The clay mineral textures, assemblages, formation mechanisms, and controlling geological parameters relating to alteration of silicic volcanic rocks by hydrothermal solutions, in core samples from the Broadlands-Ohaaki hydrothermal system, New Zealand, were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission and analytical electron microscopy (TEM/AEM). Mineralogical and textural relations of this active hydrothermal system, for which temperatures and fluid relations are well known, are equivalent to those in the Golden Cross hydrothermal gold deposit as described in Part 1.

XRD data show a sequence of clay minerals from smectite to a range of interstratified I-S to mica with increasing depth and temperature, on average. TEM observations are in general agreement with XRD data, especially with respect to relative proportions of illite (I)- and smectite (S)- like layers. TEM data also show that: (1) Smectite packets contain no discrete illite-like layers in samples identified as (Reichweite, R = 0) I-S by XRD. They coexist with separate packets of (R = 1) I-S. (2) A continuous range in I-S occurs from (R = 1) I-S with increasing proportion of illite-like layers, but at high illite-like layer contents there is a gap between I-S and illite. (3) 1M and 2M1 polytypes of mica coexist in separate packets, but the rare 1M polytype has a larger VIMg content.

The data imply that clay minerals formed by dissolution and neocrystallization directly from volcanic phases, although multiple reaction events can not be ruled out. Such “episodic” alteration produces a sequence of clay minerals identical to those of prograde diagenesis of pelitic sediments. This result implies that the presence of a continuous sequence is not definitive proof of continuous sequences of transformation as a function of time and continuous burial. Reaction progress of the clay-mineral sequence is in general accord with the known temperature gradient, but with significant and common exceptions. High porosity and permeability, both inherent in rock texture and local structure, are inferred to foster local reaction progress, as consistent with metastability of phases and the Ostwald step rule.

An internal standard X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis technique permits reproducible and accurate calculation of the mineral contents of rocks, including the major clay mineral families: Fe-rich chlorites + berthierine, Mg-rich chlorites, Fe-rich dioctahedral 2:1 clays and micas, Al-rich dioctahedral 2:1 clays and micas, and kaolinites. A single XRD pattern from an air-dried random specimen is used. Clays are quantified from their 060 reflections which are well resolved and insensitive to structural defects. Zincite is used as the internal standard instead of corundum, because its reflections are more conveniently located and stronger, allowing for a smaller amount of spike (10%). The grinding technique used produces powders free of grains coarser than 20 µm and suitable for obtaining random and rigid specimens.

Errors in accuracy are low, <2 wt. % deviation from actual values for individual minerals, as tested on artificial shale mixtures. No normalization is applied and thus, for natural rocks, the analysis is tested by the departure of the sum of the measured components from 100%. Our approach compares favorably with other quantitative analysis techniques, including a Rietveld-based technique.

Chemical analysis is an essential step to establish the nature of minerals (Newman, 1987). The techniques used in rock and mineral analyses are generally valid for the analyses of clays. Additional information from other analytical techniques, which are mentioned here, is needed for accurate interpretation of the chemical analysis results of major elements (Gabis, 1979). In traditional chemical analyses, the aim is to obtain accurate analyses for all elements present in the sample, in such a way that the sum of elements expressed as oxides, including hydration and structural water, approaches the sample weight as closely as possible.

The surface microtopographic observations and analyses of Izumiyama hydrothermal illite particles were made by utilizing tapping-mode atomic force microscopy (TMAFM). The Izumiyama illite particles showed platy to lath shapes. Platy particles exhibited various spiral growth patterns, i.e. circular, malformed circular, or polygonal single unit-cell layer spirals, polygonal parallel step spiral, or interlaced spiral patterns. The polygonal parallel step spiral and interlaced spiral patterns are formed by two single unit-cell layers rotated by 180° and 120° arising from a single screw dislocation point, respectively. The spiral patterns indicate that the illite particles have 1M, 2O and 2M1 polytypes. Lath-shaped particles show only interlacing patterns supporting the formation of 2M1 structures.

Particles showing circular or malformed circular spirals were found to be thinner and to have narrower step separations than particles showing polygonal spirals. Polygonal platy and lath-shaped particles showing interlaced patterns tended to be thicker and to have wider step separations than the other polygonal platy particles.

These results suggest that the Izumiyama illites crystallize as the result of a mechanism involving solution-mediated polytypes and spiral-type transformations of illite. The mechanism involves the Ostwald ripening process, i.e. a transformation of the polytype and spiral shape. The sequence of crystallization of the Izumiyama illite is: 1M circular spirals → 1M, 2O polygonal spirals → 2M1 polygonal spirals occurring during crystal growth and sequentially overgrowing on the initial particle surfaces. The super-saturation of the hydrothermal solution probably decreases gradually during the transformation, and this decrease may cause not only the transformation from a circular to a polygonal crystal morphology but also the development of a lath habit due to the inhibition of the growth rate in the [010] direction of the particle.

Muscovite-kaolinite intergrowths found in Albian sandstones of the Basque Cantabrian basin (northern Spain) were studied by optical, scanning and electron microscopy and electron microprobe analysis. Kaolinitization begins at grain edges, forming the characteristic fanned-out textures, and propagates toward the interior along the cleavages of muscovite. Kaolinite and muscovite occur as thick packets, being free of interlayering. Phase boundaries between both minerals show bidimensional crystallographic continuity, and no intermediate phases have been identified. The data obtained suggest that muscovite only supplied a template suitable for the epitactic crystallization of kaolinite, while Al was available in sufficient amounts due to the dissolution of detrital K-feldspar. Very small packets of magnetite or maghemite showing a coherent orientation with the kaolinite crystals have been recognized, and could be responsible for the small Fe contents usually detected in electron microprobe analyses of kaolinite.

Textural relationships between authigenic kaolinite and deformation microstructures in the intergrowths, combined with previous information about burial conditions, show that alteration proceeded during a late stage of the diagenetic history, related to the uplift of the studied materials as a result of the Alpine orogeny.

It is shown that polytypes or stacking sequences of cronstedtite, an Fe-bearing trioctahedral 1:1 phyllosilicate, can be determined using near-atomic high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). By viewing along the [010], [310] and directions (orthohexagonal indexing), the four groups of the standard polytypes can be distinguished. Imaging along the [100], [110] and directions allows determination of the polytypes in each group. The polytypic sequences of groups A and C are intergrown at the monolayer level in cronstedtite from Lostwithiel, England, which is a new insight if compared with previous suggestions that layer stackings characteristic of different groups do not occur together. The HRTEM images also revealed the relationship between the layer polarity and the morphology of the cronstedtite crystals, where the tetrahedral sheet side points towards the top of the truncated pyramidal shape of the crystal.

The extraction of salts by layered (bentonite) and fibrous (sepiolite) clay poultices from stone materials currently used in Heritage buildings was studied. Analyses were performed on stones affected by salts but not submitted to humidity, and also on stones affected by salts and simultaneously submitted to continuous or intermittent humidity during the salt-extraction process. From the experimental results and the statistical analysis, the application of two successive poultices is sufficient for an efficient extraction of Cl− and NO3- in the absence of humidity. However, under humid conditions, the efficiency of the method is reduced considerably. For SO42-, the use of hydrotalcites (anionic clays) is recommended for more effective extraction.

The dissolution in 1 M HC1 of Al-, Mn-, and Ni-substituted hematites and the influence of metal substitution on dissolution rate and kinetics of dissolution were investigated. The inhomogeneous dissolution of most of the hematites investigated was well described by the Avrami-Erofe'ev rate equation, kt = √[-ln(l − α)], where k is the dissolution rate in time, t, and α is the Fe dissolved. Dissolution of Al-substituted hematite occurred mostly by edge attack and hole formation normal to (001), with the rate of dissolution, k, directly related to surface area (SA). Dissolution of rhombohedral Mn- and Ni-bearing hematites occurred at domain boundaries, crystal edges, and corners with k unrelated to SA. The morphology of Mn- and Ni-substituted hematites changed during dissolution with clover-leaf-like forms developing as dissolution proceeded, whereas the original plate-like morphology of Al-bearing hematite was generally retained. Acid attack of platy and rhomboidal hematite is influenced by the direct (e.g., metaloxygen bond energy, hematite crystallinity) and indirect (e.g., crystal size and shape) affects associated with incorporation of foreign ions within hematite.

Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is ideally suited for the rapid and simultaneous analysis of multiple elements in geological materials, including soils, organic substances and most rock types (Eggins et al., 1997; Long erich et al., 1990; Jenner et al., 1990). The application to clay minerals is more recent (Jain et al., 1994). This technique is highly sensitive, and is capable of analyzing a wide range of isotopes covering the entire mass spectrum Consequently, ICP-MS is used to measure directly rare earth and platinum group elements at ppb levels without preconcentration.

The Kübler Index (KI) is defined as the full width at half-maximum height (FWHM) of the 10-Å X-ray diffraction peak of illite-smectite interstratified (I-S) clay minerals. The only parameters controlling the Kübler Index are assumed to be the mean number of layers (N) in the coherent scattering domains (CSD), the variance of the distribution of the number of layers of the CSD, the mean percentage of smectite layers in I-S (%S), and the probability of layer stacking (Reichweite).

The Kübler-Index measurements on air-dried (KIAD) and ethylene-glycolated (KIEG) samples were compared to N and %S using the NEWMOD computer program to simulate X-ray diffraction patterns. Charts of KIAD versus KIEG corrected for instrumental broadening were made and isolines were mapped for constant N and %S. Isolines allow a direct and rapid determination of N and %S from KI measurements.

The method allows quantification of the metamorphic anchizone limits by considering mean thickness of fundamental particles in MacEwan crystallites. The transition from diagenesis to the anchizone and from the anchizone to the epizone of low-grade metamorphism corresponds to thicknesses of 20- and 70-layer fundamental particles, respectively.

Methylene blue (MB) was adsorbed from aqueous solutions onto a kaolinite and four soil samples to determine the effects of MB dimerization on the measured surface area. Adsorption isotherms were prepared using four adsorbing solutions containing, respectively, 9, 46, 71, and 83% of MB molecules in the dimeric state. Langmuir-type isotherms were obtained in each case. The results indicate that equilibration occurs quickly. The aggregation state of MB molecules at the surface does not depend on the aggregation state in the initial adsorbing solutions, but on the final equilibrium concentration of MB. A comparison with the specific surface area measured by adsorption of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether indicates that MB adsorbs as a monomer, regardless of the aggregation number in solution. This result occurs owing to the strength of monomer-surface and monomer-monomer interactions. If monomer-surface interactions are favored, the MB dimer adsorbs in the monomeric form. If monomer-monomer interactions are favored, dimer adsorption may occur. The visible spectra of adsorbed molecules indicated that MB was present at the surface as a mixture of monomeric and dimeric species. These results suggest that dimers are formed in the contact region between two aggregating particles.

The layer charge is perhaps the single most significant characteristic of 2: 1 layer phyllosilicates. Layer charge affects cation-retention capacity and adsorption of water, and various polar organic molecules. The effects of layer charge on the sorptive properties of organo- clays were illustrated by Lee et al. (1990). It is generally agreed that the classification of 2: 1 silicate clays, which is a continuing problem, may be resolved by taking into account the magnitude of the layer charge (Bailey et al., 1971; Malla and Douglas, 1987). Studies on structural chemistry also confirm the importance of the layer charge for the characterization of the 2:1 phyllosilicates (Newman and Brown, 1987).

The evolution of texture, structure and chemical composition of chloritic clays in coeval pairs of metabasites and metapelites of a prograde sequence from the Bükk Mountains has been investigated using electron microscopy techniques. Samples are from the Bükkium (innermost Western Carpathians, Hungary) that underwent Alpine metamorphism, ranging from late diagenesis to epizone for pelites and from prehnite-pumpellyite to greenschist facies for the metabasites.

Although bulk-rock compositions, textures and primary minerals are different, chlorite evolved at similar rates in coeval metabasites and metasediments, but along different paths. The principal similarities in the prograde sequence are a decrease in the percentage of interstratified material in both dioctahedral and trioctahedral phyllosilicates and increase in thicknesses of chlorite and illite crystallites. The principal difference is in the type of interstratification in chlorite, with berthierine in metapelites, and smectite (saponite) in metabasites, although smectitic mixed layers also occur in the former. The evolution of trioctahedral phyllosilicates is marked by a decrease in the number of mineral species with increasing grade, chlorite, sensu stricto, being the only trioctahedral mineral at higher grades. This is consistent with the trend in reaction progress where both metastable systems (metabasites and metapelites) tend toward the same end-member, thermodynamically stable chlorite, as well as texture (crystal size), and where all intermediate states are metastable, and determined by the Ostwald step rule.

Imogolite is a tubular aluminosilicate which is common in Andosols and Spodosols. The high pH at point-of-zero charge at the outer parts of the tube and the anomalously high chloride adsorption of imogolite suggested that there may be structural charge associated with this mineral. The structural charge may arise because of changes in bond valence imposed by the incorporation of orthosilicate anions in a gibbsite-type sheet. By using a Basic Stem Model approach, it is shown that the surface charge properties of imogolite are explained if the mean Al-O bond valence of the outer -Al2OH groups is higher than the inner -Al2OHSiO3 groups. Hence, a weak positive charge is developed on the outer tube walls whereas a negative charge develops in the tubular pores. The best model fits were obtained where either one or two units of structural charge per unit cell of tube were assumed. The model may also explain why imogolite tubes are normally aggregated in large bundles in close hexagonal packing, because bound counterions may hold the tubes together. However, to arrive at good model descriptions, the deprotonation of -Al2OH groups must occur at a higher pH than that expected when assuming that all surface oxygens form two hydrogen bridges with H2O. A more precise structure of imogolite is required to test fully this hypothesis.

The mineral and chemical composition of green glauconitic grains from ODP Site 959 (2100 m water depth) located on the northern flank of the Ivory Coast—Ghana Marginal Ridge was studied. Recurrent winnowing of a 20 m thick Pleistocene succession resulted in a low accumulation rate and stratigraphic hiatuses. The green clay material typically occurs as fillings in the chambers of pelagic foraminifers. The amount of green clay present in sediments older than 1 Ma is small, and greater in younger material. Mud composed of smectite, kaolinite, traces of mica, calcite and quartz was the precursor material that filled the chambers of the foraminifers. Processes at the water-sediment interface slowly modified this composition. Kaolinite was dissolved; smectite lost Al but gained Fe, K and layer charge. In that matrix, the nanocrystals of neoformed smectite are observed. The infrared (IR) spectra showed OH-stretching and bending vibrations due to groups incorporating Fe3+. The spectra are in agreement with the crystallochemical formulae of Fe3+-rich montmorillonite as determined by point-by-point analyses on the neoformed crystallites and on the surrounding matrix. The layer charge in this Fe3+-rich montmorillonite is almost wholly octahedral as shown in crystallochemical formulae and documented independently by a new IR method. The tetrahedral charge appeared when the Fe content increased by > 1.2 Fe per formula unit. With the maturation process, the increased role of the closed layers is observed, with the color of grains becoming greener. We have documented for the first time glauconitization proceeding at a depth of 2100 m at a temperature near 3°C. The most important factors of the process are: accumulation of terrigenous clayey material in the foraminiferal chambers, Fe supply from a nearby continent, and a lengthy residence at the water-sediment interface in the zone of the winnowing and low sediment accumulation rate.

The matrix of the Pliocene volcaniclastics from the Akrotiri area of the Santorini island (Greece) is dominated by clinoptilolite. Smectite, occasionally illite-smectite, opal-CT, cristobalite and mordenite are also present. The clinoptilolite-rich samples were heated at 460 and 560°C for 12 h and the reductions in the intensity of the 020 diffraction peak were measured. Electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) was then used to study the chemical composition of the clinoptilolite. Statistical analysis proved a strong and quantifiable relationship between the reduction of the 020 diffraction peak of the clinoptilolite and the Na/K ratio. A representative set of microprobe analyses of clinoptilolite was performed before any correlation with thermal behavior was attempted. The presence of K in the structure of clinoptilolite as well as its relationship with Na are most important in the thermal behavior of clinoptilolite.

The Clay Minerals Society maintains a repository of Source Clays to provide scientists and researchers with a readily available supply of consistent materials so that research conducted by different groups can be correlated to identical material. These Source Clays include kaolinite, smectite, chlorite, vermiculite, illite, palygorskite and other minerals. As most of the Source Clays are naturally occurring materials, they typically contain minor to significant amounts of other mineral impurities. When conducting research using these samples, it is important that their mineral content be well characterized. It is also often desirable to remove these impurities to produce pure clay samples. For example, when studying the biological effects of a particular clay mineral, it is imperative that all contaminants (e.g. crystalline silica minerals) be removed from the clay in question so that experimental results can be attributed to the clay alone. If purification is required, the clays must be purified in a manner that does not significantly alter the physical or chemical properties of the samples. This chapter describes the X-ray diffraction (XRD) characteristics of a suite of Source Clays of The Clay Minerals Society and demonstrates methods of purification based on Stokes' law of settling in suspension that can be used to purify the clays.

Two distinct assemblages of authigenic phyllosilicates were distinguished in the Kremikovtsi sedimentary exhalative (SEDEX) siderite iron formation (SIF) and noted as important tracers of two styles of mineralization characteristic of this type of ore deposit. Hydrothermal-sedimentary layer silicates are represented by rare occurrences of relict microcrystalline Mg-rich berthierine with a relatively low degree of structural ordering, associated closely with framboidal pyrite as an intergranular matrix cementing sparry siderite grains; the larger silicates are also represented by the diagenetic transformation product of berthierine, chamosite. Berthierine precipitated under anoxic conditions during advanced early diagenesis after chert deposition. Hydrothermal-epigenetic phyllosilicates (berthierine, chamosite, illite-smectite (I-S), and kaolinite) from the barite-sulfide assemblage are characterized by: crystalline and undeformed habits; relatively larger particle size, low-temperature polytypes, low to no mixed layering, and a high degree of crystallinity; absence of impurities and dominant monomineralic aggregates; affiliation to initial open spaces and deposition mainly as vug fillings and linings. They formed under pronounced control by the vuggy porosity of the siderite host caused by the invasion of acid (pH = 3–5), hot (200–230°C) hydrothermal fluids probably at the stage of burial diagenesis of the SIF under relatively stable reducing conditions fluctuating near the sulfide/sulfate stability boundary $\left(\log {\text{P}}_{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}}\cong -30\right)$. The greater Al concentration in hydrothermal solution than in seawater determines the affiliation of phyllosilicates in the Phanerozoic SEDEX SIFs to aluminous species (berthierine, chamosite) unlike low to non aluminous ones (greenalite, stilpnomelane) in the Precambrian IFs. The berthierine compositions, expressed by the Mg/Fe vs. Al/Si ratios, are a sensitive indicator of the geological conditions under which they formed (marine, non-marine, hydrothermal ore and pre-ore), thus allowing the genetic discrimination of this mineral from various localities.

Dioctahedral vermiculite occurs in an isolated metagabbro klippe (Kurançalı Metagabbro) that belongs to the Central Anatolian Ophiolites from central Turkey. Both the metagabbro and the structurally underlying high-grade metamorphic rocks are intruded by granitic rocks. The Kurançalı Metagabbro is characterized by its well-developed compositional layering, and the presence of vermiculitized phlogopiterich layers. Petrographic and mineralogie studies show that the primary mineral phases in the host rock are diopside, tschermakitic hornblende, Fe-rich phlogopite, and plagioclase. Secondary minerals are hornblende, actinolitic hornblende, Fe-rich phlogopite, and vermiculite. A two-phase history of alteration involving acidic weathering and alkaline metasomatism is suggested for the dioctahedral vermiculite and secondary Fe-rich phlogopite, respectively. The alteration of phlogopite to dioctahedral vermiculite proceeded both along cleavage planes and at crystal edges. The vermiculite is colorless to pale yellow with weak pleochroism and shows optical continuity with the parent mineral. Vermiculite flakes, analyzed semi-quantitatively by scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive analysis (SEM-EDS) and electron microprobe (EMP), are characterized by partially expanded interlayers, K depletion, and Mg and/or A1 enrichment. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential thermal analysis-thermal gravimetric (DTA-TG) analyses indicate that phlogopite is not a pure phase, although it is the dominant one. The XRD patterns show the presence of both dioctahedral vermiculite having dehydrated interlayers and hydroxy-Al interlayers, and interstratified phlogopite-vermiculite. The transformation of phlogopite to vermiculite is thought to represent an initial stage of weathering in an acidic environment.

Iron and silicon in various proportions are the major components of the newly formed hydrothermal sediments in the Atlantis II Deep, Red Sea. Iron-rich 2:1 phyllosilicates with morphologies varying from ribbons to plates represent clays in initial formation stage. Well-crystallized goethite particles contain domains of hundreds of nanometers in length with the rare presence of dislocations. Molar compositions show ratios of Si/Fe = 0.12 and Al/Fe = 0.05. Euhedral feroxyhyte with curled edges forms clusters with the goethite. The feroxyhyte has ratios of Si/Fe = 0.3 and are the major Si-associated iron oxides. Two nanometer-size phases showing short range periodity are common in the newly formed Atlantis II sediments: (1) hematite with traces of Si and (2) ferrihydrite with Si/Fe molar ratios varying between 0.17–0.89. The ferrihydrite forms large clusters. Hematite appears also as well-crystallized large crystals. Feroxyhyte probably forms at the transition zone between Red Sea Deep Water and the upper convective layer in the brine, whereas goethite and ferrihydrite form in the upper convective layer. The two forms of hematite represent two stages of recrystallization, which occur within the brine.
