If α = 1, then the usual identification of H2 with l2 takes A1 onto the discrete Cesàro operator. Here we see that {Aα: α ∈ [0, 1]} is not arcwise connected, that Re Aα ≥ 0, that Aα is a Hilbert-Schmidt operator if α ∈[0, 1), and that Aα is neither normaloid nor spectraloid if α ∈(0, 1).

Let G be a split graph with the independent part IG and the complete part KG. Suppose that the Dilworth number of (IG, ≼) with respect to the vicinal preorder ≼ is two and that of (KG, ≼) is an integer k. We show that G has a specified graph Hk, defined in this paper, as an induced subgraph.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between the quotient problem for right noetherian nonsingular rings and the quotient problem for semicritical rings. It is shown that a right noetherian nonsingular ring R has an artinian classical quotient ring iff certain semicritical factor rings R/Ki, i = 1,…,n, possess artinian classical quotient rings and regular elements in R/Ki lift to regular elements of R for all i. If R is a two sided noetherian nonsingular ring, then the existence of an artinian classical quotient ring is equivalent to each R/Ki possessing an artinian classical quotient ring and the right Krull primes of R consisting of minimal prime ideals. If R is also weakly right ideal invariant, then the former condition is redundant. Necessary and sufficient conditions are found for a nonsingular semicritical ring to have an artinian classical quotient ring.

It is shown that if the isometric image of a linear subspace of Hilbert space operators is irreducible in a strong sense, then the isometry is either a multiplicative or anti-multiplicative map, possibly followed by multiplication by a unitary.

Let * be a finite-type star-operation on an integral domain D. If D is integrally closed, then D is a *-multiplication domain (the *-finite *-ideals form a group) if and only if each upper to 0 in D[x] contains an element f with c(f)* = D. A finite-type star operation on D[x] naturally induces a finite-type star operation on D, and, if each *-prime ideal P of D[x] satisfies P ∩ D = 0 or P = (P ∩ D)D[x], then D[x] is a *-multiplication domain if and only if D is.

Let be a class of groups which is closed under the forming of subgroups, epimorphic images and extensions. It is shown that every soluble product G = AB of two -subgroups A and B, one of which satisfies max or min, is an -group (Theorem A). If X satisfies an additional requirement, then every soluble product G = AB of two -subgroups A and B, one of which is a torsion group with min-p for every prime p, is an -group (Theorem B). Corollary: Every soluble product G = AB of two π-subgroups A and B with min-p for every prime p in the set of primes π, is a π -group with min-p for every p.

In the theory of ordinary topological affine and projective planes it is known that (1) An affine plane is never compact (2) a locally compact ordered projective plane is compact and archimedean (3) a locally compact connected projective plane is compact and (4) a locally compact projective plane over a coordinate ring with bi-associative multiplication is compact. In this paper we re-examine these results within the theory of topological Hjelmslev Planes and observe that while (1) remains valid (2), (3) and (4) are false. At first glance these negative results seem to suggest we are working in too general a setting. However a closer examination reveals that the absence of compactness in our setting is a natural and expected feature which in no way precludes the possibility of obtaining significant results.

In this paper it is proved that a finite translation plane of order n ≡ 3 (mod 4) which contains an oval with the four point Pascalian property, or a finite dual translation plane of order n ≡ 3 (mod 4) which contains an oval with the four point Pascalian property, can be coordinatized by a commutative semifield.

In an important series of papers ([3], [4], [5]), (see also Rosen and Galovich [1], [2]), D. Goss has developed the arithmetic of cyclotomic function fields. In particular, he has introduced Bernoulli polynomials and proved a non-existence theorem for an analogue to Fermat’s equation for regular “exponent”. For each odd prime p and integer n, l ≤ n ≤ p2-2 we derive a closed form for the nth Bernoulli polynomial. Using this result a computer search for regular quadratic polynomials of the form x2-a was made. For primes less than or equal to 269 regular quadratics exist for p= 3, 5, 7, 13, 31.

Spectral synthesis in L∞(ℝ, ℂN), N < 1, is considered. It is is proved that sets of spectral synthesis are necessarily sets of spectral resolution.

These results are applied to investigate ergodic and mixing properties of some positive contractions on L1(G, ℂN).

A locally convex space E is called an (HM)-space if E has invariant nonstandard hulls. In this paper we prove that if E is an (HM)-space, then E is a T(μ)-space, where μ is the first measurable cardinal. This is equivalent to say that in an (HM)-space, with dim(E)≧μ, does not exist a continuous norm. With this result, we prove that there exists an inductive semi-reflexive space E such that the bounded sets in E are finite-dimensional but E is not an (HM)-space. Thus, we answer negatively to an open problem raised up by Bellenot. In this paper, we do not use nonstandard analysis.

In this paper we give necessary and sufficient conditions under which the group of units of a group ring of a finite group G over a field K does not contain a free subgroup of rank 2.

Some extensions of this results to infinite nilpotent and FC groups are also considered.

We define a notion of measure for polynomials in several variables, basing our construction on the geometry of the zero-set of the polynomial. For polynomials in one variable, this measure reduces to the usual one. We begin the development of the theory of this measure along lines parallel to the theory of Mahler’s measure, indicating the differences and similarities between the two.

The concepts of repleteness and more generally measure repleteness are investigated for set-theoretic lattices on specific subspaces of a lattice space. These general results are then applied to specific topological spaces, and we obtain as special cases some known theorems as well as some new results concerning for example, ∝-completeness, realcompactness, measure compactness and Borel-measure compactness.

We show that the theory of elliptic integral transformations may be employed to construct iterative approximations for π of order p (p any prime). Details are provided for two, three and seven. The cubic case proves amenable to surprisingly complete analysis.

Necessary conditions and sufficient conditions are obtained for the generalized Lototsky summability matrix method (F, dn) to be regular and Mercerian. In particular, a set of conditions equivalent to being regular and Mercerian is given for real {dn} and for complex {dn} eventually in any closed half-plane containing the origin.

Let p ≥ 3 be a prime number and m a positive integer, and let S be the sphere S(m-1)(p-1)-1. Let f:S→S be a map without fixed points and with fp = idS. We show that there exists an h: S→ℝm with h(x) ≠ h(f(x)) for all x ∈ S. From this we conclude that there exists a closed cover U1,…, U4m of S with Uinf(Ui) = Ø for i = 1,…, 4m. We apply these results to Borsuk-Ulam and Ljusternik-Schnirelmann-Borsuk theorems in the framework of the sectional category and to a problem in asymptotic fixed point theory.

Let K be a field of characteristic 0 and t an indeterminate. It is shown that the absolute Galois group of K(t) is the semi-direct product of a free profinite group with the absolute Galois group of K.

In this note we generalise a result of D. Husemoller to certain bipolynomial Hopf algebras and are able to give Hopf algebra decompositions for these. As an easy consequence of our approach we give a simplified derivation of recent results of P. Hoffman on polynomial generators for these algebras; we also give explicit systems of “Borel generators” for a related family of quotient Hopf algebras considered by Hoffman.
