We construct a formal connection on the Aomoto complex of an arrangement of hyperplanes, and use it to study the Gauss–Manin connection for the moduli space of the arrangement in the cohomology of a complex rank one local system. We prove that the eigenvalues of the Gauss–Manin connection are integral linear combinations of the weights which define the local system.

For a smooth projective variety $X$ of dimension $n$ in a projective space ${\bb P}^N$ defined over an algebraically closed field $k$, the Gauss map is a morphism from $X$ to the Grassmannian of $n$-plans in ${\bb P}^N$sending $x \in X$ to the embedded tangent space $T_xX \subset {\bb P}^N$. The purpose of this paper is to prove the generic injectivity of Gauss maps in positive characteristic for two cases; (1) weighted complete intersections of dimension $n \geqslant 3$ of general type; (2) surfaces or 3-folds with $\mu$-semistable tangent bundles; based on a criterion of Kaji by looking at the stability of Frobenius pull-backs of their tangent bundles. The first result implies that a conjecture of Kleiman-Piene is true in case $X$ is of general type of dimension $n \geqslant 3$. The second result is a generalization of the injectivity for curves.

The principal aim of this article is to attach and study $p$-adic $L$-functions to cohomological cuspidal automorphic representations $\Pi$ of $\operatorname {GL}_{2n}$ over a totally real field $F$ admitting a Shalika model. We use a modular symbol approach, along the global lines of the work of Ash and Ginzburg, but our results are more definitive because we draw heavily upon the methods used in the recent and separate works of all three authors. By construction, our $p$-adic $L$-functions are distributions on the Galois group of the maximal abelian extension of $F$ unramified outside $p\infty$. Moreover, we work under a weaker Panchishkine-type condition on $\Pi _p$ rather than the full ordinariness condition. Finally, we prove the so-called Manin relations between the $p$-adic $L$-functions at all critical points. This has the striking consequence that, given a unitary $\Pi$ whose standard $L$-function admits at least two critical points, and given a prime $p$ such that $\Pi _p$ is ordinary, the central critical value $L(\frac {1}{2}, \Pi \otimes \chi )$ is non-zero for all except finitely many Dirichlet characters $\chi$ of $p$-power conductor.

For V a two-dimensional p-adic representation of Gℚp, we denote by B(V ) the admissible unitary representation of GL2(ℚp) attached to V under the p-adic local Langlands correspondence of GL2(ℚp) initiated by Breuil. In this paper, building on the works of Berger–Breuil and Colmez, we determine the locally analytic vectors B(V )an of B (V ) when V is irreducible, crystabelian and Frobenius semisimple with distinct Hodge–Tate weights; this proves a conjecture of Breuil. Using this result, we verify Emerton’s conjecture that dim Ref η⊗ψ (V )=dim Exp η∣⋅∣⊗xψ (B (V )an ⊗(x∣⋅∣∘det )) for those V which are irreducible, crystabelian and Frobenius semisimple.

We prove the strong Suslin reciprocity law conjectured by A. Goncharov. The Suslin reciprocity law is a generalization of the Weil reciprocity law to higher Milnor $K$-theory. The Milnor $K$-groups can be identified with the top cohomology groups of the polylogarithmic motivic complexes; Goncharov's conjecture predicts the existence of a contracting homotopy underlying Suslin reciprocity. The main ingredient of the proof is a homotopy invariance theorem for the cohomology of the polylogarithmic motivic complexes in the ‘next to Milnor’ degree. We apply these results to the theory of scissors congruences of hyperbolic polytopes. For every triple of rational functions on a compact projective curve over $\mathbb {C}$ we construct a hyperbolic polytope (defined up to scissors congruence). The hyperbolic volume and the Dehn invariant of this polytope can be computed directly from the triple of rational functions on the curve.

We extend our previous work in collaboration with Ngô Bao Châu and give a fixed point formula for the elliptic part of moduli spaces of $G$-shtukas with arbitrary modifications. Our formula is similar to the fixed point formula of Kottwitz for certain Shimura varieties. Our method is inspired by that of Kottwitz and simpler than that of Lafforgue for the fixed point formula of the moduli space of Drinfeld $\text{GL} (r)$-shtukas.

We define a suitably tame class of singular symplectic curves in 4-manifolds, namely those whose singularities are modeled on complex curve singularities. We study the corresponding symplectic isotopy problem, with a focus on rational curves with irreducible singularities (rational cuspidal curves) in the complex projective plane. We prove that every such curve is isotopic to a complex curve in degrees up to five, and for curves with one singularity whose link is a torus knot. Classification results of symplectic isotopy classes rely on pseudo-holomorphic curves together with a symplectic version of birational geometry of log pairs and techniques from four-dimensional topology.

We show that a $\mathbb{P}$-object and simple configurations of $\mathbb{P}$-objects have a formal derived endomorphism algebra. Hence the triangulated category (classically) generated by such objects is independent of the ambient triangulated category. We also observe that the category generated by the structure sheaf of a smooth projective variety over the complex numbers only depends on its graded cohomology algebra.

We study Tate motives with integral coefficients through the lens of tensor triangular geometry. For some base fields, including $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ and $\overline{\mathbb{F}_{p}}$, we arrive at a complete description of the tensor triangular spectrum and a classification of the thick tensor ideals.

In this paper, we prove two versions of an arithmetic analogue of Bezout's theorem, subject to some technical restrictions. The basic formula proven is deg(V)h(X∩Y)=h(X)deg(Y)+h(Y)deg(X)+O(1), where X and Y are algebraic cycles varying in properly intersecting families on a regular subvariety VS⊂PSN. The theorem is inspired by the arithmetic Bezout inequality of Bost, Gillet, and Soulé, but improve upon it in two ways. First, we obtain an equality up to O(1) as the intersecting cycles vary in projective families. Second, we generalise this result to intersections of divisors on any regular projective arithmetic variety.

We prove that if W and W′ are non-zero B-pairs whose tensor product is crystalline (or semi-stable or de Rham or Hodge–Tate), then there exists a character μ such that W(μ−1) and W′(μ) are crystalline (or semi-stable or de Rham or Hodge–Tate). We also prove that if W is a B-pair and if F is a Schur functor (for example Sym n or Λn) such that F(W) is crystalline (or semi-stable or de Rham or Hodge–Tate) and if the rank of W is sufficiently large, then there is a character μ such that W(μ−1) is crystalline (or semi-stable or de Rham or Hodge–Tate). In particular, these results apply to p-adic representations.

Let X/S be a smooth morphism of schemes in characteristic p and let $(E,\nabla)$ be a sheaf of $\mathcal{O}_{X}$-modules with integrable connection on X. We give a formula for the cohomology sheaves of the de Rham complex of $(E,\nabla)$ in terms of a Higgs complex constructed from the p-curvature of $(E,\nabla)$. This formula generalizes the classical Cartier isomorphism, with which it agrees when $(E,\nabla)$ is the constant connection.

We define here an analogue, for a semi-stable group scheme whose generic fiber is an abelian variety, of M. J. Taylor's class-invariant homomorphism (defined for abelian schemes), and we give a geometric description of it. Then we extend a result of Taylor, Srivastav, Agboola and Pappas concerning the kernel of this homomorphism in the case of an elliptic curve.

In this article, we give an analytic construction of ALF hyperkähler metrics on smooth deformations of the Kleinian singularity $\mathbb{C}^{2}/{\mathcal{D}}_{k}$, with ${\mathcal{D}}_{k}$ the binary dihedral group of order $4k$, $k\geqslant 2$. More precisely, we start from the ALE hyperkähler metrics constructed on these spaces by Kronheimer, and use analytic methods, e.g. resolution of a Monge–Ampère equation, to produce ALF hyperkähler metrics with the same associated Kähler classes.

We present a Langlands dual realization of the putative category of affine character sheaves. Namely, we calculate the categorical center and trace (also known as the Drinfeld center and trace, or categorical Hochschild cohomology and homology) of the affine Hecke category starting from its spectral presentation. The resulting categories comprise coherent sheaves on the commuting stack of local systems on the two-torus satisfying prescribed support conditions, in particular singular support conditions, which appear in recent advances in the geometric Langlands program. The key technical tools in our arguments are a new descent theory for coherent sheaves or ${\mathcal{D}}$-modules with prescribed singular support and the theory of integral transforms for coherent sheaves developed in the companion paper by Ben-Zvi et al. [Integral transforms for coherent sheaves, J. Eur. Math. Soc. (JEMS), to appear].

We use geometric information obtained from the generic initial ideal of a hyperplane section of a surface in ${\bb P}^4$ not of general type to bound the degree of such a surface.

The paper extends the rigidity of the mixing expanding repellers theorem of D. Sullivan announced at the 1986 IMC. We show that, for a regular conformal, satisfying the ‘Open Set Condition’, iterated function system of countably many holomorphic contractions of an open connected subset of a complex plane, the Radon–Nikodym derivative dμ/dm has a real-analytic extension on an open neighbourhood of the limit set of this system, where m is the conformal measure and μ is the unique probability invariant measure equivalent with m. Next, we introduce the concept of nonlinearity for iterated function systems of countably many holomorphic contractions. Several necessary and sufficient conditions for nonlinearity are established. We prove the following rigidity result: If h, the topological conjugacy between two nonlinear systems F and G, transports the conformal measure mF to the equivalence class of the conformal measure mG, then h has a conformal extension on an open neighbourhood of the limit set of the system F. Finally, we prove that the hyperbolic system associated to a given parabolic system of countably many holomorphic contractions is nonlinear, which allows us to extend our rigidity result to the case of parabolic systems.

It is proved that the index of a Fredholm operator between non-Archimedean Fréchet spaces is preserved under compact perturbations. A similar result is shown for Fredholm operators between non-Archimedean polar regular LF-spaces.

Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a global field $K$ of characteristic $p\geqslant 0$. If $A$ has nontrivial (respectively full) $K$-rational $l$-torsion for a prime $l\neq p$, we exploit the fppf cohomological interpretation of the $l$-Selmer group $\text{Sel}_{l}\,A$ to bound $\#\text{Sel}_{l}\,A$ from below (respectively above) in terms of the cardinality of the $l$-torsion subgroup of the ideal class group of $K$. Applied over families of finite extensions of $K$, the bounds relate the growth of Selmer groups and class groups. For function fields, this technique proves the unboundedness of $l$-ranks of class groups of quadratic extensions of every $K$ containing a fixed finite field $\mathbb{F}_{p^{n}}$ (depending on $l$). For number fields, it suggests a new approach to the Iwasawa ${\it\mu}=0$ conjecture through inequalities, valid when $A(K)[l]\neq 0$, between Iwasawa invariants governing the growth of Selmer groups and class groups in a $\mathbb{Z}_{l}$-extension.

Let $X\subset \mathbb{P}^{4}$ be a terminal factorial quartic $3$-fold. If $X$ is non-singular, $X$ is birationally rigid, i.e. the classical minimal model program on any terminal $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial projective variety $Z$ birational to $X$ always terminates with $X$. This no longer holds when $X$ is singular, but very few examples of non-rigid factorial quartics are known. In this article, we first bound the local analytic type of singularities that may occur on a terminal factorial quartic hypersurface $X\subset \mathbb{P}^{4}$. A singular point on such a hypersurface is of type $cA_{n}$ ($n\geqslant 1$), or of type $cD_{m}$ ($m\geqslant 4$) or of type $cE_{6},cE_{7}$ or $cE_{8}$. We first show that if $(P\in X)$ is of type $cA_{n}$, $n$ is at most $7$ and, if $(P\in X)$ is of type $cD_{m}$, $m$ is at most $8$. We then construct examples of non-rigid factorial quartic hypersurfaces whose singular loci consist (a) of a single point of type $cA_{n}$ for $2\leqslant n\leqslant 7$, (b) of a single point of type $cD_{m}$ for $m=4$ or $5$ and (c) of a single point of type $cE_{k}$ for $k=6,7$ or $8$.
