One-aminonaphthalene is sorbed onto the Na-saturated smectite clays, montmorillonite and hectorite, by cation exchange. In the presence of Fe3+, either in the clay structure or on the clay surface, sorption is followed by the formation of a blue-colored complex, with the continuous disappearance of aminonaphthalene from solution and the clay surface. The rate of aminonaphthalene disappearance decreases as pH increases. With time, four major products that appear to be structural isomers of N(4-aminonaphthyl)-l-naphthylamine are produced. A simplified model of this transformation is suggested to be the oxidation by Fe3+ of sorbed aminonaphthalene forming a radical cation-clay complex. A subsequent reaction between the radical-cation and a neutral aminonaphthalene molecule takes place, with the products being strongly sorbed to the clay surface.

The effect of heat treatments on the total charge and water adsorption by Ca-, Na- and Li-saturated kaolinite was studied using extraction techniques and thermal gravimetric analysis, respectively. Measurements of cation exchange capacity indicated that the total charge of Li-kaolinite was reduced by approximately 50% after heating to 110 or 130°C. In contrast, the total charge of Ca-kaolinite remained essentially constant while that of Na-kaolinite decreased slightly. Water adsorption and desorption on Ca- and Li-kaolinite following heat treatments at 150°C were consistent with the total charge of the respective kaolinites. Ion extraction of Li-kaolinite using NH4C1 revealed that only 6% of the Li remained exchangeable after heating, while Al and H were released. Thus, non-exchangeable Li ions not only reduced the total charge of the kaolinite but also displaced Al and H from the kaolinite structure. Infrared spectroscopy also indicated that Li migrated into the kaolinite structure and replaced a portion of the Al from the octahedral sheet. The results presented here indicate that Li-kaolinite represents a surface of reduced charge rather than a surface free of cation-hydration effects. Therefore, Li-kaolinite is not recommended as a reference for the study of vapor-phase adsorption, and conclusions based on such a reference material should be reevaluated.

Core KM-3 at Searles Lake, California, comprises 693.4 m of lacustrine sediments deposited over the past 3.2 m.y. The lake water evolved from moderately saline, slightly alkaline, and dominated by Na, Ca, Cl, SO4, and HCO3 + CO3 to a highly alkaline brine dominated by Na and CO, ions. Sediments are chiefly muds and evaporites. Montmorillonite and illite are the principal detrital clay minerals supplied to Searles Lake at present and probably during the late Pliocene and Pleistocene.

The drill core is divided into three diagenetic zones on the basis of clay-mineral reactions. The upper zone (0-291.1 m) contains authigenic Fe-illite, Mg-smectite, K-feldspar, and analcime, which average 60–70% of the <2-μm silicate fraction of mud samples. The principal silicate reactants are detrital montmorillonite and kaolinite, which have been largely consumed. The middle zone (291.1–541.6 m) also contains authigenic Fe-illite, Mg-smectite, K-feldspar, and analcime, but they form only 20 to 30% of the <2-μm silicate fraction, and considerable detrital montmorillonite and kaolinite remain unaltered. In muds of the lower zone (541.6–693.4 m), a small amount of clinoptilolite is the only authigenic silicate mineral identified, although authigenic montmorillonite probably coexists here as well. Vitric ash is the silicate reactant, and detrital clay minerals apparently remain unaltered in the lower zone.

Diagenetic zoning reflects the pore-water chemistry, in which pH may have been the most important parameter. Sediments of the upper zone were deposited in highly alkaline lakes of variable salinity, and sinking brines with a pH of 9.0–10.0 have saturated all sediments. Sediments of the middle zone were deposited in lakes of moderate to high salinity. The pH was overall lower than in the upper zone, although it probably exceeded 9.0, at least locally, during silicate diagenesis. Moderate salinity and a slightly alkaline pH (~ 7.5–8.0) are inferred for both the lake and pore water of the lower zone.

Oxygen-isotope values of authigenic Fe-illite, Mg-smectite, and K-feldspar, and phillipsite in the upper diagenetic zone reflect a high degree of evaporative concentration and presumably of salinity. Equilibrium water values calculated for 22°C from the oxygen-isotopic composition of authigenic phyllosilicates range from −3.5 to +1.9%, averaging −1.2% (SMOW). Higher salinities are suggested for K-feldspar, for which water values range from +1.8 to +4.8%, averaging +3.4‰ The water value for phillipsite is +0.3‰ By comparison, rainfall at Searles Lake has an average δ18O value of about −9.8%, and a brine sample has a value of +4.0‰

Mud samples of the middle and upper diagenetic zones tend to be rich in Fe-illite or Mg-smectite, but not in both, indicating that the two minerals are favored to some extent by different environments. Fe-illite seems to be generally favored by oxidizing conditions and probably by a playa environment, and Mg-smectite seems to be favored by reducing conditions and an open-water environment. One strati-graphic unit of the upper zone does not fit this pattern and contains abundant Fe-illite in sediments of a deep perennial lake.

The modification of the external surface area and the two types of microporosity of palygorskite (structural and interfiber porosity) were examined as a function of the temperature of a vacuum thermal treatment to 500°C. The methods used included: controlled-transformation-rate thermal analysis, N2 and Ar low-temperature adsorption microcalorimetry, conventional and continuous gas-adsorption volumetry (for N2 and Ar) at 77 K and CO2 at 273 and 293 K, water vapor adsorption gravimetry, and immersion microcalorimetry in water. At temperatures < 100°C only 18% of the structural microporosity was available to N2, 13% to Ar, and 100% to CO2 at 273 K. In both experiments the channels filled at very low relative pressures. At temperatures between 70° and 130°C the structure folded, and the mineral transformed to anhydrous palygorskite, which showed no structural microporosity. The interfiber microporosity was found to be independent of the temperature treatment, and the external surface area decreased slightly from 65 to 54 m2/g. The water adsorption isotherms showed that the folding of the structure was reversible up to final outgassing temperatures >225°C.

Infrared spectra of adsorbed pyridine have been used to obtain qualitative information on the nature of the interaction of pyridine with different rhodium catalysts supported on palygorskite and silica. Based on these data, qualitative definitions of the adsorption sites of these catalysts have been deduced. The catalysts were prepared with natural palygorskite, and palygorskite dehydrated in vacuo at 150°C and 400°C. In this way, catalysts were obtained that had different water contents and, therefore, different acidities. Lewis-bound pyridine was detected by infrared spectroscopy from room temperature to 500°C. The greatest acidity was found in a catalyst prepared with the palygorskite support dehydrated at 150°C before preparation of the catalyst. With this catalyst, strongly hydrogen-bound pyridine was observed when evacuation was carried out at temperatures between 150°C and 300°C. Catalysts prepared with the palygorskite support pretreated at 400°C did not exhibit strongly hydrogen-bound pyridine, and Lewis acidity decreased significantly. As expected, hydrogen-bound pyridine was also detected for rhodium supported on silica. However, it was desorbed at temperatures below 150°C. The results of the acidity studies follow the same pattern as those for 1 -hexene double-bond migration under hydrogénation reaction conditions.

Use of a discriminant analysis has verified and grouped three suspected varieties of kaolinite found in kaolin-rich clay strata of late Paleocene to early Eocene age across north-central Mississippi. Initial identification of each type of kaolinite was based on clay-texture characteristics observed on scanning electron micrographs and the differences in pattern configurations of X-ray diffractograms. The discriminant function used for data treatment clearly segregated and grouped each variety. The discrimination variables were found to be the Hinckley index and, to a lesser extent, the Si4+ content relative to the Al3+ content.

The oldest variety is the Blue Mountain clay, composed of preserved hexagonal plates usually clustered into booklets with a vermiform texture. The Ashland variety, stratigraphically younger than the Blue Mountain clay, appears to have been derived from the erosion of the Blue Mountain clay. The Ashland cannot be recognized by any type of diagnostic texture, as it is made up of individual plates that have been corroded and abraded to the point where a hexagonal outline can no longer be recognized. The Sardis variety is the stratigraphically youngest of the three varieties and is at least a second, or possibly a third generation detrital product. The Sardis clay can be recognized by a distinct “ribbon” or “swirl” texture commonly found in ball clays.

Data from this study are not sufficient for complete petrogenetic interpretation. However, speculation on possible differences in depositional environments and modes of deposition can be based on the data at hand. The Blue Mountain variety is considered from previous studies to be primary. The Ashland variety is probably a first generation alluvial clay. The Sardis variety appears to be a multiple generation, detrital product that accumulated as part of overbank swamp deposits.

The nature of the siloxane surface in smectites was investigated by measuring the adsorption of aromatic hydrocarbons from water by organo-clays. The organo-clays were prepared by replacing the hydrophilic, inorganic exchange cations of a series of smectites with the small, hydrophobic organic cation, trimethylphenylammonium (TMPA). Smectites with a range in charge densities were used that resulted in different TMPA contents in the organo-clays. Adsorption isotherms of benzene, alkylbenzenes, and naphthalene from water by the TMPA-smectites indicated that sorption was inversely related to TMPA content. The Langmuir form of the isotherms suggests that the aromatic compounds adsorb to the clay surface. Possible adsorptive sites in TMPA-smectites are limited to the TMPA cations and the siloxane oxygen surfaces. Because sorption increased as layer charge and TMPA content decreased, the organic compounds must adsorb to the siloxane surfaces.

Calculations based on an adsorbed compound monolayer, which was estimated by fitting adsorption data to the Langmuir equation, and the N2 specific surface area of each TMPA-clay, indicate that the surface area occupied by each adsorbed molecule increases as the planar area of the molecule increases. This strongly indicates that the planar surfaces of the compounds adsorb directly to the clay surface. Apparently, the TMPA cations function to keep the smectite interlayers open. Interactions between the phenyl groups of TMPA cations on opposing interlayer clay surfaces may act to increase the size of the adsorptive regions. These results show that the siloxane surfaces of smectites can effectively adsorb aromatic hydrocarbons from water if the hydrophilic, inorganic exchange cations are replaced with small, hydrophobic organic cations. The strong adsorption of hydrophobic organic molecules from water demonstrates the hydrophobicity of the siloxane surfaces in smectites.

The catalytic power of Ca-nontronite (0.2–2 μm) for the polycondensation of phenols and glycine and the associated reactions that involve the ring cleavage of phenols and the decarboxylation and deamination of glycine was studied in systems free of microbial activity. At the end of a 90-hr reaction period, the amount of CO2 released from the Ca-nontronite-glycine-pyrogallol, Ca-nontronite-glycine-eatechol, and Ca-nontronite-glycine-hydroquinone systems were 5.1, 8.7, and 11.6 times higher, respectively, than those from the respective nontronite-free systems, showing the catalytic role of Ca-nontronite in the ring cleavage of phenols and the decarboxylation of glycine. The release of CO2 and NH3 from the Ca-nontronite-glycine system revealed that Ca-nontronite can catalyze decarboxylation and deamination of glycine. The ability of Ca-nontronite to catalyze the deamination of glycine was substantially enhanced by the presence of a phenol. The visible absorbances at both 472 and 664 nm of the supernatants, the total yields of N-containing humic polymers, and the fractions of glycine converted to nitrogenous polymers indicated that polycondensation of glycine and phenol was greatly catalyzed by Ca-nontronite. The total N-containing humic polymers formed in the systems decreased in the order: Ca-nontronite-glycine-pyrogallol > Ca-nontronite-glycine-cateehol > Ca-nontronite-glycine-hydroquinone > glycine-pyrogallol > glycine-hydroquinone > glycine-catechol. The infrared and electron spin resonance spectra of humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) formed in the supernatants of the reaction systems were quite similar to those of soil HA and FA. The catalytic power of Ca-nontronite in affecting the ring cleavage of phenols, deamination and decarboxylation of amino acids, and formation of humic substances derived from phenols with amino acids in soils and the related environments thus merits attention.

Recent data in the biological literature suggest that the natural zeolite erionite may be more tumorigenic than asbestos minerals. Because of its potential biological importance, a technique has been developed to facilitate detection of erionite in tuffaceous rocks to a lower limit of detection (LLD) between 100 and 500 ppm. The method involves the use of automated X-ray powder diffraction instrumentation with long count times, as much as 360 s/step. The presence of interfering phases, such as smectite or clinoptilolite, raises the LLD. Ethylene glycol solvation of smectite improves the LLD, and profile fitting with clinoptilolite-bearing mixtures improves quantification. Application of these methods to tuffs from central Turkey allowed improved detection and more accurate quantification compared with previous scanning electron microscope examinations. Use of these methods with tuffs from Yucca Mountain, Nevada, the potential site for the nation's first high-level radioactive waste repository, showed that erionite occurs sporadically. Erionite is found only in the altered zone directly above the lower vitrophyre of the Topopah Spring Member. This altered zone is anomalous in that is contains a variety of zeolites that are either rare or absent in other Yucca Mountain tuffs. It appears that erionite is restricted to fractures and must have formed under unusual and variable conditions in the altered zone.

In a study of “rana” soils of central Spain, hydroxy-interlayered 2:1 clay minerals were identified in the upper horizons and high-charge smectite in the lower horizons, with kaolinite the most abundant phyllosilicate. The high-charge smectite showed a basal spacing of 18 Å on Mg-saturation and glycerol solvation and 10 Å on K-saturation and air-drying. It is concentrated in the coarse fractions and appears to be basically a beidellite in the fine-silt fractions and a montmorillonite in the clay fractions. Pre-existing illite was probably transformed into hydroxy-interlayered 2:1 clays in the surface horizons, whereas high-charge smectite formed in the deeper horizons. These minerals, which were apparently not stable in the existing soil conditions, were the first stage in the degradation process of illite. The stable mineral in these soil profiles was kaolinite.
