In this paper, we establish a vanishing theorem of Nadel type for the Witt multiplier ideals on threefolds over perfect fields of characteristic larger than five. As an application, if a projective normal threefold over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ is not klt and its canonical divisor is anti-ample, then the number of the rational points on the klt-locus is divisible by $q$.

Let G be a complex linear algebraic group and ρ:G → GL(V) a finite dimensional rational representation. Assume that G is connected and reductive, and that V has an open G-orbit. Let f in C[V] be a non-zero relative invariant with character ϕ ∈ Hom (G, C$^×$), meaning that f ˆ ρ (g) =ϕ (g) f for all g in G. Choose a non-zero relative invariant f$^v$ in C[V$^v$], with character ϕ$^-1$, for the dual representation ρ$^v$:G → GL(V$^v$). Roughly, the fundamental theorem of the theory of prehomogeneous vector spaces due to M. Sato says that the Fourier transform of |f|$^s$equals |f$^v$|$^-s$ up to some factors. The purpose of the present paper is to study a finite field analogue of Sato‘s theorem and to give a completely explicit description of the Fourier transform assuming that the characteristic of the base field F$_q$ is large enough. Now |f|$^s$ is replaced by χ (f), with χ in Hom (F$_q$$^×$, C$^×$), and the factors involve Gauss sums, the Bernstein–Sato polynomial b(s) of f, and the parity of the split rank of the isotropy group at v$^v$∈ V$^v(F<math>_q$). We also express this parity in terms of the quadratic residue of the discriminant of the Hessian of log f$^v$ (v$^v$). Moreover we prove a conjecture of N. Kawanaka on the number of integer roots of b(s).

We study a family of K3 surfaces which have a big automorphism group. We begin with generalisations of Silverman's results: construction of canonical heights, density of rational points in one orbit,… We continue the study in estimating the density of rational points on the orbiting rational curves; this estimate is compatible with Batyrev–Manin conjecture. Moreover we settle, under more geometric hypothesis, the number of rational points of such surfaces of bounded height.

Let $\mathbb {V}$ be a polarized variation of Hodge structure over a smooth complex quasi-projective variety $S$. In this paper, we give a complete description of the typical Hodge locus for such variations. We prove that it is either empty or equidistributed with respect to a natural differential form, the pull–push form. In particular, it is always analytically dense when the pull–push form does not vanish. When the weight is two, the Hodge numbers are $(q,p,q)$ and the dimension of $S$ is least $rq$, we prove that the typical locus where the Picard rank is at least $r$ is equidistributed in $S$ with respect to the volume form $c_q^r$, where $c_q$ is the $q$th Chern form of the Hodge bundle. We obtain also several equidistribution results of the typical locus in Shimura varieties: a criterion for the density of the typical Hodge loci of a variety in $\mathcal {A}_g$, equidistribution of certain families of CM points and equidistribution of Hecke translates of curves and surfaces in $\mathcal {A}_g$. These results are proved in the much broader context of dynamics on homogeneous spaces of Lie groups which are of independent interest. The pull–push form appears in this greater generality, we provide several tools to determine it, and we compute it in many examples.

A log symplectic manifold is a complex manifold equipped with a complex symplectic form that has simple poles on a hypersurface. The possible singularities of such a hypersurface are heavily constrained. We introduce the notion of an elliptic point of a log symplectic structure, which is a singular point at which a natural transversality condition involving the modular vector field is satisfied, and we prove a local normal form for such points that involves the simple elliptic surface singularities $\widetilde{E}_{6},\widetilde{E}_{7}$ and $\widetilde{E}_{8}$. Our main application is to the classification of Poisson brackets on Fano fourfolds. For example, we show that Feigin and Odesskii’s Poisson structures of type $q_{5,1}$ are the only log symplectic structures on projective four-space whose singular points are all elliptic.

It is shown that the Fourier–Whittaker coefficients of Eisenstein series on the n-fold cover of GL(n) are L-functions, improving prior results of T. Suzuki.

Derived equivalences of twisted K3 surfaces induce twisted Hodge isometries between them; that is, isomorphisms of their cohomologies which respect certain natural lattice structures and Hodge structures. We prove a criterion for when a given Hodge isometry arises in this way. In particular, we describe the image of the representation which associates to any autoequivalence of a twisted K3 surface its realization in cohomology: this image is a subgroup of index $1$ or $2$ in the group of all Hodge isometries of the twisted K3 surface. We show that both indices can occur.

For a prime $p$, let $\hat{F}_{p}$ be a finitely generated free pro-$p$-group of rank at least $2$. We show that the second discrete homology group $H_{2}(\hat{F}_{p},\mathbb{Z}/p)$ is an uncountable $\mathbb{Z}/p$-vector space. This answers a problem of A. K. Bousfield.

For a real Enriques surface $Y$ we prove that every homology class in $H_1(Y(R), Z/2)$ can be represented by a real algebraic curve if and only if all connected components of $Y(R)$ are orientable. Furthermore, we give a characterization of real Enriques surfaces which are Galois-Maximal and/or Z-Galois-Maximal and we determine the Brauer group of any real Enriques surface $Y$.

A non-Abelian generalization of local class field theory, which can describe non-abelian Galois groups in terms of the ground field, is given. The absolute Galois group of a local field is canonically defined up to an inner automorphism and the natural approach of describing class functions on it leads to Langland's philosophy. Another way to describe the absolute Galois group is to rigidify its structure by means of an arbitrary lifting of the Frobenius automorphism. This point of view is used in the metabelian local class field theory of Koch and de Shalit and its generalization by Gurevich. Iterating a slightly modified version of metabelian local class field theory on some fields of norms leads to a ‘non-abelian local class field theory’.

Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over a field $k$. Let $R:=\operatorname{End}E$. There is a functor $\mathscr{H}\!\mathit{om}_{R}(-,E)$ from the category of finitely presented torsion-free left $R$-modules to the category of abelian varieties isogenous to a power of $E$, and a functor $\operatorname{Hom}(-,E)$ in the opposite direction. We prove necessary and sufficient conditions on $E$ for these functors to be equivalences of categories. We also prove a partial generalization in which $E$ is replaced by a suitable higher-dimensional abelian variety over $\mathbb{F}_{p}$.

The goal of this paper is to prove that if certain ‘standard’ conjectures on motives over algebraically closed fields hold, then over any ‘reasonable’ scheme $S$ there exists a motivic$t$-structure for the category $\text{DM}_{c}(S)$ of relative Voevodsky’s motives (to be more precise, for the Beilinson motives described by Cisinski and Deglise). If $S$ is of finite type over a field, then the heart of this $t$-structure (the category of mixed motivic sheaves over $S$) is endowed with a weight filtration with semisimple factors. We also prove a certain ‘motivic decomposition theorem’ (assuming the conjectures mentioned) and characterize semisimple motivic sheaves over $S$ in terms of those over its residue fields. Our main tool is the theory of weight structures. We actually prove somewhat more than the existence of a weight filtration for mixed motivic sheaves: we prove that the motivic $t$-structure is transversal to the Chow weight structure for $\text{DM}_{c}(S)$ (that was introduced previously by Hébert and the author). We also deduce several properties of mixed motivic sheaves from this fact. Our reasoning relies on the degeneration of Chow weight spectral sequences for ‘perverse étale homology’ (which we prove unconditionally); this statement also yields the existence of the Chow weight filtration for such (co)homology that is strictly restricted by (‘motivic’) morphisms.

We extend a result of Vojta on height inequalities for algebraic points on curves over function fields to include the case of positive characteristic. The main tool used is the Kodaira—Spencer map and destabilizing flags for vector bundles on curves.

We give a purity result for two kinds of exponential sums of the type $\sum_{x\in k^n}\psi(f(x))$, where k is a finite field of characteristic p and $\psi:k\to{\mathbb C}^\star$ is a non-trivial additive character. In the first case, $f\in k[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ is a polynomial of degree divisible by p whose highest-degree homogeneous form defines a non-singular projective hypersurface, and in the second case, f is a polynomial of degree prime to p whose highest-degree homogeneous form defines a projective hypersurface with isolated singularities.

The aim of this paper is to establish exponential mixing of frame flows for convex cocompact hyperbolic manifolds of arbitrary dimension with respect to the Bowen–Margulis–Sullivan measure. Some immediate applications include an asymptotic formula for matrix coefficients with an exponential error term as well as the exponential equidistribution of holonomy of closed geodesics. The main technical result is a spectral bound on transfer operators twisted by holonomy, which we obtain by building on Dolgopyat's method.

We apply results from both contact topology and exceptional surgery theory to study when Legendrian surgery on a knot yields a reducible manifold. As an application, we show that a reducible surgery on a non-cabled positive knot of genus $g$ must have slope $2g-1$, leading to a proof of the cabling conjecture for positive knots of genus 2. Our techniques also produce bounds on the maximum Thurston–Bennequin numbers of cables.

A recent result of Eisenbud–Schreyer and Boij–Söderberg proves that the Betti diagram of any graded module decomposes as a positive rational linear combination of pure diagrams. When does this numerical decomposition correspond to an actual filtration of the minimal free resolution? Our main result gives a sufficient condition for this to happen. We apply it to show the non-existence of free resolutions with some plausible-looking Betti diagrams and to study the semigroup of quiver representations of the simplest ‘wild’ quiver.

For cohomological (respectively homological) coefficient systems ${\mathcal F}$ (respectively ${\mathcal V}$) on affine buildings X with Coxeter data of type $\widetilde{A}_d$, we give for any $k\ge1$ a sufficient local criterion which implies $H^k(X,{\mathcal F})=0$ (respectively $H_k(X,{\mathcal V})=0$). Using this criterion we prove a conjecture of de Shalit on the acyclicity of coefficient systems attached to hyperplane arrangements on the Bruhat–Tits building of the general linear group over a local field. We also generalize an acyclicity theorem of Schneider and Stuhler on coefficient systems attached to representations.

In this paper we compute the topological Hochschild homology of quotients of discrete valuation rings (DVRs). Along the way we give a short argument for Bökstedt periodicity and generalizations over various other bases. Our strategy also gives a very efficient way to redo the computations of $\operatorname {THH}$ (respectively, logarithmic $\operatorname {THH}$) of complete DVRs originally due to Lindenstrauss and Madsen (respectively, Hesselholt and Madsen).

Cluster algebras give rise to a class of Gorenstein rings which enjoy a large amount of symmetry. Concentrating on the rank 2 cases, we show how cluster varieties can be used to construct many interesting projective algebraic varieties. Our main application is then to construct hundreds of families of Fano 3-folds in codimensions 4 and 5. In particular, for Fano 3-folds in codimension 4 we construct at least one family for 187 of the 206 possible Hilbert polynomials contained in the Graded Ring Database.
