We prove Poincaré duality for logarithmic crystalline cohomology of log smooth schemes whose underlying schemes are reduced. This is a generalization of the result of P. Berthelot for usual smooth schemes and that of O. Hyodo for the special fibers of semi-stable families and trivial coefficients.

We prove that every birationally superrigid Fano variety whose alpha invariant is greater than (respectively no smaller than) $\frac{1}{2}$ is K-stable (respectively K-semistable). We also prove that the alpha invariant of a birationally superrigid Fano variety of dimension $n$ is at least $1/(n+1)$ (under mild assumptions) and that the moduli space (if it exists) of birationally superrigid Fano varieties is separated.

We study a function field analog of Chebyshev’s bias. Our results, as well as their proofs, are similar to those of Rubinstein and Sarnak in the case of the rational number field. Following Rubinstein and Sarnak, we introduce the grand simplicity hypothesis (GSH), a certain hypothesis on the inverse zeros of Dirichlet L-series of a polynomial ring over a finite field. Under this hypothesis, we investigate how primes, that is, irreducible monic polynomials in a polynomial ring over a finite field, are distributed in a given set of residue classes modulo a fixed monic polynomial. In particular, we prove under the GSH that, like the number field case, primes are biased toward quadratic nonresidues. Unlike the number field case, the GSH can be proved to hold in some cases and can be violated in some other cases. Also, under the GSH, we give the necessary and sufficient conditions for which primes are unbiased and describe certain central limit behaviors as the degree of modulus under consideration tends to infinity, all of which have been established in the number field case by Rubinstein and Sarnak.

Let $K$ be the field of fractions of a local Henselian discrete valuation ring ${\mathcal{O}}_{K}$ of characteristic zero with perfect residue field $k$. Assuming potential semi-stable reduction, we show that an unramified Galois action on the second $\ell$-adic cohomology group of a K3 surface over $K$ implies that the surface has good reduction after a finite and unramified extension. We give examples where this unramified extension is really needed. Moreover, we give applications to good reduction after tame extensions and Kuga–Satake Abelian varieties. On our way, we settle existence and termination of certain flops in mixed characteristic, and study group actions and their quotients on models of varieties.

We show that the limit of a one-parameter admissible normal function with no singularities lies in a non-classical sub-object of the limiting intermediate Jacobian. Using this, we construct a Hausdorff slit analytic space, with complex Lie group fibres, which ‘graphs’ such normal functions. For singular normal functions, an extension of the sub-object by a finite group leads to the Néron models. When the normal function comes from geometry, that is, a family of algebraic cycles on a semistably degenerating family of varieties, its limit may be interpreted via the Abel–Jacobi map on motivic cohomology of the singular fibre, hence via regulators on K-groups of its substrata. Two examples are worked out in detail, for families of 1-cycles on CY and abelian 3-folds, where this produces interesting arithmetic constraints on such limits. We also show how to compute the finite ‘singularity group’ in the geometric setting.

We show that every non-elementary hyperbolic group $\G $ admits a proper affine isometric action on $L^p(\bd \G \times \bd \G )$, where $\bd \G $ denotes the boundary of $\G $ and $p$ is large enough. Our construction involves a $\G $-invariant measure on $\bd \G \times \bd \G $ analogous to the Bowen–Margulis measure from the ${\rm CAT}(-1)$ setting, as well as a geometric, Busemann-type cocycle. We also deduce that $\G $ admits a proper affine isometric action on the first $\ell ^p$-cohomology group $H^1_{(p)}(\G )$ for large enough $p$.

We present an elementary proof that given a general collection of d points in Pn the linear system of cubics singular on each point has the expected codimension except when n=4 and d=7. In that case the cubic is unique. This, together with previous work of the author, gives a proof of the Alexander–Hirschowitz interpolation theorem.

We resolve the local semistable reduction problem for overconvergent F-isocrystals at monomial valuations (Abhyankar valuations of height 1 and residue transcendence degree zero). We first introduce a higher-dimensional analogue of the generic radius of convergence for a p-adic differential module, which obeys a convexity property. We then combine this convexity property with a form of the p-adic local monodromy theorem for so-called fake annuli.

In this paper we study consequences of the results of Kang et al. [Monoidal categorification of cluster algebras, J. Amer. Math. Soc. 31 (2018), 349–426] on a monoidal categorification of the unipotent quantum coordinate ring $A_{q}(\mathfrak{n}(w))$ together with the Laurent phenomenon of cluster algebras. We show that if a simple module $S$ in the category ${\mathcal{C}}_{w}$ strongly commutes with all the cluster variables in a cluster $[\mathscr{C}]$, then $[S]$ is a cluster monomial in $[\mathscr{C}]$. If $S$ strongly commutes with cluster variables except for exactly one cluster variable $[M_{k}]$, then $[S]$ is either a cluster monomial in $[\mathscr{C}]$ or a cluster monomial in $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{k}([\mathscr{C}])$. We give a new proof of the fact that the upper global basis is a common triangular basis (in the sense of Qin [Triangular bases in quantum cluster algebras and monoidal categorification conjectures, Duke Math. 166 (2017), 2337–2442]) of the localization $\widetilde{A}_{q}(\mathfrak{n}(w))$ of $A_{q}(\mathfrak{n}(w))$ at the frozen variables. A characterization on the commutativity of a simple module $S$ with cluster variables in a cluster $[\mathscr{C}]$ is given in terms of the denominator vector of $[S]$ with respect to the cluster $[\mathscr{C}]$.

In this paper we examine different problems regarding complete intersection varieties of high multidegree in a smooth complex projective variety. First we prove an existence theorem for jet differential equations that generalizes a theorem of Diverio. Then we show how one can deduce hyperbolicity for generic complete intersections of high multidegree and high codimension from the known results on hypersurfaces. Finally, motivated by a conjecture of Debarre, we focus on the positivity of the cotangent bundle of complete intersections, and prove some results towards this conjecture; among other things, we prove that a generic complete intersection surface of high multidegree in a projective space of dimension at least four has an ample cotangent bundle.

The Nash problem asks about the existence of a correspondence between families of arcs through singularities of complex varieties and certain types of divisorial valuations. It has been positively settled in dimension 2 by Fernández de Bobadilla and Pe Pereira, and it was shown to have a negative answer in all dimensions ${\geq }4$ by Ishii and Kollár. In this note we discuss examples which show that the problem has a negative answer in dimension 3 as well. These examples also bring to light the different nature of the problem depending on whether it is formulated in the algebraic setting or in the analytic setting.

The normal residual finiteness growth of a group quantifies how well approximated the group is by its finite quotients. We show that any S-arithmetic subgroup of a higher rank Chevalley group G has normal residual finiteness growth ndim (G).

We show that unipotent overconvergent isocrystals are algebraic and that the category of unipotent overconvergent isocrystals has a Frobenius automorphism. We also prove a structure theorem for unipotent overconvergent F-isocrystals over an open subset of the line, analogous to Dieudonné–Manin decomposition theorem for F-isocrystals.

The main theorem of the author’s thesis suggests that it should be possible to lift the Kolyvagin systems of Stark units, constructed by the author in an earlier paper, to a Kolyvagin system over the cyclotomic Iwasawa algebra. In this paper, we verify that this is indeed the case. This construction of Kolyvagin systems over the cyclotomic Iwasawa algebra from Stark units provides the first example towards a more systematic study of Kolyvagin system theory over an Iwasawa algebra when the core Selmer rank (in the sense of Mazur and Rubin) is greater than one. As a result of this construction, we reduce the main conjectures of Iwasawa theory for totally real fields to a statement in the context of local Iwasawa theory, assuming the truth of the Rubin–Stark conjecture and Leopoldt’s conjecture. This statement in the local Iwasawa theory context turns out to be interesting in its own right, as it suggests a relation between the solutions to p-adic and complex Stark conjectures.

In this paper we determine the irreducible components of the Hilbert schemes H4,g of locally Cohen-Macaulay space curves of degree four and arbitrary arithmetic genus g: there are roughly ∼(g2/24) of them, most of which are families of multiplicity structures on lines. We give deformations which show that these Hilbert schemes are connected. For g≤−3 we exhibit a component that is disjoint from the component of extremal curves and use this to give a counterexample to a conjecture of Aït-Amrane and Perrin.

We prove Zhang’s dynamical Manin–Mumford conjecture and dynamical Bogomolov conjecture for dominant endomorphisms $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F7}$ of $(\mathbb{P}^{1})^{n}$ . We use the equidistribution theorem for points of small height with respect to an algebraic dynamical system, combined with an analysis of the symmetries of the Julia set for a rational function.

Let ${\rm\Gamma}$ be a finite subgroup of $\text{Sp}(V)$. In this article we count the number of symplectic resolutions admitted by the quotient singularity $V/{\rm\Gamma}$. Our approach is to compare the universal Poisson deformation of the symplectic quotient singularity with the deformation given by the Calogero–Moser space. In this way, we give a simple formula for the number of $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial terminalizations admitted by the symplectic quotient singularity in terms of the dimension of a certain Orlik–Solomon algebra naturally associated to the Calogero–Moser deformation. This dimension is explicitly calculated for all groups ${\rm\Gamma}$ for which it is known that $V/{\rm\Gamma}$ admits a symplectic resolution. As a consequence of our results, we confirm a conjecture of Ginzburg and Kaledin.

In this paper we propose and discuss implications of a general conjecture that there is a natural action of a rank 1 double affine Hecke algebra on the Kauffman bracket skein module of the complement of a knot $K\subset S^{3}$. We prove this in a number of nontrivial cases, including all $(2,2p+1)$ torus knots, the figure eight knot, and all 2-bridge knots (when $q=\pm 1$). As the main application of the conjecture, we construct three-variable polynomial knot invariants that specialize to the classical colored Jones polynomials introduced by Reshetikhin and Turaev. We also deduce some new properties of the classical Jones polynomials and prove that these hold for all knots (independently of the conjecture). We furthermore conjecture that the skein module of the unknot is a submodule of the skein module of an arbitrary knot. We confirm this for the same example knots, and we show that this implies that the colored Jones polynomials of $K$ satisfy an inhomogeneous recursion relation.

In the predecessor to this article, we used global equidistribution theorems to prove that given a correspondence between a modular curve and an elliptic curve A, the intersection of any finite-rank subgroup of A with the set of CM-points of A is finite. In this article we apply local methods, involving the theory of arithmetic differential equations, to prove quantitative versions of a similar statement. The new methods apply also to certain infinite-rank subgroups, as well as to the situation where the set of CM-points is replaced by certain isogeny classes of points on the modular curve. Finally, we prove Shimura-curve analogues of these results.
