p+1,q+1)$.

To a polynomial map f : Cn + 1 → C one can attach a monodromy transformation on the complex cohomology of its generic fiber that reflects its asymptotic behaviour. In this paper this transformation is determined for a class of generic polynomials in terms of data attached to projective hypersurfaces with isolated singularities.

The eta invariant of the Dirac operator over a non-compact cofinite quotient of PSL(2,ℝ) is defined through a regularized trace following Melrose. It reduces to the standard definition in terms of eigenvalues in the case of a totally non-trivial spin structure. When the S1-fibers are rescaled, the metric becomes of non-exact fibered-cusp type near the ends. We completely describe the continuous spectrum of the Dirac operator with respect to the rescaled metric and its dependence on the spin structure, and show that the adiabatic limit of the eta invariant is essentially the volume of the base hyperbolic Riemann surface with cusps, extending some of the results of Seade and Steer.

We resolve parts (A) and (B) of Problem 1.100 from Kirby’s list [Problems in low-dimensional topology, in Geometric topology, AMS/IP Studies in Advanced Mathematics, vol. 2 (American Mathematical Society, Providence, RI, 1997), 35–473] by showing that many nontrivial links arise as cross-sections of unknotted holomorphic disks in the four-ball. The techniques can be used to produce unknotted ribbon surfaces with prescribed cross-sections, including unknotted Lagrangian disks with nontrivial cross-sections.
