We study a theta lift from a cusp form $f$ on $U(1,1)$ to a cusp form $\mathcal{L} f$ on $U(2,1)$ (the unitary Kudla lift of $f$). We give an explicit expression of the Fourier–Jacobi expansion of $\mathcal{L} f$ in terms of periods and Hecke eigenvalues of $f$. As an application, we give a criterion for the nonvanishing of $\mathcal{L} f$.

We generalize the $\mathbb{Z}/p$metabelian birational $p$-adic section conjecture for curves, as introduced and proved in Pop [On the birational$p$-adic section conjecture, Compos. Math. 146 (2010), 621–637], to all complete smooth varieties, provided $p>2$. The condition $p>2$ seems to be of technical nature only, and might be removable.

Let G be the simple algebraic group Sp(2,2), to be defined over ℚ. It is a non-quasi-split, ℚ-rank-two inner form of the split symplectic group Sp8 of rank four. The cohomology of the space of automorphic forms on G has a natural subspace, which is spanned by classes represented by residues and derivatives of cuspidal Eisenstein series. It is called Eisenstein cohomology. In this paper we give a detailed description of the Eisenstein cohomology HqEis(G,E) of G in the case of regular coefficients E. It is spanned only by holomorphic Eisenstein series. For non-regular coefficients E we really have to detect the poles of our Eisenstein series. Since G is not quasi-split, we are out of the scope of the so-called ‘Langlands–Shahidi method’ (cf. F. Shahidi, On certain L-functions, Amer. J. Math. 103 (1981), 297–355; F. Shahidi, On the Ramanujan conjecture and finiteness of poles for certain L-functions, Ann. of Math. (2) 127 (1988), 547–584). We apply recent results of Grbac in order to find the double poles of Eisenstein series attached to the minimal parabolic P0 of G. Having collected this information, we determine the square-integrable Eisenstein cohomology supported by P0 with respect to arbitrary coefficients and prove a vanishing result. This will exemplify a general theorem we prove in this paper on the distribution of maximally residual Eisenstein cohomology classes.

It is well known that every finite subgroup of GLd(Q[ell ]) is conjugate to a subgroup of GLd(Z[ell ]). However, this does not remain true if we replace general linear groups by symplectic groups. We say that G is a group of inertia type of G is a finite group which has a normal Sylow-p-subgroup with cyclic quotient. We show that if [ell ]>d+1, and G is a subgroup of Sp2d(Q[ell ]) of inertia type, then G is conjugate in GL2d(Q[ell ]) to a subgroup of Sp2d(Z[ell ]). We give examples which show that the bound is sharp. We apply these results to construct, for every odd prime [ell ], isogeny classes of Abelian varieties all of whose polarizations have degree divisible by [ell ]2. We prove similar results for Euler characteristic of invertible sheaves on Abelian varieties over fields of positive characteristic.

The bounded height conjecture of Bombieri, Masser, and Zannier states that for any sufficiently generic algebraic subvariety of a semiabelian $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$-variety $G$ there is an upper bound on the Weil height of the points contained in its intersection with the union of all algebraic subgroups having (at most) complementary dimension in $G$. This conjecture has been shown by Habegger in the case where $G$ is either a multiplicative torus or an abelian variety. However, there are new obstructions to his approach if $G$ is a general semiabelian variety. In particular, the lack of Poincaré reducibility means that quotients of a given semiabelian variety are intricate to describe. To overcome this, we study directly certain families of line bundles on $G$. This allows us to demonstrate the conjecture for general semiabelian varieties.

Yoshikawa in [Invent. Math. 156 (2004), 53–117] introduces a holomorphic torsion invariant of $K3$ surfaces with involution. In this paper we completely determine its structure as an automorphic function on the moduli space of such $K3$ surfaces. On every component of the moduli space, it is expressed as the product of an explicit Borcherds lift and a classical Siegel modular form. We also introduce its twisted version. We prove its modularity and a certain uniqueness of the modular form corresponding to the twisted holomorphic torsion invariant. This is used to study an equivariant analogue of Borcherds’ conjecture.

Considering a holonomic ${\mathcal D}$-module and a hypersurface, we define a finite family of ${\mathcal D}$-modules on the hypersurface which we call modules of vanishing cycles. The first one had been previously defined and corresponds to formal solutions. The last one corresponds, via Riemann-Hilbert, to the geometric vanishing cycles of Grothendieck-Deligne. For regular holonomic ${\mathcal D}$-modules there is only one sheaf and for non regular modules the sheaves of vanishing cycles control the growth and the index of solutions. Our results extend to non holonomic modules under some hypothesis.

We give the first examples of derived equivalences between varieties defined over non-closed fields where one has a rational point and the other does not. We begin with torsors over Jacobians of curves over $\mathbb {Q}$ and $\mathbb {F}_q(t)$, and conclude with a pair of hyperkähler 4-folds over $\mathbb {Q}$. The latter is independently interesting as a new example of a transcendental Brauer–Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle. The source code for the various computations is supplied as supplementary material with the online version of this article.

We introduce techniques of Suslin, Voevodsky, and others into the study of singular varieties. Our approach is modeled after Goresky–MacPherson intersection homology. We provide a formulation of perversity cycle spaces leading to perversity homology theory and a companion perversity cohomology theory based on generalized cocycle spaces. These theories lead to conditions on pairs of cycles which can be intersected and a suitable equivalence relation on cocycles/cycles enabling pairings on equivalence classes. We establish suspension and splitting theorems, as well as a localization property. Some examples of intersections on singular varieties are computed.

Let $k$ be a number field with algebraic closure $ \overline{k} $, and let $S$ be a finite set of primes of $k$ containing all the infinite ones. Let $E/ k$ be an elliptic curve, ${\mit{\Gamma} }_{0} $ be a finitely generated subgroup of $E( \overline{k} )$, and $\mit{\Gamma} \subseteq E( \overline{k} )$ the division group attached to ${\mit{\Gamma} }_{0} $. Fix an effective divisor $D$ of $E$ with support containing either: (i) at least two points whose difference is not torsion; or (ii) at least one point not in $\mit{\Gamma} $. We prove that the set of ‘integral division points on $E( \overline{k} )$’, i.e., the set of points of $\mit{\Gamma} $ which are $S$-integral on $E$ relative to $D, $ is finite. We also prove the ${ \mathbb{G} }_{\mathrm{m} } $-analogue of this theorem, thereby establishing the 1-dimensional case of a general conjecture we pose on integral division points on semi-abelian varieties.

When restricted to alternating links, both Heegaard Floer and Khovanov homology concentrate along a single diagonal $\delta$-grading. This leads to the broader class of thin links that one would like to characterize without reference to the invariant in question. We provide a relative version of thinness for tangles and use this to characterize thinness via tangle decompositions along Conway spheres. These results bear a strong resemblance to the L-space gluing theorem for three-manifolds with torus boundary. Our results are based on certain immersed curve invariants for Conway tangles, namely the Heegaard Floer invariant $\operatorname {HFT}$ and the Khovanov invariant $\widetilde {\operatorname {Kh}}$ that were developed by the authors in previous works.

We construct a complex analytic version of an equivariant cohomology theory which appeared in a paper of Rezk, and which is roughly modelled on the Borel-equivariant cohomology of the double free loop space. The construction is defined on finite, torus-equivariant CW complexes and takes values in coherent holomorphic sheaves over the moduli stack of complex elliptic curves. Our methods involve an inverse limit construction over all finite-dimensional subcomplexes of the double free loop space, following an analogous construction of Kitchloo for single free loop spaces. We show that, for any given complex elliptic curve $\mathcal {C}$, the fiber of our construction over $\mathcal {C}$ is isomorphic to Grojnowski's equivariant elliptic cohomology theory associated to $\mathcal {C}$.

We prove the integral Hodge conjecture for one-cycles on a principally polarized complex abelian variety whose minimal class is algebraic. In particular, the Jacobian of a smooth projective curve over the complex numbers satisfies the integral Hodge conjecture for one-cycles. The main ingredient is a lift of the Fourier transform to integral Chow groups. Similarly, we prove the integral Tate conjecture for one-cycles on the Jacobian of a smooth projective curve over the separable closure of a finitely generated field. Furthermore, abelian varieties satisfying such a conjecture are dense in their moduli space.

We consider the Weil–Petersson gradient vector field of renormalized volume on the deformation space of convex cocompact hyperbolic structures on (relatively) acylindrical manifolds. In this paper we prove the conjecture that the flow has a global attracting fixed point at the unique structure $M_{\rm geod}$ with minimum convex core volume.

We compute the regulator of the Beilinson–Deninger–Scholl elements in terms of special values of $L$ -functions of modular forms. The main tool is the Rogers–Zudilin method.

We introduce the notion of completed $F$-crystals on the absolute prismatic site of a smooth $p$-adic formal scheme. We define a functor from the category of completed prismatic $F$-crystals to that of crystalline étale $\mathbf {Z}_p$-local systems on the generic fiber of the formal scheme and show that it gives an equivalence of categories. This generalizes the work of Bhatt and Scholze, which treats the case of a mixed characteristic complete discrete valuation ring with perfect residue field.

A refinement of the rank 1 Abelian Stark conjecture has been formulated by B. Gross. This conjecture predicts some ${\frak p}$-adic analytic nature of a modification of the Stark unit. The conjecture makes perfect sense even when ${\frak p}$ is an Archimedean place. Here we consider the conjecture when ${\frak p}$ is a real place, and interpret it in terms of 2-adic properties of special values of L-functions. We prove the conjecture for CM extensions; here the original Stark conjecture is uninteresting, but the refined conjecture is nontrivial. In more generality, we show that, under mild hypotheses, if the subgroup of the Galois group generated by complex conjugations has less than full rank, then the refined conjecture implies that the Stark unit should be a square. This phenomenon has been discovered by Dummit and Hayes in a particular type of situation. We show that it should hold in much greater generality.

The purpose of this paper is to extend the explicit geometric evaluation of semisimple orbital integrals for smooth kernels for the Casimir operator obtained by the first author to the case of kernels for arbitrary elements in the center of the enveloping algebra.

Let $G$ be a complex, semisimple, simply connected algebraic group with Lie algebra ${\frak g}$. We extend scalars to the power series field in one variable ${\rm C}((\pi))$, and consider the space of Iwahori subalgebras containing a fixed nil-elliptic element of ${\frak g} \otimes {\rm C}((\pi))$, i.e. fixed point varieties on the full affine flag manifold. We define representations of the affine Weyl group in the homology of these varieties, generalizing Kazhdan and Lusztig's topological construction of Springer's representations to the affine context.
