We generalise a result of Chern [‘A curious identity and its applications to partitions with bounded part differences’, New Zealand J. Math. 47 (2017), 23–26] on distinct partitions with bounded difference between largest and smallest parts. The generalisation is proved both analytically and bijectively.

Let $p$ be an odd prime number and $E$ an elliptic curve defined over a number field $F$ with good reduction at every prime of $F$ above $p$. We compute the Euler characteristics of the signed Selmer groups of $E$ over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$-extension. The novelty of our result is that we allow the elliptic curve to have mixed reduction types for primes above $p$ and mixed signs in the definition of the signed Selmer groups.

We give a partial answer to a question attributed to Chris Miller on algebraic values of certain transcendental functions of order less than one. We obtain $C(\log H)^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D702}}$ bounds for the number of algebraic points of height at most $H$ on certain subsets of the graphs of such functions. The constant $C$ and exponent $\unicode[STIX]{x1D702}$ depend on data associated with the functions and can be effectively computed from them.

The factorial conjecture was proposed by van den Essen et al. [‘On the image conjecture’, J. Algebra 340(1) (2011), 211–224] to study the image conjecture, which arose from the Jacobian conjecture. We show that the factorial conjecture holds for all homogeneous polynomials in two variables. We also give a variation of the result and use it to show that the image of any linear locally nilpotent derivation of $\mathbb{C}[x,y,z]$ is a Mathieu–Zhao subspace.

Four classes of multiple series, which can be considered as multifold counterparts of four classical summation formulae related to the Riemann zeta series, are evaluated in closed form.

Let $\mathfrak{F}$ be a class of finite groups and $G$ a finite group. Let ${\mathcal{L}}_{\mathfrak{F}}(G)$ be the set of all subgroups $A$ of $G$ with $A^{G}/A_{G}\in \mathfrak{F}$. A chief factor $H/K$ of $G$ is $\mathfrak{F}$-central in $G$ if $(H/K)\rtimes (G/C_{G}(H/K))\in \mathfrak{F}$. We study the structure of $G$ under the hypothesis that every chief factor of $G$ between $A_{G}$ and $A^{G}$ is $\mathfrak{F}$-central in $G$ for every subgroup $A\in {\mathcal{L}}_{\mathfrak{F}}(G)$. As an application, we prove that a finite soluble group $G$ is a PST-group if and only if $A^{G}/A_{G}\leq Z_{\infty }(G/A_{G})$ for every subgroup $A\in {\mathcal{L}}_{\mathfrak{N}}(G)$, where $\mathfrak{N}$ is the class of all nilpotent groups.

This note provides an affirmative answer to Problem 2.6 of Praeger and Schneider [‘Group factorisations, uniform automorphisms, and permutation groups of simple diagonal type’, Israel J. Math. 228(2) (2018), 1001–1023]. We will build groups $G$ (abelian, nonabelian and simple) for which there are two automorphisms $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC},\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}$ of $G$ such that the map

In this paper, we study some connections between the polynomial ring $R[y]$ and the differential polynomial ring $R[x;D]$. In particular, we answer a question posed by Smoktunowicz, which asks whether $R[y]$ is nil when $R[x;D]$ is nil, provided that $R$ is an algebra over a field of positive characteristic and $D$ is a locally nilpotent derivation.

Let $T_{n}(\mathbb{F})$ be the semigroup of all upper triangular $n\times n$ matrices over a field $\mathbb{F}$. Let $UT_{n}(\mathbb{F})$ and $UT_{n}^{\pm 1}(\mathbb{F})$ be subsemigroups of $T_{n}(\mathbb{F})$, respectively, having $0$s and/or $1$s on the main diagonal and $0$s and/or $\pm 1$s on the main diagonal. We give some sufficient conditions under which an involution semigroup is nonfinitely based. As an application, we show that $UT_{2}(\mathbb{F}),UT_{2}^{\pm 1}(\mathbb{F})$ and $T_{2}(\mathbb{F})$ as involution semigroups under the skew transposition are nonfinitely based for any field $\mathbb{F}$.

Given a positive integer $m$, a finite $p$-group $G$ is called a $BC(p^{m})$-group if $|H_{G}|\leq p^{m}$ for every nonnormal subgroup $H$ of $G$, where $H_{G}$ is the normal core of $H$ in $G$. We show that $m+2$ is an upper bound for the nilpotent class of a finite $BC(p^{m})$-group and obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a $p$-group to be of maximal class. We also classify the $BC(p)$-groups.

An example of a cocomplete abelian category that is not complete is constructed.

We show that Matui’s HK conjecture holds for groupoids of unstable equivalence relations and their corresponding $C^{\ast }$-algebras on one-dimensional solenoids.

This note contains a (short) proof of the following generalisation of the Friedman–Mineyev theorem (earlier known as the Hanna Neumann conjecture): if $A$ and $B$ are nontrivial free subgroups of a virtually free group containing a free subgroup of index $n$, then $\text{rank}(A\cap B)-1\leq n\cdot (\text{rank}(A)-1)\cdot (\text{rank}(B)-1)$. In addition, we obtain a virtually-free-product analogue of this result.

An automorphism of a graph product of groups is conjugating if it sends each factor to a conjugate of a factor (possibly different). In this article, we determine precisely when the group of conjugating automorphisms of a graph product satisfies Kazhdan’s property (T) and when it satisfies some vastness properties including SQ-universality.

Given a finite group $G$, define the minimal degree $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}(G)$ of $G$ to be the least $n$ such that $G$ embeds into $S_{n}$. We call $G$ exceptional if there is some $N\unlhd G$ with $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}(G/N)>\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}(G)$, in which case we call $N$ distinguished. We prove here that a subgroup with no abelian composition factors is not distinguished.

We discuss the coefficient bound problem, the growth theorem for functions in the class ${\mathcal{P}}_{{\mathcal{H}}}^{0}(M)$ and a two-point distortion property for functions in the class ${\mathcal{B}}_{{\mathcal{H}}}^{0}(M)$.

According to a conjecture by Yang, if $f(z)f^{(k)}(z)$ is a periodic function, where $f(z)$ is a transcendental entire function and $k$ is a positive integer, then $f(z)$ is also a periodic function. We propose related questions, which can be viewed as difference or differential-difference versions of Yang’s conjecture. We consider the periodicity of a transcendental entire function $f(z)$ when differential, difference or differential-difference polynomials in $f(z)$ are periodic. For instance, we show that if $f(z)^{n}f(z+\unicode[STIX]{x1D702})$ is a periodic function with period $c$, then $f(z)$ is also a periodic function with period $(n+1)c$, where $f(z)$ is a transcendental entire function of hyper-order $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}_{2}(f)<1$ and $n\geq 2$ is an integer.

Let $\mathbf{H}_{\mathbb{H}}^{n}$ denote the $n$-dimensional quaternionic hyperbolic space. The linear group $\text{Sp}(n,1)$ acts on $\mathbf{H}_{\mathbb{H}}^{n}$ by isometries. A subgroup $G$ of $\text{Sp}(n,1)$ is called Zariski dense if it neither fixes a point on $\mathbf{H}_{\mathbb{H}}^{n}\cup \unicode[STIX]{x2202}\mathbf{H}_{\mathbb{H}}^{n}$ nor preserves a totally geodesic subspace of $\mathbf{H}_{\mathbb{H}}^{n}$. We prove that a Zariski dense subgroup $G$ of $\text{Sp}(n,1)$ is discrete if for every loxodromic element $g\in G$ the two-generator subgroup $\langle f,gfg^{-1}\rangle$ is discrete, where the generator $f\in \text{Sp}(n,1)$ is a certain fixed element not necessarily from $G$.
