Analytical electron microscopy was used to confirm the location of pillars of zirconia in pillared montmorillonite. Data show that the pillared clay is of “high” quality, with surface areas ranging from 200 to 250 m2/g and (001) spacings in the 17–18 Å range. The zirconia-rich pillars were observed using bright-field imaging, annular dark-field imaging, and energy-filtered imaging. The composition of the pillars was confirmed by performing nano-analysis using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy. The pillars apparently have an irregular shape <50 Å in size. The shape and relatively large size of the pillars suggest that zirconia dispersion is not ideally distributed in this sample. This study is apparently the first report of electron microscopy observation of pillaring material in clays.

The ammonium acetate saturation (AMAS) method was used to study the cation-exchange capacity (CEC) of zeolitic volcaniclastic materials from Santorini and Polyegos Islands, Greece. The AMAS method was tested with respect to the time required to saturate the samples of zeolites with ammonium (NH4+) ions, the efficient liberation of NH4+ ions, and the suitability of two widely used techniques to measure ammonia (NH3) (Kjeldahl ammonia distillation technique and the ammonia electrode technique). By using the inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) technique and measuring the number of cations exchanged during ammonium acetate (NH4OAc) saturation, it was found that the saturation period for zeolitic materials must be increased to 12-day cycles to ensure effective saturation. Following NH4OAc saturation, the AMAS method produces NH4+ solutions, after the NH4+-saturated samples of zeolites are washed with 10% NaCl. The amount of the NH4+ ions in solution (i.e., exchangeable cations) is a measure of the CEC. The NH4+ ions can not be directly measured and must be converted to NH3. The Kjeldahl ammonia distillation technique and the ammonia electrode technique for measuring NH3 give identical CEC results. However, the ammonia electrode technique, when used directly with the NH4+ samples of zeolite without 10% NaCl treatment, generally gives higher CEC values. The amount of NH4+ treated (converted to NH3), when the NH4+-saturated zeolitized samples were used directly, was higher than the amount of the NH4+ treated when the NH4+ solutions were obtained after washing the NH4+-saturated zeolitized samples with 10% NaCl. Therefore, washing with 10% NaCl does not facilitate the release of all NH4+ initially within the zeolite structure. A modified AMAS technique is proposed for measuring the CEC of zeolitic material.

Factors that are potentially important in the pulmonary pathogenesis of asbestos and other mineral particles are: 1) morphology, 2) Fe-content, 3) solubility under intraphagosomal conditions, 4) value and sign of the surface potential of the particle, 5) hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity, 6) capacity to activate phagocytic leukocytes, and 7) duration of exposure to the particles. The order of importance of these factors in causing severe or fatal pulmonary pathogenicity is estimated to be: 1 > 3 > 7 > 6 ≫ 5 > 4 > 2. The order of pathogenicity of the minerals is estimated as: amphibole asbestos: crocidolite, tremolite, amosite > erionite > serpentine asbestos: chrysotile > talc > silica > simple metal oxides. Particle length, duration of exposure to the particles, and pre-treatment of the particles may however enhance the pathogenic potential of any of the lower-ranked particles.

Extensive hydrothermal alteration is observed around volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. These deposits are related to Late Cretaceous volcanism in various parts of the Eastern Pontide province. Mineral assemblages resulting from alteration consist of mostly clay minerals and silica polymorphs, some sulfate minerals, and scarce zeolite minerals. The clay minerals are kaolinite, illite, and smectite. These minerals were examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), and differential thermal analysis (DTA)-thermal gravimetry (TG) techniques. The illite and the toseki deposits are a result of hydrothermal alteration of dacitic-andesitic volcanites. Two groups of bentonite deposits occur; the first mainly formed by hydrothermal solution whereas the second group resulted from halmyrolysis.

The smectite in these alteration zones is generally montmorillonitic in composition and the interlayer cation is mostly Ca and lesser amounts of Na. The SiO2 and Fe2O3 contents of the hydrothermal bentonites are higher than those of the halmyrolysis smectites; however, the MgO content of both groups is similar. The Na2O and K2O contents of both groups are generally <0.5%. The hydrothermal bentonites are not plastic and have open honeycomb microtextures, although the halmyrolitic smectites are plastic with ultrafine and rod-shaped textures. Illite, which contains some smectite layers, is a 1M polymorph, and has an asymmetry to the low-angle side of the XRD peaks. The impure illite deposits contain various combinations of smectite, kaolinite and gypsum, galena, sphalerite, pyrite, goetite, and quartz. The illite has >35 wt. % Al2O3. The toseki raw material, which may be possibly useful as a porcelain raw material, is composed mainly of illite, kaolinite and quartz, or illite and quartz. The crystallinity of the kaolinite is poor.

The effect of freezing and thawing on the rheological behavior of illite suspensions was studied by examining viscosity and plasticity. Stability of suspensions was characterized by a hysteresis loop of thixotropy. Thermal gravimetric and differential scanning calorimetry analysis were also used. After initial freezing and thawing, the flow curves of the suspensions show an increased viscosity, an “irregular up line”, and a greater hysteresis loop of thixotropy. The ratios of mean viscosity of previously frozen (F) and control (O) samples (ηF/ηO) for non-expandable 2:1 phyllosilicates ranges from 1.3 to 2.1. Addition of monovalent (0.1% Na2SiO3) and divalent cations (0.3% CaCl2 or BaCl2) increase and decrease the shear-stress difference between F and O samples, respectively. Prior freezing of clay samples results in an increase of plasticity by ∼20–30%. The thermal analysis data of F samples show an increase in weight loss, and a decrease in enthalpy of dehydration. The changes of physico-chemical properties from cycles of freezing and thawing are long lasting. The freezing memory effect of illite-type clays is expected to play an important role in ceramic processing, i.e., casting processes, plastic formation, and sintering.

A nickel hydroxide-vermiculite complex (NHVC) with csinβ = 1.41 nm and particle sizes from 0.075 to 0.15 mm was obtained hydrothermally by adding nickel nitrate solution to vermiculite from Transvaal, South Africa. The quantity of nickel hydroxide included in NHVC was controlled by adjusting the concentration of the nickel nitrate solution. The thermal behavior of NHVC at 450°C or above was independent of the Ni content. However, small differences exist in the dehydration behavior of NHVC below 450°C. One-dimensional Fourier electron density analysis of the NHVC structure containing 2.43 mol of Ni per half unit cell showed that Ni cations occupy the interlayer of NHVC, and 10% of the total Ni cations is in the ditrigonal cavity of the basal-oxygen plane of the tetrahedral sheet.

The deintercalation of a low-defect kaolinite intercalated with hydrazine was studied by X-ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy (DRIFT), and Raman microscopy over 30 d. X-ray diffraction showed that the kaolinite was fully intercalated. More than 120 h were required for the hydrazine-intercalate to decompose. The Raman spectra of the hydrazine intercalate showed only a single band at 3620 cm−1, which was attributed to the innerhydroxyl group. Upon deintercalation, additional Raman bands were observed at 3626 and 3613 cm−1. These bands decreased in intensity with further deintercalation. As deintercalation proceeded, the bands assigned to the inner-surface hydroxyl groups at 3695, 3682, 3670, and 3650 cm−1 occurred and increased in intensity. DRIFT spectra showed two bands at 3620 and 3626 cm−1 for the fully intercalated kaolinite only. Upon deintercalation, an additional band assigned to intercalated water was observed at 3599 cm−1 and increased in intensity at the expense of the 3626-cm−1 band. Bands attributed to the innersurface hydroxyl groups increased in intensity with deintercalation. Both the Raman and DRIFT spectra showed complexity in the NH-stretching region with two sets of NH-symmetric and antisymmetric stretching bands. Deintercalation was followed by the loss of intensity of these bands. Significant changes were also observed in the hydroxyl deformation and water-bending modes as a result of deintercalation. A model of hydrazine intercalation of kaolinite based on the insertion of a hydrazine-water unit is proposed. The hydrated end of the hydrazine molecule hydrogen bonds with the innersurface hydroxyl groups resulting in the formation of a band at 3626 cm−1 in the DRIFT spectra.

X-ray diffraction (XRD) profile analysis of eight synthetic hematite samples was performed to identify the best parameters for determining the apparent mean crystallite dimension (D) and, consequently, surface area, The samples are comparable to soil hematite with respect to crystallinity. The procedure included: a) deconvolution of the XRD peaks to Gauss and Cauchy components and subtraction of the instrumental profile, b) determination of D from full-width at half-maximum, integral breadth, and integral breadth measurements of the Cauchy component, and c) comparison of deduced surface areas with those obtained by the N2-BET adsorption method. As expected, D values are strongly influenced by the broadening parameters. An appropriate selection of peaks is required to obtain size values along the crystallographic axes a (hkl: 110,300) and c (hkl: 104, 116) and to calculate reliable surface areas. Using the Cauchy component of the above peaks, the calculated surface areas compared well with those measured by the N2-BET adsorption method.

The effects of neodymium (Nd) on the transformation of ferrihydrite to iron oxides was studied. The possible isomorphous substitution of Nd3+ for Fe3+ in iron oxides was examined also. Nd was used as an inactive substitute of trivalent radioactive actinide elements. Hydrolysis of ferric nitrate solution containing 0–30 mole % of Nd formed Nd, Fe-rich ferrihydrite as initial precipitates, which were poorly crystalline. Aging of the Nd-containing ferrihydrite in 0.3 M OH− at 40°C and at pH 9.2 at 70°C formed Nd-free goethite and Nd-substituted hematite. The abundance of these crystalline phases was related to Nd in the parent solutions. Phase abundance, unit-cell parameters, and peak width were estimated by use of the Rietveld method.

Samples containing illite and illite-smectite, having different crystal shapes (plates, “barrels”, and filaments), were selected for sorption experiments with cesium. There is a positive correlation between total surface area and Cs-sorption capacity, but no correlation between total surface area and the distribution coefficient, Kd. Generally Kd increases with the edge surface area, although “hairy” (filamentous) illite does not fit this pattern, possibly because elongation of crystals along one axis reduces the number of specific sorption sites.

113Cd solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was used to identify possible Cd2+ adsorption sites in montmorillonite. The montmorillonite was treated with 0.1 and 1 M CdCl2 aqueous solutions and samples with 13 and 8-µm particle size were used. The data are consistent with a two-site model for sorption of Cd2+ on montmorillonite. Cd2+ is localized in the montmorillonite in two different sites: 1) in the interlayers as hydrated Cd2+ and 2) on the external surface, probably with few H2O molecules hydrating to it. Cadmium is also adsorbed as CdCl+ in the interlayer. Treatment with a 0.1 M CdCl2 solution produces adsorption of free Cd2+ in the interlayer whereas treatment with 1 M CdCl2 resulted in adsorption of Cd2+ in both the interlayer and on surface sites and the adsorption of CdCl+ in the interlayer. A larger particle size favors Cd2+ adsorption on the external surface whereas a smaller particle size favors Cd2+ adsorption in the interlayer.

Three samples of volcanic tuff were hydrothermally altered at ∼82°C in a soxhlet apparatus for periods from 745 to 2706 h. The samples correspond to partially altered specimens of volcanic tuff with 6 wt. % (T3a) and 9 wt. % (T3b) smectite and to the calcination product of the latter (T3c). The calcination treatment melted the smectite in the sample. Untreated samples and alteration products were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetry (TG), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, and oxygen isotope analysis. DTA-TG of the <2-µm size fractions showed that there was a small increase of smectite relative to glass after alteration for samples T3a and T3b, with the amount of smectite increasing exponentially with time. No smectite formed in sample T3c. These results suggest that smectite acts as a nucleation site for the precipitation of new smectite. The amount of glass in the <2-µm size fraction increased, although slightly decreased relative to smectite. SEM-EDX analysis showed smectite with the approximate structural formula of Na0.22K0.08Mg0.12Ca0.03VI(Al1.47Fe0.05Mg0.48)IV(Si3.97Al0.03)O10(OH)2.

Oxygen isotope composition of the <2-µm size fraction became enriched in 18O by alteration, the >2-µm size fraction of T3b did not vary, and that of T3c was depleted in 18O. Our results are consistent with three processes during alteration: 1) oxygen isotope exchange between volcanic glass and water, 2) neoformation of smectite, and 3) hydration and consequent hydroxylation of the calcined glass.

Adsorption and the mechanism of adsorption of the herbicide glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine] by hydrotalcite (HT) and by hydrotalcite calcined at 500°C (HT500) was studied. The values of the Freundlich K constant of the adsorption isotherms and the distribution coefficients, Kd, depend on the pH of the adsorption system and vary between 55.54–9603 (K) and 36.82–6252 (Kd) for HT and between 10,106–23,242 (K) and 17,801–26,558 (Kd) for HT500. X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy studies showed that glyphosate is not adsorbed into the interlayer of HT. The adsorption mechanisms are (1) electrostatic attraction between the surface of HT, charged positively below pH 12 according to its point of zero charge and the glyphosate anion, and (2) ligand exchange between the P-OH and/or C=O groups of the herbicide and the Al and Mg atoms of the HT surface. The occurrence of one or both mechanisms depends on the pH of the adsorption system. These adsorption mechanisms and the amphoteric nature of glyphosate account for the variation in K and Kd values with respect to pH. Previous studies on adsorption of different organic anions by HT have only considered the mechanism of anion exchange as important.

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation shows narrow regions in a Ti-containing Mg-rich annite of composition (K0.90Na0.02)(Mg0.72Fe2+1.78Mn0.03Ti0.27Al0.05)(Si2.77Al1.23)O10(OH,F)2 from a granitic rock, where the ±60° and 180° stacking angles occur extensively. These regions are a few hundreds of nanometers thick along the [001]* direction and are within 1M or 2M1 annite. The stacking sequence in one of these regions was determined by two atomic-resolution images recorded along [1̄10] and [010] of the same crystal. Stacking sequences with ± 120° or 180° rotations are dominant, although those with ±60° rotations occur also. Locally 2O and more complex sequences exist. Compositional analysis by TEM indicated no difference in the chemical compositions between these regions and the adjacent ones with regular 1M or 2M1 stacking sequence. The origin of these unusual stacking sequences in annite is discussed.

Intercalation of amino acids into 10.0-Å hydrated kaolinite was studied by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis-thermal gravimetry (DTA-TG), and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Intercalation was found to be dependent on the chain-length, pH, and the concentration of the amino acid zwitterion. Near the isoelectric point, fully intercalated phases were obtained in solutions of concentration >0.5–1 M for glycine (Gly), 2–3 M for β-alanine (β-Ala), and 12 M for both γ-aminobutyric acid (γ-Aba) and δ-aminovaleric acid (δ-Ava). ∊-aminocaproic acid (∊-Aca) with a long chain (C = 6) was only partially intercalated. Intercalated amino acid formed a mono-molecular arrangement with the alkyl chain tilting toward the layer at an angle related to H2O content. The compositions of the intercalates of the Gly and β-Ala are Al2Si2O5(OH)4·(Gly)0.67·0.24H2O and Al2Si2O5(OH)4·(β-Ala)0.63·0.25H2O, respectively, based on TG data. From IR data, Gly and β-Ala molecules are found intercalated as zwitterions and these molecules form hydrogen bonds with both the Al-OH and Si-O surfaces of kaolinite. Washing the intercalate with water produced a hydrated kaolinite, which may form a second amino-acid intercalate of high order. Thus, hydrated kaolinite intercalates or deintercalates amino acids depending on concentration and conditions.

A series of hydrothermal experiments were performed to determine the phase relations on the beidellite-saponite pseudo-binary join. Quenched glasses with stoichiometric dehydrated compositions of an Na-rich smectite on the join were heated at 250–500°C for durations of 1–151 d at 100 MPa. Time-temperature diagrams showed that immiscibility occurs between dioctahedral smectite (beidellite) and trioctahedral smectite (saponite) below 400°C. Thus, smectite with intermediate chemical composition was considered as metastable in this system. Above 400°C the assemblage of regularly interstratified saponite-chlorite, quartz, and feldspar was recognized in the intermediate chemical compositional region of this join. On the beidellite side of this join, beidellite and mixed-layer phases of smectite and a regular interstratification of montmorillonite-beidellite, are possible phases that occur at <300°C. They readily reacted to form a mixture of dioctahedral rectorite plus quartz at 300°C. This assemblage then reacted to a dioctahedral “mica”, which can expand with glycol and quartz. On the saponite side of this join, a single phase, saponite, existed at <400°C, and transformed to saponite plus trioctahedral rectorite with aging and increasing temperature of synthesis. The alteration was affected strongly by the chemical composition of the binary system.

Halloysite is a common pedogenic clay mineral, often found in young soils developed on volcanic deposits (Dixon, 1989), It is a member of the kaolin group of clays with the same ideal stoichiometric composition as kaolinite [Al2Si2O5(OH)4]. Halloysite, however, often contains water of hydration (i,e., Al2Si2O5(OH)4·nH2O), and is commonly found with a tubular morphology, This “rolling” of halloysite has received a great deal of study because there is no generally agreed upon mechanism for the process and there is no corresponding phenomenon in natural kaolinite (e.g. , Bates et al., 1950; Bailey, 1989; Singh, 1996; Singh and Mackinnon, 1996). The crystal structure of halloysite often shows stacking disorder. This property, combined with a rolled morphology, makes identification by X-ray diffraction (XRD) difficult. The XRD peaks at 7.5, 4.4, and 3.6 Å are often asymmetric with a large width at half peak height (Bailey, 1989).
